DOWNTOWN FREDERICK AMBASSADOR PROGRAM

Ambassadors help keep Downtown Frederick a safe and beautiful destination all year long. Their team works 5 days a week, providing essential functions like cleaning downtown sidewalks, providing directions and information to visitors, removing graffiti and stickers, pulling weeds in public spaces, and so much more.

THE DESIGN COMMITTEE

works with numerous community partners to address key planning issues that set Downtown Frederick apart. The committee encourages attractive storefronts, revitalized facades, clean sidewalks and pedestrian-friendly amenities.

PLACEMAKING & BEAUTIFICATION INITIATIVES

Created the first-ever Downtown Light Walk, featuring four large-scale lighting installations throughout the winter season

Installed Downtown Frederick’s first pavement art piece, Maxwell BiblioFlow, near the C Burr Artz Public Library

Hung whimsical string lighting across Citizen’s Way, adding new life to a heavily-trafficked side street

Recruited 360 volunteers to sweep sidewalks and pick up trash during the Partnership’s annual volunteer clean-up day, Bring a Broom Saturday

SEVENTH STREET FOUNTAIN PARK

Working with the AARCH Society, selected artist Rodney Carroll to design and create a culturally significant sculpture for the northern edge of the park

Achieved 95% construction plans for park redesign, with work anticipated to begin in 2024

PLANNING FOR THE FUTURE

The Partnership is fully invested in Downtown Frederick, advocating for policies that enhance downtown as a place to live and do business. In the past year, major initiatives included:

Carroll Creek Overlay – continued work to increase residential development opportunities for Downtown Frederick

Downtown Streetscape Plan – worked with the City of Frederick to seek funding for traffic, parking and utility studies on Market and Patrick Streets

East Street Community Visioning Charrette – participated in this effort, led by the City of Frederick, to help design the future of the East Street corridor

Future Development – provided comments on major development projects that will impact the future of Downtown Frederick, such as the Brickworks property

THE BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT COMMITTEE

provides Downtown Frederick’s new and existing businesses with the incentives, tools and resources they need to thrive. The committee focuses on creating a supportive environment for the entrepreneurs and innovators that drive the downtown economy.

SUPPORTING SMALL BUSINESSES

This year, the Partnership’s Business Development & Design committees awarded more than $140,000 in grant funds to support downtown businesses

123 businesses attended the Competitive Edge Series, which featured topics including Instagram marketing, community collaborations, a local partner and resource fair, small business financial support, and a day-long field trip to learn from the Downtown Partnership of Baltimore

Welcomed 5 net new businesses to Downtown Frederick, 23 businesses opened and 18 businesses closed, creating 53 net new jobs

Convened a team of economic development professionals to address challenges faced by retail entrepreneurs, which spurred the creation of “How To” business startup guides and a new business startup assistance program – both of which are currently under development

2022 BUSINESS PERFORMANCE SURVEY RESULTS

Each year, the Partnership administers a Business Performance Survey to gain insights into the downtown economy, providing a unique opportunity to gauge the health and wellbeing of the Downtown Frederick business community and the effectiveness of the Partnership

51% of businesses rated their revenue performance as excellent or above average, which is ahead of 2019 (47%) but behind 2021 (57%)

79% of respondents felt that the overall economic climate for businesses like theirs would be very good or good in the coming year

9.08/10

The overwhelming majority of respondents would recommend Downtown Frederick to other retailers, with an average rating of 9.08 on a 10 point scale

spends hundreds of hours organizing and executing events like First Saturday, Alive @ Five and Frosty Friday that make Downtown Frederick a vibrant destination and a fun place to live.

MARKETING THE MAGIC OF DOWNTOWN

Placed more than $103,000 in advertising to promote Downtown Frederick as a vibrant destination

Launched the “Top 5” blog series, promoting the top events of each week to more than 21,000 readers

Produced and distributed Get it Downtown magazine to more than 30,000 readers

Sold 500 Craft Beverage Passports, featuring 25 wineries, breweries and distilleries with the Frederick County Office of Economic Development

In partnership with Visit Frederick, promoted 24 local restaurants during Frederick Restaurant Week

Generated more than $279,000 of spending at downtown businesses through the Downtown Frederick Gift Card program, which sold more than $353,000 worth of gift cards in FY23

Launched Sunday Artwalk event series, promoting Downtown Frederick’s vibrant Arts & Entertainment District with special gallery events the first weekend of each month

More than 200 Snowflake Tree gifts were claimed during Frosty Friday, representing at least $20,000 spent at local shops, restaurants and businesses during the event Diversified the Alive @ Five lineup, featuring 21 distinct musical genres and hiring 12 first-time bands for the 2022 season

Welcomed 1,278 people to the first-ever Lawn Party at the High Wheel

Provided support for community partner events, including the Thai Water Festival, Hispanic Heritage Festival, Acton Children’s Business Fair and the Asia on the Creek event series

COMING UP NEXT IN DOWNTOWN FREDERICK

The Partnership’s work is never done. We’re looking forward to an exciting year in FY24, filled with lots of events, new projects and growth in Downtown Frederick.

We’ll be bringing the first-ever State of Downtown Film Festival to Downtown Frederick, spurring community conversations around some of the major initiatives sitting on our horizon – such as streetscape redevelopment, community placemaking initiatives and smart growth for our downtown core.

We are eager to partner with the City of Frederick to launch an updated Market Analysis for Downtown Frederick, which will assist new businesses as they consider starting or locating here. Frederick Restaurant Week is getting a brand new twist as Bites & Bevs Frederick, showcasing all of the amazing culinary arts and craft beverages our County has to offer. To close out the year, construction is set to begin at the Seventh Street Fountain Park in Summer 2024 – which will result in a vibrant new community space and public artwork at the northern end of Downtown Frederick.
