THE BOYS IN THE BAND Directed by William Friedkin, 1970

Opening Off Broadway for an extended run in April 1968, Mart Crowley’s play “The Boys in the Band” scandalized. The 1970 film adaptation, with a screenplay by Crowley, caused no less a stir, with some gay men saying its campy birthday gathering in pre-Stonewall New York was already hopelessly dated with painful dia-

logue like “You show me a happy homosexual and I’ll show you a gay corpse” and “If only we could learn not to hate ourselves quite so much.” Yet, nearly 50 later, “Boys”’ laser sharp dialogue and fearless exploration of internalized homophobia still resonate. Camp may have lost force, but new generations of gay men still recognize its sting.

CAROL Directed by Todd Haynes, 2015

New Queer Cinema pioneer Todd Haynes directs Phyllis Nagy’s adaptation of Patricia Highsmith’s “The Price of Salt,” a 1952 novel noteworthy at the time for its happy ending to a lesbian love story. “Carol” is a gorgeous film with miraculous lead performances. Cate Blanchett plays the title character, a glamorous

New Yorker who sparks unexpected attraction in Therese (Rooney Mara), a younger department store sales clerk with whom she has a chance encounter. Haynes told Gay City News, “It’s ultimately Therese’s story. Carol is the object of desire, and she pretty much maintains that position through most of the film because she’s not the one in danger, the way Therese is.”

HIGH ART Directed by Lisa Cholodenko, 1998

Syd (Radha Mitchell), a young woman who works for a high-art photography magazine, stumbles into an acquaintance with a once-famous photographer, Lucy (Ally Sheedy), who is her upstairs neighbor. As she becomes drawn into the hypnotic mysteries of Lucy’s home life, which include her

heroin-addicted lover Greta (Patricia Clarkson) and a steady stream of party hangerson, Syd sees career opportunities but also wrestles with the tug-of-war between her live-in boyfriend (Gabriel Mann) and Lucy’s undeniable allure. What Lucy can offer Syd comes only at an excruciatingly painful price.

TORCH SONG TRILOGY Based on Harvey Fierstein’s Tony-winning play, “Torch Song Trilogy,” with a screenplay by Fierstein, stars the playwright as a struggling female impersonator, Matthew Broderick as his younger lover, Anne Bancroft as the mother who struggles to understand him, and Brian Kerwin as his sexually conflicted

ex. Charles Pierce, famed for his impersonations of Bette Davis, Carol Channing, Joan Crawford, and Joan Collins, is featured as one of Fierstein’s rival performers. Set before the onset of AIDS, the story instead wrestles with questions of gay men’s self-acceptance and family acceptance as well as the threat they face from violent bigots.

LOVE! VALOUR! COMPASSION! Directed by Joe Mantello, 1997

Terence McNally adapted his Tony-winning play for the big screen, with Broadway director Joe Mantello back to helm the film. Eight gay men spend a summer’s holiday weekends together in choreographer Gregory’s (Stephen Bogardus) upstate lakefront home. His boyfriend Bobby (Justin Kirk) is blind, Buzz Hauser (Jason Alexander) is a fussy

theater costume designer, Arthur (John Benjamin Hickey) and Perry (Stephen Spinella) are longtime boyfriends, John (John Glover) is a randy but caustic British dance accompanist, Ramon (Randy Becker) is his rough tradish companion, and James (also Glover) is John’s good-natured twin. Memorial Day, Fourth of July, and Labor Day capture striking essentials about ‘90s gay male life in New York.

LONGTIME COMPANION “Longtime Companion,” with a screenplay by Craig Lucas, tracks the lives, loves, and deaths of a close-knit group of gay men beginning on Fire Island in July 1981, when they first read in the Times about what later became known as AIDS. At first uncomprehendingly and then with staggering routineness, these 20- and

30-something New Yorkers confront illness and death in their circle. This first major Hollywood release about the epidemic was welcome despite criticism of its narrow focus on relatively well-off white men. With some allusions to activism, the film ends by evoking a community of love transcending a world unable or unwilling to contain the plague.

PARTING GLANCES Directed by Bill Sherwood, 1986

“Longtime Companion,” three years later, enjoyed the big Hollywood platform denied “Parting Glances,” but the earlier film was a more carefully observed dayin-the-life story of a gay couple dealing with relationship complications while one of them remains deeply involved in the life and care of an ex (Steve Buscemi) with

an iconoclastic take on life undimmed by AIDS. The tight focus on a handful of scenes –– preparing for an evening out, poignant encounters between the ex-lovers, a farewell party, and a dinner party the next day –– allows real gay men of the ‘80s, listening to real Bronski Beat songs, to emerge. In his first major film role, Buscemi is magnetic.

THE NORMAL HEART Directed by Ryan Murphy, 2014

Nearly 30 years after its stage debut, Larry Kramer’s semi-autobiogrpahical AIDS play hit the big screen, with Kramer writing the adaptation and Mark Ruffalo portraying him with stunning passion. Despite two decades of HIV infection being generally manageable, “The Normal Heart” lost none of its visceral punch, as Ruffalo’s

Ned Weeks and Dr. Emma Brookner (Julia Roberts) exasperatedly scramble to draw urgent attention to the epidemic. The film –– featuring out actors Matt Bomer, Jonathan Groff, Joe Mantello, Denis O’Hare, Jim Parsons, Stephen Spinella, and B.D. Wong –– reflects all of Kramer’s scorching anger, but also his hope that in the face of death gay men will find themselves.

TONGUES UNTIED Directed by Marlon Riggs, 1989

Marlon Riggs’ remarkable montage of filmmaking styles used archival news footage, scenes of physical intimacy, storytelling, and poetry to challenge black gay men’s “silence” in the face of hostility from the larger society, the African-American community, and LGBT whites. Particularly memorable are loving scenes of black men kissing as

ST. ANN’S CHURCH OF MORRISANIA GAY AND LESBIAN MINISTRY

well as poetry performed by Essex Hemphill, who like Riggs would die of AIDS. Riggs embraced the black community’s proud civil rights traditions but also took on its homophobia. Public television’s 1990 screening of “Tongues Untied” sparked outrage on the right, which lingered into Pat Buchanan’s angry primary challenge to President George H.W. Bush two years later.

PARIAH Directed by Dee Rees, 2011

Adepero Oduye is astonishing in her portrayal of Alike, a 17-year-old African-American girl living in Brooklyn and slowly coming to terms with her identity as a butch lesbian. Though she finds some consolation from her police officer father (Charles Parnell), who is

loving even if not fully ready to acknowledge his daughter’s sexual identity, Alike is fiercely at odds with her religious mother (Kim Wayans), who is uncompromising in her demand that she conform. Facing heartbreak at home and in her budding relationships, Alike weathers the storm to find her path to self-fulfillment.

GUN HILL ROAD Returning home to the Bronx after three years in prison, Enrique (Esai Morales) struggles with emotional estrangement from his wife Angela (Judy Reyes) and his teenage son Michael (transgender actress Harmony Santana), who has started down the road to gender transition and life as Vanessa. Angela is unreservedly protec-

tive of Vanessa, but Vanessa and Enrique contend with mutual fear facing off against each other. Vanessa’s battle to stay true to herself despite her father’s unwelcome intrusion and despair may be formulaic, but the performances are full of heart and conviction. Director Green’s debut feature film tells a story with characters too little seen even in LGBT cinema.

APPROPRIATE BEHAVIOR Joking about the glut of films featuring bisexual Persians in Brooklyn –– not! –– out bi writer and director Desiree Akhavan told Gay City News, “I see a formula that works, and I latch on.” Akhavan stars in her story of Shirin, not out to her wealthy Persian immigrant parents and just broken up with her girlfriend. Trying

to bounce back, she dates men, women, and, on one occasion, a couple. Her inability to connect emotionally, Akhavan explained, is a reflection of the difficulty of being “visibly bisexual” in a culture where the word remains “taboo” and “some folks can’t handle the baggage of stepping into that ambiguous place.”

SAVING FACE Directed by Alice Wu, 2004

This romantic dramedy is set in New York’s Chinese-American immigrant community. Wilhelmina (Michelle Krusiec), a young surgeon, withholds her identity as a lesbian from her family, even as her widowed mother (Joan Chen) faces ostracism for becoming pregnant without being married. Wil’s mom

is forced to leave her own father’s house in Flushing and move in with her daughter in Manhattan. As Wil struggles to hold on to her lover, who insists the two must be open, her mother stubbornly refuses to identity the father of the child she is carrying. Can mother and daughter ever get beyond the bonds of saving face?

PARIS IS BURNING Directed by Jennie Livingston, 1990

With Madonna’s “Vogue” video the hottest sensation on the music scene, Jennie Livingston’s documentary about the ball tradition among black and Latino transgender women, gay men, and drag queens was, serendipitously, tailor-made for the cultural moment. Exploring the Harlem subculture of “houses,” overseen by “mothers” and sometimes “fathers,” and their fierce fash-

ion competitions, where “realness” was prized above all else, the film offered indelible profiles –– of Dorian Corey, Pepper LaBeija, Willi Ninja, Angie and Venus Extravaganza, Octavia St. Laurent, and baby-face Freddie Pendavis. Despite some criticism of Livingston for cultural appropriation, the film won wide praise and a Sundance Grand Jury Prize –– though no Oscar nomination.

Their

adventures and misadventures provide the opportunity to explore each character’s strengths and weaknesses, how their pasts hold them back but also the potential their futures could hold, and what their relationships with each other mean to them. SHORTBUS Directed by John Cameron Mitchell, 2006

In a fantastical storyline, a group of New Yorkers try to work through their relationship and sexual issues by visiting an artistic and sexual salon overseen by Justin Vivian Bond, playing vself. Sofia (Sook-Yin Lee), trying to overcome her inability to climax with husband Rob (Raphael Barker), forges a bond with dominatrix Severin

(Lindsay Beamish), while James (Paul Dawson) and Jamie (PJ DeBoy) consider opening up their monogamous relationship to Ceth (Jay Brannan). Much of the film was developed on an improv basis, and it raised eyebrows with its extensive unsimulated sex scenes. Yet for all its explicitness, the overwhelming feeling it evokes is one of sweetness.

CRUISING Directed by William Friedkin, 1980

A decade after “The Boys in the Band,” William Friedkin directed “Cruising,” a psychological thriller about an undercover cop (Al Pacino) infiltrating the West Village leather scene in search of a serial killer targeting gay men. Angered by the film’s sensationalizing of gay sexual culture, protesters disrupted production, and its original cut’s explicitness

led to an X rating and Friedkin’s decision to jettison 40 minutes. Critics suggested this contributed to “Cruising”’s incoherence, especially regarding the undercover’s budding attraction to both the sex and violence he immersed himself in. Others said Pacino was simply wildly miscast. Exploitive and deeply flawed, “Cruising” was also one of the highest visiblilty early gay-focused films.

DOG DAY AFTERNOON Directed by Sidney Lumet, 1975

Five years before his problematic turn in “Cruising,” Al Pacino was stone cold brilliant in “Dog Day Afternoon,” a bank heist tale based on John Wojtowicz’s reallife misadventures. In 1971, Wojtowicz wed Ernest Aron in a Greenwich Village ceremony, and the following year, with an accomplice, he held up a Brooklyn

bank in part to get money for Aron’s gender reassignment surgery. A daylong hostage drama ended with Wojtowicz’s arrest and his accomplice shot dead. The money he earned for the film’s rights to his story, however, paid for Aron’s surgery, and she lived as Elizabeth Eden until her 1987 death, when Wojtowicz was still in jail.
