Of course, a resource guide would not be complete without featuring something very special about downtown Manhattan. This year we are taking a look at neighborhood theaters. Quite a few of these venues existed before the term “Off-Off-Broadway” was coined, and all of them are committed to providing emerging talent with resources and support. We hope you enjoy the profiles, written by artists with a deep connection to the downtown aesthetic. Whether it’s Charles Busch on returning to Theater for the New City, Sigourney Weaver on co-founding the Flea Theater or Penny Arcade on the centennial of Abrons Arts Center, their love for the work these theaters do is a testament to what draws audiences from around the world to the world of Off-Off-Broadway. Where is it Located?
Formulas for Estimating Street Addresses Unbeknownst to some lifetime New Yorkers, there is actually a formula to estimate the numbered cross street to many Manhattan addresses from the avenue addresses. In order to estimate the street, take the address number, cancel the last digit, divide by two and then add or subtract the avenue’s magic number which is listed below. For example, 523 3rd Ave.: Cancel the “3” to get 52, then divide by two to get 26, then add the magic number for Third Ave., 10, to get 36. So 523 Third Ave. is near 36th St.

Hayes Greenfield, jazz artist, and Leah Kornfeld Friedman, playwright, are with the REP for the 2014-2015 season — presenting original music and new plays monthly, along with REP stakeholders June Rachelson Ospa, Joe Battista and Chip Deffaa. Guest artists Jude Narita and Dui Jerrod will bring their solo shows to the packed ongoing production schedule, featuring Rapunzarella White as the inhouse kids’ show and Andrew Goffman’s The Accidental Pervert, now in its fourth year. The 13th Street Rep continues to support new work, proud of their history in the Village, furthering the vision and spirit of its founder, Edith O’Hara.
There is no one I admire more than Edith O’Hara, the indefatigable 98-year-old founder/artistic director of the 13th Street Rep. Since 1972, she’s proudly called that unique little theater home. I first met Edith about a quarter-century ago. I was impressed by her idealism; she wanted her theater to be an incubator for playwrights, directors, actors; a place where they could experiment, feel free to do fulfilling work, and have fun. She’s taken 12

justifiable pride in the fact that her little theater has helped showcase many talented folk, early in their careers. Chaz Palminteri got his start in her theater, she’ll tell you. And Christopher Meloni. And Amy Stiller. A young-not-yet famous Jamie DeRoy performed in that theater in The Drunkard (the music director was Barry Manilow). I mounted four different productions in the theater last year, and the Rep has always brought me luck. We’ve made cast albums and have gotten publishing deals as a result of doing shows at the theater.

When I think of the name La MaMa, it has two meanings for me. First, it’s the living mother of all indie theatre companies. The experiments that were nurtured at La MaMa in the 1960s and ‘70s by artists like Sam Shepard, Harvey Fierstein and Lanford Wilson made everything that’s happened since in downtown theatre possible. I think in certain ways, the overall theatre scene has backslid, but not in the fundamental idea that it is 100% valid for anyone to plant their flag and say, “I am a theatre company, and this thing I am doing is theatre.” That spirit of freedom was pioneered at La MaMa. The other meaning in the name… Well, having known the late Ellen Stewart and current Artistic Director Mia Yoo, I can say that they both have radiated the same quality, an ethic of being welcoming and nurturing, of hearing and supporting and providing for La MaMa’s artists — not just materially, but morally. La MaMa goes to bat for its shows. I’ve been seeing theatre there for over 20 years, and have had the good fortune to have work presented there for about eight. HORSE TRADE THEATER GROUP Erez Ziv, the Grand Poobah of gofor-broke theatre in the Big Apple, once told me a story about the origins of UNDER St. Marks. Years before it became a 40-seat theater, lord knows how long ago, this cramped basement space was home to some sort of voodoo boutique. If you were in the market for black magic, apparently this was where you’d want to shop. When Erez shuffled in to gut the floor and build his stage, he found an abandoned handmade voodoo doll buried under the boards. Let that sink in for a moment: A voodoo doll. Under the floorboards. And what does Erez do? He tosses it out! UNDER St. Marks has been my home-away-from-home-away-fromhome for theater ever since 1999. Whenever I descend its perilous steps or hear its clanging pipes overhead, I can’t help but think of that doll and the portentous omens it delivered… UNDER St. Marks is a charmed space, a black box of black magic. “Cursed” might be taking it too far, but when Erez told me he tossed that doll, I wonder if he ever worried over what jinx he was bringing upon himself and that stage — because, well into its second decade now, that basement has housed more blasphemies of downtown theater than any other New York stage. Our own Pumpkin Pie Show, and productions from the Drama Desk-Nominated Radiotheatre, just to name a few. Maybe the curse was lifted. Maybe it’s cast upon anyone who enters that basement. Who knows? All I can say is, UNDER St. Marks remains a safe haven for this city’s witches of wacked-out theater, while every other black box below 14th Street keeps going the way of the dodo. Whatever’s keeping that theater alive, it sure feels like magic to me.

Horse Trade Theater Group was founded in 1998, riding the wave of the flourishing downtown Off-Off Broadway scene. The aim was to form a self-sustaining theater group that would focus on new work and provide affordable rental space to scores of independent artists while producing a massive quantity of stimulating theater. In 1999, the Resident Program was instated, offering an artistic home to a select group of Off-Off Broadway artists, focusing on their individuality as independent companies. In 2006, Horse Trade was accepted into the Canadian Association of Fringe Festivals, and FRIGID New York was born — an entirely open and uncensored Indie theater festival, in which the artists keep 100% of their earnings.

Theater for the New City is a wacky bit of downtown Heaven. Multiple performances spaces, total freedom and a deep commitment to the Lower East Side. The remarkable Crystal Field founded it in the ‘60s and runs it with a benevolent iron fist. She believed in me when I was very young and not sure I believed in myself. I return to TNC every few years when I need to reaffirm that the theatre can be a place of joy. Yes, it is a bit rough-edged but you have to check your snootiness at the door as both spectator and creator. Once my costume designer complained as he was unpacking one of my gowns that there was sawdust on the floor. The dressing room was adjacent to the scene shop. In the true TNC spirit I had to respond “Darling, it’s like opening night at the circus.” Indeed, sometimes the communal backstage bathroom seems like one you’d find at Barnum & Bailey. With sev-

eral shows going on at all times, sharing the mirror might be a glamorous drag performer, a native Indian dancer in full regalia and a clown. The 2013 Acker Award for AvantGarde Excellence is one of many honors earned by Theater for the New City productions. In addition to nurturing and developing writers through their Resident Theater Program, TNC’s lobby gallery features the work of local artists. Their annual Lower East Side Festival of the Arts celebrates the area’s rich artistic culture and ethnic diversity, while the Summer Street Theater tour has brought a new socially conscious comedic production to all five boroughs since the early 1970s. TNC is known far and wide for their Annual Halloween Costume Ball — a raucous, multi-level theatrical event utilizing the building’s 30,000 square feet and flowing into the street.

The Playhouse, a jewel box with its proscenium stage, seats 300 and remains little changed from 1915. The Experimental Theatre is a black box that seats 60 and the underground theater space seats 99. Abrons is the home to both a dance festival and new performance festival and programs a yearround roster of theatre, musicals, dance and performance art.
2015 ushered in the centennial of Abrons Art Center — it’s mission intact, which cannot be said of most institutions today. It was built in 1915 as The Neighborhood Playhouse at the Henry Street —Penny Arcade Settlement by Lillian Wald, who founded (pennyarcade.tv) the Henry Street Settlement in 1893, was one of the 20th century’s most visionary social activists. Along with The Washington Square Players and The Provincetown Playhouse, The Neighborhood Theatre created the backbone of modern theatre in New York with hugely influential performances from Isadora Duncan to Orson Welles. Non-institutional and resolutely noncommercial, The Flea embodies the spirit of adventure and experiment that has defined Off-OffBroadway since its inception. Part playground, part laboratory, part training ground, The Flea has been home to established artists taking new risks, emerging artists developing their ideas, and mid-career artists building sustained audiences. Within its regular season are several mini-festivals, including Dance Conversations (a series of new work by mid-career dance companies and choreographers) and Music with a View (a showcase for new music). 32

The Flea was founded 19 years ago by my husband, director Jim Simpson, and a few of us Off-Off-Broadway stalwarts, to celebrate the groundbreaking new work that will not be found uptown. It is out there, innovative and a lot of fun. Now the Flea has a huge following — attracting new and established artists from all over the cultural landscape. Our mostly young audiences are lured by our world premiere productions, late night programming...and our audacious company called The Bats, over 150 of the city’s most talented, most diverse and most rambunctious emerging artists. The Flea’s mission is “to raise a joyful hell in a small space.” Our theaters are tiny but our appetite is huge. Audiences get up close and know our artists by name. For over three decades, Performance Space 122 has been a hub for contemporary performance and an active member of the cultural community in NYC and across the globe. PS122 has developed a set of programs designed to re-establish the value of live performance, provide singular experiences for audiences that inspire critical thinking, and sustain the creative process for artists throughout their career. PS122 has been a home to a diverse group of artists including John Leguizamo, Eric Bogosian, Claire Danes, Philip Glass and Blue Man Group, among many others. PS122’s support for artists strengthens the broader cultural sector by nurturing the creativity of early and mid-career artists who then go on to influence the larger performance sector and make waves in commercial arenas like Broadway, cinema, and television. In 2013, PS122’s East Village home began a much-needed interior renovation supported by the City of New York, Department of Cultural Affairs and Department of Design and Construction. The anticipated grand re-opening in early 2016 provides PS122 with a unique opportunity to increase its organizational capacity and create a physical hub for bold new works of contemporary performance.

The Frankel produces six events a year and also supports independent film by presenting work by many underground filmmakers. Thacker, an art photographer, has a rotating gallery in the lobby and in the large front window for contemporary visual artists and photographers. In today’s climate of art politicking driven by an elitism that limits opportunities for low and underfunded artists, this is a valiant undertaking and a tribute to the values of Gene Frankel — who once said, “Talent is not enough. You must also be brave.”
Given the hyper-gentrification that has decimated New York culture over the past 20 years, it is a miracle that The Gene Frankel Theatre is still in residence at 24 Bond Street, in trendy NOHO. Gene Frankel was notable in the founding of the Off-Broadway scene. An early member of the Actors Studio, he began his career as an actor but soon went —Penny Arcade behind the scenes. Frankel’s 1961 direc(pennyarcade.tv) tion of the Off-Broadway production of Jean Genet’s The Blacks, with an all black cast, is regarded as a crucial production in promoting AfricanAmerican theater. He directed over 200 shows and managed at least a dozen theaters in his long career, along with teaching acting, writing and direction. In 2003, Frankel made Gail Thacker the theater’s Managing Director — and upon Mr. Frankel’s death in 2005, his legacy passed into Thacker’s capable hands. Thacker has conscientiously continued Frankel’s commitment to theater that has a political and social conscience. The Gene Frankel is a true community theatre space and continues to create the possibility for fledgling and underfunded artists to create work. Rivington & Delancey Sts.) 212.219.0736 dixonplace.org Dixon Place, a non-profit organization, provides a space for literary and performing artists to create and develop new works in front of a live audience. Its mission is to support and nurture the development of new work and work in progress from diverse artists, and to build new audiences for the work is carried out through five main programming objectives: to present and encourage new and experimental work; to discover the needs and interests of artists of color by providing a venue in which cultural, personal, and societal issues may be explored and addressed; to furnish gay and lesbian writers and performing artists with the opportunity to present their work in a supportive and non-homophobic atmosphere; to give writers of poetry, prose, nonfiction and science fiction the chance to read and/or speak before an audience; and to contribute to the community by making Dixon Place available as a meeting place for social change organizations.
Dixon Place, founded by the energetic Ellie Covan, has been around since 1986. Now, a few years into its new space, Dixon is becoming the central creative factory for downtown performance and theater. Its mission is to nurture and showcase new work — something that other downtown institutions used to do, but after the gentrification of the mind (borrowing a phrase from Sarah Schul48

man) many other theaters prefer to host established acts from out of town and safe bets for ticket sales. Dixon presents works that happen in real, actual creative time. Many other theaters will say: “Oh we would love to book you! We have space in 2018!” But Dixon’s proposal-to-presentation timeline is leaner and meaner and more realistic. Want to mount a workshop of your new show? Send in a proposal and get booked for the next season. It also helps that Dixon Place is perfectly designed for a range of development. The theater is big and ambitious, and the lounge upstairs is intimate and boozy. Also everyone who works there is nice, sweet, and patient. I love that place!

FringeNYC THE NEW YORK INTERNATIONAL FRINGE FESTIVAL Elena K. Holy, Producing Artistic Director August 14 – 30, 2015 FringeNYC.org FringeNYC is the largest multi-arts festival in North America, with more than 200 companies from all over the world performing for 16 days in more than 20 venues. In addition to 1200 incredible performances, FringeNYC includes FringeU (afternoon panel discussions), FringeJR (shows for kids 5-12), FringeHIGH (boundary-stretching plays for teens), FringeAL FRESCO (free outdoor events), FringeART (participatory art projects) and FringeCLUB (a late night hang-out for artists & audiences).
Why is the New York International Fringe Festival special? For me, the most potent reason is that it brings well over 100 new American plays and musicals to NYC theatergoers for its two-week stay in the Lower East Side, East Village and West Village. Think about it: commercial and mainstream nonprofit NYC theaters support perhaps a few dozen new American plays per season, while FringeNYC provides the opportunity to see more than 100 in just two weeks — most of them from emerging, undiscovered, and/or underrepresented voices. It’s not only exhilarating, it’s essential and vital. Thirteen years ago, I said — in public, without thinking much about it — “nytheatre.com will review every show in the New York International Fringe Festival this year.” I said it because it seemed like a cool idea — one of those Mount Everest56

ish sort of milestones worth trying to accomplish — and, much more importantly, because every show that participates in FringeNYC deserves to get at least one review (and too many of them weren’t getting that). Well, we figured out how to review every show in the 2002 FringeNYC. Since then, nytheatre.com and its successor site (nytheaternow.com) published a review of every show, every year. We did it in the blackout year, and we did it in the year when a hurricane forced the festival to close early. Over the years we also added a variety of preview features to our FringeNYC coverage, so that the artists responsible for these shows could tell potential audience members about their work as they were creating it. The idea is always to enable more and more engagement with the work. This year on our flagship site Indie Theater Now we’re going to ramp up our signature “gavel-to-gavel” FringeNYC coverage with a new approach that will bring artists and audiences together in the weeks preceding and during the festival in a novel and exciting way. Maxwell Anderson’s fast-paced 1933 Pulitzer Prize winner, Both Your Houses, had its Metropolitan Playhouse revival just weeks before the 2012 general election.
Metropolitan Playhouse is one of the jewels of the downtown theatre scene, with a unique mission that it fulfills admirably and engagingly. It specializes in American plays of the late 19th and early 20th century, offering occasional works that one has heard of but rarely if ever
Now in its Twenty-third season, Metropolitan Playhouse is devoted to the exploring and enriching America’s theatrical legacy and the discovery of that tradition’s place in world theater. Metropolitan focuses on three types of production: forgotten American masterpieces, new plays based on America’s history and literature, and works from around the world that put these American works in context. The current season is devoted to plays about Progress — emotional, political, cultural.

seen, and much more often works which, even when popular in their own day, have been undeservedly forgotten. With invariably strong casts and illuminating direction, Metropolitan gives new life to these works — revealing their theatrical power and, not infrequently, their continuing relevance to today’s social, cultural and personal concerns. Season themes tie the works together and put them in dialogue with each other, but the real achievement of the theatre is in the revelation of worthy but undeservedly forgotten dramas from our country’s theatrical past. Their ongoing work continually enriches and deepens our national dramatic heritage, and the many pleasurable evenings I have spent in this theatre have proven a most rewarding blend of entertainment and enlightenment.
