Get a Taste of Brooklyn at this year’s Brooklyn Eats F
ood and beverage professionals from across the country and the world will soon sample the Borough of Kings at Brooklyn Eats. During Brooklyn Eats – the Brooklyn Chamber’s annual celebration of Brooklynmade food and drink – patrons will have an opportunity to taste some of the borough’s premier culinary products all under one roof.
Noble Tree
From chocolate to pickles and pita bread to pasta sauce, Brooklyn Eats is proof that the artisanal, small-batch manufacturing industry is alive and well. Each year, the Brooklyn Chamber gathers over 100 vendors along with local, national and international buyers to showcase some of the best that Brooklyn has to offer. Starting as a restaurant show in 1998,
Dub Pies
Brooklyn Eats highlighted the finest eateries in the borough. Guests sampled dishes from cuisines found across various neighborhoods in Brooklyn, and were encouraged to then visit these local establishments. By 2013, Chamber President & CEO Carlo A. Scissura saw Brooklyn Eats as an opportunity to help the ever-growing food and beverage manufactur-
ing industry. Many of the makers at Brooklyn Eats have also been certified Brooklyn-Made by the Chamber, ensuring that their products are truly manufactured locally. Brooklyn Eats will be held on June 24th at the New York Marriott at the Brooklyn Bridge. For more information about the event or to attend, visit www.BrooklynEats.com.

Fighting for the Rights of the Disabled Community
B
rooklyn Center for Independence of the Disabled (BCID) has been a strong advocate of the rights for people with disabilities for 60 years. Providing advocacy, information, referral and other frontline services, BCID is dedicated to guaranteeing the civil rights of people with disabilities. One way that BCID is making a real change in Brooklyn is through its newest campaign, “Opening Doors: Enable Brooklyn.” The Opening Doors Campaign has been promoting disability-friendly stores and businesses throughout Brooklyn by awarding striking certificates and publicity to businesses which are taking the initiative to welcome people with disabilities into their stores. Stores like Luke’s Lobster on 237 5th Avenue. This popular seafood shack is in a store with a step to the entrance, a familiar story for many Brooklyn storefronts. Local resident Ji-Eun Kim, a wheelchair user and disability advocate, wrote to the store to make them aware that she, like many other people with disabilities, is unable to access the store, and ultimately is forced to take
her business elsewhere. In response, Luke’s Lobster brought and fitted a portable ramp and plan to do the same for all of their stores. Katie Love, the project manager for “Opening Doors: Enable Brooklyn” said, “Luke’s Lobster is a great demonstra-
tion of a store willing to be inclusive to those with mobility issues, and will see an increase in business and promotion as a result.” The “Opening Doors: Enable Brooklyn” campaign has awarded over 30 certificates to qualifying stores throughout Brooklyn (look out for the window decal around town) and plans to get that number to 1,000. Katie Love says, “Taking part is quick, easy and very rewarding! Even if the store is limited in its access, we can give expert suggestions and ideas to help. Mainly, we want to raise awareness and celebrate our local businesses!” Taking part is free. If you would like more information, please email openingdoors@bcid.org or visit www.bcid. org. You can also follow us on Twitter (@BrooklynBCID) or Facebook (www. facebook.com/BrooklynBCID).

MORTGAGE HAS CHANGED. MORTGAGE HAS CHANGED. T he Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce and Greenpoint Chamber have agreed to a partnership that will make the full array of Brooklyn Chamber programs and services available to Greenpoint Chamber Members. Through this agreement – which was made at the Greenpoint Chamber’s Annual Meeting in March – all Members of the Greenpoint Chamber will also become Members of the Brooklyn Chamber. The partnership is part of an organizational grassroots effort by the Brooklyn Chamber to work with local business organizations and community groups to provide assistance to more businesses and entrepreneurs across the borough. “The Brooklyn Chamber is a direct service organization, and this partnership with the Greenpoint Chamber will make it even easier for North Brooklyn businesses to access and take advantage of everything we have to offer,” said Brooklyn Chamber President & CEO Carlo A. Scissura. “Members in Greenpoint, Williamsburg, and Bushwick will now have all the support their businesses need to foster expansion and success. The Brooklyn Chamber is proud of this partnership, and we look forward to growing this already fruitful alliance with the

Successfully Transitioning Beyond the First Generation The “WHY” Behind the Failure of Family Businesses
E
ach family business has their unique story. Whether the business started as a vision, by accident or by matter of circumstance, business owners typically sacrifice a great deal to see their business vision to fruition. So then why is it that only one in three family-owned businesses make it to the second generation?
Percentage of Family Businesses Surviving beyond the First Generation Survive to the Second Generation
30%
Survive to the Third Generation
12%
Survive to the Fourth Generation
3%
For many family businesses, the intention is to pass the business down to future generations. Unfortunately, a family-owned business has roughly a one-in-three chance
of ownership succession. What’s more, only three percent of family businesses make it to the fourth generation. Makes you wonder what’s happening, doesn’t it? Well, actually, it’s not as stunning as you may think. Below is a quick “thought to ponder” about Cornelius Vanderbilt along with the “three” most common causes for the lack of family businesses surviving beyond the first generation.
Thought to Ponder Cornelius “The Commodore” Vanderbilt was the second wealthiest American to ever live. He was estimated to be worth approximately $150 billion in today’s dollars. The only wealthier American was oil tycoon John D. Rockefeller, who by the time he died in 1937 had massed one and a half percent of America’s total economic output. To control an equivalent share today would require a net worth of approximately $340 billion dollars. Cornelius built his fortune as a steamboat entrepreneur. Then in 1862, when he was
nearly 70, he started buying railroad lines, which happened to become the source of the vast bulk of his wealth. And yet, according to Michael Klepper and Robert Gunther in their book, The Wealthy 100, by the 1970s, the Vanderbilt family held a reunion with 120 members attending, and there wasn’t a millionaire among them.
Trust and Communication Breakdown The research indicates that wealth often becomes a source of friction and dispute among family members, which leads to a lack of trust and breakdown in communication. Family businesses are no different than any other type of relationship (marriage, friendship, mentor/ mentee, etc.) – without clear communication and trust, failure is inevitable. One of the main recommendations we share with matriarchs and patriarchs of family businesses is to relentlessly pursue “truth and trust” at all costs. Without these two elements, there is no solid foundation to build upon.
Failure to Prepare Successor Generations It is not good enough to transfer only business interests, titles, buildings, and other assets to future generations. We would say it may even be more important to transfer the knowledge, experience, values and the wisdom which helped create the business’ success. Often, in the pursuit of creating a successful business, the investment of time in preparing the next generation becomes greatly reduced, ultimately reducing the chances of the family business perpetuating beyond the third generation. Our observations have shown us that successful families and businesses intentionally identify, train and equip the next generation to carry forward the family business, wealth, name and legacy to future generations.

hen David Sheridan lost his job as a marketing manager in 2012, it opened the door for him to pursue his dream of becoming a chef in his own pizza restaurant. The son of an Italian mother, he enjoyed making pizza so much that he built a wood-fired oven in his backyard. Realizing that starting a business required a great deal more than knowing how to cook, David combed the internet and found SCORE. After attending a business planning workshop, his mentor, Munir Saltoun, guided him in developing a plan which would serve as a roadmap for his restaurant’s future. Before long, David was signing a lease in the Ditmas Park area of Brooklyn and preparing to launch a pizzeria that would feature unique toppings, salads, cocktails, and specialty sodas. “The most helpful part of the process was formulating the financials,” said David. “Our plan told me the numbers we needed to reach over time, and it was reassuring to know I was headed in the right direction.” Although David might have been a bit optimistic about his first year, he found that in a little more than two years, he was hitting his sales targets and he was able to purchase the building in which his restaurant is located. He is now planning an expansion of menu offerings and restaurant space to accommodate a growing clientele. “SCORE mentors are all experienced executives who serve as invaluable resources to help novices realize their dreams,” David
said. “Basically it was a two-step process. I learned the questions to ask by attending the workshop and got the answers from my mentor. Believe in yourself – just do it!” Contact SCORE if you would like a mentor to help you take your business to a higher level. Whether its marketing, finance, or production help you need, SCORE is an excellent resource for entrepreneurs and its experienced mentors will work with you for FREE. It also offers practical and low-fee workshops to teach you skills you can use immediately. Go to www.newyorkcity.score.org and sign up for mentoring and workshops. You’ll be glad you did.

Make the Most of Your Chamber Membership Work with Strategic Partnerships and Special Events Staff
Y
ou may have noticed that the Brooklyn Chamber prides itself on the development of relationships amongst our membership, catalyzed in large measure through the special events that support our industry sectors, our members’ priorities and our diverse neighborhoods. We’d like to introduce you to our team that makes up the Strategic Partnerships and Special Events Department and tell you a bit about what they do. Our department head, Lori Raphael, is Vice President of Strategic Partnerships. Lori manages our special events production efforts, making sure that our events are funded, align with our member and sponsor missions and deliver the Chamber message throughout the borough and beyond. She is responsible for the direct account management of many of our larger and institutional members, ensuring that their member and sponsor experiences enhance their business goals throughout their membership year. We will shortly announce the hire of a new Director of Special Events, the staff position that acts as the lead on event production, graphic design and vendor relations. The department’s activities are supported by Special Events Coordinator and recent staff addition, Cristina Lombardo. Effective partnerships with members are the glue that holds a chamber of commerce together, ensuring that promises to members are met, their business’ brand is understood and well represented, and their interests are always prioritized when the Chamber develops new programs, sets its agenda and advocates for a better economic climate. One of the ways we work with our members is to meet prior to their upcoming membership year to pre-determine needs that allow the business to set its level of membership, promotional activity and sponsorship that fit the needs and budget of the company. All of our members should feel free to contact Lori at any time to talk about ways to add value to their membership, so the Chamber can be an effective partner to you.
One thing all Chamber staff can agree on is that members who come out to events and become active members of the Chamber community receive more benefits from their membership. The Chamber produces an average of two morning events and one evening event per month that are free for members to attend. Our morning programs tend to have a topical or educational component intended to be tools for your business, and our evening events encourage networking among members. Whether you attend a Chamber Visits to meet businesses in a neighborhood that is new to you or a Young BK Professionals event to see what the next generation of leadership is about, numerous opportunities to use your membership are available. We urge you to try to attend at least a couple of major events a year. These events have ticket and sponsorship prices attached to them that support the work the Chamber does for its members and to offset production costs of our higher profile events. Attending a trade show such as BKLYN DESIGNS or Brooklyn Eats is a great way to get to know the products and members that make up our local manufacturing base. Members of the real estate community and those of us who love architecture come out every year for the annual Building Brooklyn Awards. At the end of the year, our Winter Gala at El Caribe is the most festive way to come together with your colleagues and employees to celebrate the season. In short, we hope to hear from you, and better yet, see you frequently over the course of your membership year – the Brooklyn Chamber team is always here to help. IPW Continued from Page 22
Shop at Brooklyn Borough Hall. IPW New Orleans will provide a showcase for Brooklyn to attract even more visitors, generating additional revenue for our local businesses and creating good jobs for our communities.” For the first time ever, Explore Brooklyn will be a Platinum Sponsor of the annual NYC & Company Client Event happening at IPW 2016. It is with great pleasure that our organization can partner with the official marketing, tourism and partnership organization of New York City. “Brooklyn’s energy and appeal are recognized around the world,” said Fred Dixon, NYC & Company President and CEO. “We are pleased that the borough will again be well represented at IPW this year, and we are excited to showcase the many vibrant and authentic experiences that can be found throughout its diverse neighborhoods.” Brooklyn’s culturally-diverse neighborhoods welcome guests from all over the world, and the borough’s never-ending options give both locals and visitors a reason to stay here. Whether you’re looking for the most authentic, best-tasting international cuisine in the country or an intimate dinner scene, you’re guaranteed to be well fed. Brooklyn is also home to Michelin-starred restaurants including Peter Lugers Steak House, Blanca, La Vara, Meadowsweet, Pok Pok, and more. Grab some Greek food in Bay Ridge, jerked chicken in Flatbush or cannoli in Bensonhurst. Our connection to the world, in addition to our reputation for being the trailblazer of culture, innovation, and entertainment, has led to a significant increase in the number of travelers visiting Brooklyn when planning a trip to New York City, with almost 10 million visitors in 2015. Brooklyn is the most populous borough
of New York City, and it is quickly becoming the most popular borough for visitors, as well, thanks to a network of transportation options that include rail, bus, and ferry service. Brooklyn was full of developments, activities, and surprises this past year. Hotel inventory continues to grow, with recent openings from the Holiday Inn Downtown and Dazzler Brooklyn, and upcoming developments such as the William Vale, Williamsburg Hotel, and 1 Brooklyn Bridge Park, among others, slated to open by the end of the year. New York Marriott at the Brooklyn Bridge continues to undergo a $40 million renovation to both towers, with a beautiful new lounge and tons of Brooklyn-made products. With over 4,500 hotel rooms available in Brooklyn and over a dozen new hotels scheduled to open by 2018, accommodations in the borough are plentiful and available in all neighborhoods. Entertainment in Brooklyn also continues to reach new heights. The historic Kings Theatre opened its doors in February of 2015 after a $94 million restoration that began in 2006. The Barclays Center, the highest-grossing arena in the U.S., welcomed back the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and became home to an NHL team, the Brooklyn Islanders. The Amphitheater at the Coney Island Boardwalk will host its first show in late June, being the first official concert venue to open in southern Brooklyn. These spaces and attractions have only enhanced Brooklyn’s longstanding world-class institutions and landmarks. From Coney Island, to Flatbush, to Sunset Park, and Bushwick, Brooklyn’s neighborhoods have the arts, entertainment, parks, communities, sporting events, shopping, and dining that have turned the Borough of Kings into a global destination. Simply put, there is no stopping Brooklyn. Come for business or come for leisure – but definitely come to Brooklyn!

Building a better healthcare system for Brooklyn. Keeping Brooklyn healthy is our mission. That’s why The Brooklyn Hospital Center has teamed up with community health care providers, physicians, civic leaders and legislators to design a dynamic new system that will transform healthcare for more than a million residents of northern and central Brooklyn.
