Food, Friends & Fun This summer, Campfire Grill & Bar is heading two floors down to guest the Downtown Camper Café with a menu loaded with mouth-watering comfort food. At this prime location by Stockholm’s most popular walking street, a brand new patio and terrace is offering front-row seats to Drottninggatan, the “aorta” of Stockholm. Catching up with Robin Trygg We got to know Robin a few years ago, as he was pitching his latest idea: During Downtown Camper’s inauguration party, he wanted to send the guests up and down in a portaledge hanging from the façade of the hotel.

Needless to say, we instantly liked him. Robin Trygg, who has a long resumé of expeditions, is maybe best known for mountain climbing at high altitude. He was first in Sweden to climb Mount Everest from both Nepal in the south and Tibet / China in the north, and a new film about his adventures is coming out this summer. Hard to imagine, but Robin is a city kid from start; he’s a genuine Stockholmer and still has his base here. We asked him to share his best tips in a ’nature vs city’ guide, and you can read the result on page 13 in this paper. But first - let’s catch up with Robin.

Hi Robin! How come you chose this exciting way of life?

I had my first climbing experience in Corsica just after graduating from college, and couldn’t let it go after that. I started travelling around the world to climb different peaks; everything from Kilimanjaro in Africa, Aconcagua in South America and Mont Blanc in France. At some point I managed to become the youngest person in Sweden to climb the world’s highest mountain, Mount Everest, and here I am.

Tell us about Trygga Resor.

After climbing Mount Everest a second time in the spring of 2016, I started a travel agency called Trygga Resor: The idea is to take people to the foot of the world’s highest mountain. This business idea has become a huge success, and every year since then, we have been taking groups hiking in the heart of the Himalayas. Also allowing me to stay in touch with my friends in Nepal. Through Trygga Resor, I lecture in widely different places around the world - from Shanghai to Båstad.

So what are you up to now?

This summer, the feature film about my latest climbing expedition on Mount Everest is finally being released: A story that I hope will show a different perspective on this magnificent area. It was shot in spring 2015, as Chhiring and I found ourselves in the middle of an earthquake catastrophe in Tibet. It also depicts the time that followed this event. I dare say that this is a quite unique documentary film in many ways.

I will also be visiting the morning studio on TV4, where I will guide the viewers in various outdoor activities such as hiking, climbing and canoeing. We hope to inspire more people to get out there: Having an adventure in your region What’s your greatest adventure? is possible, you’ll be surprised. This whole pandemic is terrible in every way, Well, except for becoming a father - an unreal experience that changed my life however; we now have a golden opportunity to discover our own country, and in many ways - my favourite adventure is Nepal and the Himalayas. After my Sweden is incredibly beautiful. many years of climbing, I have seen loads of places, but nothing even comes close to the magical Himalayas. Stockholm?

I am very proud of being selected as an ambassador for the wonderful organisation Min Stora Dag [My Special Day, Ed]. Together we help children with critical illnesses and diagnoses to fulfil their dreams. I am so happy to be a part of that.

Nature VS City DOS & DON’TS

When it comes to the great outdoors vs the city, it goes without saying that entirely different codes of conduct apply. Robin Trygg – one of our favourite adventurers / expeditioner and a Stockholm resident – has made a few observations.

Here are some helpful dos and don’ts to keep in mind when adapting to your new environment.

Hi or not to hi?

Maybe the most important thing to remember: Always say hi to the people you meet on the path/ trail. Should you slip by without a word, people will think you’re a psycho. Funny enough, the exact opposite applies to the city: Sometimes even saying hi to a neighbour is wrong. Awful but true, but I figure there must be a good reason. Here’s my theory; survival of the fittest! If you are living the busy life, always on a deadline, running from A to B, you would probably be at risk being hit by a bus if you don’t watch your step. And there are simply too many people. So play it safe, be cool and keep on walking.

What to wear In Sweden, we have a saying: ”Det finns inget dåligt väder bara dåliga kläder”, which roughly translates to ”there’s no bad weather, only bad clothes”.

You get our point – keep it practical and useful when packing for the outdoors. Feet are important; make sure you have good footwear and stay dry. Less is not more here, bring colours - you want to be easily spotted in case hunters lurking in the bushes. In the city, everyone’s favourite colour seems to be black. This colour became a big hit a few years back and unfortunately seemed to have stuck with most people. A black t-shirt camouflages you well in town; you’ll blend in with the crowd.

So go with black, and you are safe.

Topics of conversation Focus on the moment. Talk about the weather, how long you’ve walked, how much berries or

mushrooms you found and rare birds. In the city, we live in the future. If you pass the first awkward phase of getting to know someone here (we’re talking the time with cynicism, scrutinising and finally, awkward conversation getting to know each other), topics of discussion may or may not move to more rewarding topics. You may also find yourself talking about stuff like career, real estate prices, whether you live in a rental or condominium, or why not the new hip bar down on the corner.

What to eat While out trekking, remember to travel light.

Freeze-dried food might not be the most fun, but it will keep you alive. Spice it up with some spruce shoots or maybe treat yourself to a nettle soup. My tip; use what you have, and get creative (but stay away from pretty, red mushrooms). Staying in the city? Well, maybe your cuisine will not be much different from spruce shoots and nettles. The trend right now is the local produce which you will see if you visit some of the many Michelin-starred restaurants in Stockholm. The most significant difference will be that hole in your wallet.

of backpack or the weather. The longer the hike, the better, and time is no object. Getting to where you need to go in the city can sometimes be a challenge, especially as city people always seem to be short of time. If you can go where ever you need within 30 minutes, consider yourself a winner.

Grab an electric scooter, roll down the street on a skateboard or take the tube. Here’s another thing; city people seem to train their entire lives to find the best shortcuts; especially if it’s raining. That new laptop case too heavy to carry? Uber is the way to go.

Fitting in People travel from all around to walk the best trails in our vast country. Being genuine is of high value here, so be yourself. It’s as simple as that. And what’s more charming than a regional accent? In the city, what can I say, it’s more about fitting in, and you can’t fit in if you don’t talk like everyone else. So get rid of your accent or don’t - but at your own risk.

Top destinations Most outdoorsy people will track down the most challenging and deserted tracks and enjoy the fresh air in solitude - the longer and trickier the terrain, the better. In the city, you might find yourself looking for the exact opposite: The most popular watering holes, you know, the kind of place you need to visit to prove you are up to date. Stunning views are never wrong though – works for both city people and nature lovers. And let’s be honest, no matter where we go we all like to be able to brag a little to our friends and get that new, cool selfie.

How to stay Trust me, and I know what I’m talking about here – in the wilderness, you choose your basecamp according to the philosophy of ’the rougher, the better,’ and with no roof/tent, you get your million-star hotel in the sky. If you can’t sleep without it being pitch black, Sweden’s outdoors is not for you. The sun comes up around 3 am and goes down as late as 10.30 pm in the summer. Maybe the city is for you then: The basecamp highest on your list, then you’ve come to the right hotel. The trendiest and most centrally located, where you can sleep under a sky of artificial spotlights or block out any trace of light with black-out curtains.

Means of transportation Your legs play a key role in your being able to explore the wilderness. If you got legs, you can walk, run, climb, swim or even crawl through the most challenging stints. No matter your 15 kgs

The music plays softer, and there are fewer people in the retreat. As the evening approaches, the music shifts to an ambient pool club vibe as the adjacent cocktail lounge opens. You are not allowed to talk on your phone, but if you want to take a picture as a memory to keep from your visit, you are more than welcome. Children are amazing, but up here, they are not our primary focus - we have other spaces in the hotel where kids can be kids. This is a place for adults to socialise and regain energy.
