The enthusiastic planner who has everything booked and scheduled way in advance? Or the spontaneous adventurer – a free spirit who lets the wind and tides be their guide?

I’m a bit of both. I love the planning part, when I’m researching a destination and dreaming of the things I’ll do and see. But I also love just driving on down the highway with no plan and seeing where the road takes me. No matter what kind of vacationer you are, if you’re doing it in Newfoundland and Labrador, this Explore guide is meant for you.

Hospitality is taken to heart by our tourism business operators, from the boat tours to the B&Bs, and the shops to the shows. Everyone works very hard to give you the most memorable, enjoyable experience. If you want to give someone or some place a special shoutout, or you want to crow about the awesome summer you had in Newfoundland and Labrador, Downhome magazine welcomes your photos and stories. Readers love them and so do we. Submit your summer story online at www.downhomelife.com; email it to editorial@downhomelife.com; or mail it to Downhome, 43 James Lane, St. John’s, NL, A1E 3H3.

Have a wonderful summer!

Wild Blueberry Pudding

This classic pudding can be made with other freshly picked wild berries – crowberries (NL blackberries) or partridgeberries, for example. And you can make it in whatever baking dish you have available at your cabin, campsite or B&B, from a metal or glass 8x8 baking dish, square or round, to an aluminum foil pie pan. Whatever berries you use, whatever dish you bake it in, it’s going to be delicious!

1/2 cup sugar

1/2 cup butter

1 egg

1/2 cup milk

1 1/2 tsp salt

1 tsp vanilla

1 1/2 cups flour

1 1/2 tsp baking powder

1 cup blueberries

1 cup brown sugar

1 cup boiling water

Preheat oven to 350°F. Grease an 8"x8" pan. Cream together sugar, butter and egg in a large bowl (if using tart berries like partridgeberries, you could add one or two teaspoons to the sugar if you like). Add milk, salt and vanilla. Blend. Add flour and baking powder and mix well. Sprinkle a little flour over blueberries and gently fold them into mixture. Spread mixture into greased pan. Sprinkle brown sugar over top, followed by the boiling water. Bake for 30-35 minutes. Serve warm or cold.

Opened in 2009, the Green Moose Interpretation Centre explores the complex and changing inter-relationships between people and the land. Decades of logging around Roddickton have created an unexpected result: the perfect moose habitat. Roddickton (the “Moose Capital of the World”) now has the largest density of moose in North America. A nuisance to some, moose (an introduced species) are now woven into our way of life and may even prove to be the key to our future. Come and see our moose and polar bear!

Pet Friendly Travel Tips

Make sure your pet’s tag has a number on it where you can be reached on vacation, such as your cellphone number.

Keep your pets content and out of trouble in the car and in your temporary accommodations by packing their favourite toys and blanket.

To keep your pet safe in the vehicle, have them ride in a kennel large enough that they can stand and turn around in, or have them wear a harness that attaches to the seat belt, to keep them snug in their seat.

If your pet is susceptible to car sickness, ask your vet about motion sickness medication.

On long drives, just like for people, schedule breaks where your pet can get out to stretch their legs and get a bathroom break.

Keep their heads inside the cabin. Having their faces to the wind heading down the highway puts them at risk for injuries caused by bugs and debris flying into their eyes, nose and mouth at high speed.

Pack a travel bowl and fresh water to keep your pet hydrated.

Where to Meet a Newfoundland Pony

Throughout most of Newfoundland’s history, the Newfoundland pony was a common sight in communities and on homesteads. They were favoured for their strength and for their hardworking, loyal and gentle nature. Descended from hardy horse breeds brought to this island by early settlers from the British Isles, the Newfoundland pony evolved over generations of local breeding into a new and unique breed. For its historic role in the province’s settlement, it’s been declared a Newfoundland and Labrador Heritage Animal.

However, as farming machines overtook actual horse power in the 20th century, many Newfoundland ponies were sent to slaughter. Today the ponies are a critically endangered breed. Fortunately, there are individuals and groups dedicated to preserving and promoting the pony. The more people know about them, the better their chances of survival. To learn their full story, check out the website of the Newfoundland Pony Society (www.newfoundlandpony.com). And here are the few places where you can actually meet these beautiful creatures and discover for yourself what makes them so special.

Newfoundland Pony Heritage Pasture

This is a newly created open space where Newfoundland ponies frolic and graze during the summer. From South River, a walking trail takes you to and through the pasture. You can admire the ponies from outside the fence (DO NOT feed them, as it could kill them), or you can arrange a more personal tour. Contact Tammy Webber (strawberrypony99@hotmail.com) for more information and to arrange a tour.

The Devoe Ranch

Several Newfoundland ponies live on this farm in Upper Ferry, along with other horses and a variety of farm animals. You can meet them all and even arrange a pony ride. Find them in the Codroy Valley and on Facebook @DevoeRanchOfficial.

Change Islands

Newfoundland Pony Refuge

One of the oldest Newfoundland pony shelters in the province, this is the only place in NL where registered Newfoundland ponies are officially bred. Here you can meet some ponies and request a ride. Contact Netta LeDrew at 709-621-6381 or email: nfponyrefuge@hotmail.com.

And while solo hiking has its rewards, not everyone has the confidence, nor the desire, to commune alone with nature. The Avalon Mall, a cutting edge shopping centre in Newfoundland and Labrador, has undergone quite the transformation in the last 2 years. There’s much to celebrate. The shopping complex, opened in 1967, underwent its largest makeover ever in a four-year, $112-million expansion and upgrade. It includes a new four-storey parking garage and expanded parking, redesigned roadways and building entrances, and a modernized food court that combines convenience and comfort with environmental consciousness. The Mall’s footprint has increased to 593,000 square feet of gross leasable space and features some exciting new retailers.

The fun doesn't stop there, this year we continue to bring new retailers to the Avalon Mall, or "The Mall", as locals call it. Visit Avalon Mall and experience why Avalon Mall is a center city hotspot.

For generations of mariners along this coast, the light at Cape Bonavista was their only connection to land while out on the dark sea. Built in 1843, the Cape Bonavista Lighthouse is one of the few in the world where you can still climb up the stone tower to see the same seal-oil fuelled light used in the 19th century. A prime location to see whales, icebergs and puffins.

Guide to Gulls

With files from wildlife technician Todd

You see them everywhere and, at first glance, they might all look alike. But there are eight species of gull in the province: the large grey and white Gluacous gull with yellow eyes and bill, plus the following seven more.

Black-Headed Gull

Named for their dark-coloured heads, these gulls are mostly seen in coastal marshes, grasslands, swamps and around rivers. They are known to inhabit the Stephenville Crossing area and some overwinter in St. John’s.

Herring Gull

Black-legged Kittiwake

These small gulls are also known in NL as tickle-ace, tickle arse, tickle ass and fairy bird. They have white heads, light grey backs and wings, and black legs. Kittiwakes are commonly seen at the Cape St. Mary’s and Witless Bay ecological reserves.

Continued on p.92

Most common gull in North America, frequently seen perched on a seaside rock, on a lamppost or even the hood of your car outside a fast food restaurant. Look for their large, yellow bill; yellowringed eyes; pink legs; and light grey and white feathers.

www.exploredownhome.com 90 : explore 2023

Ring-Billed Gull

A.k.a. pond gull, it’s accurately named for the dark band on its beak. They are wild birds that prefer the company of people – or at least the food they leave around. These gulls are found in pretty much any parking lot in the province.

Iceland Gull

This medium-sized gull is white overall, with a pale grey back. The wing colour varies, mostly from white to grey. Their beak is yellowish-green and their legs are pink. They stay mostly close to the coast and are seen hanging out with other gulls.

Great Black-Backed Gull

Locals call them saddlebacks or blackbacks, and they are the largest of our gulls. They have white heads and breasts, dark grey to black backs and wings, and yellow beaks with a red or orange dot. They can be seen almost anywhere.

Ivory Gull

This small Arctic gull is known locally as “ice partridge.” They are bright white with yellow-tipped beaks, black eyes and black legs. They are most likely to be seen on pack ice in the Davis Strait, Labrador Sea, Strait of Belle Isle and the northern Gulf of St. Lawrence.

The crew at Bannerman Brewing transformed an aging fire station into a bustling café, brewery and event space that’s now one of the busiest spots downtown. (The extensive renovations earned the business a Southcott Award for heritage preservation.) Getting Your Boat Ready

Before you launch your boat for the first time this summer, read over this checklist.

❏ Clean the boat inside and out. Wash the exterior with proper fibreglass cleaner; regular household cleaners could scratch the surface. Finish with a coat of wax.

❏ Inspect the hull, seats and other vinyl/canvas surfaces for cracks, tears and mildew. Repair and clean surfaces with the proper cleaner.

❏ Replace the gas, change the engine oil and oil/fuel filter, and refill the cooling system.

❏ Examine the fuel line and hoses for cracks.

❏ Reinstall all batteries that you took out for the winter. Make sure they’re fully charged. If necessary, top up battery fluids with distilled water.

❏ Remove distributor cap, clean it and reinstall it properly.

❏ Inspect the steering system and lubricate where necessary.

❏ Start the engine and make sure it is running smoothly before taking your first trip. Check all the gauges.

❏ Reconnect all electronics that were disconnected over the winter (eg. GPS, radio etc.) and test that they’re working properly.

❏ Make sure all safety equipment (eg. lifejackets, fire extinguisher, first-aid kit, emergency flares etc.) is in good condition and securely stowed.
