JERRY DEEGAN Dear Friends, A good friend of mine once wrote, “A Catholic school is a place to learn and develop skills…but most importantly, a Catholic school is a place to learn, articulate and practice our faith. The goal is not the transmission of facts from one head to another, but rather the transformation of one’s life by the surrender of one’s heart to Jesus and His Gospel…to foster a faith and let God’s providence do the

rest.” I believe his statement and I believe transformation happens at Dowling Catholic, is deeply embedded in our culture, and is lived out in our service to others ranging from local projects to international programs.

On the cover is a photo taken during a service trip to Brazil. Members of Terra Livre, which is featured in this issue, traveled to Goiania, Brazil, during spring break to work with impoverished youth. Service trips and other activities offer ways for students to come face to face with those who are suffering, those who are in need, or those who have met with unfortunate circumstances in life and need a hand. I am extremely proud of our students, faculty and staff who, on their faith journeys, surrender their hearts to Jesus and His Gospel and offer service to a hurting world that is dying for love.

I want to congratulate Dr. Dowdle and the faculty and staff on our state accreditation visit last December. The visit went very well and the school was complimented in the areas of mission focus, professional development and collaboration, student leadership, student services, growth in diversity, and using assessment data to make instructional decisions. The state team was very impressed with the enthusiasm of the students, staff, and community members they interviewed during their visit. The team recommended continued work in the ever changing area of technology in the classroom and enhancing collaboration across disciplines. We look forward to using the results of the visit to drive our work going forward.

Meendering brings 24 years of experience to the position having served as a coach, business teacher and an administrator. He has been the principal at Sheldon High School in Sheldon, Iowa, for the last eight years.

Each student has a different role: Faraz Mohd is the leader of the group with advanced coding skills; Daniel Nielsen is the editor/videographer; Tristan Clubb does the graphic design; and Noah Nordengren is the content manager. Each student has basic coding skills, but the majority of the coding work is done by Mohd.
