ATTENTION: FRAGILE Delicate skin under the eyes calls for special care

By Jana Manolakos, Staff Writer, Spa Inc. In a study published in 2014, researchers at the University of Kentucky, College of Medicine, suggested that UV exposure may account for up to 80% of visible signs of aging in the skin including dry appearance, scalping, wrinkling and pigmentation, and that premature aging of the skin due to exposure to UV rays correlates with cancer risk. Does it really take fewer muscles to smile than to frown? We’re not sure, but we do know that when you smile, so do your eyes. The skin around them, also known as the adnexa, is a distinct and fragile area that deserves special attention. It moves constantly as you laugh, cry and squint; to give you some perspective, researchers at Japan’s Osaka University identified that your eyes blink about 28,800 times per day. This constant tugging and pulling of the eye contour skin, as well as stress, dehydration and aging, take their toll, making it prone to thinning and loss of elasticity. This skin is already 10 times thinner than anywhere else on the body – and much more vulnerable to harmful bacteria, sun damage, hormone changes and aging. It also has fewer oil glands and can suffer from dehydration much faster. The unique composition of the skin around the eyes needs careful nurturing. But not all skincare creams are created equally, so use a product specifically

formulated for the eyes. The key words to look for on eye cream labels are “gentle,” “non-irritating,” “moisturizing” and “oil-free” (to prevent clogged glands that can lead to styes), along with an assortment of vitamins, herbal extracts, antioxidants and plumping ingredients. As skin renews itself – about every two weeks, and almost twice as long for people over 50 – it leaves a layer of unsightly dead cells on the surface that inhibit moisture retention. For the eye contour area, a very mild alpha hydroxy acid should be used to gently exfoliate these dead cells and enable new skin to flourish from beneath. And, don’t underestimate the power of healthy living: Drink plenty of water, exercise, eat nutrient-rich foods, don’t smoke, avoid alcohol, stay out of the sun, wear sunglasses and get good-quality sleep. So go ahead. Smile. You’ll feel better and look better.

BECOMING QUALIT Y ASSURANCE APPROVED: RIVERSTONE SPA Diane Sparrow is the owner of Riverstone Spa at Inn at the Forks, a hotel spa in Winnipeg, Manitoba and a member of SIAC’s Quality Assurance Approved program. She spoke to us about what it means to be a QAA spa and why she decided to be part of the program. What made you decide to put Riverstone Spa through the Quality Assurance Approved assessment process? Being involved and part of the Quality Assurance Approved program gives a spa business the edge. It provides them with more integrity as a spa operation, as a business, and it also gives that extra level of assurance that our consumers are getting a safe and quality experience. What sort of issues and areas in the spa does the QAA assessment cover? There are six primary areas: 1) legal compliance, 2) ethical practice, 3) hygiene and safety, 4) education and training, 5) the operation and function of a business, and 6) the protocols for customer service. So it starts from the front end of your business to the very back. How do you turn the QAA assessment and its results into an opportunity to improve your spa operation? The fundamental criteria [for the onsite QAA assessment] are best practices, and that’s a way to say to the spa, if you don’t have it that’s fine, but if you want to get to another level, here is a suggestion. Also, I think it’s important to understand that, what’s so fantastic about this program is that it’s not out to get you. It’s meant to educate and to help if in any area a spa didn’t meet that requirement, they will help you get there. After a QAA assessment, do you sit down with your staff, debrief, and plan what you want to do differently? If changes are needed, absolutely. If the criteria aren’t met, the changes that have to be made are implemented. The bottom line is that it’s for the betterment of the spa operation and it’s for your customer, to provide the best treatment possible and to develop that loyalty, which is very hard to do. Do you educate your clients about what it means to be a QAA spa and what they can expect from you? Absolutely, you have to do that, and you have to be prepared because your spa consumer is very knowledgeable and getting more so all the time. When questions are asked to our staff, they have to be prepared to be able to say, yes we comply in terms of, let’s say, our sterilization procedures, this is what we use, this is what’s expected in the national standards. We are displaying our QAA seal of approval, that’s saying to the consumer that they’re going to have a quality and safe experience. What do you want your clients to know about being a QAA spa? I want them to know that, as a business, we have taken that extra step to ensure that their safety and the level of treatment they will experience meets national standards.

Après une évaluation de la QAA, vous asseyez-vous avec votre personnel, faites un compte rendu et planifiez ce que vous voulez faire différemment? Si des changements sont nécessaires, absolument. Si les critères ne sont pas remplis, les changements à effectuer sont implémentés. En fin de compte, c’est pour l’amélioration du fonctionnement du spa et pour le client, qu’il reçoit le meilleur traitement possible, et la renforcement de la fidélisation du client, ce qui est très difficile à faire. Est-ce que vous éduquez vos clients sur ce que signifie être un spa QAA et sur ce qu’ils peuvent attendre de vous? Absolument, vous devez faire cela, et vous devez être préparé parce que votre consommateur de spa est très bien informé et de plus en plus tout le temps. Lorsque des questions sont posées à notre personnel, elles doivent être prêtes à dire: oui, nous respectons les procédures de stérilisation, c’est ce que nous utilisons, c’est ce qui est prévu dans les normes nationales. Nous affichons notre sceau d’approbation de la QAA, c’est-à-dire au consommateur qu’il aura une expérience de qualité et sécuritaire. Que voulez-vous que vos clients sachent d’être un spa QAA? Je veux qu’ils sachent que, en tant qu’entreprise, nous avons pris cette mesure supplémentaire pour nous assurer que leur sécurité et le niveau de traitement qu’ils connaissent seront conformes aux normes nationales.

Why is Leading Spas of Canada’s Quality Assurance Program important to Spa-goers? Though the spa industry remains largely unregulated, Leading Spas of Canada™ developed the national “Quality Assurance” program, helping guide the health and hygiene standards for your safe visit to the spa. Leading Spas of Canada (LSC™) offers the only national program of its kind in Canada. The Quality Assurance program was created for the sole purpose of providing specific, detailed criteria governing the safety and operational practices of spas, with the goal to help educate and protect spa guests and staff. T he Quality Assurance Program criteria were created with input from spa industry experts and medical professionals, including physicians. T o maintain the integrity of the program, assessments are conducted by specially trained, third-party inspectors with significant experience and expertise in health and safety inspections. T he Quality Assurance program is not a rating program; there is no sliding scale. All criteria must be met or exceeded, with each individual checkpoint resulting in a strict pass or fail. G uest preferences for spa experiences vary depending upon their needs, location and budget.
