Is Organic Skin Care Better? By Sherina Jamal, founder and CEO of Ancient Secrets Inc., developer of the Beauty Through Balance Spa Line

The majority of us want to make healthier choices in the foods we eat and what we put on our skin. Buying a skin care line labelled organic or natural can be a good choice, however before you buy, it’s important to have more awareness about what organic and natural really mean when it comes to the skin care industry. Factors to consider when shopping for skin care products: There are many misconceptions out there about organic skin care products. First, it’s important to keep in mind that to call a product organic, not all ingredients have to be certified organic. Second, even if a product claims to be organic, the certification could just be referring to a few select ingredients in the formula sometimes used in a lower percentage. It is also important to note that even if a product is organic it can still have commonly used synthetics such as petrochemicals, sulfates, propylene glycol, mineral oil, fragrances, and colours. There are ways to actually “hide” the use of certain synthetics such as preservatives. Unfortunately, in the cosmetic and skin care industry, the labelling laws are still fairly slack when it comes to the authenticity of the claims made such as natural, organic, eco-friendly, and preservative-free, so it’s easy to get confused.

Rather than focusing on whether a product or its ingredients are organic, I feel it is more important to be sure that the product is safe. In natural and organic products, the more food-grade ingredients you use in the formula the more chances that there can be accelerated levels of bacteria, mold and yeast. It is important that the product is safe and stable. The other thing to look for is whether the organic product is free of commonly used synthetics and contains pure ingredients that are not over-processed. When it comes to skin care, the word organic has less to do with specific benefits to the skin and more to do with just letting you know what form the ingredient classified in the formula is in. It can also have a lot to do with marketing and growing revenues.

Becoming Qualit y Assurance Approved: Riverstone Spa Diane Sparrow is the owner of Riverstone Spa at Inn at the Forks, a hotel spa in Winnipeg, Manitoba and a member of SIAC’s Quality Assurance Approved program. She spoke to us about what it means to be a QAA spa and why she decided to be part of the program. What made you decide to put Riverstone Spa through the Quality Assurance Approved assessment process? Being involved and part of the Quality Assurance Approved program gives a spa business the edge. It provides them with more integrity as a spa operation, as a business, and it also gives that extra level of assurance that our consumers are getting a safe and quality experience. What sort of issues and areas in the spa does the QAA assessment cover? There are six primary areas: 1) legal compliance, 2) ethical practice, 3) hygiene and safety, 4) education and training, 5) the operation and function of a business, and 6) the protocols for customer service. So it starts from the front end of your business to the very back. How do you turn the QAA assessment and its results into an opportunity to improve your spa operation? The fundamental criteria [for the onsite QAA assessment] are best practices, and that’s a way to say to the spa, if you don’t have it that’s fine, but if you want to get to another level, here is a suggestion. Also, I think it’s important to understand that, what’s so fantastic about this program is that it’s not out to get you. It’s meant to educate and to help if in any area a spa didn’t meet that requirement, they will help you get there. After a QAA assessment, do you sit down with your staff, debrief, and plan what you want to do differently? If changes are needed, absolutely. If the criteria aren’t met, the changes that have to be made are implemented. The bottom line is that it’s for the betterment of the spa operation and it’s for your customer, to provide the best treatment possible and to develop that loyalty, which is very hard to do. Do you educate your clients about what it means to be a QAA spa and what they can expect from you? Absolutely, you have to do that, and you have to be prepared because your spa consumer is very knowledgeable and getting more so all the time. When questions are asked to our staff, they have to be prepared to be able to say, yes we comply in terms of, let’s say, our sterilization procedures, this is what we use, this is what’s expected in the national standards. We are displaying our QAA seal of approval, that’s saying to the consumer that they’re going to have a quality and safe experience. What do you want your clients to know about being a QAA spa? I want them to know that, as a business, we have taken that extra step to ensure that their safety and the level of treatment they will experience meets national standards.

Il est destiné à éduquer et à aider si dans n’importe quel domaine un spa ne répond pas à cette exigence, ils vous aideront à y arriver. Après une évaluation de la QAA, vous asseyez-vous avec votre personnel, faites un compte rendu et planifiez ce que vous voulez faire différemment? Si des changements sont nécessaires, absolument. Si les critères ne sont pas remplis, les changements à effectuer sont implémentés. En fin de compte, c’est pour l’amélioration du fonctionnement du spa et pour le client, qu’il reçoit le meilleur traitement possible, et la renforcement de la fidélisation du client, ce qui est très difficile à faire. Est-ce que vous éduquez vos clients sur ce que signifie être un spa QAA et sur ce qu’ils peuvent attendre de vous? Absolument, vous devez faire cela, et vous devez être préparé parce que votre consommateur de spa est très bien informé et de plus en plus tout le temps. T he Quality Assurance Program criteria were created with input from spa industry experts and medical professionals, including physicians. T o maintain the integrity of the program, assessments are conducted by specially trained, third-party inspectors with significant experience and expertise in health and safety inspections.
