WHY TRIPLE-GLAZED WINDOWS MATTER IN THE SUMMER

As temperatures rise, keeping the heat out of your home becomes just as important as keeping warmth in during the winter. That’s why Doug Tarry Homes builds with triple-glazed windows as a standard feature.

Our windows combine three panes of glass, Low-E 366 coating, and an insulated Super Spacer system to dramatically reduce heat transfer. Low-E 366 reflects a large portion of the sun’s heat while still allowing natural light inside, helping keep your home bright without overheating. The insulated Super Spacer further improves performance by reducing heat loss around the edges of the window. The result is a home that stays cooler, more comfortable, and more energy efficient, while reducing the workload on your furnace! At Doug Tarry Homes, high-performance windows aren’t an upgrade—they’re part of building a better home.

Open concept vs.defined spaces

If you’ve been exploring new home designs lately, you’ve probably noticed a shift. For years, open concept layouts dominated the market—large, flowing spaces that blend kitchen, dining, and living areas into one. But lately, more homeowners are asking do wereallywant everything open

It creates a bright, airy feel, maximizes natural light, and makes it easier for families to connect. Whether you’re cooking dinner while helping with homework or hosting guests, an open layout keeps everyone part of the same experience. It also makes spaces feel larger, which is especially valuable in modern home design.

Another important factor is how people live in their homes day-to-day. Open spaces are great for entertaining and family time, but defined areas can help reduce noise, improve focus, and create a sense of retreat. The right layout

What to choose?

However, as lifestyles have changed, defined spaces are making a strong comeback. Homeowners are starting to value separation and privacy in ways they didn’t before. A dedicated office with a door, a quiet reading nook.

What we’re seeing now isn’t a complete shift away from open concept—it’s a smarter balance. Many homeowners want the best of both worlds: open main living areas combined with strategically placed enclosed spaces.

So, what’s winning? The real winner is thoughtful design. Instead of choosing strictly open or fully defined, more homeowners are embracing layouts that offer both connection and comfort. It’s about creating a home that feels open when you want it to, and private when you need it to be.

SOURCES OF AIR LEAKAGE IN DUCTS

This is an insertion point in your ducts that is generally used to insert a vacuum or brush for cleaning. While useful, you will see that around the plate, there is no taping, and the little gaps around it will be a source of leakage. These leakage points occur along duct work, especially when sections are made to join one another, and there is inadequate sealing around those joints. Make sure that those joints and other potential sources of leakage are taped up or sealed using other means to ensure minimal air leakage.

For best results, use Aeroseal to seal your ducts, and get up to 95% of your duct surface area sealing, making your HVAC more efficient! Find out more at hometight.ca

A message from our President

WHO HELPED SHAPE DOUG’S JOURNEY TOWARD NET ZERO?

My journey toward Net Zero building was shaped by people who challenged me, inspired me, and helped me see what was possible.

The first person I’d like to point out is my dad, who taught me a deep respect for the land, the community, and the responsibility that comes with building homes. He lived by the saying, “Always leave your campsite better than you found it.” That simple idea has become part of the foundation of how Doug Tarry Homes builds today.

I like to believe, building better has never been just about constructing houses. It is about thinking carefully about the impact each home has on the people who live in it, the community around it, and the environment it becomes part of.

I’d also like to credit several leaders in the building industry who helped guide and inspire me along the way, including Alan Churchill, Gord Cooke, and Tex McLeod. Their knowledge, innovation, and willingness to push the industry forward helped shape my approach to highperformance, energy-efficient homebuilding.

Today, that influence continues through Doug Tarry Homes’ commitment to Net Zero Ready and energy-efficient construction. It is a commitment rooted in respect, responsibility, and the belief that every home should be built with the future in mind.
