Joyce Weinstein: Country Fields

Page 1

Joyce Weinstein’s distinguished career has been propelled by her acute observations of the world around her, and her ability to translate what she sees into paintings with inspired invention and abstracted playfulness.

The artist builds layers of movement and shape in an inspired manner. Her mixed media paintings balance a freedom of gesture with a fervent sense of form.

Finding inspiration from what she sees around her, Weinstein also draws on her body of work for ideas for new pieces. “The work gives me ideas for new work,” Weinstein remarks. “It’s just like a continuation. You're working on one continuous painting, even though you're doing one painting after the other.”

Born in 1931 in New York, Weinstein studied at the City College of New York and the Art Students League, and had her first solo exhibition in 1953 at the Perdalma Gallery in New York City. Weinstein has shown her work around the United States, Canada, and Europe, and was included in the groundbreaking “Women Choose Women” exhibition at the New York Cultural Center in 1973, the first major museum exhibition of contemporary art by women.

The exhibition resulted from the activism of an organization Weinstein co–founded, called Women in the Arts (WIA), aimed at seeking a cultural shift toward women artists. After spending her early career as often one of very few women in the male–dominated art world, Weinstein was a leader in ushering in change. The group picketed the Museum of Modern Art and other galleries prior to the opening of the “Women Choose Women” exhibition.

Weinstein’s work has been widely collected by museums internationally, including the Centre de Creacion Contemporanea Museum in Barcelona, Spain, the Clint Eastwood Collection in Palo Alto, California, the Edmonton Museum in Canada and many more. The Museum of Modern Art owns Weinstein’s pastel on paper work, Cityscape (1980), with its furious broad horizontal strokes that stack up like towers.

In 1992, Weinstein moved to Ancramdale, New York, with her husband, Stanley Boxer, a painter and sculptor who also held a successful career until his death in 2000. The scenic location proved fruitful for Weinstein, whose work subsequently reflected the bucolic landscape of her surroundings.

In Summer Country Field with Green and White (2015), Weinstein employs bold gestures: a bulbous shape intersected with pastel lines, and a pool of near–white movement, rippling with energy. The work hearkens to its natural world inspiration, with a strip of green squiggles within a rectangular border, and a cascading burst of floral–inspired splashes.

Another work, First of Spring with Red (2001), boasts a line of easter egg–colored ovals sitting playfully at the bottom painting. They look out at an expansive wintry landscape, with hints of life that spring will soon bring. A daring circle of red surrounds the scene: it's both joyful even as it hints at the drama of the changing seasons. Her paintings often employ geometric forms with distinctly irregular lines. In some ways, she contains the ideas found from nature into containers, sorting them in an improvised geometry. The result is a bold statement on how we remember what we see. Her art form is a communication of memory and emotion, a vibrant translation of beauty with assertive strokes.

Joyce Weinstein Artist Statement, Biography and CV

Although abstract, I paint what I see... the beautiful countryside all around me... the rolling hills, mountains and distant views... the ever changing sky, nearby fields, woods and streams ... old barns ... haystacks ... weeds and wildflowers ... everything. The colors I see every day always seem to "appear" in the paintings: a sudden bright red, like a single flower all alone in a field of brown, tans and umbers... or the red of an old barn sitting in a field of snow or the colors of newly cut corn fields and the changing hues of sky, grass, trees and bushes all around me. I don't think of these things while I am painting, but after the work is done ... they remind me of all these things that I had seen.

My work is another kind of "landscape painting" resulting, I believe, in paintings which are more "real" than a literal interpretation. The "essence" of what has been seen and felt is there, making what is seemingly ambiguous, most tangible and unique... which is what I think "good art" is all about.
