The Vela Supernova Remnant has a devilish sense of humor. It loves to fool we earthlings. For one, its outer rim of shock waves is eight times the size of the full moon yet is invisible to the unaided eye. It hints at its 11,000 year old presence via vague wisps in large amateur telescopes — and even then only with special filters. The Vela remnant is very close to us at 935 light years. Most of its radiation arrives as gamma and X-rays, plus some synchrotron radiation from magnetic fields. To rub it in even more, there are not one but three supernova shells hiding within that huge ellipse. One of them is an upstart newcomer some 3700 years old in Puppis that is four times further away. The other, dubbed “Vela Jr.”, is a younger supernova some 2400 years old (give or take) and much further away at 1500 light years. In 1968 University of Sydney astronomers discovered the first evidence that that the Vela pulsar is a highly magnetized neutron star 12 miles in diameter that is spinning 11 times a second.
