INTRODUCTION In June, 2008, the last property of my family’s 65 year old farm in Jacksonville was sold for industrial development. I photographed what remained on the property to record our family legacy. These images tell a story of an immigrant family’s success in America, and contain an emotional expression of personal memories and reconciliations of the past.

In the spring of 2010, I applied for and received a Community Foundation in Jacksonville grant to bring this body of work to a level where it can be shared with the public, and to inform, inspire, and motivate others to explore their own past. The grant resulted in a public exhibition of 30 photographs at the PhotoJax Festival in September, 2011.

In the summer of 2014, an exhibition of 40 photographs was re-mastered for the Lufrano Intercultural Gallery at the University of North Florida and on display from August to December of 2014. The completion of this project enables me to provide closure to the accomplishments of a courageous family with a proper recognition and record for future generations to discover.

THE PROJECT As a native and resident of Jacksonville, I have always been impressed with the diversity of people and places in and around the city. An unlikely attribute of the city is its notoriety as a leading producer of Chinese produce in the 1940s-1960s. The Wing Lee Yuen Truck Farm on Imeson Road was started by 3 brothers, one of whom was my grandfather, Jung Fie Ng. At one time the farm encompassed over 300 acres and on June 18, 2008, the last property of the family farm was sold for industrial development. It was the end of an era and a time to be soon forgotten.

In September 2007, I photographed the barn and adjacent properties. The project began almost by accident, when at the insistence of my wife Dorian, I reluctantly called my Uncle Chan to ask if all the big tractors were sold. I knew that the farm was for sale but did not know any of the details. I had not returned to the farm since my father passed away 1993. My Uncle Chan told me that only one big tractor was left, and that I’d better get out there soon because many of the relatives had already taken things out of the barn. I arrived the next morning.

These photographs tell a story of hardship and success of an immigrant family in America. This is a story of my own beginnings and many childhood memories. The symbolic “barn� is the main subject of my investigation. I let the barn speak though my images about the workings of the farm. A simple but imposing structure, the barn housed the equipment, the workshops, the storage, and the shipping areas for production of all the produce. For decades, thousands of crates of vegetables would be either trucked or flown daily out of Jacksonville to supply hundreds of grocery stores and restaurants across the eastern US and Canada.

The adjacent property contained several houses and storage sheds. The primary residencies of my grandfather and his brothers consisted of 3 brick ranch-style homes facing Imeson Road. My father had 12 brothers and sisters. His uncles also had large families. I remember that my grandfather prided himself on his immaculate lawn and flowerbeds, always full of blooming plants. He had a big, white Chrysler Imperial parked in the garage, which was only used for weekly trips to church and the grocery store.

My record of the Wing Lee Yuen Truck Farm documents the accomplishments of my family and conveys the emotional experience I had during the photography. I knew the scenes would be destroyed and lost forever, with my images being the only remaining visual record of the farm. Certainly an important part of the cultural history of our nation and an important personal record for my aunts, uncles, and many cousins whose lives the farm touched. I believe we all need to explore our 6

origins to ground our presence and perhaps answer those personal questions about meaning in our lives.

In retrospect, I wish I had been more thorough with my study, but I captured what caught my eye at the time. The images sat for a while and in 2010, I applied for and received an Art Ventures grant from the Community Foundation of Jacksonville to produce an exhibit of the photographs at my studio downtown. In the winter of 2011, On Fertile Ground was shown to a small audience during the PhotoJax Photography Festival, and then I put things away.

In early 2014, the film maker Clif Brewer offered to make a video and I decided to open the project again. With the completion of the Artist Statement video I was inspired to do another iteration of the exhibit. I was fortunate to have an exhibit scheduled at the Lufrano Intercultural Gallery at the University of North Florida for the late summer of 2014. I actually changed my original proposal to accommodate this new iteration. I’m grateful that the gallery directors were so flexible to my request. I embarked on a completely new edit and rework of all the digital negatives.

Every image was reexamined, reprocessed, and reprinted to reflect my current capabilities and artistic intent. As I work through the images again and share them with others, I realize how important it is to understand our past. I am fortunate to have photography as an expressive medium and hope that this exercise can inspire others to connect with and celebrate their past.

… And, finally, this is what I need to say to you. There are things in your life that only you will see, stories that only you will hear. If you don’t tell them or write them down, if you don’t make the picture, these things will not be seen, these things will not be heard.

ARTIST STATEMENT As long as I can remember we visited the family farm once a month. It was a long drive across town, down a dirt road, to three brick houses situated in the middle of nowhere, a bit of civilization in what seemed to be fields that went on forever. Now those days are long past, the houses recently abandoned, and the last of the land up for sale to make way for warehouses.

As I drove up to the farm on a hot August morning the fog was covering the roads and fields. My Uncle Chan was leaving for an early errand and I was left on the property, completely alone, with my camera and a lifetime of memories. I had not returned here since my father died 14 years ago but nothing had changed.

As I walked around the big barn I began to see and notice what I had never realized in all my times here. The smells, the sounds, and the nostalgic feelings were all there, but the details of hundreds of still lifes unfolded around me. Each square foot of the barn was filled with actions frozen in time. A hammer left on a tiller, gloves on a spool of wire, a chain hanging from the rafters used to pull an engine, ropes and wires hanging on nails, the scale which weighed out countless boxes of Chinese produce which at one time were shipped out as far as Michigan and New York. All of these scenes were frozen in time, the dust settled over them, but the life in their arrangements only temporarily arrested.

I knew that it was my time to record these moments with my camera, for in a matter of weeks all of this would be gone, destroyed, and never to appear again. As an animal or plant goes into extinction, so too do these articles of a past time and life.

My record would be the only one for the future should anyone want to know what it was like in the barn of the Wing Lee Yuen Truck Farm.

PROCESS LOCATION SESSIONS The first day of shooting was September 2, 2007. I arrived at about 8:50 am and it was foggy, which is rare for a September morning in Florida. Usually when I arrive at a location I take general shots to establish location and then hone in on details. My first shots were of the approach and the overall barn. Since it was foggy on the first day I didn't want to miss capturing the mood of the fog so I stayed outside for a while.

Then I found the tractor and proceeded to go through the barn in a methodical sequence. Many scenes were familiar, like the pile of seedling cans and the stacks of crates in the mezzanine. It was the old building smell that really triggered the nostalgic feelings more so than the visuals. I was mentally spent after 4 hours of shooting on the first day. I didn't bring any lunch and didn't want to stop for a break.

I know my Uncle Chan figured I'd be there for an hour. After checking in with him periodically he was a little surprised when I told him I was finished for the day but needed to come back. "Ok Douglas, you can come back anytime!"

The last big tractor

The following day I arrived at 9:45 am and checked in with Uncle Chan. I decided to go down the road to look at the houses where the families lived. Imeson Road had always been unpaved for as long as I can remember. My Grandpa used to resent the dirt road and said the city was too cheap to pave it. All of the roads surrounding the farm were eventually paved, but Imeson was left as is until UPS decided to open a distribution center on Pritchard Road, then Grandpa got his wish. The lawns were still being mowed but the houses were abandoned and the "For Sale" signs prominently on display. I didn't venture close to the houses knowing that would be left to another session. Uncle Chan invited me into his office where 2 old roll top desks were located along with the big safe. The desks were piled with papers and miscellaneous things, and there was a portrait of my great-grandmother and greatgrandfather hanging on the wall. I walked over to the barn and entered into the barn office where I remembered there was a time clock for the workers and the safe where 79

the seeds were stored. These items were gone, but there were plenty of things strewn about. I was wondering if the chaos was a result of the move and people rummaging through things or if this is the way things have always been. I then captured some details and climbed the rickety ladder up to the mezzanine. This is where the crates and barrels were stored and there were plenty of them piled up. I left at about 3 pm and told Uncle Chan, "I'll be back!"

It took 2 weeks before I was back. On September 15, I dropped by in the evening with my friend Tom who was interested in a few of the items Uncle Chan was trying to give away. Tom took a wheelbarrow, a rowboat, and managed to come back with a forklift to take the old scale. I should have called an antique store to come gather all of the old wheelbarrows and tools, furniture, and cooking utensils. There was so much in the barn and it ended up going to the landfill. I shot a few details and arrived again the next morning at 9 am. This day of shooting was less profound. A few additional details but the novelty of the place had disappeared. I spent some time talking to my Uncle Chan about what he was going to do, where he was going to live, and if he thought he would miss having that big old barn and 100 acres to look after. There were plenty of other stories about my dad, the bean sprout business, and when the first refrigeration equipment arrived. All in all, this was a good day for stories and photographs.

On September 23, I was back and decided to explore the other buildings and the farm houses. It was very hot and humid and I remember the mosquitoes were hungry.

I went to my Grandpa's house where I stood in the driveway where we parked our car countless times. Everything was overgrown which I know would upset my Grandpa who kept an immaculate lawn (and house). He was a true "gentleman" farmer. I wondered around all the houses, looking through the windows, and impressed with the way the brick held up. Behind each house was a utility shed of some sort. There were several of these small buildings on the property and I remember that most of them held cars and lawn equipment. I explored each one, most were in bad shape with nature taking over. I found an old tricycle in one of the sheds and later learned that it belonged to my Uncle Quon. Going back further into the woods I found another utility shed which I later learned was built by my Uncle Gat for his workout equipment.

At 2 pm I said goodbye to my Uncle Chan and told him I might be back, but I never returned. The last image I took is one with some wildflowers in front of the barn.

A few months later I learned that everything was gone. "Everything?" I asked. "Yes, they leveled the property and everything is gone." It's hard to believe. For some reason I always thought the farm would be there. It was always there, as long as I 81

could remember. I didn't confirm this fact until January, 2013, when I drove by the property for the first time since that September in 2007. Yes, it is really gone.

IMAGE DETAILS I’m always curious about the technical information behind a body of work, maybe because I hope to glean a tip or technique to help me improve. These images were made in the fall of 2007 using a tripod mounted Canon 5D (the original version). I utilized whatever lighting there was in the barn, which turned out to be fine in most cases. I find existing natural light the best for these situations. The lenses used in the photography were: EF 16-35 f/2.8L USM, EF 24-70 f/2.8L USM. EF 70-200 f/2.8L IS USM. I tended to use the 24-70 the most, followed closely by the 70-200.

September in Florida is still a time of high heat and humidity, gnats and mosquitoes.

The first morning I was lucky to have some fog but most days were hot and humid.

There’s something about inclement weather that seems to bring out the best in me.

Maybe it’s the suffering in the process or the smell of Deep Woods OFF. Originally I processed images and performed the B&W conversions with Adobe Lightroom (Process 2010) on a Windows PC. Any updates are made using Lightroom 5.4 Process 2012. Most images have highlight and shadow adjustment, contrast, and dodging/burning, but very little (if any) image editing was performed.

PRINTS All digital files were re-mastered for the Lufrano UNF exhibition using Lightroom 5.5. From the time of the original exhibition in 2011, both my skills and tastes have changed, and each image was re-examined with fresh eyes. Photography offers the opportunity to continuously evolve a piece as you personally evolve over time. The current set expresses a deeper emotional connection to the subject, perhaps a bit darker, more somber, and with greater attention to detail.

Prints are made with an Epson 9900 large format printer, Epson Ultrachrome HDR inks, using the Epson Advanced B&W Mode set to Darker, 10, 20. The paper used for both the 16 x 24 and 11 x 17 prints is Epson Hot Press Bright, a smooth, archival, 100% cotton rag paper. For the folio prints I used Epson Cold Press Bright. The exhibition catalog was produced using Microsoft Word and exported to a PDF file, then uploaded for printing on Magcloud.com. Images were toned for the publication in Lightroom using a Split Tone of highlights 50/15, shadows 25/10.

ABOUT DOUG ENG I have enjoyed diverse careers as a Professional Engineer in the power industry, a software programmer, and a small business owner. My education includes degrees in Structural Engineering at Cornell University and an MBA from the University of North Florida. I am pursuing a lifelong interest in photography and have studied at various workshops throughout the country. I have won numerous awards in juried competitions and am published in several magazines. My photographic specialties are urban and natural landscapes. Jacksonville, FL is my home and I am involved in several projects to revitalize our city’s urban core through the arts.

My visual fascination with my surroundings, whether built or natural, comes from many years of trying to understand why things are what they are. An engineering discipline seeks to explain and rationalize the world, and to develop solutions to problems. My curiosity about forms, structures, patterns, rhythms, and textures is a natural outgrowth of the need to find order in all things.

But it is chaotic randomness that creates uniqueness and vitality. Our world is both simple and complex, structured and random, free and bound‌all in a simultaneous expression of what IS. This is my realization through photography and these are the subjects of my investigations.
