Neo Nomad, Trans-Season 2018

2

Neo Nomad It is human nature to desire to see, experience, learn, do. It makes our horizons a little broader, and the distance between us a little smaller. And, inevitably, it changes us. There are smells we can’t un-smell. Tastes we can’t un-taste. Sights we can’t un-see. A little piece of everywhere we go weaves itself into our fabric. This is the inspiration behind our fall and winter collections. Colors of deep, dusty sunsets. Embellishments that tell a story. Flowy fabrics that make you feel free to roam. Our trans-season drop channels the Neo Nomad, the traveler-trader who collects the pieces that move her as she journeys, and yet introduces elements of where she’s been to each new place she goes. It’s a fluid exchange of influence and design. It’s how East makes it to the West, and back again. It’s a modern-day Silk Road.

Lighten Your Load The natural nomad is less concerned with what she takes with her than what she is bound to find. Encumber yourself with as little as possible. Minimize your makeup. Greet the fresh day with a fresh face. Rub in a tinted moisturizer (with SPF!), dust a neutral matte on your eyelids, and kiss your cheeks with a rusty rose. Treat your hair to a vacation as well. Leave your tools and products behind. Untangle washed locks with a widetoothed comb and let your tresses airdry and fall how they may. If you’re headed for active adventures, bun it, braid it, or even bandana it, but for just a few days, don’t make it do anything it doesn’t naturally do. Pack with purpose. The tried-and-true method for slimming your suitcase is to make sure every piece is both useful and versatile. A light field jacket. If your journey takes you anywhere with altitude, you can count on an overnight chill. Tees and jeans. The mix-and-matchability of your favorite basics can turn a handful of garments into dozens of outfits. Worn-in boots. Now is not the time to break in a new pair, but boots are durable, easy to slip on and off, and if you’ve got a good pair, they’re the most comfortable footwear you own. A hat. If your adventure leads you outdoors, your hat has you covered. Plus, it’s an excellent quick-fix if your hair isn’t adjusting well to its “vacation”.

Studs and Stones Once overstated and only-forthe-edgy, metal embellishments have taken on a more ubiquitous everyday vibe. Mixing metals -- silver, brass, weathered bronze, and even copper – is a dazzling-but-subtle way to give the garment a dimensionality of design that widens its wearability. Additionally, alternating sharper shapes, like square-pyramid studs, with more rounded ones, like dome studs or even eyelets, can add an element of softness that can turn a jacket or pair of boots from nighttime to all-the-time. And of course, the quintessential cowgirl fashion favorite: put some turquoise on it! Silver and turquoise accents on leather jackets, denim, and all styles of boots have evolved into amiable and enviable garments suitable for everything from brunch to barhopping. (Check out page 69 for a gorgeous example of multi-medium embellishment.)

Pin Interest Whether they adorn your hat, your bag, or your trusty denim jacket, a knowing eye discerns them as wearable nostalgia, akin to merit badges of surviving long, dusty road trips through the Southwest. How to Pack a Hat With hat boxes not nearly as prevalent as they once were, airline travel for your favorite headwear can be a little confounding these days, but it can be done! We’ve had success with all three of the following methods. In your suitcase: Build it a nest. Fill it with smaller items that you’re not concerned about wrinkling (undergarments, socks, pajamas, etc.), and structure your other clothes in a way that creates a bit of a “hole” in which you can nestle the crown and maintain its shape. TIP: Pack it toward the upper half so less weight bears on it when your suitcase is upright. In a carry-on: This isn’t always an option, but if your baggage situation allows for it, carrying your hat in a tote and storing it under the seat in front of you during your flight, is a good way to ensure that it arrives in the same shape. TIP: Do not put it in the overhead bin, as it’s likely to get crushed. On your head: Of course, you’ll have to take it off at security, but it’s probably the most sure-fire way to guarantee your hat gets where you’re going in tip-top shape!

Home Sweet Heimweh say: “haym-vey” Heimweh is your new favorite word you haven’t heard of yet. There is no English word that accurately sums up the sentiment, but it’s so universally relatable that once you learn it, there is no doubt you’ll be working it into your vernacular. Heimweh is a German word often roughly translated to “nostalgia” or “homesickness”. It has been perhaps more accurately explained as “longing to travel to a place where you feel at home”, which is both beautiful, and in a way, painfully poetic, and it feels like the internal flame that fuels the journey of the nomad.
