News
We are a non-profit organisation that plays a crucial role in supporting the elderly in our local community. We are an independent charity established over 60 years ago and are not affiliated with Age UK – 100% of all donations we receive go directly back into supporting our work.
At the core of our mission is a commitment to combat loneliness and enhance the well-being of those over 55. We’re a personal social club where individuals can come together to make friends, fostering a sense of community and connection.
AGM
We held our yearly AGM on Friday 17th October for the 24/25 period. It was well attended by Trustees, Staff, Volunteers, Reigate and Banstead Council and members.
The annual report was presented, and we heard from several key speakers highlighting the positive position the charity is in this year.
We were lucky enough to secure another visit from Nicola at The

Wright Choice flowers after getting some funding for members’ activities. 22 members took part in this activity and made some lovely autumnal table decorations that they got to take home. They really enjoyed doing this and were so proud of themselves.
Be sure to follow our Facebook page and other social media channels ( Instagram) to see more photos and videos from our events.
Volunteers
In August, Geoff, one of our longstanding volunteers’ was honoured at the Reigate and Banstead Volunteer Awards.
He was invited to the Town Hall to receive his certificate from the Mayor.
Geoff has been a volunteer with us for over 15 years – as a driver, day centre assistant and the all-important bingo caller on a Friday!

Men’s Shed
The Men’s Shed membership has doubled this year and there always seems to be a hive of activity coming from the Shed. They have completed a few refurbishments around the shed space, acquired some storage and given the area a spruce up.
They have also started to attend the monthly charity sales and sell some of the tools and equipment that they no longer need or use.
They are always happy to take on commissions or projects so to discuss call the Shed Manager Scott Caldwell.

We’d like to take this opportunity to thank some of our recent donors for their support….
Without them we would not be able to provide the services that we do.
Bryan and June Amos Foundation –for their really generous donation for a new minibus.
Community Foundation for Surrey –for their Grant.
Dnata – for their donation after a charity golf day.
A current member (who wishes to remain anonymous) – for her generous donation.
Glyn Elliot (Raven Housing) -for his help.
Stellantis – for their corporate volunteering day helping us.
Coop Local Community Fund -for their grant.
Surrey County Council – for their grant. Jacks Devonshire -for their donation.
Olympic Flooring – for our lovely new flooring.
Esure – for their corporate volunteering day at the centre.
All our amazing volunteers, without their help we could not function and provide the services at Age Concern MRR.
And to everyone else who has supported us so far this year including our community for their donations and attending the Saturday sales every month!

JJ’s Epic Eats - the Best Grub Guide in Town
Costa del Sol, Horley a Taste of Spain Without Leaving Town
When you walk into Costa del Sol, you instantly feel like you’ve been transported to Spain.
The calm and chill ambience makes you want to sit back, relax, and imagine you’re on a sunny terrace by the beach. The décor is simple but full of warmth, with soft Spanish music playing in the background and the delicious smells of garlic, olive oil, and sizzling food drifting through the air.
The restaurant has an open kitchen, which I really like because you can see the chefs hard at work creating all the dishes right in front of you. An added bonus for the summer and warmer evenings is the lovely front outdoor terrace.
One of the best parts about Costa del Sol is the people.
The head waiter, Vito, is amazing. He’s been there for many years and you can really tell because he knows exactly what he’s doing. He’s friendly, confident, and always seems to be one step ahead of what you need. The owner is also there every single time, greeting customers and making sure everything runs smoothly.
It’s nice to see someone who actually cares so much about their restaurant.
They can cater to any kind of group, from a quiet table for two to big parties of twenty.
They’re also really understanding if someone in your group gets sick or can’t come so if you suddenly need a smaller table, it’s no problem. They just want everyone to have a good time.
The menu at Costa del Sol is full of choice, with loads of different tapas, mains, and paellas. Everything is very traditional, but there are a few dishes that have fun UK-style twists on them too. If you’re a vegetarian though, you have to plan ahead because the vegetarian paella has to be ordered 24 hours in advance.
Also, if you want a paella, make sure you have a bit of time to wait because they take around 25 to 35 minutes to cook. That’s how you know they’re made fresh! Me and my mum didn’t get one this time because she thought it might be too much to eat on a Wednesday night, so instead we decided to share a bunch of tapas dishes.
Continued on next page
JJ’s Epic Eats continued from previous page
We started drinks, mum had a glass of sangria which had all the fruit in just like you would expect, and we had some bread to share, served with
olive oil and balsamic vinegar, plus their homemade aioli, which my mum says is “to die for.” Then came the prawn pil pil sizzling prawns in garlicky oil with slices of red chilli floating on top. The oil was full of flavour and perfect for dipping bread into, but watch out, those chillies are HOT! Next up was the calamari. They came with a little salad and tartare sauce on the side. They were golden, crispy, and amazing only one piece was a tiny bit chewy, but it was still tasty. We also had chicken kebabs served with rice and covered in a delicious sauce. Mum saved some of that “to die for” alioli to mix in with the rice, and it tasted even better.
Then we tried raxo pork, which came with french fries. The pork was well marinated in a slightly spicy sauce that was just incredible I loved dipping the fries in it. That was my second favourite dish, but it was Mum’s absolute favourite. She even said it was better than my stepdad’s version (don’t tell him I said that!).
But my number one favourite, as always, drum roll please……. was the Patatas Bravas. the best Spanish dish ever invented! It’s made of crispy potatoes in a spicy, sweet, and totally perfect sauce that’s both hot and comforting at the same time. Mum doesn’t love them as much as I do because she’s weird, but to me, it’s the dish you absolutely must order if you ever come here.
Finally, for dessert, we shared some churros. They came with a very tasty and sweet chocolate sauce for dipping, and they were sprinkled with cinnamon sugar on top. That’s not traditionally Spanish, but I actually think it’s a great twist it makes them smell amazing and gives them extra flavour. The churros were the perfect way to finish off a delicious meal that made me feel like I was in Spain for the evening.
Overall, Costa del Sol is a brilliant restaurant that brings a real taste of Spain to our town. It’s calm, welcoming, and run by people who clearly love what they do. The food is fresh, the service is excellent, and every dish has a story behind it. Whether you’re going for a quick meal, a big family celebration, or just some churros and a chat, Costa del Sol is definitely the place to go. I’d give it a solid 9.3 out of 10 and next time, I’m definitely trying that paella!

Transform a Child's Day: Support Give a Lunch
In the heart of our community, a silent yet profound struggle often goes unnoticed.
In the face of a rising cost of living, despite the best efforts of parents and guardians, many children attend school without a proper meal, their young minds and bodies yearning for nourishment. This is where Surrey based charity Give A Lunch steps in – a beacon of help for these young souls.
A stagging 4.3 million people live in poverty in the UK, with 40% of those being children who are not eligible for the free school meal scheme provided by the government.
Since our inception, Give A Lunch has been more than just a charity; we’ve been a lifeline for children who are ineligible for free school meals through government schemes. Our mission is simple yet impactful: ensuring no child in our community goes through a school day on an empty stomach.
A milestone of compassion: Over 1000 School Lunches
Donated nothing short of inspiring. Through the generosity of our donors, we have successfully provided over 1000 school lunches.

This milestone is not just a number; it represents 1000 days where children could learn, play and grow without the pangs of hunger holding them back.
100% Donation Policy: Every Pound Goes to the Children
Unique to our approach is our commitment to financial transparency. We make the commitment that every pound raised through this appeal will directly support schools in Horley. This means that every pound you donate goes directly towards providing lunches for children in need.
When you choose to support Give A Lunch you can be certain that your entire contribution is making a tangible difference in a child’s life.
Christmas Cards That Actually Give Back
For the first time, Give A Lunch is spreading festive cheer in a brandnew way, with our Christmas card collection. Proudly designed and printed in the UK using sustainable materials, each pack of 10 cards

How you can help
Your support can make a real difference in the daily life of a child in our community. A single donation can turn a day of hunger into a day filled with hope and opportunity, while a monthly contribution provides ongoing support, giving a child the security of knowing where their next meal will come from.
Make a Donation: Visit our website givealunch.co.uk to make a one-time or recurring donation.

Selling Your Car Just Got Easier for Horley Residents
For motorists across Horley, Smallfield, Gatwick, and the surrounding Surrey communities, selling a car has traditionally meant weeks of uncertainty, countless phone calls, and the inevitable parade of time-wasters turning up for viewings. But a new service is changing all that, offering local residents a refreshingly simple alternative.
Quick Car Quote has launched an innovative platform that's making waves among vehicle owners who value their time. The concept is straightforward: enter your registration number online, receive an instant valuation, and if you're happy with the offer, sell your car directly to Quick Car Quote. No adverts to write, no haggling, no strangers arriving at your driveway.
Anyone who's tried selling through classified websites knows the drill: fielding calls from buyers who never show up, dealing with lowball offers, and spending weekends waiting around for viewings that lead nowhere.
How It Works
Quick Car Quote has been designed with simplicity at its core. Vehicle owners simply visit the website and input their car's registration number. Within moments, the platform retrieves all the relevant vehicle information and generates a valuation based on current market data.
If the quote meets expectations, the seller can accept it immediately. From there, Quick Car Quote manages everything, the paperwork, payment processing, and vehicle collection. For busy families juggling work and school runs, or retirees looking to downsize without the fuss, it's a genuinely convenient option.
The service caters to vehicles of all types, whether you're selling a reliable family hatchback that's served you well, or an older model that's simply reached the end of its useful life.
Why Local Residents Are Taking Notice
The appeal is clear. Traditional private sales require significant time investment. There are photographs to take, descriptions to write, and then the waiting begins. Meanwhile, your car sits on the drive, depreciating while you hope for a serious buyer.
Continued on next page
Selling Your car continued from previous page
Part-exchange deals with dealerships offer convenience but often at the cost of value, with trade-in prices typically lower than private sale values. Quick Car Quote positions itself between these two options, offering the speed of a trade-in with more competitive pricing.
For residents across our communities, who might be relocating or changing vehicles frequently, the speed of transaction is invaluable. The entire process can be completed within days rather than weeks or months.
Safety is another consideration that shouldn't be overlooked. Meeting strangers for test drives and handling large cash transactions carries inherent risks. Quick Car Quote removes these concerns entirely, providing a secure, professional transaction from start to finish.
Who Benefits Most?
The service appeals to a broad spectrum of local motorists. Parents upgrading to larger vehicles, professionals who need to sell quickly before starting new jobs, and older residents who simply want a straightforward transaction without complications.

It's particularly useful for those who lack confidence in valuing their vehicles accurately. The used car market fluctuates, and without insider knowledge, it's difficult to know whether you're asking too much or selling yourself short.
A Modern Approach
Quick Car Quote represents a shift in how we think about selling vehicles. By combining technology with transparent pricing, it offers Surrey residents a solution that respects both their time and their need for fair value.
For anyone in the surrounding areas considering selling their car, it's worth exploring whether this streamlined approach might suit your circumstances. In an increasingly busy world, services that genuinely simplify life's admin tasks are worth their weight in gold, or in this case, whatever your car happens to be worth.
Further information is available at Quick Car Quote's website, where local residents can obtain an instant valuation and decide whether this modern approach to car selling is right for them.

Race against time in Discworld
by Peter Tucker
The Archway Studio Theatre, located in Horley, Surrey, presents Hogfather, a stage adaptation of Terry Pratchett’s novel of the same name.
This production is directed by Gary Andrews. Performances are at 7:45pm, 18th to 22nd November, as well as at 3:00pm on Saturday 22nd November 2025.
After the sell-out success of its previous Pratchett adaptations, The Archway is mounting, in its Studio Theatre, a stage version of Hogfather, another of his brilliant Discworld novels
The action takes place on the last night of the year, and time is turning. When Death realizes that belief in the Hogfather is dangerously low, he decides to try to maintain people’s belief in him but manages to create only more problems.
Susan, gothic governess and Death’s granddaughter, is attempting to sort everything out.
However, if she doesn’t succeed by morning, there won’t be a morning… ever again.
ABOUT THE DIRECTOR
Gary Andrews joined The Archway Theatre in 1991 and has since then directed well over 40 shows, including this year’s open-air production A Comedy of Errors, as well as acting in countless others.
His favourites are the works of Shakespeare and Dickens but he has also directed very different types of plays, recent examples being Jeeves & Wooster in ‘Perfect Nonsense’ and Terry Pratchett’s Wyrd Sisters.

Honouring Horley’s WW1 ‘Munitionettes’
On Saturday, 15 November 2025, Horley Local History Society unveiled a blue plaque at the front of The Archway Theatre, in The Drive, commemorating Horley’s ‘Munitionettes’.
These were women who acquired this nickname in World War One because, from 1915 to 1918, they made munitions for the British military. Their workplace was located under the arches, next to Horley railway station. Today, Horley’s community theatre, The Archway, occupies this site.
Society member Eamon Byrne had the original idea of hanging this plaque and undertook the vast amount of admin and organisation that were needed to turn the idea into a reality.
The ceremony’s compere was Veronica Ballard MBE. She is a longstanding member of both Horley Local History Society and The Archway. She has a great interest in, as well as knowledge of, the town’s history and is often at the History Desk in Horley Library on Saturday mornings.
In 2016, the late Queen Elizabeth II
awarded Veronica the MBE, in recognition of her services to the local community.
Honorary Alderwoman Dorothy Ross-Tomlin, a former mayor of the Borough of Reigate and Banstead, carried out the unveiling.
As Veronica explained, the Munitionettes’ work was hardly glamorous and was sometimes dangerous: “They worked twelvehour shifts and their skin turned yellow because of the TNT they were handling. So, they were also nicknamed ‘canaries’.”

Honouring Horley’s Mutionettes continued from previous page

Commented Dorothy RossTomlin, “I am very honoured to be commemorating today these very brave women, particularly when one remembers that, in 1915, the government decided they were smart enough to do this work but weren’t smart enough to get the vote.”
Chair of Horley Local History Society, Alan Reid, indicates that this blue plaque unveiling may not be a one-off. “We are researching more possible local commemorative plaques, so please watch this space!” he says.

Recipe of the month
Dear Editor
I thought that readers of the Town Crier might like this simple recipe for a very healthy, high protein breakfast that sets you up nicely for the day.
I personally do fairly heavy physical work and this breakfast is the best I’ve found so far in terms of supplying me with the fuel I need.
First take a ripe avocado, scoop out the soft flesh and mash with a fork adding a teaspoon of lemon juice.
Take two organic eggs plus some grated cheese and grated mushrooms. Put them in a bowl and whisk thoroughly. You can use whatever quantity or type of cheese and mushrooms you want according to your taste.
Melt a small knob of organic butter in a frying pan. A mini frying pan is best in terms of presentation.
Pour in the eggs and gently cook for a few minutes, turning once (best to use a small plate for this, turning the omelette out onto the plate then sliding it back into the pan with the well cooked side uppermost.
Cook for another minute or two then turn out onto your breakfast plate. Then add a dollop of the mashed avocado. Then eat.

Musicians’ Networking Event,
Sunday 16th November
Local musicians packed out The Hive Rooms on Sunday evening for a sold-out networking event hosted by Franklin Music CIC and The Hive Rooms.
The session, led by Dr Nikki Franklin (Franklin Music CIC) and James Beckett (The Hive Rooms), brought together performers, teachers, promoters and venue owners for an evening of conversation, collaboration and live music. The aim was simple: to help musicians meet each other, share ideas and find new opportunities to work together.
Guest speakers brought a wide range of expertise: Dave Oberlé (Gryphon), Mark Adams (Blinding Talent) and Tim Glynne-Jones (New Music Nights) each offered fascinating perspectives from their corners of the music world. Their insights into performance, industry change, artist development, local music culture and the growing role of AI in the music industry sparked thoughtful questions and lively discussion, with conversations continuing long after the formal session ended.
Live music bookended the evening, with a tight, high-energy set from 2 Infinity, followed by a standout performance from Rockpool – a remarkably young trio aged just 13, 14 and 16. Their confidence, musicality and stage presence genuinely impressed the room, with many commenting on their potential and professionalism at such a young age.
Feedback from attendees has been overwhelmingly positive, with many saying it was the first time they had been in a space with so many fellow local musicians and industry professionals. Plans are already underway for future networking events and showcase sessions, continuing the momentum and building a regular platform for connection, collaboration and creativity at The Hive Rooms.

Rising

Awaken sleeping spirit, listen! See yourself for who you are: Your history with starships written Has both won and lost the stars.
You can be the Phoenix rising, Life new-born on joyful wings, New seeds within the heart residing, New waters from more joyful springs.
Let the ships sail out on stormy waters, Sally forth on stellar seas, With your dreams by dread unaltered And with hope embrace the galaxies.
For we have come through eons turning
Like tides upon the shoals of time, Where suns remain like beacons burning
To tantalise the questing mind.
Horley Lions Club
So, sing your song enchanted Weaver
Whose magic staves shall make us cry, For we like lovers live forever, Though flesh be mortal, never die.
Battles rage where love lies sleeping, Dragon ships shall stalk the seas And night with moonlight tresses weeping Shall be the hunters’company.
The cities are but dust all scattered Bleakly down the road of time That we with song and sword have travelled In step with life or strident rhyme.
Oft long and bitter were our striving, Yet love and laughter have we known, Our ships are dreams in hope embarking, Our prow forever pointing home.

Santa will be visiting the streets of Horley starting on the 4th December.
All the streets he will be visiting will be posted up on our website at www.horleylions.org.uk

The community will also be able to see Santa outside the stores of Haskins, Waitrose, Tesco & Collingwood Batchelor. The dates of where he will be are also all on our website.

Horley Community Choir Marks One Year Anniversary

On Wednesday 5 November, Horley Community Choir turned one. Having started a year ago from scratch at St Wilfrid’s Church in Horley Row, the choir now has seventeen regular members including four men.
Horley Community Choir is a daytime, open-to-all, non-auditioning choir. It’s about the joy of singing together, whatever your musical experience. We sing a range of songs of different genres, unaccompanied, in unison and in harmony. Songs are taught through call and response, so you don’t need to read music.
Its leader, Philippa Berry, is part of the Natural Voice Network whose members believe that singing is everyone’s birthright.
So, if you’ve ever thought about singing in a choir, and you’re around during the day on a Wednesday,

please come and join us and give it a try. We’re now starting at the slightly earlier time of 10.15 am to give people a chance to have a longer break and catch up with fellow singers. Sessions cost £5 per person on a pay-as-you-go basis.
For more information, check out the Horley Community Choir page on Facebook.
Or you can contact Philippa at mailto:sing@horleycommunitychoi r.org.uk.

Strictly Speaking – Sarah Hadland: From Surrey to the ‘Strictly’ Dancefloor
With ‘Strictly Come Dancing’currently stepping out on our screens, I interviewed last year’s sensational finalist Sarah Hadland – who starred in ‘Bond’ film ‘Quantum of Solace’ alongside Daniel Craig and Surrey’s own Dame Judi Dench – for the cover of the current issue of Time & Leisure magazine.
Sarah’s starred on small and silver screens alike, playing Stevie in muchloved sitcom ‘Miranda’, set in Surrey. She’s also enjoyed theatre encounters with Tom Cruise and Sir Ian McKellen and made magnificent moves to the ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ final last year alongside her pro partner Vito Coppola, recently wrapping filming season 2 of ‘Daddy Issues’ with David Morrissey and ‘White Lotus’ star Aimee Lou Wood.
“I manifested Aimee getting her part in ‘White Lotus’!” Sarah exclusively revealed to me. “I told her she’d be perfect for the show, and she said, ‘Sarah! I’ve just got an audition for it!’ I said, ‘Right, I am manifesting that to happen; you’re going to get it!’”
From Hollywood and the West End to the Epsom Playhouse, having also starred in ‘Admissions’ with ‘Strictly’ 2025 contestant Alex Kingston, Alex sought Sarah’s advice when asked to participate how and followed in Sarah’s foxtrotting footsteps.

And she raves about her recent postfilming R&R holiday in her ‘Strictly’ partner Vito’s homeland, Italy. “I was more than ready for a super-relaxing pampering break in beautiful natural surroundings, and this place blew me away...”
Sarah stayed at the Valle dell ‘Erica on Sardinia’s Costa Smeralda. “Stunning scenery, INSANE infinity pool, saltwater pools, luxury spa, plus a kids’club to entice my little one… That feeling of space and freedom right by the sea is very special. It truly was paradise!”
