News from Franklin Music Launching Wednesday 14th January 2026!

Franklin Drama Club for Adults We are incredibly happy to have the wonderful Nicki Day working as Creative Director of Franklin Music. Now she is fully settled in, she has been building the new Franklin Drama team, with Claire Clark and James Hall working alongside her. Nicki is leading the development of Franklin Drama, and together the team has created an exciting programme of activities that will begin in January 2026.

We are delighted to announce the launch of the Franklin Drama Club for Adults on Wednesday 14 January 2026, led by Nicki Day. This new initiative opens a welcoming space for adults of all experience levels to explore drama, develop confidence, and reconnect with creativity. Sessions include playful warm-ups, text and character exploration, creative improvisation and supportive group work — all designed to help people develop performance skills in a friendly environment.

Looking Back – What Happened This December Sozanska - Mykhailichenko Duo Recital for Violin & Piano To wrap up the year, we had a special Suppertime Concert on Tuesday, 2nd December. We were very excited to welcome back young Ukrainian pianist Khrystyna Mykhailichenko — performing alongside Yulia Sozanska on violin.

Winter Concert Saturday 6 December, at St John’s Church, Earlswood Our end-of-year Winter Concert brought together local musicians of all ages for a welcoming evening of music-making. The programme featured piano, guitar, double bass and vocal performances from fantastic local musicians, including original songs and contributions from members of Franklin Voices, along with festive spoken-word moments that beautifully capture the season. Therecwere works by Einaudi, Rachmaninov, Tchaikovsky, plus contemporary pieces and festive touches.

Franklin Voices Community Choir Final December rehearsal: 15 December) at St John’s Refectory, Earlswood Franklin Voices continued its seasonal repertoire through December — a friendly, supportive choir open to all, with no auditions and no previous experience required.

The first session was free; then £10 per session or £25/month by Direct Debit.

Tuesday Nights with Franklin Music Musicians Collective & Vocal Collective We had one final blended session before the winter break: on Tuesday 9 December, when we brought together Musicians’ Collective and Vocal Collective for a joint evening of fun collaborative music-making, bringing singers and instrumentalists together for a festive, creative session.

There were pizzas and a supportive atmosphere, so thanks to all who came along and cheered on the excellent performers taking part.

Open Mic Night at The Old Chestnut ran as normal in December, but will wrap up after this month due to clashes with the bar billiards tournaments. However, watch this space — new Tuesday night opportunities are coming soon.

Redhill Rising – Project Launch and School SignUps We are delighted to share that Redhill Rising, our major new community arts project for Years 5–9, is now fully underway — and ten schools have already signed up, including our two participating secondary schools, St Bede’s and Carrington School.

Throughout spring 2026, participating schools will explore Redhill’s hidden histories, railway stories, local legends and community heritage through drama, music and movement. All schools will learn the Redhill Rising song, including Makaton signing, supported by our partners at Include.org.

This creative journey will culminate in a large-scale public performance at The Belfry on 16 April 2026, bringing together hundreds of young people, community performers and local organisations to celebrate the identity, past and future of Redhill.

We are currently welcoming wider community involvement.

Looking Back at November’s Highlights Musician’s Networking Event – Sunday 16 November Local musicians packed out The Hive Rooms for a sold-out networking evening hosted by Franklin Music CIC and The Hive Rooms. Led by Dr Nikki Franklin and James Beckett, the event brought together performers, teachers, promoters and venue owners for an evening of conversation, collaboration and live music.

Guest speakers Dave Oberlé (Gryphon), Mark Adams (Blinding Talent) and Tim Glynne-Jones (New Music Nights) offered insights into performance, industry change, artist development, local music culture and the growing role of AI in the music industry. Their perspectives sparked lively discussion, with conversations continuing long after the formal session ended.

Feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, with many commenting that it was the first time they had been in a room with so many fellow musicians and industry professionals. We are now planning the next networking event for late spring 2026.

Gorilla identifies as human, wins World Heavyweight Crown

by Steve Cook In an earlier issue we reported the success of researchers at Neasden University who taught Dennis the gorilla an extensive vocabulary of hand signs by which he was, remarkably, able to master an everincreasing vocabulary of words.

Dennis, who hails originally from Salisbury Zoo in Wiltshire, progressed steadily from there and soon reached the point where he could hold a conversation with almost anyone, harangue political canvassers, win pub quizzes, falsify his tax returns and so on.

This led him inevitably to identify as a human, adopt the surname Rogers and take up boxing professionally.

The rest, as you are no doubt aware, is history. An unbroken string of 347 first-round victories in the heavyweight division (344 knockouts, 2 dismemberments and one opponent who ran away) brought Dennis inevitably to last night's World Heavyweight Championship fight against reigning champion Vladimir Orlov "The Ogre from Omsk".

Controversial first-round knockout for the Salisbury Simian as the world of boxing successfully avoids offending anyone.

Orlov fought bravely for twentynine seconds and in so doing lasted three seconds longer than any of Dennis ("The Salisbury Simian") Rogers' other opponents, before the latter's raw power and 300-pound weight advantage took its toll.

Thus, Dennis Rogers became the first former gorilla to lift the World Heavyweight Crown and the first Briton to hold the title since Tyson Fury.

At the post-match press conference, Dennis' brother Andy, who has been his trainer and manager since Dennis' trans-species reassignment and can be seen here sparring with him at their private gym in Sidcup, responded to questions about Dennis' remarkable rise to the boxing heights: Speaking through Dennis who acted as his interpreter, Andy said, continued on next page

We interviewed him as he recovers from a broken spine at London's St Thomas' hospital and asked him about the controversy surrounding Dennis' trans-species re-identification. To this, Orlov replied: “If there is one thing I have learned from boxing, it is that it is important not to offend anyone or hurt their feelings. So, if Dennis chooses to identify as a human, who am I to question it? The most important

Golden Fish and Chips – Oh, my Cod! When you walk into Golden Fish and Chips, the first thing you notice is the open and chill ambience. It feels almost like you’re standing by a river listening to fishermen chatting while reeling in their catch, with the hum of people chatting, but with a calm undertone that keeps everything relaxed, remnant of the proper old days Fish and Chip shops, sauces, vinegar, salt etc on the tables and plastic menus. There were plenty of people around enjoying their meals, but it didn’t feel too loud or chaotic. There were plenty of takeaways being ordered whilst we were there too.

The staff team is one of the best parts—many of them have been there for years, and you can tell they enjoy their jobs by how welcoming they are. Whether you’re just grabbing something on your own or coming in with a group of up to 10, they make the experience feel easy and friendly.

It’s the kind of place where you instantly feel like you’ve been going there forever.

The menu at Golden Fish and Chips has everything you’d expect, from traditional cod and chips to burgers, sausages, and all the comforting classics including pickled eggs, gherkins and onions. It’s basically everything a fish and chip shop should be.

They offer discounts for OAP’s at certain times of the week and when talking to the staff they definitely have their regular customers, it’s lovely to see them still part of the Horley community after many years.

When we ordered, the staff told us our food would take 10 to 15 minutes, and it arrived in 14 —right on the dot.

Horley Town Crier Issue 11 December 2025 JJ’s Epic Eats continued from previous page While we waited, they surprised me with a free small portion of chips and a free Coke, which made waiting feel more like snacking time. The open kitchen is really fun to watch too.

You can see the chefs dipping the fish, frying the chips, and working non-stop like a well-oiled machine. It always makes the food taste even better when you can see it being cooked fresh right in front of you.

The curry sauce was warm and had a great flavour without being overpowering and the mushy peas tasted like proper traditional chip shop peas. Only downside was the size of the Gherkin which was quite small.

On a Tuesday night, after a long day, it was the exact kind of comfort food you dream about.

Me and my mum ordered medium cod and medium chips each, although “medium” here honestly felt more like “giant.” The portions were huge!

The chips were chunky, crispy, fluffy inside—basically perfect. The fish was beautifully golden brown, not oily, and had that amazing crunchy coating that cracks when you cut into it. The cod itself was tender and flaky. There were 2 sizes of cod on the menu – Medium and Large, the medium was plenty and hung off the edge of the plate. We also ordered curry sauce and mushy peas, and there was enough of both to feed half the neighbourhood.

Mum said it was a nice break from cooking, and don’t tell her this but… I was extra happy to have a change too.

She’s not exactly the Gordon Ramsay of mums… SSSSSSHHHHHH!!!

Golden Fish and Chips truly lived up to its name—it was the codfather of all fish and chips. If you want the best takeaway-style fish and chips around, this is the place. I’d rate it a solid 8.5 out of 10, which is honestly the best score you can get as a takeaway. It’s delicious, welcoming, filling, and a place you just know you’ll return to again and again. I highly recommend it!

The Horley Repair Café Reaches a Milestone

The Horley Repair Café @ St Wilfs reached a milestone recently when it held its twelfthh session, having started in January.

The Repair Café is held between 11.30am and 2.30pm (last items in by 2pm) on the second Saturday of each month at St Wilfrid’s, Horley Row RH6 8DF. The aim of the Repair Café is to ‘recycle and reuse’ by offering a free repair service to the community, saving items that require a repair going to landfill, saving on raw materials and passing on repair skills.

Owners of broken items can even do the repair themselves with the guidance of the experts if they so wish. Hot drinks and delicious cakes are available whilst owners wait for their items to be repaired.

As such a great community atmosphere develops and the church hall becomes a thriving community space.

All those involved with the Repair Café, whether it be the organisers, the welcome team or those involved with carrying out the repairs are all volunteers, and the Repair Café could not operate without the time that is given up by the volunteers.

Horley Town Crier Issue 11 December 2025 Repair Café continued from previous page this project. More than 450 items have been brought in, of which over 350 have been repaired – these would have almost certainly been thrown away otherwise.

The whole team is extremely talented and enjoy a challenge. Often for those experienced a repair can be quite simple when you know what to look for. A wide range of items have been repaired, such as electric gardening equipment, vacuums, sewing repairs, clocks, bicycles, toys and even a repair to the wheel trim on a car. Unfortunately, due to insurance restrictions we are unable to look at microwaves, e-bikes or petrolpowered machinery.

As the photos show the latest session had a festive feel to it. Volunteers were rewarded with small gifts to thank them for their time and wore Christmas jumpers etc. Even with other events going on in the town it was still a busy session, with, among other items, several sets of Christmas lights being brought in for attention.

by Angela Sara West ‘Tis the season to deck, shop and be jolly, and as my fab photographer Julie’s fantastic cover photo for The Town Crier beautifully illustrates, our homes and Horley high street are currently looking their finest; spruced up, lit up and all set for exciting seasonal festivities.

Our hometown high street was thriving when stalls of goodies, gifts and festive food a-go-go lined the high street earlier this month, with a stand-out stand from Donna and Graham from Just-InFlowers, who both also work in Surrey’s emergency services.

From festive sprouts, pigs in blankets and ‘bah humbug’ baubles, to comedy turkeys, inclusive nutcrackers and gorgeous gonks, this witty pair of heroes have Christmas completely covered when it comes to decs.

Earlier this month, my family and I celebrated not just Christmas but my mum and niece’s joint milestone birthdays!

Burford Bridge Hotel’s beautiful Tithe Barn, at the foot of Box Hill in Dorking near Denbies (where we held the inaugural glitzy Surrey Awards a couple of years ago), has always been a family favourite venue for fine dining, and following a festive 3-course meal, we all danced the night away to top tunes from the 70s, 80s, 90s and beyond. Highly recommend a party night in this stunning Surrey Hills setting.

Dating back centuries, the affordable British heritage brand created fragrances under the reign of Charles I in the 1600s and King George III in the 1770s, with what began as a small business making soaps fragranced with lavender. The Hogfather at the Archway Back here on home turf in Horley, Julie and I discovered “‘Twas the night before Hogswatch and all through the house something was missing…”

We stepped into a world of Halloween-meetsChristmas intrigue at Horley’s Archway Theatre, where we watched yet another outstanding performance from this unique amateur theatre company.

For those not familiar with this fantasy ‘Hogfather’ story, it’s the last night of the year, the time is turning, and if Death’s granddaughter — gothic governess Susan — doesn’t sort things out by the morning, there won’t be a morning… ever again.

When Death discovers belief in the Hogfather is dangerously low, he decides to take on the job himself.

But it’s just not right to find a seven-foot skeleton creeping down your chimney trying to say “ho, ho, ho”… Superstition makes things work in the Discworld and undermining it can have severe consequences. Perfectly timed, staged between Halloween and Christmas – HWXMAS?!! – the talented team of actors and creatives at the Archway Theatre smashed it once again.

The quality of performance throughout was exceptional. Christmas Carols Overlooking Shakespeare’s Globe Opposite William Shakespeare’s historic Globe Theatre on Southbank, meanwhile, lies the Westin London City, overlooking the Thames and the breathtaking world-famous Elizabethan playhouse and cultural landmark.

Julie and I were invited to this stunning hotel’s ‘Once Upon a Christmas’ annual festive party, complete with traditional carol singers, canapés and comforting red and delectable white mulled wine.

A fairytale evening full of festive flavours, finesse and warmth, this delightful event saw the spirit of the season come alive with celebration, sparkling lights and timeless elegance in a revered city riverside setting.

Horley Men’s Shed Connection, conversation and creation.

The Shed concept started in Australia in the late ‘90s to bring guys working on their own in a shed together to share ideas, chat and make friends.

These days good mental health and wellbeing are very important, around 90% of “Shedders” surveyed reported decreased depression, reduced loneliness and better connections.

The Men’s Shed have been very busy with a stall at the Leisure Centre Christmas Fare where we raised £213.

We exhibited a unique tree at the Methodist Church Christmas Tree Festival made from upcycled wood and pallets; they liked it so much it can still be seen in church’s foyer until January. Our eldest member Denis turned 91 years young, and we had a Christmas meal at the Black Horse.

We are open every Tuesday behind the Horley Health Hub, 120 Victoria Road from 9:00am until 15:00pm with two sheds which contain a range of equipment, a large outside area and access to a rest area where we stop for regular breaks and lunch with guys coming and going as they like.

For the coming year we are making some games for Horley Carnival (20th June) and where we will have a stall full of things we have made including bird boxes and feeders, bug towers, hedgehog houses, boot and coat hangers, dog beds, bat boxes, garden planters and our new accessible planter that looks like a manger.

The “Shedders” can be from 18 to 108 years old with a huge range of backgrounds and skill levels, from none to experts but we are a menonly group. We are self-funding through subs (£1 a week if you can afford it) or by selling things we have made. If you are interested just pop-in one Tuesday and meet us.

We can make planters to any size, contact us via our Facebook page or you may occasionally find us at the Smallfield Market. Horley Men’s Shed is one of nearly a thousand Sheds that make up the UK Men’s Shed Association.

Recipe of the month Dear Editor I thought that readers of the Town Crier might like this simple recipe for a very healthy, high protein breakfast that sets you up nicely for the day.

I personally do fairly heavy physical work and this breakfast is the best I’ve found so far in terms of supplying me with the fuel I need.

First take a ripe avocado, scoop out the soft flesh and mash with a fork adding a teaspoon of lemon juice.

Take two organic eggs plus some grated cheese and grated mushrooms. Put them in a bowl and whisk thoroughly. You can use whatever quantity or type of cheese and mushrooms you want according to your taste.

Melt a small knob of organic butter in a frying pan. A mini frying pan is best in terms of presentation.

Pour in the eggs and gently cook for a few minutes, turning once (best to use a small plate for this, turning the omelette out onto the plate then sliding it back into the pan with the well-cooked side uppermost.

Cook for another minute or two then turn out onto your breakfast plate. Then add a dollop of the mashed avocado. Then eat.
