Music at the Anthology is thrilled to be presenting its 28th Annual MATA Festival, INTERVAL: In Between Silence and Stasis in the week leading up to Memorial Day weekend this year at the state of the art, acoustically optimized Cary Hall at The DiMenna Center for Classical Music in New York City – May 21-23. The 4-day festival kicks off with an ambient, downtempo, experimental “rave” curated by Clarinetist and DJ, Eric Umble at Trans Pecos in Brooklyn, where stakeholders in both the nightlife and contemporary classical communities will be brought together for discussion and experience in one room.

15 compositions by 17 composers were selected through a free global Open Call for Submissions and reviewed by four esteemed colleagues and artists to include Leah Asher (Violinist/Violist at The Rhythm Method, Composer and Visual Artist), Theo Espy (Three-time GRAMMY-nominated Violinist, Concert Programmer and Chamber Music Specialist), Lauren Radnofsky (Cellist and founding Co-Artistic/Executive Director of Ensemble Signal) and inti-figgis vizueta (Composer and Educator). Drawing on Morton Feldman’s Centenary, it was not a call for imitation, but for works that reflect Feldman’s musical spirit: purity of expression, quietude and mysticism –“repetition without redundancy ”

Emphasizing listening as an act of discovery, we bring forth music that challenges formal conventions, embraces introspection, explores the ephemeral and the tactile, and cultivates an intimate relationship with sound Utilizing natural resonance, subtle gestures, and the tangible presence of sound in space with emphasis on acoustic instruments, the selected compositions reflect on Feldman’s approaches as points of departure rather than prescription.

Each evening is carefully tailored to represent the Feldman ethos and practice: Experimental Resonance; Positive Void – Evolving Things; Intuitive Music; and Local Music. There will be percussion, toe and tap shoes, strings (violins, viola, cellos and bass), a hardanger d’amore, flutes, clarinets, voice and not just one, but TWO PIANOS my heart is already fluttering with excitement thinking about all that is in store for us!

These are the sounds of legacy, carrying on our mission in continuing to amplify “Tomorrow’s Music Today!”
