Mayor’s Message A big hello to the readers of Wonderful Weymouth magazine! I’m Cllr Ann Weaving and I was elected as Mayor of Weymouth in May. I adore Weymouth and the people who live and work here, so it’s an absolute honour to serve as Mayor. A little bit about me: I was born in Chislehurst in Kent and attended Bromley College and I have been active in politics since I was 16. I went on to be elected as a councillor in Outer London, North West Kent and later served on the Greater London Council for five years. But I decided to move from Woolwich to Weymouth after booking a caravan stay in Preston, about 27 years ago. When I got off the train in Weymouth a feeling came over me and I knew this would become my home. Everyone I met smiled and said good morning, so I just had to move here. My favourite thing about living in Weymouth is the people. It’s not a town, it’s a community. Although I’m retired now, I have ten grand-children and eight great grandchildren who keep me busy, but I’m also involved in the Youth Club at Littlemoor, and the group Big 4 Littlemoor. I’ve been a member of the town council’s Planning and Licensing Committee and I also chair meetings of Full Council, which is a requirement of the Mayor’s role. It’s been a busy start to my Mayoral 6

term. In June, I celebrated the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee with members of the community and attended a beacon lighting ceremony at the Nothe Fort which was then followed by a spectacular firework display over Weymouth bay. I was invited to attend various community events throughout Weymouth over the extended bank holiday weekend and really enjoyed getting the chance to spend time and mark the very special occasion with so many people. We have also just celebrated Armed Forces weekend in Weymouth, which is always a busy weekend in the town. The event couldn’t happen in 2020 due to the pandemic and was scaled back in 2021 due to restrictions at the time, so it was really special to be able to put on the full event for the first time in three years. The parade along the seafront was particularly special and was fantastic to watch and be a part of. It will be a busy year ahead, and I cannot wait to meet and get to know lots more people in the community and attend a diverse range of community and civic events. See you soon!. Celebrating 20 years of world-class classical music in Weymouth Weymouth Lunchtime Chamber Concerts 2022 is a significant year for Weymouth Lunchtime Chamber Concerts. Not only are we celebrating the return of live music performance after the disruption of the pandemic with a full season of concerts, but also a significant anniversary as this popular series celebrates its 20th birthday this year. Founded by concert pianist and long-time Weymouth resident Duncan Honeybourne, Weymouth Lunchtime Chamber Concerts (WLCC) was launched at the Weymouth Arts Centre in the summer of 2002. Familiar with the concept of regular lunchtime concerts from his own professional touring, Duncan longed to bring regular high quality lunchtime concerts to his own corner of Dorset. He was also keen to establish a platform for chamber music partnerships with friends, to invite friends and colleagues to explore the area, to promote young artists and to try out his own solo programmes. He wanted to build up a loyal audience willing to trust his artistic judgement and give unusual repertoire a hearing as part of a regular series. Since its foundation, the series has gone from strength to strength. With regular concerts (once a month on a Wednesday lunchtime) in the lovely setting of St Mary’s Church in the heart of Weymouth, and a loyal, enthusiastic audience, the series proves that classical music does not need to be snobby or elitist. Duncan says: “I wanted to create a cosy, welcoming and all-embracing atmosphere, and always to present the music in such a way as everyone felt comfortable, involved and valued. The artists almost always talk to the audience, telling them their own feelings about the works. I’ve always been passionate that you don’t have to have any kind of background in music to get something out of it”. Record audience

attendance this season proves this point very clearly as concerts are regularly sold out, often several weeks in advance. Ticket prices are also kept deliberately low too and concert-goers can enjoy a pre-concert lunch at the church. The whole atmosphere is friendly and welcoming. The series regularly presents internationallyrenowned musicians, including this season pianists Margaret Fingerhut, Penelope Roskell, Allan Schiller and John Humphreys, cellist Joseph Spooner, and violinist Peter Fisher, as well as classical stars of the future who are just embarking on a professional career. Many artists perform in Weymouth before going on to play similar programmes at London’s Wigmore Hall and other prestigious classical music venues. “Weymouth Lunchtime Chamber Concerts provide the whole musical package. Their programme includes established artists and emerging talent; and the conditions are superb for audience and performer alike. Weymouth is truly fortunate to have a concert series that benefits both local people and the wider musical community…..this is a valuable initiative that deserves continuing support and celebration.” – James Lisney, concert pianist who performed in Weymouth in July 2021 To celebrate this special birthday, Duncan Honeybourne will give the final concert of this season on Wednesday 20th July, in a programme which will include some favourites and a few surprises too.

An agent for change Why preservation of both people, and the planet, is the next venture for Amal Clooney. Amal Clooney is best known for human, not environmental, advocacy; yet it was at the Greenbuild 2018 Conference that we saw, for the ﬁrst time, a new side to the human rights lawyer. It was one that followed the conference’s mantra that we can only solve society’s ills by proper intersection of humanity and the wider environment.

While Amal Clooney beneﬁts from inherent beauty, wealth and celebrity status, what makes her so engaging is something separate that cannot be learned or taught – it is an ability to light up the room; she is someone who appears capable of speaking to anyone at any level. “I think a part of us needs to relearn the art of conversation and compassion. The Humble Bumblebee (and friends) Why we all need to make a beeline to our buzzing friends, who are pivotal to the future of our planet. The bee population (bumblebees and the 25,000 other recorded species that exist), have been too regularly dismissed in the past as simply the overseers of pollination… and of course useful if you want to spread a bit of honey on your toast. Yet the reliance both we and the wider environment have on bees moves them straight to the upper echelons of some of the planet’s most valuable entities. Consider that at least 30% of the world’s crops and 90% of all plants require crosspollination to spread and thrive, and suddenly our perception of bees takes a different slant. Unfortunately, bee populations around the world are in decline. Climate change causes some ﬂowers to bloom earlier or

later than usual, meaning bees have fewer food sources at the start of the season. They suffer habitat loss from development and a lack of bee-friendly ﬂowers, and some colonies collapse due to plants and seeds treated with pesticides. The good news is that protecting these little wonders is not just good for the environment, but a joy in itself. Several organisations run bee initiatives; from Bee Walks, in which volunteers traverse set routes to map out observations of bee activity; to community and education groups at libraries, stalls and fetes that raise money and awareness. You can also create a buzz in your own back garden, by laying a foundation to encourage bees into the space, where what’s around them will thrive: Bee-friendly plants Use bee-friendly plants, patio pots, herbs in a planter, with hanging baskets and crocuses creating colour and helping bees ﬂourish.

Gracious greens Consider adding fruit and veg to your garden, where possible; bees will be instantly attracted. An annual affair Try to keep planting throughout the season in order to provide food and shelter for bees. They actually require nectar and pollen across all four seasons, while keeping the grass long offers great refuge. Arrest the pesticides Obviously, removing or greatly reducing the use of pesticides in your garden will have a hugely beneficial effect on the bee population, so don’t be afraid to throw away that ‘bug gun’ and let nature do its bit. New arrivals Also consider welcoming in ‘beneficial insects’ such as hoverflies, beetles and ladybirds, as these perfect partners will all help your bees flourish. Why not start a buzz in your community, and help nature in the process!

Money on my mind... the Martin Lewis column He’s the UK’s leading money saving expert - a journalist and presenter who has kept millions of pounds in people’s pockets as well as lifting the lid on the threats and dangers we need to be aware of as consumers. In this month’s column, Martin Lewis looks at keeping our money safe online. Staying one step ahead of the fraudsters isn’t a battle just reserved for those who patrol the internet. The unregulated nature of the world’s biggest information source means we need to take control of our own vigilance. The good news is that by following a few easy steps, you can protect yourself from the dark forces at work across the web. Firstly, when visiting a site, in the web address at the top, look for an ‘s’ after ‘http’ at the beginning of the line. The lack of an ‘s’ doesn’t directly imply you are on a scam website, but it is telling you that the

security certiﬁcate is inadequate, and you should refrain from entering personal information. Some browsers – Google Chrome being one – add a padlock icon denoting any website that is fully secure, or the web address could be shown in green. The highest form of encryption for any site will show the website name before the address, also. Mostly, ask yourself if what’s being offered is realistic. On the internet, just as in real life, if something you see online appears too good to be true – particularly if you’ve clicked on an advert or had a popup appear on your screen – it probably is. Also have a look for how well written and presented the site is. There is a very real correlation between the

trustworthiness of a site and the attention paid to spelling, punctuation and grammar. It may not surprise you to hear that few scammers are fully adept in the ﬁner workings of the English language, particularly if that site is being run many thousands of miles from the UK, and authentic marketing will almost always look professional in style and content. Furthermore, as much as Google may at times frustrate us by offering a multitude of options that are almost bewildering in number, it remains a great source for checking what we know. So if a site looks suspicious put its name into Google. If it’s a known rogue business then there’s a good chance it’s being discussed across the web. Finally, if you are purchasing online, use a credit card or trackback ﬁnancial tool, such as PayPal. That way if something does go awry, you have the security of reclaiming your money.

Dorset Sunflower Trail is back for another year... Maiden Castle Farm is running a major fundraising event for the second year running supporting two important charities.

The farm will create a spectacular sunflower trail which will raise funds for the DCH Kingfisher Ward and Cherkasy Hospital in Ukraine. Half the profits generated by the trail will be donated by the farm, to be shared equally between these two chosen charities. This year organiser Hazel Hoskin is working closely with Dorchester Town Council on a range of additional events and activities in Dorchester, all based around the theme of sunflowers. Visitors will be encouraged to visit Dorchester town centre from mid July to see spectacular sunflower sculptures suspended across South Street. There will also be sunflower themed shop windows across the town as local retailers join in with the activities. Dorchester’s beautiful Borough Gardens will be a popular venue as it showcases a range of sunflower varieties which have been specially grown to highlight the beauty of these amazing flowers. The main event will happen in August at Maiden Castle Farm itself, when the sunflower crop is fully grown and in all its glory. The sunflower trail created on the farm will be a highlight for many people, especially the many thousands who visited the attraction last summer. The Main Trail will take an estimated 40 minutes but there will also be a shorter trail for any visitors with accessibility requirements. The attraction will include a photograph competition, opportunities for sundowner sessions, Pilates in the sunflowers and more to be announced. To boost the green credentials of the event, visitors will be encouraged to follow a special scenic path all the way from Dorchester’s town centre to the heart of the trail – a distance of about 1.5 miles. All this in the farm’s amazing location nestled at the foot of the historic Maiden Castle – the largest prehistoric hill fort in England. You are invited to bring a picnic and enjoy dining next

to one of the largest and most complex Iron Age Hillforts in Europe. Following your visit to the Trail, access to the Maiden Castle Hillfort (which is maintained by English Heritage) is free and further exploration is suggested for a different viewpoint of the Sunflowers and panoramic views of the Dorset Countryside. Hazel Hoskin said: “It was a fantastic seeing the thousands of people who visited the farm last year to experience the sunflowers. We heard about many examples of people making special memories there and with their support we raised a lot of money for the special care unit at DCH. With all the sunflowers in the town centre we think this year will be even better and we hope that even more people will come along and join in the excitement.” Hazel is also working with some local Schools to get families across the town growing sunflowers in their own gardens. They will use seeds collected from the sunflowers grown on Maiden Castle Farm last year. #sunflowersuperhighway Dorchester Town Council are funding the town centre sunflower sculptures and organising the sunflower shop window display competition. They are looking forward to all the colour and spectacle this will bring to the town this summer, providing even more for visitors to experience and enjoy. A member of Dorchester Town Council said, “It is brilliant to be able to work with Maiden Castle Farm and shops across the town to create such a great attraction and raise money for local and Ukrainian causes. We have all been devastated to see the events unfolding in Ukraine and the sunflower is the Ukrainian National flower too. All of these sunflowers are going to be so beneficial for local bees and biodiversity too.” Tickets will go on Sale in July 2022. A Design for Life… The Kevin McCloud Column Designer, writer and television presenter, Kevin McCloud leapt into our consciousness with his vastly successful Grand Designs show on Channel 4. This month, the affable architectural business owner talks about the difference between decorative and functional. The other day I found myself having a conversation about clocks, and it dawned on me how our reliance on them in the home has changed so much over the years. The reason for this is obvious – we have watches, phones, laptops, and various other timing devices scattered about our personal space. The era of having to get up and walk into another room to discover we’re late for the train, is long gone. There feels some justice in that, too. After all, the humble wall clock was, for many years, viliﬁed in its role in reminding us that we were behind schedule. It must be relieved to know that now, in 2022, it serves a new purpose – it is an aesthetic choice; it is a timeless interior addition that alludes to a tradition of sophistication and style - content, simply, to sit smugly in the background of household life, faithfully ticking

away the seconds ad inﬁnitum.

Its riling raison d’être aside, there was a time when large clocks were considered emblems of opulence; and although the clamour for small and sleeker accessories has relegated the wall clock to an afterthought, there’s a case for arguing this timeless timepiece can add an eye-catching allure to any contemporary space. The clock is, in many ways, a piece of moving, evolving art. It can exaggerate, calm or simply just sympathise with a wall. It can bring out colours and connect furniture, items and artwork in genre or era or style. Even if you’re hoping to emulate uber-minimalist interiors, an elegant or oversized wall clock can offer a break from potential

monotony while still appearing a natural extension of its surroundings and theme. Designers now treat these creations as art pieces – ditching the rounded constraints or traditional elements to drag the timing device into the present. Whichever way you look at it, wall clocks belong in a different era, though that tangible link between functional and decorative is one that we should consider across a number of objects and a number of rooms in our homes. The truth is, a good home, or house, or space, should combine the two. We need things around us that add to the feeling of being provided for us, yet at the same time we want to enjoy that elegance and beautiﬁcation. The secret to any space is ﬁnding the correct ratio between the two, and that sometimes can be easier said than done. Good luck!

Team 13: Olympic runners raise money for Julias House! Double Olympian marathon runner and Commonwealth Games medallist Liz Yelling has provided her support to ‘Team 13’ – a fundraising challenge initiated by Julia’s House Corporate Fundraiser, Caroline Attreed to celebrate her thirteenth year at the Dorset and Wiltshire children’s hospice charity. Caroline has assembled a team of 13 top business leaders who will run 13 miles together in a bid to raise an incredible £13,000 to help local families with seriously ill children. Alongside Caroline, those taking part include James Benamor (CEO, Richmond Group & Julia’s House Ambassador), Alex Bonnet (CEO, Venaspace), Becky Harris (Finance Director, MSO Capital Ltd), Brian Parker (CEO, Britannia Parking & Julia’s House Chair), Chris Fairfax (CEO, Catalyst Property Finance), Doug Sheppard (MD, Parvalux), Iain Williams (CEO, Quick Car Finance), Kelly Black (Director, Richmond Group), Mark Nixon (Partner, Threthowans & Julia’s House Trustee), Martin McAndrew (Director, Blue Thirst), Pip Woods (MD, Rockley Watersports & Julia’s House Ambassador), Tobias Britton (MD, Globacare), Staz Stazicker (Co-Founder, Thru Dark Ltd) and Michelle Cross (PR Manager, OnBuy). Liz is such an inspirational athlete and has competed in two Olympic marathons. She was really motivational and gave us some great tips and techniques to take away and put into practice.” Liz put the fundraisers through their paces with some interval training in Poole Park, and left them with a few words of encouragement and advice: “The best thing about going into an event with a team is the support, encouragement and accountability you offer each other, I think this is so motivational, and helps you to get out on those runs, when otherwise you may not. It helps you to feel excited about race day and feeling a part of something. The Alan Titchmarsh Column He’s a brilliant presenter, accomplished gardener, talented novelist, and all-round horticultural inspiration. This month, Alan Titchmarsh talks about the pests that parade our petunias… and more. We all want our outdoor spaces to be as beautiful and as thriving as possible, yet by employing a host of natural ways to put pests off, we can keep our courtyards canny, and our green spaces chemical-free. The best way to do this is to think about natural barriers. These, if done well, can comfortably eradicate snails and slugs and all those little creatures who slide and slime over our prized plants. Any type of copper can be used to make a wall that electrically shocks their body, deterring them from moving further forward, while wood ashes or crushed eggshells also work to put those meddling molluscs off their lunch. While most people consider sprays and pesticides as the best way to keep unwanted intruders away, there are a range of natural squirts that do the same thing. For instance,

garlic and chilli may be a culinary staple, but they hold a secret power for gardeners looking to dispose of invaders in a natural manner. Combine crushed garlic and chilli (powdered chilli will do if you don’t have fresh) with one tablespoon of vegetable oil and a small amount of dishwashing liquid or soap flakes. Leave to soak overnight in a jar, then strain and spray on plants. The spray is very effective towards aphids and caterpillars – but keep away from kids, avoid contact with your skin and eyes, and use within a fortnight! It’s also worth reminding ourselves that not all bugs and beasties are bad news, and done well, you can encourage some into your garden. Plant mint, fennel, dill, yarrow, sunflowers and dandelions will attract ladybirds, hoverflies and lacewings, all of which will happily feast on your aphids. Birds and hedgehogs eat slugs and snails, beetles and insects… as do frogs and toads. Finally, try a trap. Earwigs can devastate seedlings, so if they do pose a problem in your garden, try filling a few plastic flowerpots with straw and balancing them upside down on sticks to attract the pests.

The earwigs crawl up the poles and take shelter in the pots at night and you can humanely dispose by emptying them in the morning. Removing pests and critters the natural way takes effort, imagination and no small amount of patience, but opening your garden to nature’s bounty, whilst preserving as much life as possible, is surely the best and most satisfying way to enjoy the fruits of your labour.

Ingredients (serves 4) For the cake • 50g beurre noisette, plus a couple of extra tablespoons for the mould (see cook’s tip) • 1 large Waitrose British Blacktail Free Range Egg • 30g golden syrup • 60g plain ﬂour • 30g icing sugar, sifted • 10g caster sugar • 1 pinch of salt • 3g caraway seeds, toasted • 4g baking powder • 15ml whole milk

People assume that because my recipes are complex and rich in detail, they are impossible to replicate, but the truth about food is you can invest as much or as little as you like in the process, and even my recipes are based on simple concepts, so never feel afraid to try something different.

Method

Cook’s Tip To make the beurre noisette, melt unsalted butter over a gentle heat, whisking continuously until the solids turn golden brown and smell nutty. Remove from the heat, strain the butter through a coffee ﬁlter and store in the fridge. 1. To make the bath cakes, preheat the oven to 190˚C, gas mark 5. Brush the inside of a 9-hole madeleine mould with some of the beurre noisette and set aside. 2. In the meantime, using a stand-up mixer ﬁtted with a

paddle attachment on medium speed, beat the egg and the golden syrup until thick and light in colour. Reduce the speed and sprinkle in the ﬂour, both sugars, salt, caraway seeds and baking powder, continue to mix until well combined. Slowly drizzle in the cool beurre noisette and the milk. 3. Pour the batter into the prepared madeleine moulds halfway up and place in the oven for approximately 10 minutes. Remove the tray from the oven and cool on a cooling rack.

For the chocolate crumb • 150g caster sugar • 70g white chocolate To finish • 100g Heston from Waitrose Chocolate Sauce 4. For the chocolate crumb, add the sugar and 75g water to a large pan, place over a medium high heat and allow the syrup to come up to 150˚C. 5. Now remove from the heat and add the white chocolate and continue to whisk. The chocolate will become foamy at first but keep whisking until it crystallizes. Pour the crystallized chocolate onto a tray lined with parchment and allow to cool completely, crushing any clumps once cool. 6. To finish, melt the chocolate sauce according to pack instructions, allowing it to cool slightly. Using a spatula, cover half of the Bath cakes with a layer of the chocolate sauce. Sprinkle some of the chocolate crumb on top. Chill until ready to serve.
