We are new to the area but have been producing local community magazines in Dorset and Hampshire for the last 16 years. We moved here to be by the sea, which has always been a dream of mine. I have not been disappointed and adore our new sea-view here on the Esplanade. It is true that I behave like a tourist! Fortunately, I like to think I have a sense of humour and can laugh at myself for this. I love the atmosphere, the character, the diversity and the sense of community that Weymouth has. Message from our Mayor May I take this opportunity to wish everyone in Weymouth a Happy New Year! 2021 was another challenging year for everybody so the new year is always a good time to be looking ahead, which always ﬁlls me with a deep sense of optimism. And there is plenty to look forward to in wonderful Weymouth in 2022. Young people will soon be able to take advantage of Weymouth Town Council’s new skatepark and parkour facility due to be built at The Marsh. It will provide a community space with a welcoming and inclusive atmosphere, encouraging all ages and abilities to get active on their skateboards, bikes and scooters. There will also be many new opportunities for younger and older residents to explore Radipole Park and Gardens, with major enhancement works being carried out including a new café and sports and play facilities. We’re thrilled to have chosen the charity the Friends of MV Freedom to have their logo recreated in the beautiful carpet beds at Greenhill Gardens later this year. The charity provide access to the sea for people living with disability and received a Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service after 37 years of operations in Weymouth.

We’ll continue with our work to make Weymouth a cleaner and greener place to live, work and visit. By involving residents, businesses, and partner organisations in the conversation, we hope to get more people proactively addressing the climate emergency. And one practical thing we can all do to help play our part is to stamp out the use of single use plastics. Later in the year we’ll encourage communities to come together to help celebrate some considerable milestones, with outdoor activities held across the town for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. From lighting a beacon, to plans for a community sports festival, cultural and arts events, there will be something for everybody to enjoy. And 2022 marks 10 years since the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, which showcased Weymouth in the sailing events. We are busy working up options to commemorate this fantastic event. Talking about Wildlife...

The secret world of the robin The much-loved robin is one of the UK’s favourite garden visitors. Adorning Christmas cards at this time of year, the robin is a truly iconic species, often associated with winter.

Perhaps the best thing about the robin is that it’s easily identified; brown with a white belly and the famous red breast make it unmistakable, even for the wildlife novice. Often seen using gardens and local green spaces, they make their presence known with a loud, territorial song that they sing all year round, so they’re hard to miss. Whilst they can be found in the most unusual places such as plant pots, old wellies and shelves, shrubs and particularly ivy (another festive favourite!) are their favoured place for nesting. Fiercely territorial birds, during the breeding season (April to June) the female is allowed into the male’s territory where she sets up a nest of dead leaves, moss and hair. Like any other garden visitor, robins need a helping hand during the winter as they can be adversely affected by cold snaps. Robins are small, and smaller birds can often suffer the most in colder conditions. Often if a robin visits your garden just once, they are known to return time and time again. Finding food is a constant occupation for them, and whilst Ivy provides rich delicious berries, robins will appreciate any offerings you have for them in your 8

garden as the winter draws in. They are ground feeders, so try to provide food for them on a table as they will struggle to use hanging feeders. By encouraging robins (or other birds) into your garden, you will be rewarded with a display of red plumage and beautiful bird song. Increasing numbers of homeowners are choosing to hold their properties as tenants in common to reduce inheritance tax and help protect their share from care fees The Property Protection Trust Will package is based around how you hold the ownership of your home. All good estate planning nowadays considers the difference between owning your home as joint tenants or as tenants in common. If you own your home as Joint Tenants; when one of you dies the ownership of the home passes by the Law of Survivorship and not by your Will. Therefore, the surviving partner will automatically own 100% of the property. This sounds right to most people. BUT should the surviving partner need care in the future, the Local Authority can take everything they own (including their home) to pay for the care fees, leaving just £14,250 to be inherited by children and grandchildren.

There is an alternative.

Nowadays many couples choose to own their home as Tenants in Common where each partner will own 50% of the family home. This provides for many benefits. Firstly, it allows you to legally leave your share of the property in your Will to whoever you wish. A properly written Will can ensure that your half of your house will eventually pass to your children even if your widow re-marries. Unmarried cohabiting couples or relatives living together can also use this means of ownership as a way of minimising their Inheritance Tax exposure. It can also help with long-term care costs. If one of you is still living in your home the Local Authority can’t include its value in the means test if one of you has to go in to long-term care. This also applies if the husband or wife still living at home dies while the other is in care as their share will go into the trust.

Chesil Rocks 2022 - Plea for volunteers Chesil Rocks has been an annual music and arts festival since 2012, with all proceeds going to Samaritans of Dorset. Since the ﬁrst Chesil Rocks in 2012, more than £68,000 has been raised for the charity, equating to about 25% of their annual budget in each year and making this local event their largest source of income. With no government funding, our Samaritans (who are all volunteers), need to spend much of their time on fundraising activities and our contribution allows them to focus more on what they do best.

WEYMOUTH HARBOUR

SANTA SWIM 2021!

Every year thousands of people line the harbour at Weymouth to witness this annual Lions event which has become a landmark event for the town. For those brave enough to suffer a Christmas morning dip, the 70-metreplus distance started from the Cove on Trinity Road and finished across the water opposite the Harbour Master’s office on Custom House Quay. Swimmers were split into up to 15 groups of 30, with some swimmers racing across the distance in just a few minutes. Sea canoeists from the RNLI were on the water and were able to assist swimmers who got into difficulty. Help was also on hand from MV Freedom, a local charity that enables disabled people to enjoy boat trips around the outer harbour and Portland. On Christmas Day it helped the Lions by providing a ferry service across the harbour.

Some were there just to have fun, others were simply up for a challenge, but others were also raising much needed funds for the Weymouth & Portland Lions Club, to assist them in helping those in need in the community. Formed in 1969 under the Lions International motto ‘We Serve’, the group has currently around 18 members. Most of the money raised by the Club is spent locally, although the club does, in line with all Lions Clubs, contribute to the Lions International Fund, which helps to support humanitarian projects throughout the world. A Design for Life… The Kevin McCloud Column Designer, writer and television presenter, Kevin McCloud leapt into our consciousness with his vastly successful Grand Designs show on Channel 4. This month, the affable architectural business owner looks ahead to some design trends that might rise to prominence over the next few years. I get asked a lot about future design trends and initiatives, and the truth is I wouldn’t know what a trend was if it hit me in the face! Over the years I’ve come to regard trends as very lucid, irregular things – they come about quickly, are mixed and remixed, then disappear out of nowhere; and with interior design that can be problematic given the semipermanency of how we furnish our homes. It’s not like saying ‘this pair of trousers are out of fashion this year; I’ll wear a different pair tomorrow’. If you’ve added wood panelling to every wall in your home, it’s going to take a while to ﬁx. What I will say is what happens at the beginning of every century in design and

architecture is that people stop and look back at the last century and say, ‘oh my God, we didn’t get any of that, quick, let’s have some’, and you get this rush of building and design and furniture which is kind of retro – we’ve seen it over the past decade or so with a complete craze for anything vintage from 1930-90s. It’s fair to say we’re always looking forward as far as home design goes, both

architecturally and in the patterns and designs within. If I had to put money on a style or theme over the next couple of decades, it would be eco-based. We’re seeing a real retune to very natural, sustainable materials - basic stuff. Yet also, thanks to changes in technology and the way that

we design, often using iPhones, we can survey and model things really cheaply now. So that means we are going to see all manner of goods – from home products right through to personal stuff like shoes – made not in some factory in Germany, China or Portugal, but in a shop round the corner from where you live using really sophisticated 3D printing techniques. Certainly, a look into the future is a view back towards bespoking our homes in our own design. The era of the IKEA mass-market products has helped us a lot, but technology is now freeing us to style our homes in much more personal ways. It will mean we can turn back into being a nation who make things for ourselves, in a bespoke way, which I think is a very exciting future.

Greenfingers… The Alan Titchmarsh Column He’s a brilliant presenter, accomplished gardener, talented novelist and all-round horticultural inspiration; and this month, as autumn works its way into our outdoor spaces, Alan Titchmarsh explains why variety is the spice of life, even in the garden! With the approach of autumn, at the moment we’re going through that phase where the colours and the shapes are changing. There’s sometimes a sadness when you realise summer is coming to an end, and the leaves certainly seem to be falling earlier this year. My advice though is to embrace the new season and really go after all the potential and possibilities that it holds. After all, we’re actually very lucky in Britain – where plants are concerned we can afford ourselves a different favourite every month; snowdrops in January, daffodils in February, tulips in March and so on. People tend to associate autumn with brown and orange tones, and a rustling underfoot; but it’s about much more than

that. One of the most exciting times is when you wake up on a certain day and you can just smell the fact the season has arrived. It’s something in the air - a kind of sourness, a tang that lingers. You can smell things just beginning to decay, but it’s in a way that is replenishing, stimulating and invigorating because it means things are turning and new possibilities are around the corner.

look at the lovely ferns it’s now growing. Next, perhaps start autumn with a tidy-up of borders, or a clean out of the greenhouse, or perhaps even renew a few tools. Also consider getting your compost boosted with all those leaves suddenly in abundance. And ﬁnally, invest in some evergreens to offer texture and volume in areas of the garden that might start looking a little sparser. Mostly though, look forward to the coming change and admire nature’s versatility. There is tremendous colour still around us, and where the leaves have descended, look at the skeletal, artistic majesty of trees.

So as autumn arrives I would offer the following bits of advice. Firstly, hold on to the last bits of colour and savour them. Next, enjoy what’s there - perhaps you have some raspberries or any number of the late-ﬂowering varieties such as Cyclamens, Begonias, and of course, Crocuses. Also see how your garden is evolving – sure, that asparagus bed is no longer cropping, but

Yet there is more to it than that where our gardens are concerned - I like looking forward in life and I thrive on anticipation because, of course, when it does happen, it’s that much more enjoyable.

Mary Berry’s Raspberry And Apple Muffins Method

Introduction We are lucky to live in a consumer and retail world where fruit and vegetables of every description are available to us all year round, no matter what season we are in. That means the old rules about using summer fruits in summer months have changed somewhat; so to celebrate this I’d like to bring out a traditionally seasonal recipe – raspberry and apple muffins – in these wintry times where we would, in the past, have had rather flatter, more rustic flavours. This bake is easy to do, really delicious, and is certain to put a smile on the faces of old and young alike.

Top Tip • In order to make a light mixture, stir the wet ingredients into the dry ones quickly, gently, and brieﬂy. Stop stirring as soon as they are combined. The mixture should feel light and soft. Don’t over-mix, as this will result in a tough consistency.

1. Preheat the oven to 200°C (180°C fan / gas mark 6). Line each hollow of the muffin tin with a paper muffin case. Warm the butter in a small pan over a low heat until it melts, then set aside to cool. 2. Tip the flour, baking powder, ground almonds, cinnamon and sugar into a large bowl and stir to combine. In a medium bowl, beat the eggs and stir in the yogurt, milk and cooled melted butter. Stir this mixture into the flour mixture, then add the raspberries and apple and stir briefly. 3. Spoon the mixture into the muffin cases. Bake for about 25 minutes or until well risen and firm to the touch. 4. Meanwhile, make the glaze: warm the sugar and orange juice in a small pan over a low heat, just until the sugar has dissolved, then increase the heat and let the mixture bubble for about 30secs so it turns a bit syrupy – not too long, or it will get too sticky. 5. Remove the muffins from the

Ingredients • 85g (3oz) butter • 250g (9oz) self-raising ﬂour • 1 tsp baking powder • 45g (1½ oz) ground almonds • 1½ tsp ground cinnamon • 115g (4oz) caster sugar • 2 large eggs • 250g (9oz) plain, full-fat yogurt • 1 tbsp full-fat or semiskimmed milk • 175g (6oz) fresh raspberries • 1 eating apple, such as Cox’s, about 150g (5½ oz), peeled and chopped into 1cm (½ in) pieces For the glaze • 2 tbsp caster sugar • 1 tbsp orange juice oven. Leave them in their tin for 1-2mins, then transfer them to a wire rack. While they are still warm, brush the top of each mufﬁn with the glaze. Leave to cool.

As you can be walking on average three miles while playing, regular games or practice can help protect your heart from cardiovascular disease. • Improves cognitive health - Research is fairly conclusive that physical activity boosts brain health. Bowls requires co-ordination, mental agility and strategy. Refining your tactics, concentrating for long periods of time and maintaining mental alertness not only help you retain a good level of motor skills, they help with brain health too. • Improves mood, social relationships and enjoyment - Bowls is a community sport. It is a pastime where like-minded people come together to enjoy competition, camaraderie and some good physical activity. Many Bowls clubs put on social events and there are opportunities for volunteering which is also proven to help your sense of wellbeing.
