Brendoncare Clubs receive a grant from The Rank Foundation
Brendoncare Clubs, run by Winchester based charity, The Brendoncare Foundation, is delighted to announce that they have received a grant of £14,545 from The Rank Foundation. The grant will be used towards staff costs for the ongoing community support service and rental costs of the Club Hampshire Centre in Gosport. This generous grant has been awarded from The Rank Foundation Covid-19 Recovery Fund and is in addition to a grant of £10,000 received from The Rank Foundation Resilience Fund in 2020. The grant last year benefited Brendoncare Clubs across Hampshire and Dorset in helping with the running costs of the community support service, digital connection and virtual clubs. Brendoncare Clubs have been temporarily closed since March 2020 and with many members living alone, Brendoncare has been helping to maintain the positive connections and friendships they enjoy through their regular clubs. There have been over 13,000 contacts made to members and volunteers as part of the community support service, 238 virtual club meetings and 59 digital connection sessions.

They offer a friendly, fun, relaxed and supportive environment where older people can meet other club members, make friends and develop strong peer support networks.

With a shakier start to the year than many could wish, Hampshire still remains one of the most beautiful and historic counties in all of Britain. From a racecourse with an interesting heritage to a story of survival in the face of pestilence, here are five more fascinating facts from around the county.
Did you know that Tweseldown Racecourse was purchased by the British Army in 1854 during the Crimean War for use as a training ground? The Hampshire racecourse has a heritage of interesting events, including several royal visits from non other than Queen Victoria herself when she oversaw a display consisting of more than fifteen thousand troops. Several years later in 1867, Tweseldown would become an official racecourse and would later go on to host olympic events in 1948 among many other prestigious occasions. Amazingly, the Hampshire Beekeepers Association has been in existence for nearly one hundred and forty years. The Association has witnessed many changes and events, including the Isle of Wight bee disease which devastated many numbers in the area in 1904 and was said to have been the reason behind the near decimation of the British Black Bee. This disease in the bees badly affected the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Beekeepers Association and destroyed countless hives for nearly two decades. Excellently though, in the coming years, there was greater understanding of the disease and the numbers of bees and their keepers continued to grow to the thriving society it is today. 6

Did you know... The Hampshire Bat Group has reported sightings of seventeen of the eighteen species of the UK’s bat breeds? Amazingly, the Bat Group has also spotted two of some of the most rare bat breeds in the UK which can even prove elusive throughout the rest of Europe. These two rare breeds, the barbastelle and Bechstein bat have been seen in the New Forest and ongoing work is being done by the society to research and encourage more numbers in the county.

In the 1960s the coastal village of Calshot welcomed guests from the world’s most remote island Tristan da Cunha in the Atlantic Ocean after a volcanic explosion forced the island’s inhabitants to seek shelter elsewhere. Although there were some social issues, causing many to return, a housing estate was built and many residents chose to stay in the Hampshire village. In memory of the kindness of the Hampshire people however, those who did return then renamed the island’s harbour after the village of Calshot!

Hampshire has often beckoned the creative talents of writers and artists and one such author was Sir Arthur Conan Doyle who stayed in Emery Down for about a year to research his book, The White Company. The Sherlock Holmes author often wished to test his talents for literature in stories away from his famous detective and placed greater value on his other titles. During his stay in Hampshire, he would often be seen socialising in the village and most particularly enjoying one of the area’s many picturesque walks.

Apps, SSD’s & speeding up Wi-Fi at home I am always surprised when I talk to someone who does not have the NHS Covid-19 app installed on their phone. It is extremely useful and how it works is well explained when you open the app. In simple terms it advises you not to be in contact with anyone for more than 5 minutes and to try and stay 2 metres away. I have found that I am more conscious of those time and distance parameters since I have been using it. Another app that I have been using for a little while is called DreamLab. This uses your phone at night, only when it is charging and, it is then is employed as a volunteer computing app for the Imperial College London and is supported by the Vodafone Foundation. Providing Care During the Toughest of Times At the time of writing (the second week of January), our community is ever more stricken by the eff ects of coronavirus (COVID-19). We are now in Lockdown 3 and the politicians are threatening further tightening of restrictions but, more positively, growing numbers are receiving their fi rst and, in some cases, second vaccination.
So how is Caremark dealing with everything? Well, for the past nine months our Carers have carried hand sanitiser and used their full Personal Protective Equipment when at work, wearing disposable gloves, aprons and sleeves as well as face masks and visors. In recent times we have also invited the Carers to visit the offi ce car park on a weekly basis to undergo a COVID-19 test. Inevitably, there have been some positive results and those Carers have gone into self-isolation. Care providers are required to categorise their Clients on a Red, Amber or Green basis, taking into consideration the importance of the care to the wellbeing of the individual.
For instance, somebody needing support with their medication would be rated Red while another person who required only domestic support would probably be rated Green. With fewer Carers currently available to work, the RAG system has allowed us to prioritise the care appropriately and those most in need of Caremark remain well supported. Social care workers are recognised as being at high risk of acquiring infection and the good news is that government has indicated that Carers are considered of higher priority for vaccination than those at lower risk. These days, Caremark is doing so much more than providing care and support. You can’t put a price on reassurance, a friendly smile (behind a mask!) or a comforting comment. The phrase ‘light at the end of the tunnel’ has been used frequently in recent times. If we all stick rigidly to the guidelines that light will soon enough get brighter. A semi urban walk from

Thornden around Eastleigh &Allbrook
Start here This month’s walk is taking us into a slightly urban environment, with a walk just under 5 miles that is never very far from housing, but offers real variety in terms of terrain and outlook. The recommended parking is at The King Rufus Pub
135 Winchester Road, Chandlers Ford, SO53 2DU, or in a nearby street if preferred. In order to commence this walk we need to turn left out of the pub car park for only 50 metres, when we cross the busy Winchester Road and aim directly down a well hidden footpath that aims between two rows of houses. This path crosses one estate road (Vesta Way) then starts to slope down as it passes Scantabout Primary School on the left, and drops down still further and goes through the tunnel that spans the M3 Motorway above.

Emerging from the tunnel we climb upwards and keep to the right, where we greet our next turn right in 100 metres, down a long gravel track,
mirroring the lien of high tension cables way up in the sky. The next 1.8 Kms is something of a wildlife refuge, with all manner of bird life, butterflies and wild flowers (depending on the season) and this despite the close proximity of the M3. Our route takes us directly South, avoiding any side path distractions until we reach a T junction, with Peacock Trading Estate just ahead of us, when we turn left and continue through the woods for a while longer. Finally leaving this woodland path behind we turn left up a steeper slope then sharp right across the footbridge, which will take
us down beside Crestwood Community School, then just beyond their boundary we turn left and commence an unusual sojourn behind many of the houses within Boyatt Wood.
narrow as well. We are now very much on the return journey; as the vast family of allotments start to disappear whence we drop down the path into an often damp, but always wooded section.
This tarmac path shares the surface with a cycle track so keep a lookout for passing two wheelers. It crosses Broadlands Avenue, twice, but just after the second crossing and approaching another of the myriad greenways, we must keep to the left fork and abandon the right hand option. This path continues with a steady climb until the trail swings gradually around to the right, finally resting at Twyford Road, where we turn left up to the roundabout at Allbrook Knoll, then immediately left down Woodside Avenue (a very busy road). Once it is safe to do so, we need to cross over to the far side, ready for a right turn into Bosville in about 300 metres, then yet another right turn in 200 metres into Boyatt Lane, a no through road to cars, but not walkers or bikers.
Rain water offshoot from the motorway regularly leaves surplus rain along the this path, but this is only temporary as we once again climb the path to emerge beside the motorway tunnel that started our circuit from a while ago. We take the right turn here, under the tunnel once again, now fully retracing our steps along the first path. Passing Scantabout Primary School and over Vesta Way, along the narrow but sheltered footpath that finally brings us back out opposite The King Rufus Pub once again. Needless to say, the warmest of welcomes awaits the weary walker within the four walls of the hostelry.
Our progress uphill now also takes us back into the ‘country’, passing a fresh housing estate on the right and then a large entrance to a very substantial allotment on the left and just 100 metres beyond the second entrance we meet our next path on the left

The Adventures of Daichi
The Modern Magazines Camper Van I know we cannot get out and about as we would like to at the moment, but this trip to Old Wardour Castle in Wiltshire last year reminded me that we will be able to go out again (hopefully soon) and have some family fun. Good memories can replace an actual trip for the time being. How about you look at some pleasurable photos and have a trip down memory lane yourselves? Daichi the Dashing Dude, our beloved Campervan, maybe wrapped up on the driveway and desperate to take us all out again, but he is being well behaved… for the moment! This time last year he was very playful and decided to be a Time Machine. Instead of casting with Michael J Fox, loved by many in his role as Marty McFly in “Back to the Future” (excellent movies), Daichi chose me and Hayden as the lead roles, to go ‘back to the past’, to Old Wardour Castle in Wiltshire. Having travelled all the way from Japan to be with us, Daichi wanted to know what it was like here in Medieval Britain. Old Wardour Castle is an English Heritage site, so as members, it was free to enter. I had not driven Daichi for quite some time and was a little nervous, as he can

Daichi taking Debbie & Hayden to Wardour be a bit fl irtatious at times and does like to wave at passers by with his window wipers instead of indicating where he is going. This has nothing to do with me forgetting what I am doing of course and that the indicators are the ‘other way round’. In addition to that Daichi chose a route that was on single track roads for some of the time. Really. When we saw the bright white reverse lights of the car in front and its boot springing towards us, I was quick to react and avoided Daichi head butting the car’s rear-end. Not a pretty sight. We arrived safely and as I parked and switched off Daichi’s purring engine, the sliding side door suddenly sprang open and an apple, that had rolled out of the picnic bag, fl ew out! Literally. Hayden, who was giving me hand signals to help me park, laughed loudly. Daichi really was being playful and had obviously been wrapped up too long in the cold garden. Again, this was nothing to do with me pressing any wrong buttons… Old Wardour Castle is a delight. Ideal for children to run around and explore, and romantic for us oldies to look longingly at the rolling English countryside and imagine what life was like back in the 14th

Daichi, who we know is very proud, could certainly see himself as a Mediaeval Knight in very shiny armour… This castle in fact was built when we, the English, were busy fi ghting the 100 Years War in France. It is a relatively safe location. Designed as a six-sided house with rooms for guests to specifi cally impress everyone with its status, grandeur and power. It was a house to show off who John, 5th Lord Lovell, really was. How connected he was to High Society and the Crown. Built in the fourteenth century, totally as a lavish home to entertain guests and eat like kings while beautifully placed in the peaceful countryside. The magnifi cent lake was full of fi sh and the gardens were perfectly manicured. There is no moat or high defences. The castle was built with small, slit windows on the ground fl oor, which seemed to display some defences, but this beautiful structure was clearly built for luxury living. You can still walk up the spiral staircase to the top of the fi fth fl oor and marvel at the views from the windows.

Cooking is not my favourite occupation, but back in those days with two huge fi res, spit roasts and huge boiling pans it would have been a ‘hell’ of a job. No wonder the scullions, seen as the lowest of the low in those days, worked almost naked
- it would have been so hot! The Hall where the owners and their guests ate on the other hand had large windows and an extended door, to show their wealth and sophistication. There was a Debbie explores balcony where the grotto the musicians tunefully soothed their opulent guests below. The class diff erence is clearly visible. It was easy to imagine the grandeur when standing in the Great Chamber, an inner private room with even higher ceilings, where only the very important guests were invited. Sadly, The Civil War destroyed the building in 1644. There is a new castle nearby, but this magnifi cent building was left to stand as a romantic ruin for all to admire and now belongs to the English Heritage Trust. The Grotto in the secluded gardens is alluring. Totally man-made in 1792 by Josiah Lane of Tisbury and his father. With nooks and crannies to explore by both the young and the old. There are seats of stone, stalactites and stalagmites, rocks, algae, ivy and a curious atmosphere. We loved it. I can see why Kevin Costner came here to fi lm “Robin Hood, Prince of Thieves”! That would have been exciting to see in the making. Daichi was as proud as punch that we had so much fun. Nothing like a bit of history to keep the wheels turning… and Daichi certainly likes to do just that! Where will he take us as soon as the stops are once again lifted!? By Debbie Corney

Watching for Lapwing Lapwing, green plover, peewit, tewit – this bird of many names is a spectacular sight in winter. You don’t always have to go far to spot lapwings, as in winter their numbers increase in Britain as birds flock in from the colder continent. You can see them on farmland and grassy areas in wetland sites (like estuaries, lakes and reservoirs) at this time of year, roosting balanced on one leg with their heads tucked away or feeding on invertebrates. The flight of lapwings is unusual and can be described as ‘floppy’. Their large, rounded wings move slowly, feathers spread and showing flashes of the white feathers underneath; the slow wingbeats can make them appear to float and is very recognisable feature of the lapwing. Springtime flocks dart and zigzag, these amazing aerial displays confuse predators as their flight and mixed colouring make each bird hard to focus on. At first glance their plumage may look dark and dull but look a little closer or watch it catch the light and you will see the iridescent sheen of greens and purples. Both males and females have a crest on their heads, although the male’s is longer and showier. Their other names of peewit and tewit relate to their call. Lapwings often call as they fly, the calls can sound a little robotic. Around 140,000 pairs breed in the UK, some will remain here over winter but many more arrive as their numbers more than quadruple in the winter. As they are not breeding it is

a good time to look for lapwing on the coast. They may be joined in their flocks by other wading birds or starlings, taking off together as dusk settles to find a safe place to roost. Unfortunately, these fascinating birds are declining, and they are now red listed by the RSPB. Changes in farmland practises has been a big factor in their decline as nests fail and food is increasingly scarce. Like other plover species, lapwing next on the ground, meaning their eggs and chicks are particularly vulnerable to predation and disturbance. There are some positive trends however. On nature reserves and other sites that are managed for wildlife there has been recent increases in lapwing populations, as more pairs manage to successfully raise chicks. It is hoped that with careful management of the land they may once again become a common bird of our countryside
