Hello Wareham, Wool & Bere Regis! Autumn is now truly here, the nights are drawing in and the air is somewhat cooler. Stephen, Hayden and I did in fact get our last dip in the sea just a couple of weeks ago. We went down to the South Beach at Studland and had a great day out with some friends. We have a rubber dinghy, not quite like the yachts bobbing in the water, but fun nevertheless. Stephen rowed me nearly out to Old Harry Rocks...well almost! It is very shallow over that way and ideal for the children so if you have not been, I highly recommend it. Wet suits are a good idea too! I looked very glamorous in mine… Can I hear you laughing? This month in The Wareham District Directory we have local information from the recent Hemsbach twinning visit celebrating 26 years, Moors Brothers celebrate 100 years in business and there will be a fascinating talk about the history of Sandford at the next Wareham Town Trust meeting. There is also live entertainment at Wool and a special family ticket for those who love Crazy Golf! A great idea for the children or grandchildren—a game everyone can play. This is all inside. If you have a local club you would like us to know about or have an interesting story to tell, then please let me know. I would love to hear from you. Have you lived in Wareham a long time and want to share your memories—then do give me a call. We can share them with the rest of the community. Of course there are our very important trades and business people to call. I generally think things are looking up — I deliberately don’t listen to the news — so make sure the house and garden are ready for the colder season. Is the boiler working fine? Are the electrics all good? Does the garden need a tidy, the gutters need cleaning or do you need new washing machine? All the help you will find inside. The lucky winner of the meal last month was Mrs D Gregory. Well done! Here’s to a good month of October.

“THANK YOU WAREHAM” Against a backdrop of brilliant sunshine, from the pealing of Lady St Mary Church Bells to the tinkling of teacups in Wareham Town Hall, what could be a more English setting for the celebration of 26 years of Town Twinning between Wareham and Hemsbach which started in 1986? It began with the ecumenical Service at Lady St Mary Church, which was attended by a congregation of approx. 300 people. Included were representatives from the majority of Wareham churches, societies and youth groups, the Lord of the Manor of Wareham, Mr James Ryder and 40 of our friends from Hemsbach, plus our M.P. Mrs Annette Brooke, our Mayor Cllr Green and some Councillors. Following the Service, was the colourful Procession to the River Frome, where, after the Dedication from Rev’d Andy Bowerman, the newly elected Burgermeister of Hemsbach, Juergen Kirchner, presented the 25th Anniversary Purbeck Stone Bench to our Mayor Cllr. Keith Green, who accepted it on behalf of the Town. Then followed the return Procession to Wareham Town Hall for most welcome tea and biscuits. There were so very many people who contributed to this celebration. Rev’d Andy Bowerman and the helpful Team at Lady St Mary Church, Verger Eddie Taylor, Organist Nigel Webb, Jean Dixon for her prayers in both languages, the Church Choir, Bell Ringers and Jenny Elmes’ Lady St Mary Hand Bell Ringers. The Guides and Wareham (2185) Squadron A.T.C. Cadets, who presented the Burgermeister with a framed montage representing Twinning and a polo shirt embroidered with the Wareham Squadron Crest, respectively. Mrs Rozanne Longstaff, who provided the beautiful floral displays in national colours, for the two altar candles lit during the

Service by the Mayor and Burgermeister and the Wareham Town Band, who provided stirring accompaniment for some of the hymns, as well as leading us in the Processions. Here, a big ‘thank you’ is also due to Mr Steve Welsh and to his helpers for marshalling the processions. Not forgetting, of course, H.F.Bonfield, Stonemasons, who made and carved the elegant Bench and Rob Parry, from Co mpe ti ti ve C onst ru ct ion Lt d. , w ho organised its installation. However, without the incredible support of you, the Community of Wareham, the success of this celebration would not have happened. As a fitting ‘thank you’ to you all, I can only quote the words of Burgermeister Kirchner, who, together with all our Hemsbach guests, was extremely touched and overwhelmed, both by the celebration and by the reception he received during his first visit to Wareham. ‘Now I understand why people in Hemsbach want to return to Wareham again and again. I have never before experienced such warmth and friendliness’. This sentiment came as no surprise to me! This is our Town! This is the spirit of our community!

Thank you to everyone who supported The Happy Memories Café Monday 3rd September The Old Bere Regis photographs were very much appreciated as usual and Paul and Alison are going to stage another bigger Exhibition in the Upper Hall at some point in the future over a weekend in aid of the Alzheimer’s Society. The entertainer Terry Bryant proved very popular as was his lovely dog Izzy and many people really enjoyed this special morning. This now concludes the Memory cafes planned for this year but as they were so popular and well attended, we will book further mornings next year with the memory boxes and entertainment. Thank you to all the Team who helped out in anyway with this event and to Lisa Holmes Memory Advisor from Age UK and to Keith from the Bere Regis Surgery Patient Participation Group. Pop In Performers Group The Performers group is now working towards the Christmas Panto “Peter Pan a Musical Adventure” everyone is working very hard learning exciting dance routines choreographed by Julie and Ruth and the cast are learning their lines well, this is a very ambitious production involving many different aspects props special lighting and it will be a huge challenge to this amateur cast but as is always the case we rise to the challenges set before us and this will be a show not to be missed book your seats early. The Production is Showing on Thursday 6th December at 6pm Friday 7th and Saturday 8th of December at 7pm tickets are £5 in aid of the Alzheimer’s Society. Tickets will go on sale on 1st November on a first come first served basis. The Directors of the new project are: Janet and Pastor Jim Morris 471270, Lyn Simmonds 471528. The Pop In Community Cafe on a Monday & Friday morning 10 until 12 at the Lower Drax Hall Everyone is welcome at the Pop In Place regardless of age or gender, and new comers are especially welcome, pop In for a coffee or tea and a chat. We also take donations of good quality clothing, bric a brac and books. These are sold during the mornings to help fund our rental costs. Donations would be most welcome and a great help to our running costs. On Friday morning Tony Shave is there with his Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Stall, buy your fruit and vegetables and eggs then come in for a coffee too.
