Technology matters In 2012, the government set out a vision for the future of the NHS, promising a ‘paperless’ health service by 2018 and a greater choice of digital channels that offer patients increased choice in the way they access healthcare and manage their health records. Locally, Poole Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and The Royal Bournemouth and Christchurch Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (RBCH) are already taking significant steps towards embracing these challenges and achieving a paperless future. A new digital x-ray viewing system was successfully launched earlier this year across Poole, Bournemouth and Christchurch hospitals, and a new electronic document management system (EDMS) is set to be introduced in 2014. The new EDMS system will cut out the need for paper records to be transferred between local hospitals, meaning improved security of information and, crucially, fewer delays for patients. Dr Rupert Page is a consultant neurologist at Poole Hospital, and explains the difference that improved IT will make: “Our focus is providing high quality, safe clinical care. The key to this is current and complete information wherever that care is being provided. Effective IT support is crucial to meet the increasingly varied ways in which we need to deliver this care and ensure quality. Clinicians are engaged at the heart of the strategy that we are evolving, which we hope will eventually become a beacon for how clinical IT ought to be delivered.” The three hospitals are also making increased use of digital platforms to support patients and staff. New apps have been launched to benefit orthopaedic patients and people with diabetes, and Poole Hospital recently relaunched its website with a new section that allows patients to provide important feedback on their care. Peter Gill, joint director of informatics across Poole, Bournemouth and Christchurch hospitals, explains more: “By developing our IT systems and adopting new technologies, we can significantly improve our patients’ experience. Technology can give patients greater power over their own healthcare and provide staff with the tools they need to provide a more efficient and seamless service.

“We are already working towards achieving paperless patient journeys through the development and implementation of linked clinical computer systems. We are also committed to increasing our use of digital channels to reduce the effort patients and carers have to make when accessing healthcare and give them more control over their own care options.” In fact, IT already plays an integral part in most patients’ care, and the hospitals’ new informatics strategy includes more than 25 projects set to benefit patients and staff over the next five years. Some will take place behind the scenes, such as improvements to computer rooms, server management and networks. Other changes, such as a new service desk system and the roll out of an electronic system used to record patients’ clinical observations, will bring more noticeable benefits. The new observations monitoring system, known as VitalPAC, is operated using a handheld device, similar to an iPhone, allowing nursing staff to record or “track” observations, such as blood pressure or heart rate. If a patient’s condition deteriorates, an appropriate member of staff will automatically be alerted. Sarah Allaway, a senior nurse leading on the clinical implementation of the VitalPAC system at RBCH, says: “We’ve seen how technology has made a huge difference to our patients and the quality of their care. With VitalPAC, changes in patients’ conditions can be monitored much more closely, helping us to respond quickly to those who need it. Patient safety and the quality of their care is the most important part of what we do and it’s fantastic that we’re able to take advantage of modern technology to keep improving the service we provide.”

Together for Alzhiemer’s 2013
On Sunday 22nd September over 70 people took part in a 5k Fun Run in Wareham Forest. “Together for Alzheimer’s” is organised by local Personal Trainer Alex Eversden to raise awareness and money for The Alzheimer’s Society. Alex said, “This was the 6th year for this Fun Run and it is always an enjoyable social event as well as providing people of all ages and fitness levels with a challenge. This year we have raised over £2050 for The Alzheimer’s Society, who are very active in research, as well as caring for patients and their families and raising awareness of Dementia.” “Thanks to everyone who took part in, sponsored and helped with this event. Talking about Wildlife...
The Red Squirrel The iconic red squirrel, instantly recognisable by its copper colour and impressive ear tufts, is the only native squirrel in the UK. Sadly in decline now for several decades, its very existence may be under threat. The biggest threat to the survival of the red squirrel is deemed to be its introduced American cousin, the once exotic grey squirrel. In addition to competition for habitat and food sources, the greys are sometimes carriers and spreaders of the squirrel pox, fatal to reds but to which they themselves are immune. Red squirrels’ favourite habitat is conifer and broadleaved woodland, where they feast mostly on tree seeds, and the diet also includes fruits, berries and fungi, and even insects. In the autumn, in preparation for the meagre winter months, red squirrels fatten up and store food in the ground. They are mostly arboreal creatures, unlike the greys, and spend most of their time in the tree canopy, especially in inclement weather. The red squirrel is mostly solitary and does not have much of a social life with other reds, but occasionally they do share a nest, known as a drey, built a few meters off the ground. The young ones are born in dreys, usually in the early spring. The reds are not prolific breeders, and only produce one or two litters a year, with around 3-4 kittens, not all of which always survive. Despite their tiny size - the adults only weigh about 250 to 350 grams - the reds are lively creatures, and with patience, can be observed jumping from tree to tree. They are also good swimmers. The coat, which can vary from reddish brown

to almost black, moults twice a year, the winter coat being darker and thicker than the summer one. The famous ear tufts only moult once a year, in late autumn. In the UK, Scotland is a stronghold for red squirrels, with an estimated population of 120,000. Here in the south of England red squirrels are virtually extinct, with only a few small pockets remaining, such as the ones on Brownsea Island and The Isle of Wight. However, all is certainly not bleak for the red squirrels’ future, and a lot is being done in order to aid their survival amidst the threats they face. The red squirrel is protected by law, and organisations such as the Red Squirrel Survival Trust are committed to the protection of this national treasure. Nevertheless, they have decided to write new music for two accordions and perform it together. In fact, they’ve been threatening a duo ever since an impromptu slot at Oxford Folk Festival a few years ago and finally they’ve managed it. Individually brilliant, Paul and Karen together could be dangerous, hilarious or precarious, but most definitely entertaining. Expect lots of laughs and humorous banter between these two old pals too.

PURBECK CHRISTMAS TREE FESTIVAL Community News
THURSDAY NOVEMBER 28th – SUNDAY 1st DECEMBER 2013 A very special event will be held at St James’ Church, KINGSTON, at the end of November, as we start to prepare for Christmas. We invite local organisations of all ages, businesses and groups or even families, from the villages of Langton and Worth Matravers, Kingston, Harman’s Cross, Corfe Castle, to participate in the PURBECK CHRISTMAS TREE FESTIVAL. We hope to have a wide range of groups represented, each bringing their own unique style of decoration, which could be an opportunity to publicise your presence to the wider community. We plan to use real trees which will be ‘sponsored’ by your group, during the event, (for approximately £15 - £25, depending on size, to cover costs) and it will become yours after the event. We anticipate providing all the necessary lights, but the group will need to bring all the other decorations, together with a stand to hold the tree upright. It will be a very sociable community event and lots of fun assembling and decorating our individual trees. It is not a competition as they will all be wonderful. In turn we anticipate an amazing sight in this beautiful church, sometimes regarded as the ‘Cathedral of Purbeck’, to prepare us for the joy of Christmas. We would in turn like to share this lovely seasonal experience with a much wider audience and will publicise it in the local towns of Swanage and Wareham and beyond. For the moment though we hope the trees will all be decorated by the people of our villages… And then, for the last weekend of November (28,29, 30) and on Sun 1st December the Festival will be open to visitors far and wide. The Adventures of Nellie The Purbeck Publications Camper Van So this month we stayed pretty close to home and visited Avon Heath Country Park. I must admit we didn’t stay overnight in Nellie. Fair weather campers you may well call us! There are in fact quite a few caravan parks along this stretch of the road, off the A31 from Ringwood. There is the Oakdene Forest Park where we have not yet stayed, but I have used their leisure facilities which are very good. There is also St Leonards Farm Caravan and Camping Park. Either of these places would be ideal for Nellie in the warmer weather, so next summer here we come! Instead of a full weekend away, we spent the day at Avon Heath. There are various wooden frames to climb on, a spider’s web, rope climb frame, a snake to crawl through and a zip wire. All good fun… and not just for the children as you can see! Stephen and Martin with his children also challenged themselves to the ropes… and the wall. Glory was achieved, as you see in their smiles.
What I do like about having bought Nellie, is that we now force ourselves out where in the past we may have stayed inside and not made the effort. Walking is good for all of us and finding places to go where children will walk willingly and eagerly without giving you a headache by the time you get back home, is forever a challenge. At Avon Heath they cater for children really well and we chose to do “Who is Hiding at Avon Heath” which is about an hour’s walk. You can see Hayden here holding his clipboard, all smiling and at the ready. The idea is to follow the signs

We saw a number of fabulous fungi
Hayden’s artistic footprint drawings and draw the footprints of the animal described. It was fun, easy to do and kept the children entertained. On route we saw very large mushrooms, a huge spider’s web and an ant hill! I have never really seen an ant hill quite this size. It was enormous! Such a feat of nature. Martin, who was ever adventurous from a very early age, from what he tells us, put his hand on the hill and was immediately covered in crawling

creatures. Do NOT try this at home. It is absolutely not recommended, but Martin did seem to enjoy it. The children, after a rather perplexed and bedazzled look, quite rightfully, ran away! It was a perfect day weather-wise, sunny, bright and crisp. The views were quite stunning – and all within very easy reach of where we live. Of course I had my customary cup of coffee - and a rest - to end the day, having boiled the water in Nellie’s whistling kettle. PLOT Feeling Fruity
Few flavours compare with that of fruit freshly picked from the garden. Much of the fruit available in the shops (particularly the supermarkets) has been grown for it’s ability to travel well rather than it’s flavour and may have been picked well before it’s arrival on the shelf. If you fancy apples from your own tree, or a bowl of raspberries fresh from the garden, now is the time to act. Jobs for November:Start to harvest parsnips after the first frosts. Tidy up your greenhouse or polytunnel, wash out pots and seed trays before storing ready for the Spring Sow hardy peas or broad beans ready for an early crop next year. Use netting or chicken wire to protect your broccoli and cabbages from hungry pigeons. If you haven’t already done so, plant garlic and shallots. If your rhubarb is taking over, lift and divide the crowns before replanting.
If you are anything like me you will spend ages drooling over pictures of bushes dripping with blackcurrants or gooseberries, trees laden with apples, or bowls full of luscious raspberries but struggle to get to grips with the realities of production on your own plot! Patience is a virtue that is definitely required for growing your own, and this is particularly so with fruit trees and bushes. I have to confess to having an inclination to move on with anything that requires more than a few months to give a decent crop, but with most fruit you just have to force yourself to take the long term view and now being the proud owner of a 2 year old gooseberry bush and raspberry canes I can assure you that the waiting is worthwhile! Think carefully about where you will grow your fruit. Trees require lots of space (but are a wonderfully attractive addition to your plot) while bushes may be incorporated in your borders, but will probably need some protection if you aren’t going to loose a lot of fruit to the birds. Late autumn is an ideal time to add fruit to your plot as trees and bushes will be entering their dormant period. It is important to buy healthy plants and to ensure that they are dormant as they will transplant more successfully. If you are ordering from a reputable mail order nursery they are likely to arrange delivery to coincide with the best time for planting. You should also get

instruction on how to plant and care for your new tree or bush. Trees such as apple or plum may be grafted onto a variety of different rootstocks - this sounds complicated but all you really need to know is what effect this will have on the final size of the tree. If you have limited space it is possible to buy dwarf varieties some of which can even be suitable for container growing. Pollination is also an important consideration, some varieties are self -fertile and do not need a pollinator, while others may require another variety planted close by to act as a pollinator. When planting your tree out it may benefit from staking and protection around the base. One ‘fruit’ that is a little different and very easy to grow is Rhubarb. Rhubarb is actually classified as a vegetable, but certainly tastes good used like a fruit in crumbles and pies. November is the perfect time to plant out dormant crowns. Although these can be bought from nurseries Rhubarb tends to spread well when established and needs to be divided every few years so it is often possible to obtain surplus crowns from friends or neighbours. Plant your crown with the buds just above the soil and water well the first year. Once the plants have become established you can look forward to harvesting a good crop of delicious pink stems from Spring onwards - very welcome as the first ‘fruit’ of the year.

CRISPY MACARONI & CHEESE BALLS Yummy with a crisp salad or mashed potato for tea!
INGREDIENTS FOR ABOUT 8 2 cups macaroni 2 tablespoons of butter 4 cups SR flour 1 cup milk Cup of cheese (your choice) Pinch nutmeg and pepper and salt 2 beaten eggs 1 cup breadcrumbs Frying oil
Boil the macaroni and whilst it’s cooking melt the butter in a little pan. Slowly add the flour and stir quickly. Cook for about a minute then slowly whisk in the milk for a couple of minutes until slightly thickened. Remove from the heat and stir in the cheese, pinch of salt, pepper and nutmeg. Stir the cooked macaroni into the sauce. Pop into a bowl and chill for an hour in the fridge. Once cold, use a spoon to scoop the macaroni mixture into small balls. Place onto a baking sheet. Heat 2-3 inches of oil in a pan and set up your coating - put the flour, eggs and breadcrumbs into three different bowls and dip one ball first into the flour, then the eggs and then the breadcrumbs. Once you’ve dipped all your balls, pop them into the hot oil (don’t put too many in at once and take care of the hot oil). Fry for 2-3 minutes until golden and then place on a kitchen towel to cool a little before serving.

VOLVO CARS paved the way for a totally new segment with the V70 Cross Country in 1997 – and then came the less long-winded moniker: the XC70. The Swedish company’s focus in the continuous development of the XC70 model has been to create a well-heeled on-road car with competent, off-road ability. The rugged and refined present-day look reflects the vehicle’s underlying strength and competence. Volvo says to think of it as an “exclusive goose down jacket, designed around those who like their adventure with a true feeling of sophistication". Pretentious marketing spin? Not really. You see, as well as All-Wheel Drive, Hill Descent Control is a further boost to the XC70's go-anywhere potential. And these days, fresh exterior design cues sharpen its road presence. If truth be told, the XC70 would look at home in any environment, whether it's in the middle of the open country or at your place of business. As with the V70 estate car, the rear seats can be folded down in three 40/20/40 sections. Collapse all of the seats flat and the load space swells from 575 litres to 1,600 litres. Another handy function is the power-operated tailgate. What’s more, the outer rear seats can be fitted with integrated child booster cushions that offer children from the age of three and upwards a cosy and safe ride height. That’s a massive tick in the box for any parent of youngsters. On the road, IntelliSafe, - Volvo's umbrella name for all its active safety systems, is a vital part of the drivercentric approach in the XC70. City Safety technology is fitted as standard, and this advanced technology works
at speeds of up to 31 mph. You can also fit Pedestrian Detection with full auto brake. This watches out for people strolling into the car's path and automatically put the anchors on the vehicle if there’s an imminent collision. In addition, Road Sign Information supports you by displaying road signs on the instrument panel. The XC70’s seats are certainly amongst the most comfortable of the many cars I’ve driven – and the Volvo feels one of the best rides for keeping your children protected. Everything about the vehicle feels tank-solid – from the reassuring ‘thud’ the closing doors make to the quality cabin materials and thick, padded, leather seats. Still, a heavyweight, high-centre-of-gravity car like this has its downsides – it’s not amazingly nimble and all four corners tend to squeal if you take bends at speed. The steering also feels slightly lumpy around town. But get it on a long commute or off-road and it’ll fare very well. The six-speed geartronic transmission makes especially light work of any distance driving and acceleration is brisk. Granted - off-road, it’s not as heroic as a pure mudplugger, but the XC70’s talented enough to take the family into the rough – or up a snow covered hill if you need to.

National Trust in Purbeck This winter we are working on the fabric of Corfe Castle as part of our commitment to conservation. The castle will remain open throughout the work and we’ll do our best to ensure any disruption is kept to a minimum. Starting on October 14th, specialist conservators will be carrying out repairs on the first, third and fourth towers in the outer bailey, the north tower in the west bailey and the south west gatehouse. The work is due to finish on December 23rd. Scaffolding will be in place during the project and there will be no public access to the third, fourth and north towers for most of this period. Access to the south west gatehouse will be maintained through a tunnelled walkway. Work has been scheduled to avoid weekends so as to minimise the impact on visitors and no project vehicles will enter the castle during opening times. Like other medieval monuments, Corfe Castle needs regular conservation to preserve its fabric from the elements. Conservators will be checking for loose stonework or mortar, removing vegetation which can damage the walls and carrying out repairs where necessary. Any original masonry which is removed as part of the process will be replaced in exactly the same place. Voids will be identified and delicately filled by hand using a syringe filled with a traditional lime mortar. “The whole operation is delicate and a very skilled job,” said Visitor Experience Officer Pam White. “Apart from modern health & safety and plastic buckets, the conservators work very much as medieval builders would have done when they

built or repaired the castle.” The last major conservation works at Corfe Castle took place in 2006-9 and won an award from the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors for the use of traditional materials and techniques. There will be more information about the current work on display in the castle. The National Trust has joined with Purbeck Arts Weeks to create the first sculpture trail to be displayed at Corfe Castle. The trail features work by seven local sculptors scattered throughout the castle – but you’ll need to keep an eye out for them. The works are not immediately obvious but are placed so as to be ‘discovered’ by the visitor. The artists taking part are Sarah Moore, Alan Davis, Jonathan Sells, David Michell, Moira Purver, Chris Clarke and Carlotta Barrow. Subjects include birds of prey and other animals, human figures and – appropriately for a castle – a modern take on medieval gargoyles. There are also more abstract works and even a portrait of one of the artists’ own children. Many of the works are carved in local stone, including sought-after Purbeck marble, and all are available to buy direct from the artist. A leaflet is available with descriptions of all the sculptures. Castle staff can provide prices and more details. The sculpture trail will be at the castle until February 14th and sculptors will be demonstrating their skills on site from time to time during this period.
