Dare I say… At the time of this writing the weather has been really good! We had a great weekend Edition 96 away with the Cubs and Scouts camping. Having recently bought a converted van, this was an ideal opportunity. The van is used to transport all the magazines each month, but at the weekend the little fridge and cooker come into their own. I have to say I love it! Waking up in the middle of a field, not literally of course, and seeing the sun rising was really quite liberating! Talking about Wildlife...

By the seaside The Jurassic World Heritage Coastline, which stretches 95 miles from East Devon to Dorset, is well-known as a place of historical value and beauty. Visitors to the area can stand at the tops of the cliffs and admire the sight of pebbled beaches, bright blue water, coloured fields and the clear, white Purbeck cliffs.

Kimmeridge Bay lies in a remote area of the Dorset Coast, a few miles south from Wareham.

The bay is a great place at which to swim, surf, dive or windsurf. Between the months of May and September, snorkellers can enjoy the snorkel trail and, on May 28th and 30th, those who book a place can take part in a Kayak Safari.

Dorset Wildlife Trust organises events along the coast throughout the year. These events enable people to contribute to and experience this beautiful and unique coastline and raise awareness of the pressing need to protect it.

Dorset Wildlife Trust’s Fine Foundation Marine Centre is right by the slipway in Kimmeridge Bay, in the voluntary Purbeck Marine Wildlife Reserve.

This is the longest established Voluntary Marine Nature Reserve in the UK. It covers 3,500 hectares and extends from St Aldhelm’s Head to Mupe Rocks. There are things to do, expert advice, wildlife information, displays and gifts to buy plus seawater tanks with real live local marine wildlife. Marine Centre summer opening times are Tue to Sun (plus bank holidays) 10.30 - 17.00.

Better care for patients with dementia “ONE gentleman was very vocal, and we discovered he liked to sing. We bought CDs of his favourite music - Frank Sinatra and swing - and he would sing to his heart’s content. He didn’t have a bad voice either...”

The use of music is just one initiative helping older patients to cope with what can be a challenging and confusing experience.

Dr Sue Hazel is the Royal Bournemouth and Christchurch hospital’s lead consultant in dementia care, the implementation lead for the National Dementia Strategy within the two hospitals.

Sue says this strategy has been the catalyst for a range of change across the two hospitals, as well as at Poole Hospital, and has helped to create a new era of progressive and patientcentred care.

“We already work closely with our colleagues at Poole and the merger will give us an even more unified front,” said Sue. “We will have a greater impact in areas like ward environments, staff training and community involvement.”

At Poole Hospital, consultant geriatrician Dr Premila Fade highlights the flagship Lulworth ward, where changes to the ward environment have been used to support dementia patients.

“We improved the layout, colours and lighting to make the ward more welcoming,” said Premila. “A hospital visit can be very confusing for patients

“Since Lulworth was refurbished we’ve been able to use the principles on other wards too.”

Memory clinics for older and frailer patients, specially trained dementia ‘champions’, volunteer mealtime companions, unique patient ‘life diaries’ to help a patient’s stay that much more individual and comforting - all these initiatives and more form part of the award-winning and innovative work in place at all three hospitals.

• Poole’s dementia carers played a key role in developing the hospital-wide Human Touch campaign, with 10 golden rules advising all staff how best to ensure that patients’ privacy and dignity is respected.

• As well as the Dementia Care Pathway guidelines, Bournemouth also has its own ‘top tips’ for nurses around carrying out personal care, nutrition and bedtime among others.

• Volunteer mealtime companions at both trusts – as well as brightly-coloured cutlery and crockery – help encourage patients to keep up their food intake as well as create a friendly mealtime experience.

Birthday Celebrations for newly relocated Discover Purbeck Information Centre Home made cakes provided by the Discover Purbeck team were a delightful addition to the usual services provided by the staff at the Information Centre on Monday 25th March. The team were celebrating their first year in their new location on the ground floor of Wareham Library where their presence now means extended self-service opening hours for library users.

www.jurassicjaunts.co.uk Two options here a 2 ½ mile walk with on reasonable ascent and descent, or a 4 mile walk with an additional steep ascent on the 2nd part. Again, fantastic views along the coast in both directions.

How to get there: - Grid Reference; 882803.

Turn right for Kimmeridge/Creech off the Wareham Bypass. Follow the road for about 3 miles; proceed up the hill along the edge of the wooded area until you reach the top of the ridge. Follow the road for about ¼ mile to a sharp left-hand bend. Here you want to branch right for 1/3 mile and then take a left turn down to Tyneham village.

Information:- There is a small charge here which goes towards the upkeep of the village and surrounding area. Free toilets are available. The village, which includes a church, ruins from the 2nd World War and a re-constructed school, as it was in World War II, is well worth a visit.

Walk details:- From the car park, proceed along the track in the opposite direction to the way you entered the village. The toilets are on the left after about 100 metres, at the 90 degree bend at the end of this track.

Go straight ahead, over the stile or cattle grid and follow the path up to Gadd Cliff (1/2 mile). This offers extensive views to

both east and west. Go over the stile, turn right for 50 metres, then right again, looking west towards Wobarrow and Mupe bays.

Descend into Wobarrow Bay, with views of Wobarrow Tout to your left, and your choice of how to proceed is made here. Either turn right up the gravel track and head back to the car park or you can continue on the 2nd section by turning left down the track towards the beach, then right after about 50 metres. This will lead you to the climb you see ahead of you which takes you up the edge of Flowers Barrow fort (1/3 mile).

At the top, staying inside the yellow posts, turn right and follow the path beyond the Trig point until you come to a junction in the path (1 ¼ miles). With a choice of straight on, or sharp right, turn sharp right and follow the track down to Tyneham village (2/3 mile).

National Trust in Purbeck An annual survey of Purbeck National Trust volunteers reveals the many and varied activities they have been getting up to in the last 12 months.

In Purbeck we are lucky enough to have around 250 regular volunteers, supplemented last year by more than 150 others who helped out occasionally or on a one-off basis.

External groups, including Purbeck School, other schools and colleges and employers, brought a further 600 to join the party, mostly on one-off tasks in the countryside.

Guests on working holidays in Purbeck carried out a total of 840 hours.

Between them, this small but dedicated army gave more than 30,000 hours of their time over the course of a year.

The largest group comprised the countryside volunteers, who last year numbered about 120 and notched up a combined total of more than 10,000 hours.

Their largely unseen work helps protect important habitats like Purbeck heathland and increases our knowledge of the animals and plants which live there.

They also ensure the countryside is a place everyone can enjoy by maintaining paths and stiles and support our rangers in general countryside management tasks.

Other volunteers help welcome our visitors to Studland Beach and Corfe Castle. Still others work in education, passing on specialist knowledge of everything from birds and insects to medieval history.

And it doesn’t stop there. We have handy people, gardeners, photographers, and we have just taken on our first video filmmaking

volunteer.

Volunteers are vital to the work of the National Trust. In 2011/12 they contributed four million hours nationwide – equivalent to £33.6 million. Without them, we simply wouldn’t be able to continue the work we were founded to do – looking after special places for ever, for everyone.

Becoming a National Trust volunteer in Purbeck can be as easy as coming along to one of our regular monthly drop-in sessions.

There’s no commitment, and you can stay for an hour or all day if you want to.

Meanwhile, we are currently on the lookout for the following: • Someone with carpentry experience to join the countryside team, as well as general handy people, • Retail volunteers for the shop at Knoll Beach – would include looking after plants for sale, • Active types to join a new team maintaining gravel tracks. May include training in skills such as tractor driving, • Friendly people to help welcome visitors to Studland Beach and the Discovery Centre.

Whichever role you choose, you can be sure of a warm welcome, the chance to meet new people and be part of a team, and the knowledge that you are supporting a worthwhile cause.

Insurance for the over 50’s: WHY DO WE DO IT? Age UK and its predecessors have been offering commercial products and services for over 30 years. So with this in mind it’s fair to say we have a wealth of experience in this field but what many people want to know is why do we exist and how do we help older people?

Age UK the charity, exists to help those in later life with various things from benefits and social care to health and well-being. Age UK Enterprises exists to provide older people with a choice of quality products and services that offer value for money and are tailored for the over 50’s. A lot of older people have specific requirements that are not catered for by many financial services providers and Age UK Enterprises aims to help where others have failed.

The next question often asked is how do we know all this? How do we know older people are being failed by financial services providers? We also assist with Equity release and Annuities.

Several people also want to know what are the benefits of Age UK Enterprises, why should they consider us over the likes of power-houses such as Aviva or Saga? Apart from providing an offering which addresses the needs of those in later life, Age UK Enterprises is also a social enterprise - this means that profits raised are gift aided back to the charity. In the last financial year we were able to give a fantastic £23 million which was used directly to fund the charity’s work.

So in conclusion Age UK Enterprises exists because it is needed. It is needed at the request of older people, it is needed to help where other providers fail and it is needed because it provides vital funding for the important work the Age UK charity does. Both employees and customers alike can take great pride in that knowledge.

APART FROM track days where do you get as much funâ&#x20AC;?? Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s kind of what my brain kept repeating each time I got behind the wheel of this fun supermini.

Everything about the new Peugeot 208 is so exciting - right from the tiny, sporty steering wheel to the grip the car has around corners.

I really feel Peugeot is back on track with its contribution to the hot-hatch market. Way back in the 205 GTI days the French car maker had that particular market sewn up â&#x20AC;&#x201C; and the 205 was, and still is, an icon in the motoring world.

The 208 will become a legend too; no doubt about it. It has the looks, feel and performance of a true supermini as well as all the safety gadgetry you need for modern day motoring.

My test car looked superb cloaked in a Spirit Grey paintjob combined with a black and grey leather effect interior trim. Its 17 inch alloys looked fat against its diminutive but muscular body and its rear spoiler and double chrome tailpipes looked â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;the dogâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;sâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;.

On starting the engine, the 1598 cc engine sounds promising, and once you engage first gear and take off, you know this car is not your usual little motor. For a start, the gearshifts feel precise and sporty and the car is eager â&#x20AC;&#x201C; itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s like a dog straining at its leash until it can find an open stretch. Then, when you do find a suitable uncluttered bit of road, you can set the 208 free. Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s when it sits back on its haunches for a moment before launching into a blistering attack on the asphalt. The 156 bhp is certainly apparent and the 0-62 mph comes in 8.1 seconds, climbing where legal, (German autobahns calling?) to 134 mph.

Available in both three and five door body style variants, the 208 is certainly the embodiment of an exciting new direction for Peugeot. No surprise then that there has been an incredible

and positive response to the new 208, illustrated by over 7,500 orders so far. It really has been a tremendous start for the car, as it was also named â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Best Superminiâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; at the Auto Express Awards during the first week of launch.

The 208 also obtained five stars from Euro NCAP, certifying its safety credentials, and was the first car in its segment to achieve this following the introduction of more demanding review criteria.
