Dear Wareham, Wool and Bere Regis, Well we needed some rain but I think we got more than we bargained for! I’d like a little sunshine again now. I think you will agree. There’s lots of local information this month and some interesting articles for you to read. I have written one myself about a recent walk we did starting at Durlston Castle. It was a superb day. I highly recommend that you try it. There are other articles...one about The Wareham Rotary Club, Word of Mouthpeace, the new Barn Café, Purbeck Events and a the Rex Cinema timetable. Amelia’s Miracle is a moving little article on page 40 . There are a few “funnies” this month too on page 32. I am looking for local people’s celebrations so that we can all wish you Happy Birthday, Happy Anniversary or drool over the photo of your new baby. See page 34 for the data on this. It will be a new feature in our next issue and could be a great way to wish someone a Happy Day! Also if you have a group or club you would like everyone to know more about please email your data to us. There may be many people who would love to know about you or can give some help. If you have done something good or really worth while I can also promote that for you too. We all like to hear good news! If you have any suggestions or ideas for these pages then please let me know. In the meantime do keep our advertisers busy. They like that. Many are very happy with all the calls they get from you. Rotary Club of Wareham The Rotary Club of Wareham have organised another Wurzel Gig plus supporting band on Friday 15th June. This event has always been a sell out, so book your tickets early to avoid any disappointment. The event is at Rye Hill Farm (Pampered Pigs), Bere Regis, Wareham BH20 7LP. Gates open 6:30pm and there is free parking available. There will be a bar with plenty of beer and cider plus a hog roast. Tickets £15 children under 14 can go free so long us each child is accompanied by one paying adult. Talking about wildlife with
Red Squirrels Britain's only native, the red squirrel, has seen its population on a steady decline. It is estimated that as few as 140,000 live in Britain as opposed to the 2.5 million greys. These squirrels are typically distinguished by their long, bushy tails, ear tufts and russet red fur. However, the colour of their fur can range from black to red, causing confusion in identification. The colour of an individual may also vary with the time of year, as thicker winter coats appears darker. The fur on a red squirrel’s belly is always white. Reds are smaller and more delicate than their grey brothers. Their bodies measure between 19 and 23cm and their tails are between 15 and 20cm. There is little difference between the sexes, making it difficult to distinguish between males and females. Sciurus (Latin for ‘squirrel’), are nimble creatures and spend the majority of their time in the treetops. They live in a range of habitats, from conifer forests to broadleaf woodlands. Look out for their large nests (dreys), which consist of twigs, moss, grass and soft hair. They may appear in the forks and hollows of trees. The diet of these rodents consists of seeds - they love the seeds in conifer cones - as well as fungi, nuts, shoots and berries. They forage for food throughout the year and will create stores in the gr ou nd du ri n g a u tum n t o pr epar e themselves for winter. The mating season begins in February and March, at which point reds may be spotted chasing one another through the trees. Red squirrels tend to produce their young in the spring. A second litter may follow in the summer. Females usually

have 2-3 kittens, but can have up to 6. These are born after 45-48 days. Their survival in England is threatened primarily by the grey squirrel, which competes for their food and also carries the squirrel pox virus. Greys are largely unaffected by squirrel pox, but it is lethal for reds. In southern England, red squirrels can be found only on the Isle of Wight and on the islands of Poole Harbour, especially Dorset Wildlife Trust’s Brownsea Island nature reserve, on the National Trust owned island, which is now open daily to visitors until November. News from Kingston Village EVENING CONCERT SALISBURY CATHEDRAL CHOIR MONDAY 21ST MAY On Monday 21st May Salisbury Cathedral Choir will be singing and we advise you to come early as it will be a very popular event. The performance will be starting at 7.30pm. We are very grateful to Robin Stringer for arranging the concerts at Kingston.
Easter Report On Palm Sunday, there was a wonderful sight of a real donkey (Cederic) leading a procession of people through Kingston village, carrying palm crosses, palm branches, with singing led by the Purbeck Singers, for the Palm Sunday Benefice Service. Over 100 people attended. With people watching also along the street and such beautiful sunshine, it was a perfect occasion to remember the joyful procession of Jesus into Jerusalem. As a Benefice we also reflected on the distress and agony of Jesus, leading up to his death and had a special service on Maundy Thursday, which included foot washing, and also a time of prayer and readings on Good Friday. The Easter Sunday dawn service at 5.30am was held in St Aldhelm’s Chapel together with an early breakfast of fish, cooked over an open firepit, symbolizing Jesus’s reappearance to his disciples. On Easter Sunday morning too, it was a lovely to see so many younger children enjoying their Easter egg hunt after the service. There seems to be a new season of life

coming into the Church which currently looks so beautiful with the daffodils in full bloom. This year we have been delighted to welcome several young couples and their families as they join us regularly in preparation for their weddings in 2012. In the 21st century we try to keep the new generation informed of events through our website: www.kingstonopc.org.uk We are also very thankful for the Directory and all those who produce and circulate it through the year. Nice to see them… April sees the blazing forsythia bushes gleaming with their bright yellow flowers, and the sight of this reminds us to visit garden centres to buy our bedding plants ready for May. If you’ve a garden, then you’ll know the delight of planting a colourful display, and you’ll know the thrill of seeing your perennials coming into flower bang on time. What’s often forgotten is the huge number of almost-anonymous people whose names are embedded in the names of plants. We enjoy the flowers, but totally forget the human beings they should remind us of… …people like Claude Aubriet (1665-1710), a French flower and animal painter who travelled to the near east to find the objects of his art – and whose name gives us the lovely aubretia for our borders. Or Monsieur Matthias de l’Obel, (15381616), a Flemish naturalist, born in Lille, who was an enthusiastic traveller, plant collector, and author of early books on botany. He was the prestigious physician to our King James I – and gives his name to our popular little lobelia flower. Many of us will be planting begonias –

A pink variety of the hyacinth flower wonderfully colourful and long-lasting. They are named after Michel Bégon (1638-1710), a French governor of Santa Domingo. Th e ‘b egonia’ was first discovered in Mexico by Père Plumier, an early botanist and monk, and he named it after Bégon, who was his patron. And of course we can’t forget the fuchsias – named after Leonhard Fuchs (15011566) who was appointed Professor of Medicine at Tübingen university at the early age of thirty-four. Fuchs wrote several books, including one giving advice on how to treat patients suffering from the plague, and this was published in London during the reign of Elizabeth I. Père Plu mier also discovered the ‘fuchsias’, about the year 1700 – long after Fuchs had died – but he decided to name it after Fuchs, who of course never saw the flower himself! There are so many flowers and shrubs named after people who are themselves virtually unknown: abelia, from Dr Clarke

Of course, many flowers are named after Greek gods and goddesses, such as Amaryllis, Hebe, Hyacinth, Iris, Nerine, Tagetes, and Tithonus. And the veronica is named after Saint Veronica, who gave Jesus her veil to wipe the sweat off his brow. But back to forsythia… this is named after William Forsyth (1737-1804), a Scottish gardener who was superintendent of the Roy al Gard en s at St James’s an d Kensington Palace. MURDER MYSTERY PICNIC & WALK IN THE CORFE CASTLE RUINS Gates open 6.30pm for walk at 7.30pm July 16th, 18th, 23rd, 25th August 6th, 8th, 13th 2012 Yes, it’s back! The highly acclaimed Double Act Murder Mystery Walks are back this year. Once again with thanks to the National Trust for access to the Castle itself. The gates will open at 6.30pm for you to bring your own picnic and dine alfresco in the outer bailey before the mystery starts at 7.30pm. Bulky items can be left near the exit for collection when you leave the Castle. All we ask is that you take any rubbish home with you. What could be more atmospheric for a murder mystery than the ruins at twilight? However the walk will involve steep rough paths and steps and we must leave the castle ruins before dark for safety reasons. So anyone taking part does so at their own risk. Due to the popularity of the past walks and necessity to restrict numbers for safety it is strongly recommended that early bookings be made by purchasing tickets at the National Trust Shop, The Square, Corfe Castle or by phone on 01929 480921. Tickets are £7 for adults & £6 for children.

The Shire Reeve has been dispatched to Corfe to investigate illegal furze cutting on the common, but he uncovers sinister conspiracies and dark evil deeds that threaten to destroy not only the peaceful idyll of the Dorset countryside but also to tear apart the young Christian nation now known as England. Being the dark ages, suspected miscreants were often subjected to trial by ordeal to prove their innocence - not a pretty sight! All will be revealed along with many other surprises at Corfe Castle on July 16th, 18th, 23rd, 25th & August 6th, 8th, 13th 2012 at 6.30pm.

The Easter Bonnet parade was again a delight the winner of the children’s section was Bethany Leigh and the adult winner was Sarah Lye, well done to everyone who took part and to our Judges Gaye and Judi. Many thanks to all who donated Easter Eggs and supported this and to the team of helpers than ran the event under the supervision of Joanna. The Pop In place has just elected the new Team for 2012 13 many thanks to everyone for your support over the last year and for all you continue to do. Could you be a Volunteer in 2012? Have you ever thought of helping out in your own Community? New Volunteers are always welcome, if you could spare a couple of hours on a Monday or a Friday to help serve the teas once in while I would love to hear from you. There are many charity events that happen during the year, when we need extra volunteers. Please call me on the number below to talk through how you can help within your own community. Transport is now available to our sessions at no cost to you. We are delighted to inform you that we are able to offer transport to and from the sessions. Pop In Performers Group Our Summer Show “Consider Yourself One of Us” Saturday 23rd June 2pm and again at 7pm tickets at £5 each no concessions will be available from 1st May from the Pop In Place Monday or Friday morning or from Ruth Hughes. As the title suggest the production is based on “ Oliver ” and has all the well-known and greatly loved songs from the musical. The money raised will be donated to Julia’s House Children’s Hospice, this it a wonderful example of how our children and young people are working together to raise funds for other children and young people that need the help of a wider community to fund much needed hospice provision. The Pop In Sessions on a Monday and Friday morning 10 until 12 at the Lower Drax Hall Everyone is welcome at the Pop In Place regardless of age or gender, and new comers are especially welcome, pop In for a coffee or tea and a chat. We also take donations of good quality clothing, bric a brac and books. These are sold during the mornings to help fund our rental costs. Donations would be most welcome and a great help to our running costs. On Friday morning Tony Shave is there with his Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Stall, buy your fruit and vegetables and eggs then come in for a coffee too. If you have never popped in why not give it a try, there is a warm welcome to you all.

Days later, a relative called about the picture, laughing hysterically, and suggesting that she take a closer look. Puzzled, the mother stared at the photo and was shocked to discover that in addition to her son, she had captured her reflection in the mirror wearing nothing but a camera.

Amelia’s Miracle Amelia Saunders is a 3 year old little girl from Reading, who was diagnosed at the beginning of February with a rare, inoperable brain tumour. Her family heard this devastating news and decided to spend the time they have left with their daughter having fun and laughter and enjoying every day they have. Recently Amelia has been offered some experimental treatment in Houston, Texas which has the possibility of helping to save Amelia’s life. Her family are trying to raise as much money as possible to help Amelia and her mum and dad get to Texas, start the treatment, and continue it for as long as needed. Without this treatment the doctors in the UK have no long term treatment for Amelia. Please help us to raise this money so that Amelia can have the hopes and dreams of any child and live a normal, happy life.

Finding Hidden Treasure in Dorset If you have never heard of “geocaching” before and you like walking, or you have children that you would like to get out of the house and get some fresh air, then this is definitely something you will like. What’s more is it is free! All you need is a GPS device which you can buy from Argos, Amazon or local outdoor equipment stockists for example, or you maybe able to use your phone for which you can get an App. You then go online to www.geocaching.com where it is free to register. There are literally thousands of walks that people have added and they are in practically every area you can think of across the country (and even abroad!). Now, this is not just an ordinary walk… there is treasure to find! Well actually it is a box of trinkets into which people have put all sorts of little things. It could be a large ‘cache’ (meaning hiding place especially of hidden goods, treasure) or a tiny something to find. The idea of the walk is to find the treasure. It is ideal for children who would otherwise severely object to even the thought of walking! Hayden, our son always responds with a

Some spectacular views along the coast big “Yeah!” when I say we are all going out to do a geocache. He doesn’t even look at me if I say I want to go out for a walk! There are two types of geocache… one that just gives you the coordinates to get somewhere and you follow that until you find it. At the end of the ‘hunt’ you are given a clue to find the treasure. The second type is good for younger children as it gives lots of clues and there are lots of questions as you go along. This is called a multi cache. We like those the best. Every ten minutes or so there is a question about where you are. You need to answer the question to get the coordinates to be able to carry on. At the finale you get a clue to find a hidden box or similar object, often containing a little book to write your name in or a comment and then you can exchange a little trinket for something you want to leave behind. All great fun! Free and it gets us out of the house, enjoying the English country side, seaside, forest, in fact anywhere and everywhere. did three geocaches starting at Durlston Country Park. A lovely cup of coffee and a piece of cake overlooking the fantastic British coastline set us off on the right foot. It was absolutely gorgeous, blue sky, blue sea and perfect temperature. I really enjoyed the whole day. What is funny, is seeing adults getting very competitive about finding the ‘cache’ first! There was a buzz of excitement as each of us rummaged through the undergrowth to find the treasure. At the last cache, after walking for over an hour, my sister and I decided to sit and take in the amazing view and let the others ‘fight for their supremacy’. We sat on a very comfortable rock and relaxed. After 10 minutes or so watching our friends busy hunting I was sitting on it all the time! or old, fit or not so fit. You can even create your own for others to follow, once you get the hang of it. Why not do one yourself and send me some photos for us to print in the magazine for you? We couldn’t believe it, it was very funny… though I am not sure all of the others thought it was as funny as we did… You can see some photos of our day. I highly recommend geocaching.
