News from Wareham Town Council – March 2011 Honoured Townsman Board Wareham Town Council, at time of going to press, is about to unveil a new display board in the Council Chamber. Made in Wareham by G J R Woolley, Joinery Manufacturers of Sandford Lane, the handsome board will record the names of Honoured Townsmen of Wareham who have been granted this special status as a mark of recognition for services to the community of Wareham. Following a generous donation towards the costs by the late Charles Patterson, installed as an Honoured Townsman in 2009, the impressive new board will take its place with other display boards on the wall of the Chamber and will be unveiled before the Council meeting on Monday 7th March. Mr Patterson’s widow, Jane, will attend with family members and other Townsmen: Sergeant at Mace Nigel Spiller and the Rev. Canon Peter and Mrs Frances Hardman, whom many in Wareham will remember from Lady St Mary Church before their retirement to Wiltshire.
Town Criers Competition 2011 Wareham Town Council will again be hosting and organising a Wareham Town Criers Competition in 2011. Invitations have been sent to many Criers in the South and West and some further afield and it is expected that around 15 Criers plus their Escorts will parade through the town on Saturday 9th July en route for the competition area at the south bank of the Frome. Watch this space for further details.
Town Hall Toilets Under delegated authority from the Amenities Committee, the Premises Working Party has approved a quotation to upgrade the hot water facilities in the Town Hall ladies and gentlemens’ toilets. New electric water heaters will be fitted and plumbed in on 10th/11th March which will ensure the continuation of hot water to these areas following the demise of a boiler facility.
Dorset Police/CCTV (ANPR) Cameras At time of writing, Inspector Chris Weeks of Dorset Police was due to attend the Council meeting to be held on 7th March to discuss the possibility of two new Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) CCTV cameras being placed on the A351 at the northern entrance to Wareham. Councillors wish to know more about the benefits of these cameras for the local community, although their role in fighting and deterring crime nationally is undisputed. A letter from the Chief Constable of Dorset outlining the effects of impending government cuts to the Dorset Police Service, with consequent reductions of staffing levels, will also be discussed.
New Council Notice Board – Bere Road A long awaited new notice board has been installed at Bere Road, north Wareham. The splendid double door cabinet, made from weathered oak, was made by a Purbeck joiner at roughly half the cost of a similar model obtainable from specialist national suppliers. It is the Council’s policy to always source work locally if possible and endeavour to save costs to the taxpayer.
Council Meeting Dates 2011/2012 – Calendar of Meetings The Council has now set its final meeting dates for the next Civic Year from May 2011 to May 2012. The calendar may be viewed on the Town Council’s website – www.wareham-tc.gov.uk and on the Town Council notice boards.
Lengthsman Scheme As reported in a previous issue, the Town Council intends to recruit a Lengthsman utilising part funding obtained from Dorset County Council. It is planned that this person will, amongst other things, take over various duties currently carried out by the County Council. A prime task will be to carry out much needed
11 weed killing in the town and follow up dead weeds to remove them from site at a later stage. A Lengthsman can also help with maintenance of open spaces and play areas, litter picking and sweeping, cleaning and minor repairs of street furniture, grass cutting. pruning of bushes and trees, removal of dog faeces, removal of road kill, minor building/ground work, checking and maintenance of public rights of way, stiles and fences, digging of ditches, drains etc, removal of fly tipping/fly posting/graffiti and painting of various items (e.g. benches/bus shelters). Details are still being finalised as we go to press.
Spring Fever – Weddings in the Air? A reminder that Wareham Town Council is licensed to hold wedding and civil partnership ceremonies in its historic Council Chamber. The Dorset Registrar Service conducts the ceremony and Council staff are on hand to assist the wedding party and deal with any problems on your big day. If you are interested, please contact us and we will be glad to advise you of costs and book an appointment to view the facilities. A brochure is also obtainable from the Admin office.
Elections 2011 This year is election year for Wareham Town Council along with eight other local parish councils. If there is an election, due to more candidates standing than the number of seats, it will be on 5th May 2011. If you are interested in becoming a local councillor, an information pack will be available from Purbeck District Council or from the Town Council. An excellent circular walk from Morcombelake village to Golden Cap, the highest point on the south coast. It provides great views along the coast and of Morcombelake village. How to get there: Grid Reference 399939. At the west end of Morcombelake, there is a turning to the south called Ship Knapp. Turn into this lane and park on the left after about 100 metres, near the finger sign to Golden Cap.

Here, turn left around the edge of Langdown Wood for about 1/3 mile until you come across a stile in the left-hand fence which you should take and follow down to Filcombe Farm ahead of you. Here, you should turn right and right again, selecting the path across the field rather than the farm track to the lane. After crossing the field, you will meet the lane and cross the lane to the stile in the opposite hedge. Cross this and follow the path back to Morcombelake village (½ mile). Walk details:Follow the finger sign towards Golden Cap. This will lead you on a level path and track along the base of the small ridgeway to your right and will bring you out at a crossroads with a farm lane(3/4 mile). Turns left then immediately right down the next track and follow the track and then path to the top of Golden Cap (1 mile). First you will meet the memorial stone to the Earl of Antrim , from the National Trust. Continue along the top, past the Trig point and follow the path off the top to the left. At the stile on the descent, carry straight on across the field to the next the stile. Cross this and turn left for Langdown wood and proceed up the slight incline to

Talking about wildlife with
Heathlands wake up for spring As many species start making an appearance after the winter, spring is a good time to enjoy nature walks on the heaths. Dorset heathlands are amongst the most important in the country, providing a unique habitat year round for many rare and threatened species of wildlife. With the longer days of spring, reptiles emerge to bask in the sun. All six British reptiles – sand lizard, common lizard, smooth snake, adder, grass snake and slow worm - can be found on the Dorset heaths. Smooth snake and sand lizard are rare heathland specialists, the rarest snake and lizard in Britain and relying on heaths for their survival. The best time to see the elusive sand lizard is in April, when the males turn a stunning green for a short period of time to attract a mate. Of all the British reptiles, only the adder is poisonous, but they are shy and will try to avoid you. You are lucky if you get to admire one curled up to bask in the sun. Rare birds such as woodlarks and Dartford warblers are characteristic of heaths, and can be seen flitting amongst heather and gorse. From late February on, some will be building their nests on or near the ground, so make sure to stay on designated paths in order to avoid disturbing them and that goes for your dog too. Nightjars arrive from Africa any time from April and are similarly vulnerable, another reason why dogs have by law to be under close control during the breeding season. Representatives of the insect world can
be found in the springtime as well. The ex ot i c a nd co l o urf u l w asp sp id er emerges in April, as does the green tiger beetle. Heaths also contain more spider species than any other habitat in Britain and the heathland ponds and bogs are good for dragonflies. Heathlands are of great environmental and historical value, but have become much reduced and fragmented in the last few decades. To help preserve this unique environment and its vulnerable wildlife, keep to the paths, clear up after your dog and keep him on a lead from February to August. What’s in a Name? What’s in a name? We may not like the name we were given by our parents. We may even have felt strongly enough to have it changed by Deed Poll. But names are important. It wouldn’t be the same if we all had numbers – somehow that would make us feel less than human. But when someone speaks our name we are endowed with a special identity. Names of course all have meanings as any good etymologist will tell you. But don’t believe everything you read on those personalised mugs in Clintons!! They are usually there to make you feel what a good and virtuous person you are. Having said that my name – James - comes from the Hebrew Jacob and means ‘supplanter, cheat, and schemer” Oops! Names in the Bible were always important because they often described the nature of the person. When Our Creator God reveals Himself through the pages of scripture there are many names that give us an insight into His divine identity. Jesus touched on some of those names when He came to reveal God to us – “I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life”. “I am the Good Shepherd”. “I am the True Vine”. “I am the Light of the Word”. But the one name that perhaps is most intriguing and mysterious is found in the Old Testament account of Moses’ dialogue with the Almighty, recorded for us in Exodus chapter 3. In answer to Moses enquiry about how he should describe God to the Israelites, he receives this astonishing reply from the Lord – “tell them, I AM has sent me to you” (Exodus 3:14). This name embraces the fact that God is completely independent, that He relies on nothing for life or existence. Life is in Himself. He is the eternal God. There was never a time when He did not exist, or a time when He will not exist. The question “who created God?” is simply not relevant to One who is eternal. But there is also an inherent idea behind the name I AM that God is “the becoming one” – He becomes whatever is lacking in our time of need. The name I AM invites us to fill in the blank to meet our need – when we are in darkness, Jesus says I am Light; when we are hungry He says I am the Bread of life; when we are defenceless He says I am the Good Shepherd. He is the ever present God – there for us. Someone in our fellowship recently read out these telling words, “I was regretting the past, and fearing the future. Suddenly my LORD was speaking – “My Name is I AM.” He paused. I waited. He continued. “When you live in the past, with its mistakes and regrets, it is hard. I am not there. My Name is not I WAS. When you live in the future, with its problems and fears, it is hard. I will not be there. My Name is not I WILL BE. When you live in this moment, it is not hard. I AM (here).” Are you in a hard place today? Now? At this moment? Then call upon the One who is there right with you at this moment. The One who says I AM here for you. The Drax Hall your Village Hall Thank you to the Pop In Place Performers group who has just put on a fantastic community Pantomime. The Hall is now in great demand for a whole variety of different groups, organizations and meetings and has been improved now to a very good standard. The hiring fees are very reasonable considering we have to keep up our insurances, maintenance, fire and electrical inspection costs, and still we operate within the budget. As a Bere Regis person born and bred and the Chairperson of your Village Hall I think its time to express a few of my thoughts and I believe the thoughts of a great many of the villagers. There is a lot of talk at the moment of new muti million pound buildings to be everything to just about everyone in the village. Yes we know that the Drax Hall your Village Hall isn’t perfect there are some issues that in an ideal world, a world with endless available finance could be changed, but this is not an ideal world that we are all living in with the country in the economic crisis ideals cannot become reality. Therefore we are all left in a position to make the very best of what we have and that is precisely what we do here at the Village Hall. This old building is alive with so many positive and creative groups, the sound of music and laughter fills it and the people that benefit from it all feel very blessed. This Hall has soul and the people make it what it is, as have countless people over the years. So many memories of events at the Hall the old Church Harvest Supper where we used to bring our own knives and forks and John House would patrol around the long trestles table with the jugs filled with cider and say “are you sure you girls haven’t had some of this” as we giggled away perched on maroon Iron framed chairs with canvas seats, that became a little uncomfortable as we sat through the entertainment by the likes of my Mother and Cis Lewis reading their Poetry. It is also true to say Kath Jeeves has been responsible for more wonderful happenings at the Hall than most of us have had hot dinners and Kath along with the Woodbury Hill Singers have treated us to great nights of community entertainment, that is not to mention the Autumn Leaves group, then there are all the events that the Village Hall Committee organize the live theatre and the Brilliant Photographic events, the WI with all the many and varied subjects that they are now covering, the Kingsbere Quilters Group, Dance Group, Majorettes and the Gardening Club, only a few weeks ago I walked in on Sue and Megan laying up a fantastic feast for them all, and the Hall looked so inviting. For the last fifteen years I have headed up The Pop In Place that has used the Village Hall as often as 5 times a week and the amount of peoples lives that this has enhanced with all the many activities that we do has been phenomenal not to mention the charities that we have been able to help in the process. The Hall has so many wonderful community happening within its old but full of character building, so many memories of people and events of the past and it has a bright and positive future ahead. Keep up all the great work everyone this Hall and all your contributions makes for a thriving village community and Bere Regis at this moment is a exactly that and long may it be so. Yes you can call me nostalgic, even old fashioned you can call me what ever you choose but I am proud to say that I love this old building, I love everything it stands for and the history that surrounds it, and I say to you all when what you have is not perfect you have to make close to perfect what you’ve got.

WAGGY TAILS RESCUE, is a registered charity based in Ferndown. They rescue and re-home dogs that have been abandoned, neglected or otherwise in need of a good home. Enchanting Ella Ella is a delightful three/four year old crossbreed. She is very good-looking and extremely friendly. She has settled well in her foster home but needs more socialisation with other dogs. She will need to continue her training and would be ideal for someone who has owned a large dog before.
EXCITING EASTER April looks like being a busy month – so pop a date in your diary now! Saturday April 9th is Waggy Tails’ Easter Fair at the Barrington Centre, Ferndown. The Purbeck Association of The National Trust What town is served by Hurn Airport? Easy enough – almost everybody reading this will know that it’s Bournemouth. But which politician claims to have auditioned for the role in National Velvet that was eventually played by Elizabeth Taylor? * These were questions from our annual lunchtime Fish & Chips Quiz in February. It’s a light-hearted event, strictly for fun. For the second year running we ended with an exciting tie-breaker after two teams finished level at the end of the main quiz. Each year the winning team members get nothing more than a beautiful hand-crafted certificate (provided I remember to print them on the morning of the quiz). The picture shows our winners. Along with our programme of outings and talks we run several social events like this. At £8 for a fish & chip lunch with tea/coffee and a couple of hours of entertainment it’s great value. Our annual membership also remains great value at only £5, or £7.50 for a couple. BBC1’S Antiques Roadshow To V isit Lulworth Castle Lulworth Castle is delighted to announce that BBC ONE’s ever popular Sunday evening programme ANTIQUES ROADSHOW will be filming for its 34th series at Lulworth Castle, on Thursday, 2nd June, 2011. The doors open at 9.30 am and close at 4.30pm. Entry to the show is free. This will be presenter Fiona Bruce’s fourth year with the Roadshow and she says, “Presenting the Antiques Roadshow is, for me, one of those rare and very lucky coincidences in television when you get to work on a show that you already love to watch. Exploring the human story behind every object is what makes Antiques Roadshow so fascinating. And everyone loves the agony and ecstasy of the 'what's it worth? moment. The AR isn't just about antiques - it's history, beauty and drama all wrapped up in one.' Some of Britain’s leading antiques and fine arts specialists will be on hand to offer free advice and valuations to visitors, who are invited to raid their attics and bring along their family heirlooms, household treasures and car boot bargains for inspection by the experts. James Weld, Lulworth Estate General Manager said “We are thrilled to welcome the much loved Antiques Roadshow to the beautiful setting of Lulworth Castle in Dorset, for one of this years venue selections. It is such a prestigious and hugely popular programme, which has been on our television screens for over 30 years, so it will be very interesting to see what the residents of Dorset will bring along! It will most certainly get everyone rummaging around for their hidden family treasures!” The last series, watched by an average of six million viewers, included some great finds such as an Egyptian stone head dug up in a garden worth £10,000, a medieval ring found
on a farm and valued at £20,000 and a Meissen cup and saucer bought at a car boot sale for £2.50 which was worth £5,000. Among some of the stranger items brought along were uneaten pieces of Royal wedding cake and a life-sized stuffed lion once used in a TV series. People with large pieces of furniture or other big items can send details and photographs of their objects to: ANTIQUES ROADSHOW, BBC, Whiteladies Road, Bristol, BS8 2LR or e-mail them to: antiques.roadshow@bbc.co.uk. It may be possible to arrange to look at the item in advance and organise transportation to the venue. Series Editor Simon Shaw says: “The team are all looking forward to visiting Dorset.
