There is an interview with the famous and well-loved Alan Titchmarsh, a very intriguing and beautiful Castle on the cliff, there’s a second interview with our British champion Mo Farah, Dorset Wildlife Trust tells us all about butterflies, there is a Garden Art Exhibition, and as you will see the Purbeck Cup Youth Football Competition has gone well. There’s news from Bere Regis Chapel as well as many other local groups. NEW LOCAL SERVICE FOR USERS OF SEPTIC TANKS Householders living in the rural areas around Dorset and Hampshire relying on septic tanks and cesspits for their domestic sewage disposal, may be unwittingly damaging their drainage systems and risking costly repair bills. Cleansing Service Group is finding that more and more off-mains drainage systems are not working as well as they should because they’re being neglected and even used as “rubbish bins”. This increasing trend is creating blockages and drain a ge issu es – n ot to men t ion unpleasant odours and overflows that pollute local environments and watercourses. The company says the tanks are a common and effective way of managing domestic sewage but it is important to ensure the systems are emptied regularly to reduce the risk of any problems occurring. To help householders ensure their dra in a ge sy st em w orks efficien t l y Cleansing Service Group (CSG) now has a specialist vehicle based in Blandford and are on hand to provide advice and assistance on how to look after your system and ensure it stays trouble-free. CSG’s Top Five tips for keeping a tank in good order are: • Don’t put rags, nappies or sanitary items in the system • Don’t pour paints, solvents, pesticides or fats down the drain • Use bleaches and disinfect ants sparingly • Use only boiling water or drain rods to clear blockages • Have the tank desludged at least once a year

Fly-Mo Medium distance British talent Mo Farah eyes up Olympic glory. Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the past seven years, you will be aware that all eyes are firmly fixed on London this year as the capital plays host to the greatest show on earth – the Olympic Games. But as the nation prepares to fix its eyes on the once in a lifetime sporting extravaganza, for the home grown athletes competing the prospect of career defining and life changing moments grow ever nearer. Few will be feeling that more keenly than Mo Farah. Ask any athletics fan, even the more casual ones, and they will tell you that Farah ranks among Britain’s best hopes of gold medal success come August: after all, Farah is the current 5,000m world champion and currently holds a whole host of records, including the European track record for 10,000m and the British indoor record for 3,000m. Now living in America in Portland, 29year-old Farah’s mind is completely focussed on the prize. “The training is going well,” Farah confirms. “I’ve just come back from high altitude training in Kenya and the other athletes and I there are doing broker training together, which is going well.

Mo Farah “I’ve not done anything different to what I have done over the last couple of years – I always train with Kenyans. I used to train at St. Martins College and it was there I saw some Kenyan athletes doing their thing, which was very different to what I was doing. I was still into going out, having a good time, but they would be in bed by 8pm. I ended up moving in with them, just learning things from them. It really helped me improve; it was exactly what I needed.” To use running parlance, the Olympic

Find us online at www.warehamdistrictdirectory.co.uk build-up is reaching the home straight, so is Farah feeling the pressure as one of Britain’s best hopes? “I wouldn’t say that there’s any extra pressure,” Mo says “except for the pressure you put on yourself. You’ve just got to be strong and do everything that you can. I’m definitely looking forward to it, but you just have to try not to put that pressure on yourself.” Farah’s story is an uplifting one that is in tune with the Olympic spirit. Born in Somalia, he moved from Mogadishu to London aged eight able to speak only the most basic English. “I could say ‘excuse me’ and ‘where is the toilet?’” he says “which made it hard, but my cousin was in the same class so I got through it.” Yet despite that tough start, it was actually at school that Farah’s talents were spotted. More interested in football (“I only wanted to play on the wing for Arsenal when I was at school”), his PE teacher Alan Watkinson nevertheless encouraged Farah to take up running after being impressed with the potential he displayed at Feltham Community College. “I’d never done any running in Africa, even though I lived there until I was eight, so I didn’t even think about doing it before.” Soon, though, his potential began to become realised. He won five school titles and made a major breakthrough by winning the 5000m at the European Athletics Junior Championships in 2001. Farah’s career since turning senior in 2005 has had its share of disappointments

as well as glory, with his performance in the Beijing Olympics in 2008 a huge letdown. “I had to regroup from that setback – really reassess and come back stronger. And to be fair, I’ve done just that.” Farah has upped his game considerably, with 2011 his most successful year to date, culminating in two medals at the World Championships - silver in the 10,000m and gold in the 5,000m. How would Farah rank his chances of Olympic glory? “It will be difficult, of course. The biggest rivals are the Kenyans and the other Europeans, and I’ve just got to do everything I can. I’m not going to make any predictions. I am desperate to make it onto the world stage but I can’t say how it will go. It’s a long way from scaring deer in Richmond Park where I used to train!” But even away from his own medal hopes, Farah appreciates the opportunity hosting the Olympic Games gives London and the country at large, and is looking forward to what should be an incredible experience. “Yeah, it’s going to be amazing. To have the Olympics right on your doorstep is absolutely amazing. But you’ve got to take that advantage of having the home crowd along with you. Purbeck Cup - The Result Schools Junior Football Competition Over the last two terms, eleven Purbeck First Schools have been taking part in the Purbeck Cup, a Junior Football Competition sponsored by Wareham Round Table. The Schools were organised into two Groups and the top two Schools in each Group went forward to semifinals and the Final. As last year, the Final was contested by Sandford St Martin’s First School and Bere Regis First School on Wednesday 16th May. In a thrilling and high-quality match, Bere Regis emerged victorious 1-0. The Cup and players’ medals were presented to the teams by Anthony Muraro, Chair of Wareham Round Table. The third/
fourth place match was won by Stoborough First School in a match with Swanage First School, 5-3. Anthony Muraro commented that “its been very rewarding to be involved in such a great competition which has given over 100 Purbeck children the opportunity to play football for their school”. Jol Mitchell (Purbeck Cup organiser, on behalf of Stoborough First School) commented “we’ve had another great year of football with 27 matches and 157 goals. We are very grateful to Wareham Round Table for their support and to all the Schools for taking part. Plans are already in place for next year!"

Garden Art - for a brighter outside Pauline Tantardini will be showing her garden art at Compton Acres on 23rd and 24th June 2012. Pauline’s work uses mainly bold colours and designs in an abstract form to add interest and vibrancy to any garden. These pieces can enliven drab walls, fencing, sheds and can also be used amongst planting to add extra colour and interest all year round. These unique paintings are created using acrylics on exterior wood and then varnished for protection to create a long lasting finish. The size is mainly 60cms x 60cms, although larger or smaller pieces are available. Pauline came up with the idea for garden art whilst painting outdoors one summers day and propping the completed artwork against a wall to dry. She loved the look of it in this location and began to experiment with colour and design to see what would work well outside. These pieces were noticed by friends and family and much admired – garden art was born! Talking about wildlife with
Butterflies There are currently under 60 species of butterflies in the UK, and many of them are facing a serious decline in numbers. Development of our countryside and changes in farming methods have led to extensive losses of butterfly habitats and, despite conservation efforts, some species might even face extinction. Butterflies are important pollinators and, as they are extremely sensitive to changes in their environment and the weather, they are good indicators of anything having gone awry; a decline in a butterfly population indicates that a habitat is becoming less suitable for wildlife overall. As a species, they are not very adaptable, and many wildlife reserves around the country are dedicated to creating and conserving suitable habitats for endangered species. We are lucky that Dorset is still a haven for many species; in fact it is one of the best places in the country to see butterflies. Na t ur e r e s er ve s i n t h e c o u nty a re managed for the benefit of butterflies, including rare and threatened species such as marsh fritillary (try at Kingcombe Meadows or maybe Powerstock Common), silver studded blue (heathland reserves) or Adonis blue (King Barrow Quarries on the Isle of Portland). Gardening with butterflies in mind provides ever more im p o rt a nt ha b it at s. Butterflies are attracted

to nectar rich gardens where plants such as primrose, buddleia and thyme flourish in sunny but sheltered spots, and by letting wildflowers grow in abundance and avoiding chemicals, you will further encourage these welcome visitors. The Purbeck Association of The National Trust After what seemed like weeks and weeks of non-stop rain we were quite worried about our first long-distance trip of the year in May. We were going to A La Ronde, which is near Exmouth in Devon. This is a fascinating house, but it’s quite small and we knew that our coachload would have to split into small groups to view it. This meant that others would have to spend some time in the garden. In the event we were lucky, and as you can see from the picture, there was actually some blue sky around. A La Ronde itself is unusual – a 16-sided house built in the late 1700s. Visiting with a group like ours is a great way of seeing places like this. The cost of the coach trip for a couple is about the same as the fuel cost of taking an average car, so for a single person it’s even better value, and of course there are no worries about driving, navigating or parking. Going green Passionate Yorkshireman Alan Titchmarsh looks back over 23 years getting down and dirty in the garden. Let’s be honest, it’s a rather inexplicable phenomenon - Alan Titchmarsh becoming a sex symbol and housewife favourite. Is the greenfingered personality really up there with the George Clooney and David Beckham? Or is it all just a rather long drawn out joke? Alan certainly thinks it might be... “I honestly think someone’s been having a laugh for all these years at my expense,” he begins. “And then I get journalists and people asking about it and I feel if I ever once took it seriously, I’d get even more laughs. I know what I look like and I’m certainly no Hollywood idol - I think it’s time we put that one to bed once and for all because no one’s buying it, especially me!” Titchmarsh, who has just turned 63, will celebrate the tenth series of his selftitled ITV chat show later this year, and he’s already compiled a wish list of celebrity guests for the big event. “Maggie Smith would be amazing but she never does interviews as far as I’m aware. She would be the ultimate for me, so fingers crossed. Though as much as I’d love to sit down with her, I’d imagine it might be a terrible interview! “And Julie Walters - I’ve had her on before but she’s one of my favourites. I

It’s such a huge event, on a worldwide scale, and while I’m thrilled to even be involved, I find myself a little jumpy at the notion. It’s such a massive event watched by billions across the globe… and that’s a thought I could actually do without too! I just hope I don’t get tongue tied.” Will he get a chance to meet the lady herself on the day? “I’m not sure, to be honest. I might get a royal wave if I’m lucky.” As for BBC’s Gardeners’ World Live, visitors will experience theatre and stage shows, as well as getting the chance to meet their favourite TV stars, including Monty Don, Carol Klein, Joe Swift and of course, Titchmarsh himself, who explains why the four-day event is w onder f ul oppor tuni ty to mee t gardener’s from around the country. With so much time out of Yorkshire, Titchmarsh will be happy to return for some well-earned time in his Ravensworth home. “I must say, as a proud Yorkshireman, there’s nothing quite like coming home after working away. We all know how special the county is, but sometimes you have to leave and come back to really feel it again. I’ve been very lucky in my career in the sense that I can

experience London and all that holds, whilst also knowing that venturing back to home roots is there for me. “I’ve never really had a career plan,” he admits. “I’m more an opportunist. When opportunities come along, it’s about recognising them, and that's something I’ve always done. Saying ‘yes, I’ll take a shot at that’, regardless of the risk of flak. “The Ground Force show took a lot of stick initially for popularising gardening, but I stand by it. It used good techniques and allowed people who were somewhat intimidated by the process to realise it’s not out of their reach. “As for what the future holds... well, right now, I’d just like to continue working, presenting my show, writing more books and spending more time in my garden.” And does he get much time to venture amongst the flora and fauna, what with dreaming of Maggie Smith and waving at the Queen? “Every chance I get, I’m in there. I make sure each evening to at least take a jaunt around my garden, do a little dead-heading. A word of Gratitude at the time of The Diamond Jubilee of HM the Queen As this is the edition that will go out at the date of the HM The Queens Diamond Jubilee I feel that it is appropriate to reflect on Bere Regis as a community in 2012 and it’s amazing volunteers. Within the Pop In Place we have a regular team of 39 volunteers, there is another team that run the Village Hall, and those are just the organizations that I personally head. The editor of our magazine Alison Debenham is also a volunteer as are all your Parish Councillors then there are all the many organization and groups that exist within the village, so many in fact that I cant begin to mention you all by name. It is true to say that all over this wonderful Village that we are all privileged to call home many people are regularly volunteering in many different ways to enhance the lives of others. I am sure that you will all agree that at this time of great celebration of Queen Elizabeth who in my opinion is one of the most inspirational woman of our time, we as a village should express our gratitude to all our willing volunteers and the vibrant cohesive community that we have all helped to build.
Thank you to all who supported the first Happy Memories Café in April Thank you to everyone that came along to the Café, Thank you to Julie and Sarah Lye and Pastor Jim who helped me with the 1950’s Display this was an interesting step back in time and greatly enjoyed by those present. Thank you to everyone who helped out in anyway on the day and with making the wonderful selection of homemade cakes. Thanks to Denise Smith for her help with coordinating the event the quiz and the risk assessment etc. Thanks to the Surgery for their help with publicity. Arts Club
June is a busy month for members of the Isle of Purbeck Arts Club "Studio Workshop". As well as sketching and painting outdoors on Tuesdays, they are getting their paintings mounted and framed ready for their Exhibition on from the 16th to the 30th June. During the Exhibition two members are on duty who will be happy to chat about the club and answer any questions. Painting venues for June & July include Studland Church, Swanage Pier, Peveril Point and Studland South Beach. Any members of other sections of I.O.P.A.C.can join in at the weekly venues. What to do in your Garden in June As any gardener knows this time of year can be fantastic in the garden if all goes as planned. That includes of course the weather co-operating with hot barmy days and nice cool nights filled with the aroma of night scented flowers, if you had the forethought to plant them. So, for starters here are some things that you can do in the garden this month: Keep pots and baskets well watered. As plants are growing vigorously and the June sun can be strong, watering twice a day could be necessary in some cases. But please observe any water restrictions in your area. If they are in force you can install a water butt and/or save the water from your kettle (cooled) and the washing of veggies, in a bucket and supplement your watering. It’s surprising how much water one can collect in this way. In addition new plants should be watered in well at planting time, and during any dry spells. When planting, create a shallow dip around the plant base to hold water, and give a good soaking every couple of days, not a cupful twice a day. The point here is to encourage roots to extend deep down into the soil to find moisture and become well established. Little and often watering methods encourage roots to come close to the soil surface where they are more likely to dry out. Mulch around plants in beds and borders and large containers, to retain moisture. A nice thick layer of leaf mould is the best, but grass clippings or composted wood chippings are good alternatives. A layer of newspaper, covered over with grass mowings will help to suppress weeds and retain valuable moisture during long hot spells.

If you have climbing plants in your garden you will understand the beauty and height they bring to the garden. Plants, such as Clematis, Virginia Creeper and Honeysuckle, to mention just a few, are that they twist themselves around anything they come into contact with and support themselves. However, sometimes their stems can fall astray and they need some help. Simply tuck them in to the rest of the plant or tie it wherever you want to grow. Take care not to use wire or anything that could dig into branches or stems if they do need some added help. Dead-heading roses starts now and continues right through to the end of autumn. Cut off each spent flower head as and when you spot them. On floribunda varieties, wait until all of the flowers on the stem have died and cut them off at the base (where it meets the branch). For an organic slug and snail control try saving your egg shells and then crushing them up and putting them around the base of the plant you wish to protect. The theory is that snails and slugs don't like crawling over this and will go elsewhere for lunch or dinner.

Defender of the Faith This month witnesses a rare opportunity for our beleaguered land to join together and celebrate the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II. Our village of Bere Regis is making its own unique contribution to the festivities and many individuals and organizations have worked hard to produce a diverse programme of events. Firstly congratulations to all who have contributed to this truly united village occasion. I feel sure all the hard work is going to pay off and we are in for a wonderful time. So what is at the heart of all this rejoicing? For me, as for millions of other loyal subjects, it is an opportunity to acknowledge with thanksgiving a truly exemplary reign from a monarch who has remained faithful and true to her calling through sixty remarkable years. It’s a chance to celebrate the fact that we are still one of the few countries left in the world to retain The Monarchy – in our case a royal figurehead who has been a stabilizing influence during those changing years. The fact that the Queen is a non political figure is an important factor in that. Politicians come and go – currently twelve different ones during her Majesty’s reign – but our Queen remains that quiet strength and uniting force for our nation. There are those who would like to see this country become a Republic and ditch the Royal Family as an unnecessary expense. But what is not perceived is the work rate that most of the Royals (ok – not all!) have put in to generate billions for our economy over the years. So let’s not be afraid to lift up our heads and for once be proud that we are British as we celebrate this special occasion! The Queen’s official title and ‘job description’ – at least in this country – is “Elizabeth the Second, by the Grace of God, of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and of Her other Realms and Territories Queen, Head of the Commonwealth, Defender of the Faith”. The title “Defender of the Faith” reflects the Sovereign’s position as Supreme Governor of the Church of England, who is formally superior to the Archbishop of Canterbury. This fact is recorded on every British coin where you will find the letters FD – an abbreviation of the latin Fidel Defensor. ‘The Faith’ refers of course to the Christian Faith based on God’s revelation in the Bible and demonstrated in history through the life of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. The Christian Faith is truly unique and distinct from every other world religion. There is no record of a Creative Deity who ‘became flesh’ and dwelt among those He had created in any other religions. There is certainly no record in any other religion that this same Deity paid the ultimate price so that His creation could be saved. World religions may lay down some good principles for trying to better ourselves and climb some kind of moral or spiritual ladder that will elevate us to a higher plain. But the Christian God’s assessment of humanity is, to say the least, totally honest. We do not have the moral strength, because of our inherent sin, to climb that ladder ourselves. But God in His love and mercy came down the ladder in the Person of Jesus to pay the price of our sin on the cross and forgive us and carry us into heaven. This Gospel message is at the heart of the Christian faith. It is this same faith that has shaped and moulded the social changes in our British society. It is this faith that used to be the backbone of our British Constitutional system and is woven into our British culture. Whilst we should pay the utmost respect to the beliefs and practices of those from other faiths let us not neglect to join with our Sovereign to ‘defend the faith’. We not only have to keep the faith, a phrase that is used for almost anything these days, but in the words of Holy Scripture we are to contend for the faith that was once for all entrusted to the saints. (Jude 3).

Our gracious Queen reminded her subjects of this Faith in her last Christmas Day message to the nation and I can think of no better way of completing this month’s thoughts than by quoting from part of that speech. “Finding hope in adversity is one of the themes of Christmas. Jesus was born into a world full of fear. The angels came to frightened shepherds with hope in their voices. ‘Fear not’ they urged, ‘we bring you tidings of great joy, which shall be for all the people. ‘For to you is born this day in the City of David a Saviour who is Christ the Lord’. Although we are capable of great acts of kindness, history teaches us that we sometimes need saving from ourselves – from our recklessness or our greed.” “God sent into the world a unique person – neither a philosopher nor a general, important though they are, but a Saviour, with the power to forgive. Forgiveness lies at the heart of the Christian faith. It can heal broken families, it can restore friendships and it can reconcile divided communities. It is in forgiveness that we feel the power of God’s love. In the last verse of this beautiful carol, O Little Town Of Bethlehem, there’s a prayer: O Holy Child of Bethlehem; Descend on us we pray; Cast out our sin and enter in; Be born in us today. It is my prayer that that we might find room in our lives for the message of the angels and for the love of God through Christ our Lord.” (From the text of the Queen’s Christmas Day message 2011). So let us give thanks at this time of Diamond Jubilee that God has granted us a Queen who has not merely defended the Christian faith but has demonstrated it in her selfless love and devotion to our nation over sixty years. And may we, as those who have received that message of God’s love and forgiveness, hold fast to that same faith. Praying for God’s SONshine this summer ! Our Annual Summer Fayre & Coffee Morning will be held on Thursday 21st June at Manor Farm, Spring St, Wool 10.30am to 12 noon. We also hold an annual Autumn Supper at the D'urbeville Hall in Wool. This year the date is Saturday 20th October with entertainment by the Wool Community Choir. More details to follow later.
