Dear Wareham, Wool & Bere Regis! This time of year we start to see the season of summer fayres and fetes. Hopefully the weather Edition 98 will be kind and perhaps not quite so “British”, to give these wonderful events the best possible attendance. Although we do always try and enjoy them, in true British Style, whatever the weather! On that note our son’s school recently held both their sports day and summer fayre. Stephen has to admit that his neck is a little sunburnt after a glorious afternoon on the school field watching the displays of country Published by: dancing, karate and even a field gun that is going Stephen & Debbie Corney on a sponsored ‘pull’ later in the year. Dorset children get creative this summer! As the summer holidays fast approach, parents in the Wareham area looking for fun, affordable and creative ways to keep their children entertained need look no further than the Artsreach summer programme of shows and workshops. Whatever your child’s creative streak may be, there’s something for everyone to get stuck into this summer including music, dance, theatre, craft and storytelling! Peter Rush is well known as the freelance illustrator for BBC TV’s ‘Jackanory’ for twenty-five years. He now focuses on, amongst other things, creating magnificent wire and paper sculptures. This summer, children can join him at Durlston Country Park on 13 August to create a sculpture of their own, inspired by Dorset sea birds such as guillemots, puffins, cormorants and gulls. Suitable for ages 8+. Call 01929 424443 for details. Treehouse Theatre are visiting four venues around the county with Storybox: an exciting and interactive hour of making music, dressing up and creating stories for children aged 2-8yrs old. On 21 August, they arrive in Winfrith Village Hall to recreate the exciting race between The Hare and The Tortoise. Call 01305 853633 for details. Storyteller Tony Horitz will capture imaginations in Broadmayne Village Hall on 29 August with Secret Stories of Dorset. Enjoy a session of traditional storytelling, based on local tales from the South Dorset Ridgeway. Children can work in groups to create small stories of their own before joining together and creating a brand

01929 408080

new legend about a distinctive Ridgeway landmark. Suitable for ages 6+. Call 01305 854205 for details. Kathy Kelly’s Fiddlesticks Toddlers session in Milborne St Andrew on 22 August and is just perfect for those with creative little ones. Parents and toddlers can enjoy singing, story-telling, baking bread and sharing food together whilst getting hands on and enjoying some simple crafts using clay, paint, sheep’s fleece and other natural resources. Call 01258 837371 for details. The again in Milborne St Andrew on 28 August, children can spend the day making Ancient Games & New Inventions with Karen Hansen. Cut and carve wood to make the outdoor throwing game of Kings, whittle figures for the tactical game of Hnefatafl or create a brand new game of cunning. Learn how to safely use knives, gauges, saws and mallets and work with wood. Suitable for ages 9+. Again, call 01258 837371 for details. Please note it is always worth booking well ahead as the workshops have limited places and often sell out. Full details on all of the events above and the full summer activity programme for the county, including recommended ages, times, contact numbers and prices, can be found in the Artsreach Summer Activities programme which is available at tourist information centres and libraries. Take part in The big ask and help shape your local NHS Health organisations across Dorset have come together to ask you to take part in The big ask - a unique survey which will help shape NHS services in the future. We are asking for your views on a whole range of NHS services, from your local GP and out of hours’ services to community, mental health and hospital services. The survey will look into how well informed you are about the various services available locally, how you choose your health care and what services you use the most. It will also ask how you think the NHS can provide information in the most effective way. Most importantly, it will seek your opinions on the NHS in Dorset – what you value the most and what can be improved. Announcing the launch of the project, Dr Forbes Watson, Chair of the NHS Dorset Clinical Commissioning Group says: “It’s called The big ask for a reason. We are not just asking you for tick box responses. This is an in-depth analysis of your views. Everyone has a view on the NHS but The big ask is whether you are prepared to provide us with some really thought provoking responses that will help shape services in the future. “More than 750,000 people live in the region. This survey will ensure that patients and the public are at the heart of any decisions we make about the future of the NHS in the county. It will ensure we fully understand how people use our services and what they think our priorities should be.” This is the first time that NHS organisations

Wareham District

across the county have worked together on an exercise of this scale. It includes the major hospitals in Bournemouth, Christchurch, Dorc hester and Po o l e wo r k i n g together with the Dr Forbes Watson newly-formed Dorset Clinical Commissioning Group, which represents the county’s 101 GP practices, and Dorset HealthCare, which provides community health ser vices across a wide range of locations. To ensure the exercise is independent it is being carried out by Bournemouth University’s Market Research Group. More than 12,000 people will be sent the survey but anyone can take part. “An ageing population, new treatments and rising expectations all require the NHS to continue to adapt and develop, but limited taxpayer funding makes the challenge greater each year,” continues Dr Watson. “Ensuring that NHS care remains of the highest quality, accessible and up to date means we need to establish our priorities and make some careful decisions over the next couple of years. “That is why this survey is so important and we want as many people as possible to have their say,” he adds. Please take part in The big ask. You can complete the survey online at www.bournemouth.ac.uk/ thebigask or if you would like a paper copy please contact Ehren Milner at the Market Research Group on 01202 961379 or emilner@ bournemouth.ac.uk . The survey will close on 9th September and the feedback will be published in the autumn.

Ofsted Results Celebrated in Bere Regis Bere Regis School is celebrating the results of its most recent Ofsted Inspection. The overall grade for the school under the new, tougher regime was Good with many Outstanding features. The Inspector commented that “since the last inspection in 2009 (which was also good), there has been significant improvement and all previously identified areas for development have been successfully addressed”. The Inspector found that pupils really enjoy coming to school so attendance is high and their behaviour is exemplary. An outstanding feature is the pupil’s ownership of the management of behaviour. Peer Mediators and Playground Friends make a significant contribution to very happy playtimes, ensuring that everyone gets on really well together and no-one is isolated. Pupils enjoy taking responsibilities around the school. They are justly proud of their involvement in designing the school grounds and new Village Play Park. A key aspect of the report is “the relationship between the school and village which is extremely strong, forming a very cohesive community from which both benefit significantly” The Inspector acknowledged that teachers and teaching assistants are skilled in teaching pupils across a wide range of age

01929 408080

and ability and use the mixed age classes to advantage, allowing pupils to join groups for different subjects according to their learning need rather than their age. “Outstanding relationships exist between pupils and teachers (and Teaching Assistants). These, together with interesting work, engage pupils in their learning quickly and with enjoyment” The Governors came in for particular praise as they are exceptionally knowledgeable about the school’s strength, areas for development and the good quality of teaching ~ “They bring a wide variety of important skills to the life of the school from the world of work. They consistently ask challenging questions about its performance and are very supportive of all the school’s activities”. All in all, it is a very good report. Issues to be developed include enabling pupils to make rapid progress through more outstanding teaching. We always have at least consistently good teaching with at least 50% being outstanding. Under the new framework, to become outstanding overall, we need to take that figure to at least 80%! A full copy of the report is available from the school website on www.bereregis. dorset.sch.uk

National Trust in Purbeck The National Trust is working with Purbeck communities and cycling groups to encourage cyclists to enjoy the countryside responsibly. Cycling as a pastime has grown rapidly in recent years. A combination of easy access from Poole and Bournemouth and spectacular routes to ride have meanwhile made Purbeck a prime destination for both on and off-road cyclists. As a charity promoting enjoyment of special places we welcome this, but we recognise that rising numbers and changes in technology – in particular the use of powerful lights to extend off-road cycling into the hours of darkness – have led to some communities feeling under pressure. That’s why we are asking Purbeck communities to help us draw up plans to manage cycling on National Trust land in Purbeck. We’ve already asked Studland residents to identify particular areas of concern and now we want to hear from elsewhere in Purbeck. Your feedback will allow us to draw up a map of ‘hot spots’ where conflicts arise and help us find the best ways of dealing with them. Already some key issues have arisen, including cycling on footpaths where it is not allowed, speed and conduct of cyclists and a perceived lack of consultation when outside groups organise large scale cycling events in Purbeck. We’ll be talking to cycling clubs and the media to encourage cyclists to know the law and ride responsibly. We’ll produce information for cyclists, improved signage at

01929 408080

hot spots and, in conjunction with Dorset County Council’s Rights of Way Officer, consider physical barriers where appropriate. We’ll work to improve communication with event organisers using National Trust land and affected communities, and we’ll invite communities to help us improve the management of cycling in Purbeck into the future. If you would like to comment on cycling on National Trust land in Purbeck, or identify hot spots where there are particular issues, please contact Operations Manager Emma Wright on emma.wright@nationaltrust.org. uk. Please note that cycling on the public highway is outside the jurisdiction of the National Trust and issues of this kind will be passed on to the police as appropriate. Did you know? • Cycling is allowed on bridleways and byways but not on public footpaths, except specially designated shared routes. • Cyclists must give way to pedestrians and horse riders on bridleways. • The Countryside Code encourages cycling as an environmentally friendly alternative to the car. It asks everyone to respect the rules governing rights of way, be considerate and leave gates as you find them. • Cycling contributed nearly £3 billion to the UK economy in 2010, according to a study by the London School of Economics. • Sales of new bicycles rose 28 per cent in the same year.

Talking about Wildlife...

Beside the seaside Dorset Wildlife Trust is very excited to take part in the Wildlife Trust’s annual celebration of our fantastic coast, with National Marine Week 2013. Events are taking place all over the country, and this is a chance for anyone, of any age to get involved with what lies above, beneath and in Dorset’s iconic seas.

squirts and crabs. Our seashore detectives events on Tuesday 6th August (12.30-2pm) and Thursday 8th August (1.30-3pm) gives kids (and big kids!) the chance to search for signs of creatures from the deep along the seashore and use our amazing underwater camera to see sea creatures living in their natural habitat.

National Marine Week begins on the 27th July and there are lots of opportunities for you to experience the UK’s sea animals and plants for yourself. Many of us forget that beneath the waves there is a rich marine world, bursting with colour and life. Fish, lobsters, limpets and anemones all thrive in our local waters – and, in the summer months, dolphins hunt close to our shores.

If you’re crab-mad, and fancy a day with us at Kimmeridge, there will be an opportunity for families to attend the ‘Crafty Crabs’ event at 12.30 on Wednesday 7th August, where children can create crazy crustaceans. If you then want to learn about how to catch and care for crabs without harm to other rockpool animals, we will show you how – the eco-friendly way! Our ‘Ecofriendly Crabbing’ event starts in the afternoon, at 3pm.

Did you know that dolphins only rest half of their brain at a time whilst the other half stays alert and watches out for predators? For the chance to capture a glimpse of these majestic creatures, come and join us at Durlston Castle in Swanage on Sunday 28th July at 10.30am, as DWT takes part in the National Whale and Dolphin watch for just £3pp. We have teamed up with Durlston Country Park to learn, record and report information about dolphins. – Bring binoculars if you have them! If you’ve ever wanted to see what’s beneath the surface whilst staying dry, our clear-bottomed Kayak Safari at Kimmeridge is for you. We also have goggle-viewers to help you explore the seafloor and literally give you an insight into the habitats under the sea. Let our experts guide you on a safari of the sea! Each 2 hour session includes a guided safari for £25pp per session on various dates throughout July and August. Booking is essential. For those who prefer to keep their feet on land, the Fine Foundation Centre at Chesil Beach has numerous species to uncover, including anemones, sea

DIY for beginners Drilling is dusty work... … but you can reduce the amount of dust created whether you have a DIY helper or not. If you’re working alone, simply tape an open envelope to the wall underneath where you’ll be making the hole and most of the dust will be caught there. If you have a partner working with you, get them to hold the nozzle of the hoover just underneath the drill bit.
