Welcome to your February edition of The Wareham District Directory! Despite the mixed weather we did manage to get out in Nellie, The Purbeck and Dorset Publications Campervan and this month she took us to The Solent Sky Museum. Hayden was so thrilled!

Nellie, actually has her own Facebook and Twitter pages now. There is also a new fun page right here in the magazine where you can test your knowledge of the South and see if you can recognise where she is…so Where is Nellie?

Are you fed up of the old bathroom, need new blinds, a driveway, your dirty oven cleaned, want new garage doors or a locksmith to help you? You can even get some new binoculars. All of those and many more companies are within these pages and ready to help you. Please give them a call!

There is lots of local news for you too. The Wareham Town Museum will be celebrating its 40th Birthday and have plans for new displays and events! The Wareham Rotary summarises their busy Christmas time. The Bere Regis Congregational Chapel has ‘Love in the Air’. The Talbot Village Trust supports Not Just Sundaes Community Café and the Rex Cinema has a great programme of films lined up. With many other articles too, it is time to relax, grab that cup of tea or coffee and have a read.

Notes from...

WarehamTown Museum Right in the centre of Wareham is an amazing museum, Wareham Town Museum, which tells the story of Wareham from prehistoric times up to the present day. This year Wareham Museum reaches the big 4-0! So it is a time for looking back as well as forward to new developments.

The museum was opened by Wareham Town Council in April 1974, on a site in St John’s Hill now occupied

by Hemsbach Court. The original collection was acquired from Harry Broughton, a former mayor of the town, who had used the front room of his house (The Manse in North Street) as a private museum since 1960. Wareham Pictorial Museum, as it was called, displayed pictures and objects relating to the history of the town and also to TE Lawrence ( Lawrence of Arabia), as well as stuffed birds and animals!

After ten years in St John’s Hill the museum moved to its present site in the Town Hall. The collection grew steadily, and in 1998, with Lottery funding, the museum expanded into a room previously used as the tourist information centre.

The museum has always been run by volunteers. We keep the museum open, six hours a day, six days a week, from April to October each year. Work behind the scenes goes on year-round. We have created a

website, www.wtm.org.uk, and audio visual presentations, and raised funds for new displays. There are lots of opportunities to get involved; email curator Louise Seymour-Smith on curator@wtm.org.uk if you are interested, or call in after we open on 4 April.

This year we have plans for various new displays, including Wareham in the First World War, and HMS Cattistock which was sponsored by Wareham in the Second World War. The Saxon sword, which belonged to a member of the royal family of Wessex, is returning on loan from the County Museum in Dorchester. There will also be a display on the history of the museum. Planning for your future care Throughout our busy lives, we make arrangements for life events such as getting married, having a baby or writing a will. But most of us will not have thought about planning our end of life care, or having these discussions with our loved ones so that they know what we would want. This would be particularly important if we were to go on to lose the ability to make decisions for ourselves.

At The Royal Bournemouth and Christchurch Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust we want to provide good end of life care for our patients. This might mean they spend their last days in their place of choice, comfortable, and with their families and friends.

For us to give good end of life care, we need to know about your wishes so that we can do our best to meet them. If you are able to make your wishes known, we will do our best to follow them wherever possible.

The Macmillan Unit at Christchurch Hospital offers specialist inpatient care to patients at the end of life, and support to their families. The team based at the Macmillan Unit also offer specialist advice 24 hours a day to help deal with problems in the community and in the acute hospital, which is where people are cared for through their final days.

Advance care planning involves talking to your family, friends and health professionals (GP, nurse or hospital doctor) about what is important to you, so that they are able to work with you to plan for what you want. This becomes particularly important if you later become less well and are unable to tell people your wishes.

You may want to talk about: • where you would want to be cared for - some people say that they would want to stay at home if they become less well. However, this may not be a realistic choice in some circumstances, for instance, if you live alone

• are there certain treatments that you would not want? Do you need to find out more about your options? Some treatments may cause more harm than good. For example, cardiopulmonary resuscitation on a frail elderly patient is rarely successful and frequently causes harm such as fractured ribs • your wishes and preferences - how do you prefer things? - would you rather have a side room or share a bay with others?

• do you like to sleep with the lights on? Is there anyone in particular that you would want to visit you?

• do you have religious beliefs that are important to you and that you would want to be considered if you were at the end of your life?

• who you would like to be consulted on your behalf if you were unable to make your own decisions?

• practical things, such as who would look after your pets • how to let people know your wishes Regardless of where you may spend your final days, good advance care planning is important so that others can take your wishes into consideration. It ensures that your preferences are known and gives you a degree of control.

At our hospitals there are a number of things we are doing to ensure that we can provide good end of life care and support to our patients and their families: • we have appointed a dedicated nurse to support patients at the end of life • all wards have an end of life care champion - a member of nursing staff with particular expertise • there are monthly teaching sessions open to all staff • the Macmillan Unit is providing advance care planning training for staff in the community The NHS in Dorset has produced an advance care planning guide to help you prepare for the future and assist with practical arrangements. Places to go

Jurassic Jaunt: Askerswell Walk Description: A 7Âź km/5 mile walk, great countryside tracks and coastal views, including along to Lyme Regis and Golden Cap, the highest point on the south coast of the UK and views way into the Dorset countryside.

Ascent: 195m. Estimated time: 2½ hours.

Start point: Askerswell village by the Church.

Grid Reference: SY 530 925. Post Code: DT2 9EJ. Directions: Leaving Bridport in an easterly direction, do not take the first left sign to Askerwell but go up the hill on the dual carriageway and take the next left after 1 km/ž mile.

Follow the road for 500m to meet the Junction with the triangular piece of grass and the Church is straight on after 100m.

Toilets: No toilets in the village. Toilets in Bridport at the bottom of the town or at the transport stop at the Eype turning off the Bridport Bypass.

Local information: A quaint village 4 miles east of Bridport, on Asker Brook, connected to the River Asker, it has a population of about 150. The registers of St Michael and All Saints church date from 1558.

Walk Directions: Walk down from the Church to the 3-way junction and turn left through the gate. Bear slightly left, straight up the hill for 100m to the stile in the fence. Continue along the fence for 150m to the next stile in the corner. Straight ahead for 60m to the gate, then straight ahead again for another 60m and up the steep bank to meet the main road. Over the stile and carefully cross the fast main road to the gate directly opposite. Go through the gate and onto the double gate (30m). Bear slightly left to pas to the right of the barn but left of the bushes ad proceed straight ahead for 300m. Here, look right to see the magnificent view along the coast to Lyme Regis and the flat top of Golden Cap. At the end of the bushes, drop down to the gate in the bottom right corner. Straight ahead through the gate for 250m to the next gate, straight ahead through that one and across the open field for 250m to meet the road. If you look sharp left here, you will see the path leading up to the Roman Fort you have just passed. Go straight across the first lane and 20m across the grass corner to the next lane. Turn left and walk 400m down the lane to Chilcombe Farm.

Just after the farm, turn right along the track for 50m then fork left 50m down to the gate. Turn right and head to the gate in the middle of the right hedge (130m). Go through the gate and straight ahead to the right corner (450m). Go through the gate and bear slightly left for 180m to the stile 30m left of the gate in the corner. Go over the stile and the next stile after 30m then turn right and follow the hedge around and down for 250 m to the gate in the bottom right corner, ignoring the stile after 80m.

Go through the gate onto the track for 100m to meet the entrance to the house then straight on for another 80m to find a stile in the fence on your left just before the next track on your right. Go over this stile and straight ahead for 100m down to the gate in the dip and straight ahead again to the gate in the left corner (120m). Straight ahead again for 130m to a stile in the far hedge, just left of the taller tree.

Over the double stile and bear slightly right to the left-hand gate of the 2. Through the gate, keeping the hedge to your right for 100m then straight on for another 80m to gate in the left corner. Straight ahead through the gate, over the small stream and follow the path around the edge of the woods to the left to meet the gate/road after 200m.

Turn right up the road for 500m past Higher Sturthill Farm to meet the sharp right-hand bend. Go straight ahead here over the stile for 40m to the gate. Then bear slightly right for 80m down to the gate in the hedge. Bear left here to the gap in the left hedge, keeping the telegraph poles to your right (130m).

Bear right for 170m to the gate and wooden bridge. Over the bridge, bear right but staying left of the house down to meet the road. This is a fast, busy road so cross carefully straight across to the stile. Straight ahead for 300m to the stile in the middle of the fence then straight on again for 140m down to the stile in the left hand corner. Straight ahead for 100m to the gate and road.

Turn left here for 40m and take the stile in the right hedge to the left of the barn. Straight ahead for 250m towards the cottages ahead and to the gate to meet the road. Turn right for 150m and at the junction, go straight ahead, through the gate. After 200m bear right of the barn. 40m after the barn, go left for 50m then turn right through the gate and head for 200m to the stile in the right corner. Walk for 150m towards the right corner of the cottage to the stile in the corner. Over the stile and turn right for 20m to meet the road.

Directly opposite the cottage, go over the stile and bear left for 170m up to the top left corner to meet the gate/road. Turn right along the road for 500m into Askerswell then right for 250m up the triangular piece of grass at the junction, turning left back to the Church.

Restaurant Review

Feast fit for... The Kings Arms!

Last month we were invited by Damian, manager of The Kings Arms at Stoborough, to sample their culinary delights.

Set at the gateway to the Isle of Purbeck, The Kings Arms is an historic village inn steeped in character and warmth. An inn has stood at this site for the last 400 years, and there is no sign of this tradition changing anytime soon. The building itself was once used as a butchers and you can still spy the old hooks hanging below the canopy.

Today, the inn serves pub food in a different sort of style - in a tempting mix of modern and traditional dishes created by experienced head chef Peter Harrison, who has previously worked at prestigious hotels and been awarded an AA rosette.

The Kings Arms in Stoborough is a dog friendly, family inn which draws locals and visitors from all over with its mix of contemporary and time-honoured elements.

The garden looks across the causeway to the River Frome and Wareham town beyond. Inside, the inn is a combination of a warm, country bar for those who wish to simply socialise over a drink or snack and a light, comfortable dining area for those looking for a relaxing meal.

As Martin was away, we were looking after his sons, Ryan and Sammy, so the five of us arrived and were warmly welcomed by Damian himself. He introduced us to Sam and Jan who took us to our table.

There are a range of menus to choose from - lighter bites, which includes baguettes and jacket potatoes, à la carte or a two course set menu. This makes for an ideal venue whether coming for a light lunch after a walk, romantic dinner for two or a large group.

The menus change weekly, so there is always something different to try!

The children were well catered for with their own selection to choose from, whilst Debbie and I had tougher decisions to make from the wide range of dishes available. In the end, Debbie went for the soup of the day, which was leek and potato, and I selected the homemade smoked haddock fish cakes. The soup was piping hot and packed with vegetables. The fish cakes were extremely tasty and complimented by the chilli and chive sour cream dip.

For our main courses, Debbie’s eyes lit up when she spotted the seafood casserole - coming from Hull, seafood has been a favourite from an early age!

I was intrigued by the sound of the venison sausages. Well, Debbie was not disappointed with the casserole!

A veritable menagerie of seafood, with salmon, swordfish, bream, tiger prawns and mussels were greeted with a big smile when it was placed in front of her.

The venison sausages were rich and full of flavour. Supplied by local butchers, B Curtis, these were the “specials”,

13 infused with cranberry and juniper berries, which added a extra dimension to the dish. The herby mash and gravy made with red wine and onion were a perfect accompaniment.

When it came to dessert, I could not resist going for the chocolate pyramid and Debbie was put under a spell by the ‘dark magic’ of the Tia Maria Crème Brulée. For cheese lovers, there is a wide selection to choose from and of course coffee for afters. We did get a very nice surprise with the coffee, which was some delicious hand made shortbread wafers!

The Kings Arms has been owned by Rod Lamont since 2000. It forms a small group of inns that includes The Kings Arms at Longham, near Ferndown, and The Saxon Arms at Stratton, near Dorchester. Damian, who first started

The Kings Arms gets a big thumbs up in the kitchen, has worked here since 2003. With Peter Harrison at the helm in the kitchen for the last six years, you can see that there is definitely a winning formula here.

Wareham Rotary: Christmas Work Wareham Rotary had a very busy time over Christmas...

Rotary’s Tree of Light

The Club erected a commemorative Christmas Tree, illuminated with hundreds of tiny ‘Lights of Remembrance’ in the grounds of Wareham Hospital during December, to allow locals to remember loved ones at Christmas-time whilst at the same time raising funds for Wareham Hospital and Macmillan Cancer Support. The club hopes to raise over £1000.

Children’s Tea party

The club organised their annual Christmas party for children with special needs. 55 children and their parents had a very enjoyable time. Apart from plenty of sandwiches and cakes they were also entertained by a magician plus plenty of singing and laughter.

Christmas Carol Float

The club travelled round Wareham Wool, Bere Regis, and Sandford in their special adapted vehicle playing carols and collecting donations for local charities and good causes. Father Christmas came along but since there was no snow he travelled on his mobility scooter. The club wishes to thank all those that donated and expects to raise over £2000 for local charities and good causes.

Shoe Box appeal

The club organised the annual shoe box appeal with the help of local schools and residents. The gift of a shoebox that contains toys, toiletries, educational items or household goods is a drop of happiness to the people of Eastern Europe who live in a world of poverty. For many, it will be the first present that they have ever received and it lets them know that somebody somewhere cares.

Pauline and John Matthews with the help of people from Wool Church and the members of Wool Club made up over 1000 shoe boxes, a fantastic effort. A lot of

Talking about Wildlife...

The Common Dormouse Despite its elusiveness, the common or hazel dormouse, with its fairy tale looks, is one of the most popular British mammals. It is famous for its penchant for a good sleep, and, being arboreal, spends most of its active time up in the tree canopy searching for food. Dormice are also nocturnal and hence even more difficult to spot.

The tiny dormouse’s round body is covered with golden coloured fur, and large black eyes are an indication of its nocturnal existence. The adults only grow up to 6 to 9 cm in length, with a slightly shorter bushy tail, and weigh from about 25 to 40 grams at their heaviest, right before hibernation. The hibernation period generally lasts from October to April or May, in a hibernation nest built on the ground.

This is a vulnerable time for the dormouse, and not all survive it. The dormouse diet mainly consists of nuts, berries, owers and pollen, as well as small insects.

Hazelnuts are of particular importance when they prepare for hibernation by building up body fat.

Dormouse is most often found in deciduous woodland with plenty of undergrowth, hazel coppice and thick hedgerows, and its current stronghold is in the southern counties of England and Wales. Once widespread in Britain, the dormouse population has decreased dramatically in the last 100 years, despite the fact that they have few natural predators. Dormice are extremely vulnerable to changes in habitat and the decline in numbers is mainly due to changes in woodland management and the resulting habitat loss. Today, dormice are a rare and endangered species. They are strictly protected by law and it is illegal to even handle one without a license.

Church members peak with charity donation Members of the Church of Scientology in Poole presented Lewis-Manning Hospice with a cheque following last year’s Welsh 3 Peaks challenge, which saw the group raise money for the charity by climbing to the summit of Wales’ highest 3 peaks in as many days.

wife had need of their help a few years ago. She had cancer and came to the hospice for some treatment briefly. That was in 2009. She did lose her battle, sadly, and passed away in 2010. So, from a personal point of view at least, supporting your work is something I am very willing to do.”

The very physical challenge saw the team complete all the routes and collectively raised over £1200 for the hospice, which supports over 650 local people living with cancer and other lifelimiting illnesses.

Martin adds, “Lewis Manning Hospice, through their work, are clearly an asset to us and often we need them for some harrowing times in life.

I can’t imagine a tougher job to do every day.”

The Poole branch undertake a challenge at least once a year for a local charity and this year picked Lewis-Manning for quite personal reasons.

Martin Budden, one of the group, explains, “We picked Lewis-Manning as they are known for what they do, and it is something that takes quite some courage. From my own point of view, my

Tastes so good...

PARSNIP QUICHE WITH BLUE CHEESE

This dish can be eaten hot or cold and it’s great for lunch boxes. You can use up leftover cooked veg from the Sunday roast instead of the freshly cooked parsnip. Sweet potato or carrot can be exchanged for the parsnip.

Ingredients: Shortcrust pastry: 100g salted butter 200g plain flour 4-5 tbps cold water Filing: 200g parsnip, peeled & sliced 1 shallot, diced 3 eggs 175ml crème fraiche 290ml milk 1/2 tsp mixed spice or korma curry powder 50g good blue cheese 50g ham or cooked bacon Diane Johnson

Equipment: 23cm / 9 inch buttered/greased loose bottomed flan dish. Rolling pin Method: Make the pastry by rubbing the butter into the flour until it resembles bread crumbs. Add sufficient water to bring the pastry together into a ball without it being sticky and leave to rest for half an hour covered in the fridge.

Cook the parsnip in boiling water until soft. Leave to cool. Fry off the shallot until soft. Set to one side to cool. Line a 9 inch greased flan dish with the rested pastry. Prick the bottom of the base gently with a fork to stop air bubbles forming. Bake blind (this will avoid the famous "soggy bottom"!) by crumpling baking parchment and placing it in the pastry case being careful not to tear the pastry. Then fill with ceramic baking beans spreading them out evenly. Cook at 450º F for 20 minutes until lightly brown and a little crisp.

Remove the paper and beans. Whilst the pastry case is cooking beat the eggs together and add the creme fraiche and milk, incorporating all together with a whisk. Puree or mash the parsnip with the spice or korma and gradually add to the egg mixture until thoroughly mixed. Once the pastry case has come out of the oven dot the base with the blue cheese, onion and ham. Pour the egg mixture into the pastry case and bake on 180ºC for 45 minutes, or until the centre doesn’t wobble.

It may be hard to believe but it was and as recently as the late 1980s! It may come as a surprise to newcomers to learn just how industrial the Isle of Purbeck really is, even now. Corfe Castle doesn’t look much like the grimy pit villages of Durham or South Yorkshire does it?

It wasn’t coal being mined here in Dorset. It was blue clay, often called “pipe clay”. Clay has been excavated in the Isle of Purbeck since the Bronze Age, but the industry really kicked off in the 17th Century when clay tobacco pipes became popular. The Purbeck clay was perfect for pipes, hence the name “pipe clay”.

Later, as tea drinking became fashionable, demand for fine china boomed and in 1760 the Pike brothers began quarrying clay in the Furzebrook area, near Wareham. Josiah Wedgewood discovered that mixing Purbeck pipe clay with china clay from Cornwall produced much finer crockery.

He made his fortune and the Purbeck industry prospered along with him.

The Purbeck clay was the key to Wedgewood’s success because when it is fired it comes out near white with properties that enable the potter to produce much thinner and more delicate ware.

Originally, clay was quarried, making an unsightly crater in the ground.

Underground mining was adopted in the 1960s as a less obtrusive method, although some mines had already existed for centuries. Today, none remain and all the clay comes from open quarries again.

Passers-by would never have known the mines were there, though they might have wondered where all the clay wagons were coming from! Many of their loads were bound for Spain by ship from Poole. There the clay is used in the manufacture of products like white sanitary ware, windscreen wiper blades, and garden hoses, pills and other pharmaceutical products: Plus fine china crockery of course, but fewer clay pipes now.

National Trust in Purbeck Purbeck has in international reputation for its rich natural habitats, but until now one area has been overlooked – its ancient and significant trees.

Highlights include rare survivors of Dutch elm disease and evidence of traditional land use methods stretching back to the middle ages.

While the heaths and grasslands have received plenty of attention from naturalists, their very importance has overshadowed its woodland treasures, said National Trust Ancient Trees Advisor Brian Muelaner.

It took a chance visit from a colleague, National Trust Head of Forestry Ray Hawes, to change that.

“I had been intending to visit Purbeck for some time, then Ray told me about a field maple wood he had seen and suggested I take a look,” said Brian.

The maples, in Studland Wood, near Old Harry, turned out to be the remains of a woodland grazing area in which trees were planted with enough space between them for livestock to feed, then pollarded as a sustainable source of timber for fuel and other uses.

“I only know of one other example of comparable quality and that piqued my interest,” said Brian.

Talbot Wood in South Purbeck revealed ancient oaks hiding among younger growth, and in the Corfe Valley he found a reminder of how the British landscape looked before Dutch elm disease swept the country in the 1970s.

A rare stand of around seven mature elms are thought to have a natural resistance to the beetle-borne plague and could provide seeds to allow the re-introduction of elms elsewhere.

This month, Brian is running the second of two training sessions for National Trust volunteers and staff who will be carrying out a comprehensive survey of significant trees in Purbeck as part of a nationwide audit of Trust land.

It will also form the basis of planning for future management – in some cases extending to detailed plans for individual trees.

The audit has so far identified around 28,000 important trees in England, Wales and Northern Ireland and Brian expects the Purbeck research to add significantly to the total.

“I realised Purbeck was a far more interesting site than I had previously thought,” said Brian.

“I was expecting the survey to come up with some tens of important trees, but now I think it will be hundreds.”

The Adventures of Nellie The Purbeck Publications Camper Van We had a real treat this month when Nellie, the rather large Purbeck Publications campervan, took us to see the amazing planes on display at The Solent Sky Aviation Museum in Southampton.

A very good neighbour of ours arrived on our doorstep one Saturday morning after reading about Nellie’s adventures at Compton Abbas. In that article I had said that Hayden, our ten year old son, keeps telling us he wants to be a pilot.

Martin, our neighbour, had won tickets to the Solent Sky Museum in a local raffle and very kindly offered us the tickets to take Hayden for a day out. Well Martin, I can tell you that I have never seen Hayden quite this excited! It is possible to sit in the cockpit of some of the planes and you can see the sheer delight in Hayden’s glinting eyes, as he holds the controls! He was literally in his element.

I wonder what he will be like after his real trip behind the controls and his first flying lesson? (Funnily enough that hasn’t been arranged yet. We don’t fancy being blown over to France in pouring rain!)

I have to admit that I am no expert at all when it come to planes, so Chris Smith, the Supervisor from the Solent Sky Museum, has provided us with some information which I thought you may find interesting.

It gives you an impression of just how important the south of Britain was to the aircraft industry – and how that heritage is quickly being lost and forgotten…

Here’s Chris: “The Solent region (which we define as roughly a diamond shape with corners at Bournemouth, Eastleigh, Portsmouth and Isle of Wight) was the centre of the world for aircraft development between about 1910 and 1960.

“There were 26 aeroplane companies locally, and they built everything from Spitfires to jet fighters, space rockets, hovercraft and helicopters. Solent Sky Museum has roughly 20 airframes representing these companies, including our recently completed Schneider Trophy exhibition, including the Supermarine

The Spitfire was designed and built just down the road from the museum. 22,000 were built during WWII, 8,000 of those in Southampton – even after the factory was bombed, production moved to carpenters’ workshops and bicycle shops. In the museum we have a Mk24 Spitfire – one of the very last to be built, and the fastest and most powerful of them all.

“The Sandringham flying boat represents the Empire Airways flying boats which flew from Southampton to the British Empire. Southampton was the world’s largest flying boat port, and the very word ‘airport’ comes from here. Built as a Sunderland bomber in 1943, our flying boat, ‘Beachcomber’, was modified to carry Chariot submarines and was later

converted to a passenger aircraft. She flew the world’s last scheduled flying boat service in 1974, making her the last of the great flying boats.

“We have two jet fighter cockpits – a Harrier jump jet and Supermarine Swift. Visitors are encouraged to strap themselves in, and then flick all the switches and pull all the levers while making jet-fighter soundeffects, thus fulfilling our EU requirement to have ‘interactive’ exhibits. Our jet fighter collection includes the world’s only jet-fighter-flying-boat, the Saunders-Roe SRA/1.”

Community café celebrates funding boost!

Customers, volunteers and trustees alike at Not Just Sundaes, Wareham’s very own community café, are all celebrating as news that funds have been secured to complete the final phase of the building project were announced. The Talbot Village Trust has donated £50,000 to the community project allowing them to finally improve the access for the disabled to the listed building.

The Talbot Village Trust is an EastDorset based charity which helps hundreds of organisations, charities, churches and schools by contributing around £800,000 to the local community each year. “Not Just Sundaes is an important asset to the community and we are pleased to be able to support this project,” said Gary Cox, clerk to the Trust.

Chair of the project, Andy Bowerman said, “This is fantastic news and is a great way to end an amazing fi rst year for the project. We would like to thank all those that have visited us at Not Just Sundaes and supported this new community venture in Wareham.

Whether through buying a coffee, making a cake, designing an icecream, popping in on a Friday night, fundraising, volunteering or just wishing us well, the community should be proud

that they have made the project the success it has become!”

Unfortunately the café will have to close for a couple of months in the New Year whilst the building work gets underway, but the project will not stop! With many volunteers still making all the necessary plans for our re-opening and official launch in the Spring, Not Just Sundaes will be proud to become a place that will truly be able to welcome all members of the community.

Double Value Concert!

Canzonetta and Ball & Socket perform in Swanage!

Ball & Socket and Canzonetta will provide an evening of sparkling musical entertainment on Saturday March 1st at 7.30pm at the new Emmanuel Church in Swanage, as part of Fairtrade Fortnight in Purbeck, supported by Purbeck District Council.

Canzonetta is well-known locally as a talented and popular ladies’ singing ensemble, with a wide repertoire, always guaranteed to please their audience. Ball & Socket also have an enthusiastic local following for their mix of Flanders and Swann songs and other material in similar vein. As a special treat the two groups will combine on several items, giving the evening not only a ladies’ choir and a gentlemen’s duo, but also a mixed singing group.

February Performances

Artsreach have two fantastic shows to tell you about this month!

First up, a treat for families during half-term. On the 20th February at Sturminster Marshall Memorial Hall, Valise Noire perform ‘The Girl and the Shoes’. This enchanting fairytale will transport you from the rural countryside of France to vibrant Paris, a world of glamour and beautiful shoes and a story of love, courage and understanding.

Drawing on the timeless classics such as The Wizard of Oz and Cinderella and combining visual arts, this unique show will capture imaginations by exploring what happens when you put on magical shoes. Suitable for ages 4+, call 01202 650213 for more information.

Then towards the end of the month, actress Alison Neil retells the story of Mary Anning from Lyme Regis is ‘The Fossil Lady from Lyme’. During a time when the accepted truths about the world were blown apart, Anning played a key part, discovering the first complete fossil of a prehistoric reptile in Great Britain - at the age of twelve. Throughout her life, she continued to make ground-breaking and spectacular discoveries and the entertaining tale of her life, her friendships, her struggle to make her mark (and put food on the table) is both amusing and moving. ‘Nan you must try it, quick. Quickly come and look.’

My grandson was so excited he couldn’t stand still. I let myself be led out from the cabin but I felt less certain that I was going to be as overjoyed as he was. Just as I expected, my daughter and her husband had been planning something big for my birthday. I looked up at it. How am I ever going to have the nerve to get inside it, let alone use it?

They were all standing there looking so pleased with themselves.

‘Well, what do you think?’ asked my daughter Rachel, with a great grin on her face, ‘we’ve sorted out the licence and everything.’

‘My goodness,’ I managed to say ‘you really shouldn’t have. I’m quite happy swimming around or taking the dinghy.’

‘Shall I give you a demo?’ put in Rachel’s husband. ‘It’s really quite easy, even you could…I mean, I didn’t mean to sound…’

We had all gathered on deck, and were staring at the first solarpowered, individual flyer that any of us had seen close up. Other affluent families had had them for a while but they had never landed near us.

‘It’s for you Nan,’ my grandson piped up again, ‘but dad said you might take us for a run with you…’ he added hopefully. There was a pause as I gathered my courage.

‘Well, this looks wonderful,’ I said, hoping I sounded more confident than I felt. ‘Let’s get started.’

Dubiously, I regarded the minute seating area and the footplate. The upright struts appeared so fine, so insubstantial.

‘Just pop up beside me and I’ll show you,’ encouraged my son-inlaw, David.

‘I’ll come, I’ll show Nan how to do it, Dad.’ put in little Newt. He must have been only about four or five at the time, and bursting to have a go. I was shamed into stepping onto the machine. It was much more straightforward than learning a whole new set of skills, like when I first used a computer. David hadn’t exaggerated. He showed me the lever for taking off and landing. The same mechanism was also used for change of direction.

It all seems so long ago, that first trip. I suppose we had been forced to take to the air, since the waters of the coastal regions had got so crowded. Just like the doom and gloom merchants had been warning us for years, the sea had risen. Large tracts of the earth are now buried below the waves. Everyone we know, lives on government sponsored houseboats.

The source of energy for the individual flyers, lffies for short, is controlled by turning solar panels on and off. The machines are surprisingly light. It is like travelling on a giant thistledown. It still leaves me speechless with its grace and utter peacefulness. What a wonderful sense of release to leave the motion of the waves behind, if only for a brief time. I still have the flexibility to land directly on the sea, as an inflatable dinghy can be directed to burst for the from the central pole, which acts as a mast and everything adjust to becoming part of an elegant boat, a miracle of design really.

As I look out of the porthole today, the sky is awash with these machines, but at least the inventor ensured that they are unable to move faster than a swimmer. My grandson, Newt, is ten now, and has just passed his test. He’s spinning overhead at this very moment. Round and round the boat he’s going, but this won’t keep him satisfied for long; soon he’ll want to be off across the seas to see if the rumours of rising land masses are really true.

Secretly I hope not. I remember the old world with noisy, fast cars, so dangerous - and you wouldn’t believe the cost of the fuel! Still all the roads would have to be re-built and the factories to make the cars. That old world is a long way off. Surely we wouldn’t be so foolish as to reinvent it.

‘Nan! Nan!’ ‘Yes, love.’

‘Did you see me? I’m getting so fast aren’t I?’ ‘Yes dear, very fast.’

Now is the time to go undercover

It’s still pretty chilly during February but planting seedlings under glass (or plastic) can give you a great start for the season ahead.

A bit of time and money invested now in a polytunnel or greenhouse will give you benefits for years to come.

Can’t wait for Spring to come? There’s plenty of vegetables that can be started off indoors now.

The days are getting a little longer, green shoots are starting to appear and we’re all just itching to get out in the garden now. Just one problem it’s still likely to be blooming cold!

With both greenhouses and polytunnels you need to remember that they can become very hot in the summer and ensure that adequate ventilation is available.

Extremes in weather are typical for this month so even if we do have a warmer spell I wouldn’t be in too much of a hurry to start sowing seeds outdoors. It’s at this time of year that having some undercover growing space is a real boon - not least because it’s so much more of a pleasure working in a protected environment, basking in the glory of those few rays of sun, than it is feeling a gale force wind that seems as it if’s come straight from the arctic! If you don’t have a greenhouse, polytunnel or cold frame then why not think about investing in one now? Get it built in February and you can get a head start on many plants for the season to come.

So, now that you have this great new space what can you plant in it? Early tomatoes can be started off in pots and if you plant some summer cabbages now you can get them established and benefit from a crop by late spring or early summer.

Cucumbers, beetroot, leeks and lettuces can also be sown indoors and if you want to try something a little more exotic why not plant some peppers, aubergines and even a melon?

Which is best? Consider the space available - if space is limited then a cold frame, may be a good option.

Green houses can offer lots of benefits but are generally not a great idea if your garden is also the kids play area and they can be hugely expensive. On the plus side, they are not easy to get rid of so if you’re prepared for a bit of work you may be able to pick up a second-hand one very cheaply providing you are happy to dismantle and move it yourself (try free cycle).

We opted for a polytunnel, which was very reasonable in price and gave us several weekends of entertainment building it. Follow the instructions carefully, don’t rush it and you’ll need at least 2 of you when it comes to putting the plastic on.

This is also a good month to think about soft fruit . Most fruit bushes, trees and canes need time to get established before you start to get a good yield and it is easy to overlook them in favour of crops that give a quicker return.

If you don’t have any fruit growing on your plot how about adding just one type of fruit each year? You could plant raspberry canes this month, or incorporate a gooseberry or blackcurrant bush into your border. If you have pot grown strawberries that have spent the winter indoors then place them outside as they will only flower after exposure to cold weather.

Plants that have over wintered outside can be brought in now.
