Rotary News
The Rotary Club of Wareham New Bike awarded to rider in the Rotary Dorset Bike ride for Cancer Research UK The Rotary Club of Wareham organised the first Rotary Dorset Bike ride for Cancer Research UK last year and raised over £19,000. Cyclexperience of Wareham kindly donated a new bike which was used in a prize draw for every rider that raised over £450 in sponsorship. Jane Weldon from Sturminster Newton won the bike and picked it up her won d er f ul b ra n d n ew b ik e f rom t h e Cyclexperience bike shop in Wareham. Jane who raised £1445 is a nurse at Wincanton Community hospital and says, “It was the first bike event I had entered and I really enjoyed it. Well organised and a great route around the lovely Purbeck countryside. I know lots of people so it was quite easy to ask for sponsorship. I am going to enter the race again on 1 September 2013 and this time, try to raise £2000. It’s a great cause and a wonderful experience.”

Ros Fry, Dorset Volunteer Manager for Cancer Research UK, commented, “We are so amazed at the success of the first Rotary Dorset Bike Ride. Over 300 riders took part and several, like Jane, raised over £500 in sponsorship. We are really grateful that the club have decided to run the event again. It’s really well organised and a very enjoyable day. This time, with the event starting in the Bovington tank museum, there will be plenty of fun for people supporting participants. We can make a great day out in our lovely Dorset countryside, whilst raising money for Cancer Research UK. Cancer Research UK has made enormous progress in the fight against cancer and continues to do so. However, we have only been able to do this thanks to the dedication and commitment of our volunteers and supporters without whom we would not be able to fund our vital research.”

'THE INWARD ISLE: A WRITER'S EDUCATION' Presentation by PAUL HYLAND 7.30pm Wed 6th March in Wareham Town Hall, Wareham Town Trust AGM A rare opportunity to hear author, Paul Hyland talk about the Isle of Purbeck. Paul is best known in Dorset for his book, 'Purbeck: The Ingrained Island' (Gollancz/ Dovecote). Four of his travel titles have been Books of the Year in UK or US broadsheets and two of his volumes of poetry have won awards. Much of his work has been broadcast on BBC radio. His highly-praised excursion into pure biography, 'Ralegh's Last Journey' (HarperCollins), revisits the last twenty weeks of Sir Walter Ralegh's extraordinary life. Paul's full-length 'Art of the Impossible' show, presented locally at Purbeck Art Weeks and Bridport Open Book Festival, combined poetry and traveller's tales with magic. He is a member of the Magic Circle as well as the Society of Authors! His talk will begin with the spell Purbeck cast on him and how it has repeatedly inspired him throughout his life. Jurassic Jaunt: Kimmeridge Quarry, Northern Route A pleasant 3-mile downland walk situated between the coastal path and the inner ridgeway. This walk is an up-and-back walk with a loop at the top. Some open fields and some shaded areas. Ideal for a casual walk with a picnic. No significant ascents or descents on this walk . How to get there: - Grid Reference; 918801. Turn right for Kimmeridge/Creech off the Wareham Bypass. Follow the road for about 4 miles, up onto the ridge and descend the other side. Turn right for Kimmeridge and after about a mile, just after a right hand bend, park in the quarry car park on the left . Information: Toilets There is a village shop with toilets in Kimmeridge about 1/2 mile further down the road, and about ¼ from the end of the walk . Walk details: As you leave the car park, turn right and follow the bend around to the left and after about 100 metres, cross the stile on the right-hand side of the road. Go straight ahead, down to the wooden railings and follow the Footpath sign (100 yards). At the gate, bear about 45 degrees left to a stile in the hedge (200 metres). Follow the path through the woods, over the wooden bridge and out into the field. As you enter the field, aim about 20 degrees right and w a l k t o t h e s t i l e ab o u t halfway along the right-hand hedge (1/4 mile).

After going over the 2 stiles in this hedgerow, bear 20 degrees left to a stile in the far hedge (200 metres). At the gateway, face the telegraph pole in the middle of the field and bear 30 degree left and head for the telegraph pole near the corner of the field (300 metres). Just to the left of the telegraph pole is a stile in the hedge. Cross this, go straight ahead, up some gravel steps and follow the path up to the gate at the road (200 metres). Turn left, and after about 30 metres, take the right-hand track, signposted ‘Ridgeway ¾ mile’. Follow this for about 300 metres until you reach the pathway. Turn left, proceed to the sharp right-hand bend but cross the stile in the left-hand corner (150 metres). This will take you back down to the road (400 metres). Turn left, follow the road back to the gate you exited from when coming onto the road (600 metres). Turn right and retrace your steps back to the quarry ). Kimmeridge Bay from the Eastern Ridgeway

would like to take the chance here to remind you of the lovely local pub that sits on the doorstep of the Purbecks. It is the Kings Arms just here in Stoborough. This local gem was lovingly refurbished last year. Although a lot of work has gone into keeping the Kings Arms special it hasn't lost it’s traditional character and local feel. And what a nice space to sit. We went along to get a feel of the Kings Arms, taking the children too. The food really speaks for itself but I will say a bit here to give a bit more of the idea. We had a great choice from the very professional menu. The “starters”, “grill”, “British favourites”, “pasta & salads”, “baguettes” and “jacket potatoes” gave more options than I could eat and the kids did great on “children’s/smaller appetite” menu. The servings clearly were not skimped on. You know how with some places the food can be quite light on the meat or more expensive ingredients, well, it wasn't the case here as the servings were “well stocked”, even the soup. As a general comment on the food, I spoke to Pete, the chef, and he gave some great pointers. It’s a new menu range and of course local produce. The menu changes weekly and the sweets are also homemade. Everything on the menu is gluten free where possible. If this is important to you while dining at the Kings Arms, please mention it or ask or options to ensure you enjoy your meal. People DO seem to enjoy it too as looking around there were plenty of customers and Damian, the manager, said the Kings Arms was doing well and has been busy continuously despite the financial climate.

Something to highlight is the offer of “2 courses for £12.95”. This is still running from Sunday evening to lunchtime Friday. The choice of courses is straight from the main menu which means, at £12.95, its virtually half price!! Taking all the choice into account try considering a great treat for Mothers Day! Overall I would rate the Kings Arms a great place eat, a great place to just pop by and a welcoming refreshment stop. If you are going further afield the Kings Arms has sister pubs too—the Saxon Arms at Stratton, Dorchester and the Kings Arms at Longham, near Ferndown. Gift vouchers are available that are valid at any of the three pubs. I hope this gives a bit of an insight into what’s on offer and how the Kings Arms is looking to heighten it’s good reputation. Photographic Competition to find a different view of the Jurassic Coast There are just a few weeks left to enter the Jurassic Coast photography competition and the chance of a stake in its £1800 prize fund. The 2013 Jurassic Coast Award photography competition is open to anyone who can lay their hands on a camera and recognise a different angle or view of the Jurassic Coast when they see one. The competition, which has a closing date of 25 February, celebrates the internationally recognised Dorset and East Devon Coast World Heritage Site (The Jurassic Coast), and is sponsored by the Fine Family Foundation and endorsed by the Jurassic Coast Trust. The award is an opportunity to capture the unique visual appeal of the coast and will be judged in three categories ‘My Special Place’, ‘A Point in Time’ and ‘Close up Coast’. Inspiration to get snapping can be seen on the BBC website where a gallery of images taken by the World Heritage Team has been published, follow the link from the Jurassic Coast Award page www.jurassiccoast.org/award. The judging panel is being led by photographers Ben Osborne, Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2007 and Joe Cornish one of Britain’s most celebrated landscape photographers. ‘Winter is one of the best times of the y ear for land scap e ph otograph y’, explained Ben Osborne, ‘The low light is especially good for images of the south-

facing Jurassic Coast. A dusting of snow is still a possibility and atmospheric conditions are always photogenic. One thing is for certain, if you want to be in with a chance to win you have to be out there with a camera’. The free-to-enter competition is open to all ages with a first prize of £500 to the adult winner and £250 for the youth category as well as runners up cash prizes. The competition is supported by Dorset Wildlife Trust with winning entries to be displayed on the BBC Photographic Gallery and at the Fine Foundation Chesil Beach Centre during Easter 2013. Woodlands Woodlands have always held a fascination for humans, and a visit to the woods refreshes the mind and lifts the spirit at any time of the year. British woodlands are wonderfully rich with wildlife; ranging from large mammals to the tiniest insects, and from bluebells to gigantic ancient trees, there are thousands of species to observe at all seasons. Native woodlands and what remains of ancient woodlands are the best habitats for biodiversity, and particularly important for many threatened species. Generally, areas with the best availability of light support the largest of variety of plant life, on which the animal kingdom depends to a great degree. Both native and non-native animals make the woods their primary home, and some woodland fauna such as dormice have all they need there; the canopy for shelter and hazelnuts for food (although dormice can also be found living in hedgerows, a sort of mini-woodland). Other species such as deer and many birds frequently venture into different habitats including heaths, grasslands and even our back gardens, sometimes moving from one habitat to another depending on their changing needs in different seasons. Woodland habitats are generally rich with insect life as well as nuts and seeds, and support a variety of birds from resident species like our mysterious owls, to seasonal migrants. Some are shy and elu si v e , b u t m an y w oo d l an d b i rd s including the tit and the finch families like human habitats as well, as our gardens can be similar to woodland edges or rides. Even more species will swell the garden population during harsh winters when food in the woods is scarce.
