Hello Wareham, Wool and Bere Regis! Yes it really is Panto time. Can you believe how this year has flown by? Stephen, Hayden and myself are off to Hull for Christmas this year to catch up with my family. It is quite a while since we have travelled up North for the festive season and I am really looking forward to seeing the extended family as well as my parents. For me that is what Christmas is all about. Mum and Dad have come down South for the past few years, but now Hayden is 9 we feel that Father Christmas wouldn’t mind dropping the presents off in Hull… If you are entertaining this year, then maybe you need some help in the home, to create the space you want. Why not give one of our loyal advertisers a call? From chimney sweeps to interior painting and decorating, to fitted wardrobes, to sorting the plumbing or the electrics out, why not buy some lovely pine furniture, or even build a new room? If you have a drains problem give BH Drains a call. Norden Farm Shop have Christmas trees for you at a great price and Swingletree Vintage have lovely china for you to hire to make that table look just fantastic. No washing up either! A great variety of talented and skilled people can help you, giving you time to do that all important shopping. Do take some time out for yourself too. Why not have a new hair cut, or treat yourself and your partner to a meal at The King’s Arms? There are many local events as well as other interesting articles for you to read and I think you will enjoy the poem on page 26! Our very own Martin Budden, who started this magazine over seven years ago, is having his own art’s exhibition in January at Upton Country Park, so do support him if you can. His art is quite stunning. Oh, and don’t forget the fun pages! Take a seat and have a cuppa. Whatever you do this Christmas I hope you have a great time and that you share it with friends or family. We here at The Wareham District Directory wish you All the Very Best for Christmas and the coming New Year. May it be a good one all round! Best Regards,

Debbie, Stephen and Martin

Talking about wildlife...

Winter Wildfowl Britain is an internationally important winter destination for millions of wildfowl who make their long way here from their breeding grounds in the north. They arrive here in search of a warmer climate with better feeding opportunities over the winter. December is an opportune time for bird watching in our coastal areas, wetlands and estuaries, where many of these avian visitors make their winter home. Red breasted mergansers, wigeons, many different kinds of geese and divers are all around in the wintertime for birdwatchers to enjoy. Some duck and goose species are gregarious outside their breeding season, and can be observed feeding in flocks of hundreds, whether diving ferociously for a fish dinner or grazing on vegetation. Wigeons are medium sized dabbling ducks with mainly reddish-brown and grey plumage. They arrive from Scandinavia and Russia and are present in Dorset in the winter, feeding on grass and aquatic plants. The red breasted merganser is a widespread member of the sawbill family, whose numbers peak around December, and they can be widely observed along the Dorset coast. They feed mainly on fish, and are strong, fast fliers. D i ver s a re l ar g e an d slender birds, three sp e ci es of w h i ch a re regularly seen in Britain; the great northern diver, which is the largest one, the black-throated diver

WDD December 2012 page 20

and the red-throated diver. They struggle to move about on land but are excellent swimmers, and fish is the main item on their menu. Look for them in Poole and Portland Harbours and offshore, including Studland Bay. The Fleet lagoon and Poole Harbour also provide great views of brent geese, a small, predominantly black goose that joins us for winter from its breeding grounds in Siberia. The migrant winter wildfowl’s main purpose for being here is to survive the winter and feed up in order to be able to breed again on their return home. Luckily for us, they grace our coastal areas throughout the winter, before heading home again in the spring to breed. Top places to see them include Dorset Wildlife Trust’s Fine Foundation Chesil Beach Centre, Portland Road, Weymouth (open daily) and Poole Harbour, including DWT’s nature reserve on Brownsea I s l a n d , o p en w ee k en d s f r o m 1 1 t h February plus DWT Members’ day on 9th December. Crawfords firm favourite for Feed Crawfords was originally established in 1999 and started out by supplying fresh f r ui t a nd v e ge ta bl e s to hote l s, restaurants and take-aways. This service is still going strong and you may well have seen one of their fleet of vans out and about. T he str e n gt h a nd v a l ue of the Crawfords brand has been built on the firm footing of a family run company that is deeply committed to quality, value and service. In June of 2012, Sara and David decided to broaden their range of services to also include feed for wild birds, poultry and small animals (such as rabbits, guinea pigs and hamsters). Bringing product suppliers such as Nature’s Feast, Peckish, Bucktons and Fancy Feed Company Ltd to the local area, they offer a free delivery service to any address with a BH postcode. According to the RSPB, “Although winter feeding benefits birds most, food shortages can occur at any time of the

year. By feeding year round, you'll give birds a better chance to survive periods of food shortage, whenever they may occur.” If you own poultry or small animals, there is a variety of feed available and since Sara and David have poultry of their own, some help and advice can be given. Since they started this venture, many people have asked about cat and dog food, which will also be soon in stock. There are plans to stock bedding for small animals and poultry in the not too distant future. Do look out for the excellent starter kit for bird feeding, which includes feeders, feed and a handy storage box — great value at just £10.99. Perfect for getting kids interested in wildlife in the garden or for primary and first schools that are keen to educate pupils in the wildlife to be found in the local area. So for all your wild bird, poultry or small animal feed needs, trust Crawfords!

PANTO TIME: SLEEPING BEAUTY BOURNEMOUTH PAVILION THEATRE SAT 8 DECEMBER 2012 – SUN 6 JANUARY 2013

Pantomime season returns to the Bournemouth Pavilion from Saturday 8 December as we welcome Sleeping Beauty. This year’s offering is once again brought to you by UK Productions following a record-breaking production of Jack and the Beanstalk last year. Returning to once again write, direct and star is venue favourite and Bournemouth resident Chris Jarvis as Happy Harry, whose local gags, rapport with the audience and range of impressions always go down a storm with adults and children alike. We’re also delighted to welcome back o n e o f t he be s t P a n to v i l l a i n s Bournemouth has seen in recent years, Su Pollard – last with us for the 2009 Panto season – as Carabosse. Also returning from the cast of Jack and the Beanstalk is Wave 105 presenter Kate Weston as Good Fairy. However, our all-star cast doesn’t end there, as they’re joined by Asa Elliott from ITV’s Benidorm as the Prince and of course, no Panto would be complete without a dame, with Nurse Nelly to be played by Colin Baker of Doctor Who fame.

Jurassic Jaunt: The Portland Round Area: Distance: Difficulty: Access Restrictions?

Portland 7.5 miles Easy No

An excellent 7.5 mile walk which takes in Portland Bill, the quarries, Verne Prison and give a variety of great views, including views over Weymouth Bay, Portland Harbour and a fantastic view along the Jurassic Coast to St Alban's/St Aldhelm's head. No ascents or descents of any significance. How to get there: Grid Reference; SY 680700. Go through Weymouth towards Portland, up through the bends onto Portland and at the first roundabout follow the signs for The Portland Spa and Southwell Business Park. After about 2 ½ miles, as you enter the Southwell Business Park, park near the entrance as this is where the walk starts and ends. There are various paths that cut back across Portland from the main path so this walk has great flexibility. Information:Toilets are available at Portland Bill (3/4 mile) and various other places along the walk. Walk details:Leave the car park entrance and just after the lay-bye on the right you will see a Footpath sign and follow this path along the side of the fence, onto the Coastal Path. At the end, turn left and head down to Portland Bill and Lighthouse, passing by one of the 2 old lighthouses and the Portland Bill Coastguard station. At the bill, left of the lighthouse, follow the stone marker indicator leading you towards Church Ope Cove. Follow the coastal path indicators through the old quarries which take you onto the road at one stage for 1/3 mile, to Church Ope Cove. Whilst on the road, you can walk on the grass verge on the right, past the Chain Weares car park and then follow the finger pointer on the right off the road section. After ascending from Church Ope Cove, the

path becomes a flat track but soon after, be careful to follow the yellow indicator on the stone which leads you left, up beside a small quarry rather than following the track. At the top, bear 90 degrees right, on the level, not back down the small track and stay on the level to Grove Point and Verne prison. Here, with great views across Weymouth Bay and Portland Harbour, you again meet the road and follow this around the prison. As you leave the entrance, follow the wooden indicators through the boulders and follow these signs (and no others) along the large flat track, past fenced off buildings to your right until you meet the tarmac road again. Stay on the road, past the High Angle Batteries, straight across at the junction until you meet car parks on your right. Follow the path to the right of the car park until you see the next Coastal Path sign. Follow the road to your right, passing the Cenotaph and other memorials on your right. Just in front of the Portland Heights Hotel, you will come to a sharp left hands bend, just before a roundabout. Follow the yellow arrow indicator to the right, down across the road and you are now on the west side of Portland. Follow the path along the west cliff until you see the Southwell Business Park on your left and Portland Bill straight ahead. Do not be tempted to go to the east of the Business Park but retrace your steps back along the south side of the fence and back into the car park. info@jurassicjaunts.co.uk 07790 474 478

News from the National Trust Last month we were fortunate enough to be joined by the whole of Purbeck School’s year nine to help us with the management of Middlebere Heath, between Wareham and Corfe Castle. The pupils were cutting gorse, an invasive plant, to encourage the regeneration of this very rare habitat for the protection of several of Dorset’s most threatened species, including the sand lizard, smooth snake and Dartford warbler. “I would just like to say a big thank you to every pupil and teacher who came out,” said West Purbeck Countryside Ranger Jim Cribb, who led the task. “Without schemes such as the guardianship partnership that exists between the National Trust and Purbeck School, we simply could not achieve the volume of work we have to carry out.” Speaking to the pupils, he added: “I hope that you all learned a little bit about heathland management and most importantly had fun being saved from the classroom! “This is now the fourth year the scheme has been running and, as ever, I was totally amazed by the

hard work put in and the sheer size of area we managed to get cleared. “From my point of view, I think it is extremely important to find out what lies on our doorstep in Purbeck and how lucky we are to live next to such a sensitive and beautiful site. I hope that you will all revisit the area and feel proud of what you have achieved. Well done Year Nine!” **** Ash dieback, the fungal disease threatening one of our best-loved native trees, has been making national headlines recently. Although cases confirmed in the UK have so far largely been confined to the east of England, we examined a sample of ash trees on National Trust land in Purbeck while they were still in leaf. Among the areas looked at was Acton, where planting of ash trees took place within the last five years. No evidence of ash dieback was found at any of the sites examined. Identifying the disease becomes much more difficult after the trees lose their leaves over the winter, however we will continue to monitor the situation. We will refer any suspected cases to the Food and Environment

On a national level, the Trust has welcomed the Government’s ban on the import of ash trees into the UK and called for more research into the disease. Although experts believe the risk of ash dieback being transmitted on clothing or by animals is small, the National Trust has produced advice for anyone using or visiting the countryside to help contain the spread of plant diseases.

Keep to marked paths – to help reduce the chances of picking up soil and plant debris (which could be carrying plant diseases) on footwear.

Pay attention to any site notices – infected or sensitive areas may be signed or cordoned off.

Clean your footwear – remove soil and plant debris from footwear after each visit.

Clean the tyres of bikes and vehicles – after off-roading, to remove soil and plant debris.

Avoid taking plants or cuttings – you could inadvertently introduce infected material or pests into your own garden or nearby countryside.

Monitor the health of your own plants. ****

Work on the first phase of Studland’s new wildflower meadow is now complete. Hardworking volunteers planted 800 plugs of native flowers in the meadow off Agglestone Road. Among the species planted were wild primrose and self heal, a plant with a long history of medicinal use. The flowers will now be monitored to see how well they establish themselves and a second phase of planting is due to take place in the Spring. It could take three years for the meadow to become fully established and further planting is planned. The work has been funded by donations in memory of the late Bill Burke, former secretary of the Bournemouth and Poole National Trust Association.

Charity News

44

Local adventurer Martin Budden teamed up with other members of the Church of Scientology in Poole to cycle around the Isle of Wight in a day to raise money for local charity Julia’s House.

This was the latest in a series of challenges organized by Martin and other Scientologists that have included cycle rides, abseils, hiking and mountain scrambling. All together these have raised approximately ÂŁ17,000 for various charities.

WDD December 2012 page 44

For this one, the 71 miles around the island was done successfully in July despite warm conditions & more than a few seemingly endless hills. Many thanks goes to all those people and businesses who sponsored the team, many of them being from the Poole, Wareham and Swanage areas.
