Merry Christmas Wareham, Wool & Bere Regis! I truly cannot believe that a whole year has passed by. Hayden, our son, had his 8th Birthday last week so we were extra busy with a family bowling trip to Tower Park, followed a few days later with a party at Snowtrax. Life is one big party at this age‌ I wonder why we change it? Maybe we should switch the TV off, forget the news, get the old fashion games out of the loft and actually talk to each other. Just an idea. Christmas is certainly a good time for families and we will definitely be playing board games as well as a few electronic ones to keep our youngest generation happy. I love it and I hope you do too. We have a full little magazine for you this month, so do take the time to look through. Wareham Community Events in 2012 – Big Plans! I recently attended a meeting to which many representatives of community organisations were invited. The meeting was held to try and pin down plans for the celebration of three events in Wareham in 2012: the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, the 250th Anniversary of the Great Fire of Wareham in 1762, and the Olympic Flame coming to Purbeck and, almost certainly, through Wareham. This meeting was also attended by the Mayor and Deputy Mayor. It was decided that, provisionally, a major sports/family fun day event to celebrate the Olympic opening day would be held on the Recreation Ground on Saturday 28th July, a Street Party event would be planned for the Town Centre area to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee on Monday 4th June (a Bank Holiday), and an event to commemorate the Great Fire would take place at the Quay, with fireworks, on Wednesday 25th July (organised by the Wareham Wednesdays group). At the Great Fire event, amongst other things, young people would be tasked to build mock ups of areas of the town from 1762, put them in a frame or frames and set fire to them, to be floated down the River Frome rather than risk another ‘Great Fire’, I am glad to report! These are all provisional plans, it is stressed, and at the time of writing I am due to attend another meeting of the new group – now called ‘Wareham Working Together 2012’ – on 7th December to firm up these plans and take it all one stage further. Watch this space! Remembrance Sunday Wareham residents turned out in force on Sunday 13th November to see the parade through the town to Lady St Mary Church and its return, following the church service, to the war memorial at St Martins Church for the laying of the many wreaths. The Mayor, Councillor Doreen Cleaton, laid a wreath on behalf of Wareham Town Council and the town. Organised by the Royal British Legion, whose 90th anniversary is celebrated this year, the event drew many comments of appreciation. This year, a contingent of immaculately turned out soldiers from Bovington Army Camp joined the procession and this gesture was greatly appreciated by all concerned. Town Council Christmas Reception/Volunteer of the Year The Council’s ‘Volunteer of the Year’ has now been chosen by a selection panel and at the time of writing plans are being made to present the award at the Council’s Christmas Reception on Friday 9th December. All will be revealed in next month’s ‘Directory!’ The annual reception is held principally to focus on the many unsung heroes of Wareham’s voluntary organisations who give so much to our community and ask for nothing in return,

and as many representatives as possible are invited along to the event. This year a ‘retiring heroine’ will also be honoured and will also be revealed in the January edition!
Christmas – Free Car Parking in Wareham Wareham Town Council, working in conjunction with the Wareham Chamber of Trade, has agreed that there will be free Christmas Week car parking in the Town Council’s Howards Lane car park, in common with other car parks in the town. This year’s dates are Wednesday 21st December, Thursday 22nd, Friday 23rd and Saturday 24th. Let’s hope we see lots of happy shoppers in Wareham helping our hard pressed retailers to boost their business and maintain the vitality and viability of Wareham Town Centre.

A big welcome awaits you at the friendly local—The Chequers Inn. My children and I went along to see the new faces and experience the lovely atmosphere of the Chequers and to try what turned out to be delicious food. To say there is plenty of room is an understatement, it being just about the roomiest pub I have ever been to. If you wanted to have an intimate family meal there is no need to be concerned about the presence of larger parties also enjoying themselves as there is room for all in different sections. This would of course be an ideal venue for a large party table. My son Ryan, 10, said it was “posh”, meaning, simply, it was one of the nicest pubs he had been to, with its atmosphere, friendliness and space. Sam, 5, liked all the “things” in the pub that he could look at and the staff he could chat to. The food was magnificent and the menu included dishes such as crayfish and prawn, venison stew, Thai red curry plus some of the usual pub favourites. There are some great touches with your meal; there is child sized cutlery for the junior customer and, for your meal, you can ask for more veg, etc at no extra cost.

God’s Christmas Presence I remember one wintry night a number of years ago now when I borrowed a mini car to travel from Saltcoats in Scotland to Rochdale in Lancashire. I was on a two week conference, but was anxious to spend the middle weekend with Janet – who was at home in Rochdale with the children. As I set out – first down the M74 and then onto the M6, the weather became increasingly worse and night was drawing in fast. By the time I was driving through the Lake District making the long haul up hill near to Shap the rain was sheeting down and the tiny unprotected engine of the mini could take it no longer. It began to misfire and splutter and slowed down to a crawl – a mile or so on it gave one last gasp and died on me – just in time for me to roll onto the hard shoulder. The mountain and hill top peaks loomed menacingly above me as I sat alone in the car now surrounded by almost pitch black. This was before the advent of mobile phones so I was well and truly stuffed! Cars and HGV’s thundered by, their lights ablaze seemingly unaware of the stricken mini – with its pathetic occupant quietly panicking inside! Surely this must be the most inhospitable place on earth! I don’t think I have ever felt such a sense of isolation and helplessness. Gathering my thoughts I remembered that I had passed a slip road about a mile back – maybe there would be signs of civilisation and help. So wrapping my self up against the wind and rain, and taking care to keep well on the inside of the hard shoulder, I began to walk back. After what seem like an age I reached the slip road, and still on the hard shoulder began to make my way towards what appeared to be a garage. Then the two beams of light shone straight at me! Was this an alien landing? Was I about to be abducted and whisked up to some distant galaxy? My overactive imagination collided with reality as a police officer walked towards me from his car with headlights full on. He looked startled! I realised I was wearing my clerical collar and it must have seemed strange to him on this wild and windswept night to see a totally bedraggled vicar walking off the Motorway! I was so glad to see this man of authority I could have hugged him. Naturally being British I refrained! But I was so glad that in my hour of need someone had come to my rescue. “Let’s see what we can do to sort you out, Reverend” he said in a northern accent, and ushered me into the warmth and shelter of the police car. After driving back to my car, he diagnosed my problem and, having obtained some WD40 returned to the car. Spraying this magic substance on the points and carburettor he encouraged me to switch on the ignition. A few turns and the little car burst into life! For good measure this motorway good Samaritan then gave me a police escort to the next service station before waving me on my journey home to the family. The mere physical presence of that police officer in my hour of need not only reassured me – he was able to actually able to do something to get me out of trouble and get me home! What has this to do with Christmas? Simply this. In our storm-tossed world we often experience a sense of helpless isolation. The Bible accurately describes our sinful human condition as ‘walking in darkness’ and ‘being lost’. We need an authoritative Person who can rescue us and provide a way to get us out of trouble and find our way home to God. We are fast approaching that time when we celebrate the incarnation – when God became flesh – and through His physical presence on earth dealt with the dreadful effects of sin – overcoming even death through the Cross. Sadly, for many people, the Christmas build-up and all that goes with it is a time of great stress and family tension. When we marginalise Jesus from the very heart of the season and replace Him with a greedy time of self-indulgence, Christmas becomes a bleak sham of a festival. Instead of finding great joy we often experience a sense of loss and anti-climax. Yet at this time of year, yet again, just like that kindly police officer, Jesus stands ready to assist. He alone can rescue us, get our lives back on track and not only point us but accompany us to a heavenly home. Why not join with us at the Chapel and find out the true joyful meaning of Christmas this year – you’ll be more than welcome! May you know His love and peace at this time of year.

In 2011 the Music Trust celebrates 30 years of dedicated work in education and encouragement of talented musicians to use their skills and artistry for the enrichment of worship. The Trust gives grants to assist those truly dedicated to music who, without help, might never be able to achieve their goals. Grants are made to organ scholars, lay clerks, singers, instrumentalists and cathedral choristers. Stories, such as this one from St. Georges Chapel in Windsor are commonplace: “Henry has progressed beautifully since I last wrote to you and sings solo in chapel on average once a fortnight. All this is culminating in a performance at the Royal Albert Hall before the Queen, for the British Legion of Remembrance. He is opening the evening with a solo of Pie Jesu. Many heartfelt thanks for your valued continued support of a chorister.”

The Purbeck Association of The National Trust “It’s all Greek to me”. Greece has been in the news a lot lately, and the news hasn’t been good as far as their economy is concerned. It was different for our members recently though, as we met for one of our themed meals – a Greek one. The staff at Norden House did us proud with three courses of traditional dishes. Jean Fernley, who organised the evening, even managed to get two members to try a session of Greek dancing after we’d eaten (see picture), much to the amusement of their wives. Events like this give members a chance to get to know each other, and it was good to see several of our newest members in attendance. We’ll be turning to traditional English fare over the winter months as we try something new with a series of hotpot lunches at the tearooms at Corfe Castle. Just in case you think our activities are all food-related, we continue with our monthly talks, and our regular outings to places of interest. Why not get more out of your own National Trust membership (or your status as a Trust Volunteer) by joining us? Our annual membership is great value at only £5, or £7.50 for a couple. He ends up having to climb a giant beanstalk into the clouds and a whole heap of trouble, to retrieve the cow and to try and impress the King. Jack is helped and hindered along the way by his less than bright brother Silly Billy played by CBeebies

Join Jack on his quest to defeat the evil Giant Blunderbore and his nasty henchman Fleshcreep played by Brian Capron (Coronation Street’s bad boy Richard Hillman), to win not only his fortune but also the hand of the Kings beautiful daughter. The whole production is complimented by lavish costumes and a sumptuous set and promises to be yet another spectacular success from producers UK Productions. This year six of the Wareham Ranger and Explorer Unit have been awarded the Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award and 4 have also achieved the Queen's Scout Award. They are looking forward to attending the award ceremonies at St James Palace and at Windsor. Six have also been awarded the Silver Duke of Edinborough Award this year. All have been involved in volunteering in the community, following a skill or interest, doing physical recreation regularly and taking part in a challenging expedition as a team. We always welcome any one who would like to take part in the D of E award scheme which is open to 14-25 year olds. It is a good way of recognising the positive and worthwhile activities that many of our young people take part in.
