Dear Wareham, Wool and Bere Regis!

Wow it is December! Surprisingly I am more ready this year than ever before which is very unusual for me. We had a lovely trip up North to visit the family for a Christening and I managed to get all of their presents and leave them up there! I can now concentrate on home and more immediate family. Santa told Hayden to write his list which I have to say I am a little worried about… XBox 360 etc. That is on top of the DSi he was given by Grandma for his Birthday last week. It isn’t how it used to be is it? Maybe you have a story of a past Christmas or New Year’s event? I remember my Mum telling me that her sister really did get a sack of coal one year for being so naughty and threw my Mum’s new pram down the stairs as a result.

Well it made sure I was good anyway! With regards to the magazine please use our local trades people to help you this Christmas, whether it is a new bathroom suite, a cleaner carpet, new blinds for the windows, a hair cut, your clothes dry cleaned, a meal out or many other things, The Wareham District Directory local business and trades people can help you. News from the National Trust On a bright and cold winter’s day there is nothing like getting out and about and enjoying all that the landscape of Purbeck has to offer. It therefore seems like a good time to tell you that the new winter events programme for Studland Beach is out and offers a wide range of activities if you like help a bit of help planning your outdoor adventure. From seasonal tastings and carol singing at Knoll Beach to winter solstice celebrations on Old Harry Rocks and a festive walk around Worth Matravers, there is something for everyone.

Equally you can join us in celebrating the festive season at Corfe Castle, with tree dressing on the first weekend in December and a chance to watch the winter solstice from the castle later on in the month.

You can find out more information on all these festive activities on our website at www.nationaltrust.org.uk or from one of our leaflets.

Over Christmas our open hours will be slightly different at both Corfe Castle and Knoll Beach. For your information Corfe Castle Shop, Tea Rooms and the Castle are all open as usual until Christmas Eve when they all close at 1pm. They are closed Christmas Day and Boxing Day and then back to opening daily 10am – 4pm. If you fancy welcoming in the New Year with a wander around the Castle we’ll be open on New Year’s Day but not until 11am. The tearoom will also be closed for its annual spring clean from 4th January and will open again on the 15th.

Whilst down at Knoll Beach the café and shop will be open on Christmas Eve from

10am – 2pm, closed on Christmas Day and then open on Boxing Day from 11ap – 4pm. From the 27th December onwards it will be open as normal from 10am – 4pm and then on New Year’s Eve it will be open from 10am – 2pm. New Year’s Day it will be open from 11am – 4pm, after which it will return to normal opening hours.

Some of you will be aware that this month sees us say a fond farewell to two members of staff, Pippa Russell (Visitor Services and Enterprise Manager for Corfe Castle) and Roland Hughes (Area Warden, East). They leave us with our very best wishes for their future plans and many thanks for all their hard work over the years.

Finally may I wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year from all of us at the National Trust. I hope that however you celebrate this festive season it is full of joy for you and those closest to you.

Suttle Projects Invests in New SFA Piling Rig Suttle Projects have recently invested in a ‘Klemm 708’ piling rig for drilling augered concrete piles. The piles are typically used to support buildings or retaining walls when excavating the ground.

The new piece of machinery enables the company to work on in-situ concrete pile projects for local companies, as well as working on specialist contracts for Network Rail. The piles are speedily installed and can cater for a variety of ground conditions – the machinery is also suitable for restricted access.

Managing Director, Joe Paine added: ‘We believe we’re the only company in the local area to offer this service. It’s the ideal piece of machinery for us as many

of the projects we work on have restricted access, are within confined areas or have other complexities. We’re specialists in providing solutions to difficult projects!’

The Mayor, Staff and all Town Councillors wish you a Merry Christmas and a Prosperous New Year Wareham Town Council Meeting 2nd November 2010 Dorset CCTV Partnership Group - the Council noted the formation of a new CCTV Partnership Group covering various public bodies/Police in Dorset and considered the Town Clerk’s recommendation that Wareham Town Council join the Partnership and be represented at future meetings. There were advantages for Wareham in that two new ANPR (automatic number plate recognition) cameras were likely to be installed to cover the highway routes on the A351 at North Causeway, subject to funding from the Community Safety Partnership and further discussions. It was resolved that the Town Clerk and Mayor will represent the Council on the new group.

Public Toilets in Wareham – it was reported that there was funding available for an upgrade of public toilets in Wareham, currently managed by Purbeck District Council, and a District committee would shortly be looking at the options available. It was resolved that the Town Clerk write to the District Council requesting that strong consideration be given to the provision of at least one high quality public toilet in Wareham, together with support for an urgent upgrade of the Howards Lane toilets.

Wareham Street Lighting Upgrade – the Town Clerk updated members on SSE Contracting’s response to several concerns raised by the Council at the previous meeting. Street lighting issues were discussed and the following points were made:

• grass verges had been left in a bad state of repair.

• contractors appeared to have little consideration for residents, some of whom had been unable to drive vehicles away from their properties due to works which had blocked their access.

• Councillor Budd had written to SSE Contracting after a resident of Mill Lane had complained about the lack of lighting in the vicinity of his property; however there had been no reply. Town Clerk had received a letter from residents of Mill Lane requesting extra street lighting and he would pursue the matter with the appropriate authorities.

• Wareham PACT had requested priority on new lighting on the edge of Hauses Field for community safety purposes.

It was decided that the Town Clerk write to SSE Contracting on behalf of the council outlining the issues that had been raised.

BMX Area, Hauses Field – following vandalism and closure, it was reported that this facility had been re-opened in time for half term. It was understood that the young culprits had been identified and the Council had agreed to a process of ‘restorative justice’. This involved a meeting to be set up by the Police between culprits and victim – hopefully the cost of repairs would be recouped during this process.

Christmas Reception/Volunteer of the Year – The Council’s Christmas Reception is scheduled to

11 take place on Friday 10th December, with invited guests representing many of Wareham’s voluntary organisations. At the time of writing the Volunteer of the Year Panel was due to meet, the award winner to be announced at the Reception (full details in next month’s feature). ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Wareham in Bloom Committee 17th November 2010 • Britain in Bloom Competition 2011 – The Chairman reported that, following consultation with Committee members, it had been decided to enter the Britain in Bloom Competition in 2011 following an invitation from the organisers. Britain in Bloom judges would make one unannounced visit during March, the main judging to take place in July or August.

• Roundabout at North Causeway – Enhancement/Sponsorship – Plans to enhance the roundabout for Wareham in Bloom were announced and it was reported that contact had been made with Dorset County Council, who had confirmed that there was no objection to any enhancement, providing it did not involve County Council funding and complied with traffic regulations. There was already interest from local sponsors, however if YOU wish to sponsor the roundabout, please let me know!

• Fundraising Sale/Photographic Competition – date confirmed as Saturday 29th January 2011 in the Corn Exchange, no theme for the competition this time, all entries to be considered.

The Royal British Legion Women’s Section to run a chocolate tombola and there will be a raffle, bric-a-brac stall and refreshments. We’ll see you there!

An ideal walk for the family. An easy 2 mile walk which takes you up onto Roillington Down and East Hill above Corfe Castle, giving great views over the village, Swanage Railway line and Poole Harbour.

How to get there: Grid Reference 960824; Coming from Wareham, park in the National Trust car park on the left just before entering the village.

Information:Toilets are available in the National Trust Visitor Centre.

Walk details:Turn left as you leave the car park and follow the road into the village. After ¼

mile, as the road turns sharp right up into the village, you need to take the left turn up the minor road to your left.

Follow this road for ¼ mile and just past the Challow car park on your left, as the road bears right, bear left through the gate and up the track.

This will lead you up to the radar mast on Rollington Hill (1/3 mile). Turn sharp left at this point and head back along the grass Ridgeway towards East Hill with Corfe Castle straight ahead and the village to your left.

After ½ mile, there will be a sign leading you down a short, steep path that will bring you out on the lane you entered previously. Turn right and right again and head back to the car park.

The Purbeck Association of The National Trust Lots of our members belong to other local groups as well as to us. One thing that we notice when we talk is that the recession is affecting most groups. Many people have less money to spend and are understandably pulling back from the more expensive events.

We‘re doing all we can as a group to keep our costs down, while still providing an interesting and (we hope) enjoyable range of activities. The cost of the Christmas lunch this month for example is only £1 more than it was in 2006. Our talks also remain excellent value at only £2 (including refreshments), or £2.50 if you’re not a member.

We’ve also tried to hold some lower cost events. Our enjoyable evening of skittles in October (see picture) only cost £8.50 including a meal, and our annual Fish & Chips Quiz is only £8, including the meal and a drink.

Christmas Unwrapped!

As we move ever closer to Christmas and the Advent Countdown Calendars wind down – what are our expectations? For some it’s just an excuse to over-indulge in every possible way – an escape from the harsh realities of these ‘austere’ times we seem to be going through. But that’s not likely to affect the seasonal tradition of giving and receiving presents.

Wouldn’t it be sad if we decided not to open any presents – to just let them gather dust in a cupboard somewhere. That’s a stupid idea I hear you say. But I want to suggest that there is one present we actually never get round to opening – the Gift of God’s love in Christ. When God sent His Son into the world and the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, He didn’t send Him gift-wrapped in a palacial setting. The baby was born, “ all meanly wrapped in swaddling cloths and lying in a manger”. And, much as today, His birth didn’t impact the little town community. Indeed the only people who were vaguely aware of His royal presence were some shepherds, and later some astronomers… oh and two Senior citizens by the name of Anna and Simeon! Not exactly a mega crowd!

And yet from that humble earthly beginning – God left his footprint on this planet that still challenges us today. Today the danger of missing out on God's gracious Gift is ever present as we try to swamp the season with all kinds of trivia! Have you unwrapped the Gift of God’s love in Jesus. It's got your name on the label! For God so loved the world that He gave His only Son – not just to be born, but a mere thirty odd years later to die on the cross in your place, paving a way back to God for you and me.

If you want to know more the real meaning of the birth of Jesus then come along to one of our special services this year. You’ll be more than welcome.

On behalf of us all here at the Chapel may we wish you a blessed Christmas and an inspirational and peaceful New Year!

Rotary Club of Wareham COME AND JOIN US IN OUR CHRISTMAS ACTIVITIES Items to consider for your diaries this Christmas: Firstly, as mentioned in the last edition of Wareham District Directory, we shall be holding our annual Tree of Light Service on Saturday 11th December at 7pm in the grounds of Wareham Hospital. The Wareham Town Band will be playing from 6.45pm.

Secondly, we shall be singing Carols Round the Christmas Tree on Friday 24th December at 6pm in the grounds of Hyde Place in Wool (opposite the station).

WAGGY TAILS RESCUE, is a registered charity based in Ferndown. They rescue and re-home dogs that have been abandoned, neglected or otherwise in need of a good home.

This Month’s Christmas Cracker is KIP Kip is a very pretty 11-month-old Papillion cross. He lived previously on board a canal barge, so is unused to house and traffic noises, so still quite nervous. He is very active, full of fun and loves people, but is a little wary of other dogs.

I know we ask this each year, but it is such an important message that we need to just say it one more time “PLEASE DON’T BUY A PUPPY FOR A CHRISTMAS PRESENT” All rescues get inundated with old dogs being handed in at this time of year to make way for the new puppy! Unbelievable, I know, but it really does happen!

Please give buying a dog serious consideration. (Most people spend more time deciding on which TV to buy!)

A dog can last for 15 or more years and one year’s food alone will cost about £500! Then there’s vaccinations, vet bills, insurance, worming and flea treatments etc that can amount to £20,000 throughout the dog’s life. So give it some serious thought, and, in the New Year, if you still want to go ahead, why not give a rescue dog a second chance of happiness? For more information phone us on 01202 875000!

Talking about wildlife with

Robins

Adorable in appearance and instantly recognisable by its orange-red breast and plump figure, the robin is a national favourite amongst our domestic birds.

Robins are traditionally associated with Christmas, and frequently depicted on Christmas cards and ornaments.

Despite their cute looks and friendly demeanour, robins are fiercely territorial with each other and rival species, defending their feeding and nesting areas with ferocity if necessary. The male and female hold separate territories until late December or January, when they pair up to construct their nest. Their songs are identical as well as their looks, with the red breast bordered by grey, and the back and w in g s b e i ng brow n. Th e youngsters are a less c o ns p i c uo u s d u ll b row n colour, without the red, until about 2 or 3 months of age.

Robins normally breed twice a year, starting in March, each brood consisting of 4 to 6 pale blue, speckled eggs.

Robins enjoy a vastly varied diet of small insects and worms, seeds, berries and fruits. They readily approach humans for food, sometimes even being tame enough to feed from the hand.

Robins are widely found year round everywhere in Britain in woodlands, parks and gardens, where their warbling

song can be heard throughout the day as well as night, but the robin in your garden may not be the same one all year round, as some British robins migrate south for winter and others arrive from continental Europe for our milder climate.

“Mattie Chitzmats” - By Glenn A. Hascall My next door neighbour was a prune.

I don’t mean any disrespect, but she really looked like a four-and-ahalf foot prune. I don’t have a picture of her but the two closest descriptions of her I can give is either a prune or ET’s grandmother.

I really am not trying to be disrespectful! I remember her in the fondest of terms.

We called her Granny. If she went by any other name I never knew it or have long since forgotten it. She kept mostly to herself and would often be seen with a walking stick in hand carrying her wrinkled body through neighbourhood alleys.

Her granddaughter (in her 70’s) spoke a little English and told us that Granny had come from Mexico in her late 70’s after her husband passed away and had stopped celebrating her birthday at 97 (which had been some years before I knew her).

Most people stayed away from Granny. Not only was she very old, but she didn’t speak English and wore a variety of tattered clothes.

over helped raise several generations of younguns’.

There would come a time when Granny would find herself alone.

And when she was, my mother would make a little extra at suppertime and my sister I would take it over to Granny’s house.

Granny would never come to the door although she might occasionally pull back a curtain and peer through the window at us, her eyes partially hidden by the flowing wrinkles on her face.

So we learned to leave the meal on her doorstep and knock. Once we were a safe distance away we would see her hand reach outside the door and the plate and its contents would disappear inside.

The next morning we would hear a knock on our front door, by the time we got there Granny was gone, but she left behind a clean plate with a stack of homemade tortillas still warm from the pan.

Soon it became a neighbourly ritual; we would supply her supper and she made sure we were never without fresh tortillas. Granny would never let us actually thank her or even talk to her, but she

43 understood what my family was doing and she appreciated it and even without words she let us know of her gratitude.

One Christmas, after we had read Luke, chapter two, opened presents and were enjoying the holiday, I heard the doorbell ring. I didn’t suspect Granny because she always knocked.

When I reached the front door I had to look down and I saw a short, toothless, wrinkled lady grinning from ear to ear. She held out a plate of Christmas Tamales and said, “Mattie Chitzmats”.

I was so startled to hear Granny speak that her very broken English words didn’t register right away.

By the time I realized that she had personally wished my family a Merry Christmas she was backing away, waving and grinning.

This beautiful, wonderful, toothless prune of a granny had shared Christmas cheer with my family.

As I recall those were the only two words I ever heard Granny say, but her life spoke volumes. And in that moment of Christmas cheer I came to realize the arrival of our Saviour Jesus Christ continues to leave a lasting impression on

regular people.

He didn’t come just for those of us who speak English. He didn’t come just for those who attend church in their very best clothing. He didn’t come just for those who had a particular colour of skin. He didn’t even come just for those who were wrinkle-free.

He came for me. He came for you.

And He came for Granny.

A smooth skinned baby and a wrinkled old woman. This, my friends, is the story of a Christmas past and the best Christmas present.

New chair makes for easier bath times A new state of the art bath chair has been donated to Wareham Hospital thanks to the fund raising efforts of the local Round Table.

Presented by Round Table Community Services Liaison Officer Anthony Muraro, the £3500 chair will enable patients with mobility problems to enjoy having a bath.

Thank You To everyone who supported our Go Green for Pudsey Children in Need Appeal coffee morning last month more details will appear in the new year.

Pop In Place regular groups are as follows: Healthy Eating Support Group will start up again next year on a Monday Morning from10.30 For the small fee of £1 you will be weighed and offered a food diary.

Poppets Baby and Toddler Group meets Thursday’s in term time 1.30 until 3pm at lower Drax Hall New people always welcome, as the School term starts this group will meet again at the Lower Drax Hall in North Street phone Trish White 01929 472418 for details, all most welcome.

The Pop In Sessions on a Monday and Friday morning 10 until 12 at the Lower Drax Hall All new comers are very welcome, Pop In for a coffee and a chat. We also take donations of good quality clothing, bric a brac and books, these are sold during the mornings to help fund our rental cost. Donations would be most welcome and a great help to our running costs.

Could you be a Volunteer ?…… Have you ever thought of helping out in your own community New Volunteers are always welcome if you could spare a couple of hours on a Monday or a Friday to help to serve the teas once in while, I would love to hear from you, please ring me for a chat.

Pop In Place Performers Group Meets Thursday Evenings 6pm until 8pm except the 2nd Thursday The Pop In Performers group is now working towards staging Aladdin on Friday 25th February and Saturday 26th February please note the new 2011 dates for this, rehearsals are well underway and the group is unable to intake anymore performers until after this production.
