News from Westminster One of the great things about being a Member of Parliament is the number of different people that I am able to meet. Every week I meet representatives from charities and businesses in Parliament, local residents in the constituency, and young people from schools and colleges. Looking back over the last few months gives a good feel for the range of these different and important issues. In Parliament I have been able to chat to several school groups who have been to visit from Dorset. I have also recently been to visit preschools and schools in Upton, Wareham, Merley & Bearwood and Canford Heath. Sometimes this is to lead an assembly, or possibly be questioned by pupils or chat to the staff about the development of the school. It is always an incredible privilege to get the chance to chat to young people, and find out about the issues that they want to raise with me. Their questions are always direct, challenging and to the point! I have also met with members of the Youth Summit in Parliament, and Dorset apprentices at a Parliamentary event. I was delighted to be able to talk about the importance of Science and Technology education at the opening of the Poole Maritime Festival. In London I was pleased to be able to invite a Dorset head teacher to a reception celebrating our teachers in 10 Downing Street with the Prime Minister. In addition, I have been to meetings with charities and interest groups, including Christian Aid, a group promoting the art of persecuted Yazidi women, social justice groups, and more local groups such as Wimborne War on Waste and the Scouts. I have been to visit the local Citizens’ Advice in Wareham, and opened a new garden at Forest Hill nursing home. Of course, my regular surgeries right across the constituency have continued with surgeries in Wimborne, Wareham and Upton, and street surgeries in Broadstone and Bearwood as well. I am also planning further street surgeries, for example in Canford Heath, for people to be able

to stop and say hello. The summer always provides many opportunities for more informal chats at fetes and events - and thank you to everyone who has stopped me to say hello, and let me know your views about a wide range of views. I was very pleased to have been invited to the Corfe Mullen carnival, the Wimborne folk festival, the Indian Mela in Poole, Morden Village fair, and St Mary’s Church flower festival in Lytchett Matravers, amongst others. Please do continue to invite me to these events, always giving me as much notice as possible! I am very much looking forward to the summer and a break with my family, before volunteering on a Christian Youth camp in August. I will then be working again in the constituency – and so do please look out for me and stop me for a chat! Notes from...

WarehamTown Museum This photo shows East Street, Wareham, with a big hole on the north side! It was taken in 1966 when the town hall annexe was about to be built on the site of the Three Tuns pub. The annexe was built as office accommodation for the then Wareham Borough Council (which became Wareham Town Council in 1974). On the other side of the street the former almshouses, built to care for “six ancient men and five women” can be seen in a rather shabby state. These had been built in the eighteenth century by the charity endowed by John Streche in 1418, exactly 600 years ago and still going! New almshouses were built in 1908 on Worgret Road. It is now 20 years since Wareham Museum was laid out in its present form in the town hall annexe. It expanded from one room at the far end into two rooms, taking over what

had at one time been the Tourist Information Centre. Wareham Town Council first opened the museum in 1974 in premises on St John’s Hill, and the museum moved to the town hall ten years later. Wareham Town Museum tells the story of the Wareham area from prehistoric times to the present day. The star exhibit this season is the Wareham Saxon sword, on loan from the Dorset County Museum. New main ring attraction at this year’s Dorset County Show With just a few months to go until this year’s Dorset County Show, the organisers have revealed the new main ring attraction for 2018. Organised by Dorchester Agricultural Society, the show will take place from Saturday September 1 to Sunday September 2, at the Dorchester Showground. The two-day annual show attracts more than 60,000 people each year since it began in 1840, and boasts a variety of attractions, livestock, and fun for all the family. This year’s main ring attraction will be camel racing provided by Joseph’s Amazing Camels, which have been featured on Countryfile and also have been the stars of many advertising campaigns including the British airline easyJet. This is the first time camel racing has taken place at the show and is definitely not to be missed. Also new for 2018 is The Fabulous Food & Farming Education Area which will provide visitors with everything they need to know about the important role farming plays in our everyday lives. Information will also be shared on where our food comes from before it is sold in the supermarkets. Throughout the weekend competitive classes will be taking place for more than 20 different types of cattle, over 30 different types of sheep, goats and pigs, as well as in homecraft, horticulture and sheep shearing. Poultry, rabbits and alpacas will also be on show, with falconry displays, scurry racing and the Grand Parade of award-winning livestock will take place in the main ring. Food lovers will have an extensive range of hand-picked catering concessions to choose from, each specialising in a different type of cuisine, showcasing local food producers from all across Dorset. There will be more than 450 trade stands at the show during the weekend for those looking to support local suppliers. High-end

country items will also be found in the specialist ‘Shopping@theAvenue’ marquee. Will Hyde, show secretary, said: “Each year we work hard to ensure Dorset County Show continues to offer new attractions for our visitors, while still promoting excellence within agriculture. Marine Wildlife needs a wave of support At Dorset Wildlife Trust we know summer is Marine Conservation Zones are established under the Marine and Coastal Access Act (2009) and are crucial to the protection of some of our most rare and threatened marine wildlife. Currently, there are 50 MCZs in the country, with more urgently needed to complete the network of Marine Protected Areas in England. As part of the current MCZ proposals, six out of the 41 proposed sites in the third and ﬁnal tranche are in Dorset: Albert Field; Purbeck Coast; South of Portland; Southbourne Rough; Studland Bay and West of Wight-Barﬂeur. These cover a wide range of underwater landscapes and habitats, from deep, tideswept rocky cliffs to sheltered seagrass meadows. Wildlife found in or near these sites include: black bream, spiny seahorses and peacock’s tail seaweed. In 2013, three sites were designated as MCZ’s in Dorset: Chesil Beach & Stennis Ledges MCZ, South Dorset MCZ and Poole Rocks MCZ. Together, these areas represent an impressive and stunning range of submarine landscapes and habitats which are often less appreciated and more overlooked than their terrestrial counterparts.

However, the importance of not only the Dorset sites but all of those proposed to be included in the current tranche of MCZ, is huge. Due to the extent of the damage caused to our marine environments, time is now running out to reverse the significant losses already suffered, and increased protection is urgently needed. You can find out more about all 41 sites across England by visiting www. wildlifetrusts.org/mcz, and for more information about the proposal’s Dorset sites, please visit www.dorsetwildlifetrust. org.uk/mczs where you can also become a friend of the MCZ’s and get regular updates and information on the outcome of the public consultation for the third tranche. The Adventures of Nellie The Purbeck Publications Camper Van Many of us have come to enjoy Nellie’s exploits over the years, 5 good years in fact. Playful in her mature fun-loving way, always ready to go somewhere new and have a go. She would laugh at herself with her long black skirts to cover up her rather large thighs and a silver grin that would bring a smile to everyone’s face. Family fun, excursions, exploring and seeing the bright side of life have been her passion. I did say the journey was interesting at the end of last month, so are you ready? Driving back from Wales… Well, we had literally just passed the “Welcome to England” sign, travelling at a mere 20 miles an hour when there was a sudden bang. We lurched forward. I yelled. We were hit again. The young girl in the car behind Nellie failed to stop, she just kept going. I yelled for a second time. Nellie was badly hit and I knew instantly she would not be repaired. The girl’s car was totally ruined, the engine would not start at all. After the police came to help, Nellie limped to the nearest service station and unfortunately on the back of a truck Nellie was taken to the “old van’s home”. It was very sad. If I say anymore we will all cry, and that is not ‘our Nellie’. No, Nellie is not one to give up easily and she has a Grandson in Japan who is coming over to replace her fun and frolics here on the South Coast. Nellie will be keeping a close eye on him of course because from what I hear ‘Daichi, The Dashing Dude’ as he is known (and for good reason), is a bit of a handful. Despite his Japanese upbringing, he has somewhat of an ‘Italian’ persona and likes the lady cars. Being the personality he is, he is having a ‘makeover’ (can you believe

Nellie with the Cerne Abbas Giant it?) before he arrives here in Dorset. Goodness knows how we will cope, but I am sure we will manage somehow. It was Nellie’s idea and you know what these stubborn older ladies can be like! When we tried to argue we just saw ‘the look’ from those headlights and we decided it was best to let her be right. We are all for an easy life. Daichi, which means ‘first grandson’ in Japanese, is taking his time (there is a lot of makeover going on) and will be with us in a couple of months. In the meantime we will take a look back at Nellie’s Golden Years… It all started in 2013. Stephen’s old car had finally given up and I had this idea to get a campervan to help Stephen not only carry all of out thousands of magazines each month, but also give us some family fun with a good excuse to get out and about. Having a young, very active boy of nine at the time, and being a somewhat ‘older Mum’, having the van meant we could all enjoy a day out. After all, Nellie’s whistling kettle satisfied my more relaxed way of life and the outdoor life let Hayden run around to his heart’s content. Stephen had the

29 best of both worlds. It got both of them off the computer too! As soon as we bought Nellie, she attracted attention. Five years ago there were less van’s like her on our English roads and the dark glass, with her roof up, her long black skirts and her silver smile seemed to draw people in. They were curious. That’s what gave me the idea to characterise her and write about where she took us. It was all a bit of fun and would hopefully make others smile. Her very first trip in June ’13 was to Cerne Abbas to see the naked Giant on the hill. Knowing Nellie now, some may see why that might be, she was always a bit cheeky! One of our favourite trips was to the Isle of Wight. Mum, Dad my sister, her husband and the three of us all went in convoy. Nellie was so excited she got on the earlier ferry and left my sister and brother-in law in ‘Lady J’ standing, waving, on the quay! We all met up again and had a fabulous week exploring the whole island. Fishing for the boys and Liz Earle’s Beauty Salon for us girls. We came out smelling better than the boys did, Nellie will tell you! Another great stay was had at Norden Farm near Corfe Castle. Fields, the wonderful sounds of our English birds, fishing again, fish and chips in Swanage, a picnic by the River at Wareham, what more can you want? Nellie took us to Cornwall last summer where Hayden competed in

Nellie ‘unpacked’ ready for the beach the Surf Life Saving Championships (I did say he was active didn’ t I?) where we got thoroughly rained on and had to buy a new awning. Camping at it’s best…? Following that was a wedding in Hull, so Nellie was packed with wellies, wetsuits and surf boards, next to wedding outfits, dainty shoes and a fascinator! All good fun and just shows how versatile Nellie really was. Ever ready, with a big silvery grin, for any occasion. If you had a favourite story please let us know. Phone, write or email. You will nearly always get more flowers for longer if you can spend some time regularly ‘dead-heading’. That means removing faded flowers to stimulate the development of more flowers, and of new shoots on shrubs and roses.

The winner of the Hall & Woodhouse DLF Writing Prize is announced Local author, Philip Browne has been announced as the winner of the inaugural Hall & Woodhouse DLF Writing Prize. Philip’s non-fiction book, ‘The Unfortunate Captain Peirce and the Wreck of the Halsewell’ describes the tragic event in 1786 when a huge East India Company ship was wrecked on the Purbeck coast. Thanks to the efforts of local quarrymen a third of the crew were saved but more than 150 drowned, amongst them Captain Richard Peirce and his two teenage daughters. They were all bound for India. “I am genuinely surprised,” said Philip, a retired teacher who lives in Dorchester. “I’m also delighted that my win will hopefully bring the story of the Halsewell to more people’s attention. It surprises me that such a tragic local event is not more widely known. I spent four years researching the life of Captain Peirce up to that final voyage and discovered a remarkable man with an extraordinary career.” The judges for the prize were Sara O’Keeffe, executive editor of Atlantic Books and worldrenowned literary agent, Christopher Little. In choosing Philip’s book they called it, ‘A tremendously lively, thoughtful and well researched piece of historical non-fiction. It throws a spotlight (or should one say a searchlight) onto a vital element of local history and does so with bravura, vitality and a wonderful eye for historical detail. Captain Peirce came alive in this book, as did the social mores and maritime culture of the day. We felt immersed in the desperate fortunes of the Halsewell and felt for every man and woman on board. That, in itself, is an achievement.’ The award of £1,000 was announced by Kate Adie CBE at a packed event held at the Duchess of

Cornwall in Poundbury. Anthony Woodhouse, Managing Director of Hall & Woodhouse, said: “We are proud to have supported the first Dorchester Literary Festival Local Writing Prize. The competition showcases our local talent and promotes writers in Dorset and the south-west who deserve to have their work recognised by the whole country. Being rooted in the heart of Dorset, Hall & Woodhouse is committed to enriching the lives of its communities and it was fascinating to meet the authors behind the novels and support their talent in this way.”

Janet Gleeson, co-founder of the Festival, said: “Our inaugural prize has been an extremely memorable event with vast diversity shown with the 53 submissions. We are hugely grateful to Hall & Woodhouse for supporting the competition, as well as to Kate Adie and all the readers and judges who helped us select such a fascinating winner.” This year’s Festival is from 17th to 21st October. New cashless parking payment provider launches in Purbeck Drivers using their mobile phone to pay to park in car parks in Wareham, Swanage and Corfe Castle will need to register with a new service from the end of May 2018. JustPark will be running the service in Council-owned car parks from Tuesday 29 May 2018. The service had previously been provided by Phone and Pay so users of that service will need to register their details with JustPark at www. justpark.com Car park users will still be able to use cash if they prefer, but anyone wishing to pay via mobile will have the convenience of being cash-free, and extending their parking time without going back to their vehicle. Councillor Cherry Brooks, Economy and Infrastructure Portfolio Holder for Purbeck District Council, said: “This is about giving people a range of options, and using their mobile phone to pay for parking means they don’t need to worry about finding the right change for the car park machine. “As the parking time can be extended by using the mobile app or by text message, shoppers and visitors don’t need to race back to the car before their ticket runs out, giving them more time to enjoy the local shops and attractions in Corfe, Swanage and Wareham,” Anthony Eskinazi, founder and CEO

With these Mini Pizzas you really have the chance to make them your own. Cover them with tomato and cheese and then pick from any number of topping choices: Pineapple and ham, pepperoni or even chicken and sweetcorn. Alternatively create your own unique toppings.

Ingredients 450g strong white bread flour 2 tbsp. extra-virgin olive oil 7g sachet fast-action yeast 350ml warm water 2 tsp. salt

Equipment: Large bowl Oven: 240C, Gas Mark 9, 220C Method: In a large bowl, mix together the yeast, flour and 2 teaspoons of salt. Once this is all mixed together, create a well in the middle. In a separate jug, mix together the oil and the water and then pour into the bowl. Then, work the liquid into the flour mix to create the dough. Leave the bowl to one side for 15 minutes. Create a well-floured surface and put flour on your hands then begin to knead the dough. Do this for about 2 minutes until it is soft and even. Put the dough back in the bowl and cover it with oiled cling film. Leave it once again to one side (preferably in a warm place). When the dough has risen to double its size, heat the oven and place a baking sheet on a high shelf. Then dust another sheet with flour before splitting the dough into 8. Roll 3 balls thinly into circles and put them on the floured sheet. Use a thin layer of sauce on top with some seasoning and cheese of your choice. Bake for 12 minutes until golden then add fresh toppings of your choice and use the rest of the dough to create more!
