Folking good local beers As many festivals start to stock the bars with their ales, ciders and lagers for the ever-so thirsty revellers, not many would be able to say, hand on heart, that all their ales and draught products have been sourced locally. They might be able to find the odd real ale from their region, but when it comes to lager they invariably turn to Australia or Denmark for the fizzy stuff. Not so at Purbeck Folk Festival for this year all their ales, draught lagers and ciders come from within a 50-mile radius of the festival site in Langton Matravers, near Swanage. “This year we are working with a local brewery called Sunny Republic who are brewing their first batch of lager to be available at a festival,” says Michael Callaghan of Purbeck Folk Festival. “We are very much a real ale and cider-drinking bunch down at the Festival, but we still have a few who prefer fizzy lager to the cask ale.” This year though we are really pleased to be able to offer a local lager for the Festival. Sunny Republic Brewery is based in Winterborne Kingston and has an innovative approach to brewing. All their beers have a twist, but this a first in the brewing business and it is only fitting that the beer makes its Festival debut at is on its own doorstep.

Revellers at last year’s festival “We would have been well under 50 miles if it wasn’t for the fact that our regulars love the taste of Yeovil ales,” adds Michael. “I would fear a revolt if I tried to exclude the Yeovil boys and we have to go a little further afield to find our ciders, however Dorset is growing in reputation as a provider of apples. “We have a number of local cider providers, including some of the best draught cider I have ever tasted, that is being supplied by the Purbeck Cider Company situated just four miles from the Festival.” The Purbeck Folk Festival, now in its fifth year, takes place on August 23-25 at Langton Matravers near Swanage. Providing care where it’s needed “My physiotherapist, Carly Fricker, visits me at home for my rehabilitation following a stroke. Recovering and learning to get about again in my own surroundings, rather than in a hospital, is much better for me.” Michael Goulding “The whole home birth experience was just amazing. For us to be the sole focus of two highly experienced midwives - one looking after me and the other looking after the baby - was just so reassuring.” Serena and James Witt Michael Goulding and Serena and James Witt have both had very different experiences of receiving the care they needed at home, rather than in hospital. Michael Goulding recently suffered a stroke and was admitted to the Royal Bournemouth Hospital for eight days before being discharged. He was allocated a physiotherapist from the hospital’s 10-strong Stroke Early Supported Discharge Team. Since his stroke, Michael has been experiencing problems with his walking as well as sciatica pains in his back and legs. Following his discharge from hospital, as part of his rehabilitation, he has been receiving a mix of home-based musculosketal and neurological physiotherapy for at least 45 minutes every day. This programme of physiotherapy will take place for at least two weeks. He says: “I like receiving physio at home as it’s comfortable and convenient which I’m sure will help to aid a quick recovery. Having the therapist come to me in my own home is the biggest benefit, allowing me to rest as much as possible.” Serena and James Witt brought daughter Grace into the world at home, supported by Poole Hospital’s Eden home birth team. The five-strong team is dedicated to supporting home births, with their schedules geared around the women booked for home births and not hardand-fast rotas.

“Our midwife, Louise, was so confident and made us confident in our choice too,” said Serena. “The birth was everything we wanted it to be, with all our creature comforts and in our own surroundings.” Research shows that giving birth in a relaxed and calming environment is better for mum and baby, with benefits including a reduced need for pain relief. Care closer to home has been a focus for the NHS nationally for some time. When appropriate it can provide more flexible and accessible care for patients, resulting in a more personal experience. It also encourages greater independence with patients often thriving at home in more familiar surroundings. For some patients who are acutely unwell hospital is the right place to be. For some other patients who do not need acute hospital care, they will benefit more from care that is delivered much closer to home. No one wants to come in to hospital if they don’t need to so home care is much more appropriate. As a result, patients are more satisfied with the care they have received, have increased knowledge of their condition and therefore can often self-manage it better. Other examples where we are providing care where it’s needed include respiratory early discharge schemes, maternity and children’s services. Christchurch Hospital has seen an increase in the number of outpatient clinics, blood test and x-ray services provided, so that patients don’t have to travel to Bournemouth for their appointments. Ophthalmology (eyes) outpatient clinics have also recently started running at Blandford Hospital, following a request from a GP. The trusts recently launched their Informatics Strategy which sets out ambitious plans on how IT and technology will support delivering care where it’s needed. This includes phone clinics, telemedicine and phone apps. The proposed merger between Poole, the Royal Bournemouth and Christchurch hospitals will mean we can provide even more care where it’s needed, ultimately providing more personal care. Outpatient and day-case services will remain on all three sites. Merger allows us to combine staff rotas and provide more flexible working. Improving patient outcomes is a key health priority for the new foundation trust, if approved. The merger will also ensure we can sustain the services we provide and keep them local.

An excellent walk with great Ridgeway views, a walk through Kimmeridge village, a coastal walk past the ‘Nodding Donkey’ oil extraction site, the new Clavell’s Tower and finishes with a visit to Swyre Head, the highest point on the Purbeck Hills. How to get there: - Grid Reference; SY 943793. The walk starts at the car park at the entrance to Encombe Estate. Head up into Kingston by turning right just after Corfe Castle village and turn right at the sharp left-hand bend at the Scott Arms. Park in the car park at the end of the tarmac road after (2/3 mile). Information:- No toilets here but there are in Kimmeridge at the Clavell’s café/shop and at Kimmeridge Bay. Walk details:- As you leave the car park, do not go left through the entrance to Encombe House but carry on up the track.

Continue to bear left along the track and onto the grassy path until you go through the large metal gate and reach ridge the top of the Ridgeway. You are now at Heaven’s Gate and this is written on the small gate to your left. Turn right here and proceed along the Ridgeway until you drop down to the road (1 mile). Turn left here down to the junction (60 metres). Cross the road and over the stile with the finger post to the right and out along the Ridgeway. Just after the MOD gate, which restricts access when the Ranges are closed, bear left down the hill and follow the path down to meet the coast path. Turn left, through the gate, and follow the coast path, past the ‘Nodding Donkey’ oil extraction site and follow the path onto a large expanse of grass with Clavell’s Tower ahead Proceed to the right corner, along the path and past the toilets on your left to meet a tarmac road (250 metres). Turn right, down the road for 50 metres and then left, up the steps, following the finger signs for Chapman’s Pool. At the top you will pass the new Clavell’s Tower, moved 80 feet back from the cliff edge to avoid it falling into the sea. Follow the coast path for 1½ miles until meeting a stile to your left at Rope Lake Head. Go over this stile and head up to Swyre Head, taking take to keep left to follow the signs and not turn right along the track. This is quite a steep climb at the end but it is the last one and the views are worth it! You are now at Swyre Head. Proceed straight ahead towards the wall with the woods to the left and follow the path down to the car park (2/3 mile).

The Wareham Railway Crossing Proposed Pedestrian Footbridge: WAREHAM TOWN COUNCIL’S CONCERN FOR PUBLIC RIGHT OF WAY Following a constructive meeting on 26th July with representatives of Network Rail and Dorset County Council regarding a proposed pedestrian footbridge at the Wareham Railway Station rail crossing point, Wareham Town Council has concerns about a public right of way issue that formed part of these discussions. The Council has looked at Network Rail’s planning application for the footbridge and expressed apprehensions about the future of what is considered in Wareham to be a long standing public Right of Way across the present pedestrian crossing point - due to be closed on completion of the new facility. A ‘lease of access’ for 150 years across the new footbridge has been suggested by Network Rail as a way of easing this problem. Town Councillors present were minded to look favourably upon this, however discussions are continuing between Network Rail and South West Trains on this matter. The Mayor, Councillor Malcolm Russell, said: “It is noticeable that Dorset County Council - who currently lease the land

at the rail crossing point to Network Rail - is happy to spend £1/2 million as a contribution towards the building of the footbridge, however they appear less willing to allocate £10,000 per year for its future maintenance. This would guarantee this essential right of way for the public on termination of the County Council’s current lease to Network Rail. Discussions will continue, however, with a view to achieving the best result for the people of Wareham so that their right of way is safeguarded for future generations”.

The Adventures of Nellie The Purbeck Publications Camper Van This month Nellie, the Purbeck Publications Campervan took us to Winspit which is a disused quarry to the South of Worth Matravers. I have to admit that I was a little apprehensive at first, taking young children... It is actually an awe inspiring place! The views of the Purbeck coastline are magnificent. On a sunny day, as we had, with the cliffs, the sea and the sky, this would be great place to sit and write a book! The quarry is situated on the junction of the footpath from Worth Matravers with the South West Coast Path. We parked in the car park at Worth Matravers and walked down to the cliffs, through the village. It is about a 15-20 minute walk with glorious views. Winspit, I discovered, was worked as a quarry right up to the Second World War and was then taken over by the military. With the ready made ‘bunkers’ where the rocks had been

carved out of the cliffs, this must have been a great place for the soldiers to shelter as well as fire the guns at the enemy! There are certain areas now which are closed to the public, for our own safety, but there are still many caves and tunnels which you can explore if you are so inclined, as you can see opposite. It is certainly not for those who feel

claustrophobic! It is definitely very exciting for those who like the ‘feel’ of the past, and enjoy a place with a certain amount of ‘atmosphere’. The children loved it, finding sloworms too! We went with friends and at one point the children disappeared into the rock face and came out at the top of the cliff! After a magnificent picnic overlooking the rugged and beautiful Jurassic coastline, the children had a bathe in a rock pool near the sea. Such fun! Martin opted to dive straight into the sea as you can see here… We had a fantastic day and I do recommend it, but do be aware of the warning signs of potentially falling rocks, and oh yes… I heard there may

be aliens around! Winspit quarry was not only been featured in episodes of Blake’s 7, but was also filmed as “Skaro”, the home planet of the Daleks for Dr Who! A truly amazing place right here in Dorset. When we returned to the car, we even got treated to a chap landing his paraglider almost over our heads! Where will Nellie go next?
