There are also some great events coming up… with “The Southwest Over 50’s Lifestyle Show” which is happening on 18th April. There is a superb Kingston to Kimmeridge Jurassic Jaunt for those feeling fit and wanting to get out in the fresh air. Rex Cinema always has something interesting on and you can see what is coming up on page 22. Wareham Rotary has some news of forthcoming gatherings and there are many other Purbeck events listed on pages 28-29. There is a lot to see and do, in and around our beautiful town of Wareham! Rotary Club of Wareham ROTARY’S GLOBAL SWIMATHON The Rotary Club of Wareham raised over £1000 for Julia’s House and End Polio Now by organising a swimathon at Purbeck Sports Centre on 23rd February. The event was part of a Global Rotary swimathon organised across the world with 266 Rotary clubs in 43 countries and 6 continents taking part. Overall Rotary’s Swimathon 2013 has raised over £70,000 for End Polio Now. With the help of Rotary they are “that close” to eradicating Polio from the world. See picture opposite.
ROTARY’S DAFFODIL PARTY The club organised their annual daffodil party for 50 elderly locals with plenty of sandwiches and cakes plus a magician and singer to entertain. See picture below.
VICTORIA PENDLETON SUPPORTS THE ROTARY DORSET BIKE RIDE IN AID OF CANCER RESEARCH UK The Rotary club of Wareham is organising their second bike ride in aid of Cancer Research UK on 1st September starting from Bovington Tank Museum. Victoria Pendleton (the Olympic cyclist) has supported the event by signing a Cancer

Swimathon entrants Research UK T-Shirt. This very unique T-Shirt will go into a prize draw for every rider that raises more than £75 in sponsorship. In addition Cyclexperience of Wareham has donated a £400 bike and £150 in vouchers which will also be used in prize draws for those that raise sponsorship. The bike event is open to everybody and suitable for all the family including the harden cyclists with 60, 50, 30, 20 and 10 mile routes with an optional off road section for mountain bikes. A man of experience on the merger Robert Talbot, Poole Hospital’s Medical Director and experienced surgeon, explains how the proposed merger of the Royal Bournemouth and Christchurch Hospitals and Poole Hospital NHS foundation trusts will provide even better healthcare in Dorset. “Should the merger go ahead, we will not only sustain vital services for patients but provide even better care. There are increasing expectations for consultantled care, seven days a week, which are not sustainable on both sites. The merger will allow us to unify or centralise some services that we currently duplicate, while providing as muc h as we can on both sites so that patients don’t have to travel unnecessarily. “We want to provide the best emergency care to patients with urgent surgical problems, by giving the surgeons sufficient dedicated time, and the necessary support services, to treat patients with an acute surgical need at any time of day or night. There is good evidence that patients have a better outcome after some complex operations if their team carries out the procedure frequently.

Kingston - Kimmeridge, West Circular Route to include the Nodding Donkey Area: Kingston/Kimmeridge Distance: 7 miles Difficulty: Medium Access Restrictions? Yes - See Range Opening times link on: www.jurassicjaunts.co.uk An excellent walk with great Ridgeway views, a walk through Kimmeridge village, a coastal walk past the ‘Nodding Donkey’ oil extraction site, the new Clavell’s Tower and finishes with a visit to Swyre Head, the highest point on the Purbeck Hills. How to get there: - Grid Reference; SY 943793. The walk starts at the car park at the entrance to Encombe Estate. Head up into Kingston by turning right just after Corfe Castle village and turn right at the sharp left-hand bend at the Scott Arms. Park in the car park at the end of the tarmac road after (2/3 mile). Information:- No toilets here but there are in Kimmeridge at the Clavell’s café/shop and at Kimmeridge Bay. As you leave the car park, do not go left through the entrance to Encombe House but carry on up the track. Continue to bear left along the track and onto the grassy path until you go through the large metal gate and reach ridge the top of the Ridgeway. You are now at Heaven’s Gate and this is written on the small gate to your left. Turn right here and proceed along the Ridgeway until you drop down to the road (1 mile). Turn left here down to the junction (60 metres). Cross the road and over the stile with the finger post to the right and out along

the Ridgeway. Just after the MOD gate, which restricts access when the Ranges are closed, bear left down the hill and follow the path down to meet the coast path. Turn left, through the gate, and follow the coast path, past the ‘Nodding Donkey’ oil extraction site and follow the path onto a large expanse of grass with Clavell’s Tower ahead Proceed to the right corner, along the path and past the toilets on your left to meet a tarmac road (250 metres). Turn right, down the road for 50 metres and then left, up the steps, following the finger signs for Chapman’s Pool. At the top you will pass the new Clavell’s Tower, moved 80 feet back from the cliff edge to avoid it falling into the sea. Follow the coast path for 1 ½ miles until meeting a stile to your left at Rope Lake Head. Go over this stile and head up to Swyre Head, taking take to keep left to follow the signs and not turn right along the track. This is quite a steep climb at the end but it is the last one and the views are worth it! You are now at Swyre Head. Proceed straight ahead towards the wall with the woods to the left and follow the path down to the car park (2/3 mile). Jurassic Jaunts

Money may be a bit tight sometimes but that doesn’t mean that the fun has to stop. Indeed it can mean the complete opposite. Think of the times you’ve had in your life that have been great. Have they always been the ones that have involved money? Not necessarily. Read on for some simple ideas that you can do alone or with your friends and family that cost little or nothing but could bring a great deal of pleasure. Dig out some cards or board games. When did you last sit down and play draughts, or crib? Traditional games are just that - traditional because they stand the test of time. Google the rules if you don’t know how to play - there’s no excuse! Don your wellies, make a little flask of tea and go out for a good old stomp across the beach or if you’re not lucky enough to live near the coast, a local field or nature reserve. There are always places to walk. Get the wind through your hair and aim to be out for a good part of the day. You should sleep better at night too. Check out local galleries and museums. Often these are free and they can hold a good range of interesting exhibits. When the weather gets nicer, stick a tent up in your garden and ‘go camping’ for the night! Grab some pencils or paints and just draw for the pleasure of it. Even if the end result isn’t going to be put into the Tate just the act of putting pen (or brush) to paper is rather therapeutic.

Talking about Wildlife... Springtime on the heaths Springtime welcomes the appearance of many heathland species after the winter. Heathlands are a unique habitat for wildlife, and Dorset heaths rate amongst the best in Europe, providing a habitat year round for many rare and threatened species. The devastating fire on Upton Heath in 2011 destroyed thousands of animals, but thanks to the efforts of Dorset Wildlife Trust, local authorities, businesses and many volunteers, the heath is on way to recovery. To aid this, last year a small herd of Shetland and British White cattle were introduced to graze the heath, with the support of SITA Trust. Both bird watchers and reptile enthusiasts will find something on the heaths. Woodlarks, Dartford warblers and nightjars are all found there, happily flitting amongst heather and gorse. Be careful, though, as some will be building their nests on the ground in the early spring, so make sure to stay on designated paths and not disturb them. As the days get warmer, the reptiles emerge to bask in the sun. All six British reptiles – sand lizard, common lizard, smooth snake, adder, grass snake and slow worm - can be found on the Dorset heaths. Smooth snake and sand lizard are heath land specialists, not found in any other environment. The best time to see the shy sand lizard is April, when the males turn a beautiful emerald green, but only for a short period of

time. There is no shortage of denizens of the insect world, either. Both the exotic wasp spider and the green tiger beetle appear on the heathland scene in April. Heathlands are of significant environmental and historical value, but have become much reduced in the last few decades. To help preserve heaths and their vulnerable wildlife, please always make sure your dog is on a short lead between March and August.
