Hello Wareham, Wool & Bere Regis! What fantastic weather we have had. It is so good to be able to go out and about for walks easily. How many of you have had early barbecues also? That is a great excuse to get together with family and friends and chill out a bit. Love it! The only problem is the rain, we do need it, so do be a little bit more careful with the use of water. This month as always there are lots of trades people and services to help you around the house, in the garden and for you personally. We have many different categories from dentists to fencing, from chimney sweeps to prom dresses, from massage therapists to kitchens and many, many more. Hayden, our son did a wonderful power point presentation on the computer this week, all done by himself of The Resurrection. The power point and the story is something they have all been doing at school, and it was very touching. He is only 8 and I thought of what I could do at his age...it certainly wasn’t as much as that. The children learn so much these days don’t they. Leave us standing! Talking about wildlife with
Heard the cuckoo yet? The sound of the cuckoo’s song is a traditional sign of spring, announcing the arrival of warmer weather and longer days. The cuckoo has a firm place in British folklore, and is a cherished summer visitor from sub-Saharan Africa, arriving in Britain in late April or early May. It can be seen throughout the country in open woodland areas, and is most abundant in the south. The cuckoo’s summer stay with us is rather brief, though, as the adults head back south in July and August, followed by the juveniles about a month later. The cuckoo sound of the male’s song is instantly recognisable, but in flight, this medium sized, blue and grey bird can be mistaken for kestrel and sparrowhawk. Male and female are rather similar in appearance and the juveniles are brown. Apart from its song, the cuckoo is probably best known for being a brood parasite, as the female lays a single egg to be incubated in the nest of its chosen host species; reed warbler, dunnock or meadow pipit. The youngster, not to be outdone by its mother in the art of deception, ejects its ‘siblings’ as soon as it has hatched, thus securing the foster parents’ full attention at feeding times. The

cuckoos feed mostly on insects; caterpillars, beetles and ants. Bright coloured, hairy caterpillars are on the top of their list, as their digestive system is well adapted to tolerate them. The cuckoo is currently a red list species of conservation concern, its numbers having been in steep decline for over two decades. The reasons for the decline are currently being investigated, but there are believed to be multiple factors, such as a reduction in prey species, especially caterpillars, changes in the cuckoos’ habitats here and in Africa, and even climate change.

‘Discover Purbeck’ Information Centre is Launched The planned move of the Purbeck Information/Heritage Centre to the Public Library in South Street has finally happened. Re-named the ‘Discover Purbeck’ Information Centre’, it shares integrated ground floor reception facilities and was officially launched on 20th March by Councillor Hilary Cox, Dorset County Council’s member for community services, and Councillor Eric Osmond, Chairman of Purbeck District Council, before a gathering of representatives from the local community, customers, staff and council officials. The Mayor of Wareham, Councillor Doreen Cleaton, also attended on behalf of the people of Wareham and thanked all who had worked so hard in achieving the move. Councillor Mrs Cox said: “This is an excellent example of how our two councils, County and District, working together can provide a better service to both residents and visitors. While browsing for a book, people may now also be inspired to visit a local tourist attraction. Councillor Osmond added: “Early feedback from the local community is that it is a friendly, welcoming space and the improved access, especially for people with walking difficulties, has been welcomed.” I went along myself to view the new facilities and it is impressive, looking like it had always been there. Local MP to attend Annual Town Meeting - Wareham’s Annual Town Meeting, (not a Council meeting but a meeting of the parishioners i.e. electors of the town) hosted by the Town Council, takes place on Wednesday 11th April in the Corn Exchange. All Wareham Town electors are invited and may raise issues with the Town Council. This year’s guest speaker will be Annette Brooke, MP for Mid Dorset and North Poole, who will speak on ‘My Life in Parliament’ and be available to answer questions. This is likely to be a popular event and there is limited seating in the Corn exchange, so my advice is to get there early. Doors open 7.15pm for 7.30 pm.
Community Payback Services Presentation - at the 12th March Council meeting, a presentation was given by Tony Mason, Community Services Officer representing Community Payback Services (Dorset Probation). Over 400 offenders have been involved in Community Payback, with the service based in Wareham but working all over Dorset. Participants were involved with lunch clubs, cooking, serving, washing up, clearing up for the elderly, and general gardening/maintenance work, with charges just to cover costs. 76244.75 hours were worked by offenders last year and training was also provided for them e.g. food hygiene certificates/first aid courses. Reference was made to clearing the stream of litter and vegetation at the Town Council’s Hauses Field recently, an excellent job done by the team in a day at very reasonable cost.
Confirmation of Mayor-Elect, Nomination of Deputy Mayor-Elect – the Council has confirmed the Mayor-Elect as Councillor Keith Green and nominated the Deputy Mayor-Elect as Councillor Malcolm Russell. Both appointments will take effect from the new Civic year on 9th May 2012.

will return on loan to Wareham in April. A full size replica of the sword made by local blacksmith Roy Osmond of West Lulworth will be displayed alongside. This sword will be retained in the Museum following the original sword’s return to Dorchester in late August. On Friday 13th April at 7.30 pm, Lillian Ladle MBE, a member of the East Dorset Antiquarian Society, will give a talk entitled ‘’Home at Last – Wareham’s Saxon Sword and the Viking Invasions’ in the Corn Exchange. Admission free to public (donations welcome towards Museum running costs). A presentation will follow, together with the unveiling of the sword display in the Museum. Recipe: Rhubarb Crumble Puffs 5 Rhubarb sticks, cut into 3cm pieces 1 Tsp ground cinnamon 3 Tbsp plain flour, plus extra for dusting 5 Tbsp soft brown sugar 1/2 x 500g block puff pastry 3 Tbsp unsalted butter 50g Rolled oats 1. Pre-heat the oven to gas 6/200c/180c. 2. Line a baking sheet with baking paper. 3. Roll out the pastry on a floured surface to about 20x30cm, then cut into quarters and place on the sheet. 4. Rub together the remaining flour and butter until it resembles fine breadcrumbs then add the sugar and oats to make a rough crumble mixture. 5. Divide the rhubarb between the pastry quarters, leaving a 1cm rim. 6. Sprinkle the oat mixture over, then fold and pinch each corner to keep the filling in. Bake for 20-25 mins and serve warm.

Wednesday April 18th at 7.30 pm at Wareham Middle School Prof. David Hinton will give a talk ‘The Staffordshire Anglo-Saxon Hoard & its relevance to Wessex’ Discovered in 2009, this is the largest hoard of Anglo-Saxon metalwork found to date. The Purbeck Association of The National Trust As part of our activities, alongside our social events and talks, we arrange a series of coach trips (mainly in the summer) to places of interest. It’s always difficult to draw up a programme that gives something for everyone. We try to have a mix of National Trust properties (which of course have free entry for our members) and ones that are privately owned. We also try to have some places that are close by, with others that are a long journey. Sometimes it surprises us that people are keen to visit nearby places, but it’s a fact that we sometimes neglect the things on our own doorstep. In June this year we’ll be visiting Abbotsbury Swannery and the Subtropical Gardens (pictured). We’ve obviously chosen well, as the garden has just been named by the Historic Houses Association as their Garden Of The Year. Further afield we’ll be going to A La Ronde (a unique 16-sided house) and Knightshayes Court in Devon, and having a private tour of Cothay Manor in Somerset.
