Dear Neighbours, Wow, what a summer of events we have all had. Hasn’t it been great! We here at Dorset Publications and The West Moors Directory were part of the Drug Free World campaign where we sponsored 1000’s of Truth About Drugs booklets given out in Weymouth during the Olympics and also at the Bournemouth Carnival. You can see some of our photos inside. The Jive Aces, the UK’s Nu mb e r O n e s w i n g b an d , w e r e o u r f an t as t i c entertainment for the day!

There has also been the famous Bournemouth Air Festival, Great Dorset Steam Fair and the Dorset County Show. Not forgetting last, but by no means least, the completely awe-inspiring Paralympics! I think the summer has ended with a real celebration. Did you notice, as there was much less bad news expressed during the Olympics that the whole of Britain came alive. Maybe we can learn from that.

Anyway… Back to school for some now and back to work for the rest of us. Here in The West Moors Directory there are interesting articles to read and of course our local business and trade’s people all ready to help you. We had an ‘interesting’ journey back form Cornwall two weeks ago… after breaking down twice and taking 12 hours to get home, Hayden jumped out of the car whilst Stephen was getting some bread and milk from the local store. Very excitedly Hayden suddenly shouted, “Mummy Mummy get out of the car!” I had no idea why, he repeated so I jumped out of the car. Hayden grinning from ear to ear said, with his arms flung in the air, “Mummy Mummy smell the sweet fresh air of WEST MOORS!” “This is HOME!” he exclaimed. What an amazing way to end the day. I grinned from ear to ear too.

A trip down memory line...

Whether you've lived in West Moors for a few months or many years, it is certain that you've passed a small house next to the 'Tap and Railway' and probably given it little regard, other than perhaps to remark how it appears to be slightly 'askew' compared with the road - looking somehow 'out of place', dwarfed by surrounding newer buildings.

Now named 'Gatekeepers Cottage', when it was built it was 'S & D Lodge No. 19 dwarfed by modern developments Railway Crossing Lodge 19' and until the 1960s, there was a prominent 'No. 19' the Mannington & Uddens water-courses on the railway (and village)-facing wall of & along the rough track that would many the house. When the Southampton & years later become "Station Road", there Dorchester Railway opened their single was a smithy and a small school & line in 1847, they built 43 of these: associated chapel. Drug Free message at Bournemouth Carnival Stephen and I here at Dorset Publications, publishers of The West Moors Directory, were proud sponsors of the Drug Free World entry at th e Bou rn emou th Carnival.

5,000 “Truth About Drugs” booklets were given out in the streets by more than 25 enthusiastic and dedicated volunteers.

The Jive Aces, the UK’s No. One Swing Band who recently got into the semi finals of Britain’s Got Talent were our fantastic entertainment and we won first place for the best dressed float! Retirement of West Moors Singers’ Musical Director Our annual choir dinner this year was tinged with a little sadness as we said goodbye and thank you to our wonderful Musical Director and friend of 16 years Sue Oldrey.

Our spring concerts in May, which were made up of renditions from two of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s popular musicals ‘South Pacific’ and ‘Oklahoma’ followed by the much loved Gilbert and Sullivan’s ‘Iolanthe’ were Sue’s final productions for the Singers. Everyone who took part or was involved in one way or another was delighted with the outcome, and judging from the favourable comments and compliments that the choir received after the event, we can conclude that our efforts were a success, but we know that is largely due to Sue who showed her usual dedication, faithful commitment, ardent enthusiasm, positive encouragement and endless patience.

The West Moors Singers, which has now been in existence for over forty two years, will of course be continuing - under the direction of Mr Peter Coole who has a wealth of experience in teaching, singing, conducting and directing choirs and musical groups. We are looking forward to this new era and wait

expectantly for what Peter has in store for us!

THURSDAY 11th OCTOBER 7.30pm ST. MARY'S CHURCH, WEST MOORS This is an exhilarating concert featuring the Salvation Army Songsters. They are a large choir with a huge reputation and much in demand. They perform all over the region and also make many recordings.

The concert will include their thrilling music, show songs and popular hymns.

West Moors Lunch Club West Moors Lunch Club welcomes over 60’s to a cooked lunch every Wednesday in St Anthony of Padua’s Church H al l, Pine hur st Road . An afternoon of table games, carpet bowls and bingo follows the lunch and tea and cakes complete the day.
