Talking about Wildlife...
The Deceptive Cuttlefish The closest most people come to a cuttlefish is when their white ‘bones’ wash up on beaches after rough weather. These are the evolutionary remains of the animal’s shell, as cuttlefish are molluscs, relatives of the snails in your garden. Way back in the evolutionary past, their protective shell was internalised and then evolved into the cuttlefish bone, which is used to provide the animal with buoyancy in the sea. By regulating how much gas the bone contains they can move up or down in the water without having to expend energy on swimming. If you pick one up it feels light. Cuttlefish bones are not the only thing that makes this animal extraordinary. They are recognised as intelligent animals, indeed, research has shown that they can be more intelligent than cats and dogs. Capable of counting at an equivalent level as a 4 year old child, they can also solve puzzles, negotiate mazes and plan ahead. to get what they want – something that only a handful of species, including ourselves, are known to do. Cuttlefish communicate using the colours and patterns on their skin, which they can change instantaneously. This is especially used in courtship, when males compete for a female. Male cuttlefish have been filmed displaying female patterning on one side of their body (where a competing male can see it) whilst at the same time displaying to the female on their other side that he is an interested male. By deceiving the male cuttlefish into believing it is a female and therefore no threat, it avoids a physical battle, whilst at the same time giving the female his ‘come hither’ signals. While divers regularly encounter and interact with cuttlefish in our coastal waters, most people do not have the opportunity to meet these most interesting of animals. However at the Fine Foundation Wild Seas Centre in Kimmeridge Bay, Dorset Wildlife Trust had a baby cuttlefish in its aquarium. It is one that washed ashore as an egg and subsequently hatched in the aquarium where it grew rapidly ready for release last month. If you wish to visit, the Centre is open daily from 10.30am until 5pm from April to October. West Moors Lunch & Friendship Club The West Moors Lunch and Friendship club meets in St. Anthony‛s church hall every Wednesday from 11.00am until 3.30pm. We welcome anyone over the age of 60 living in West Moors. The first visit by Joanne Gray to the Club was very successful, Joanne sang a variety of songs from the 50‛s onwards; the Carpenters, the Beatles, Lulu etc. and songs from the shows. Coming up in October we have Music for Health with Ali and the singing of Paul Spencer. It is time for the club to start thinking about Christmas, we have a Christmas lunch and a special raffle on December 18th, our last club meeting before Christmas. We also need to decide on a theme for our Christmas tree which we will display with all the trees from other local clubs and societies in St Martins Church. It is well worth a visit to see them. Understanding Investments:
Pensions - The Saver’s Misunderstood Friend Over the years, changing government legislation has resulted in unnecessary pension complexity and when something becomes complicated, people often lose interest or stop attempting to understand. However, this can lead to a missed opportunity as the flexibility and tax advantages of pensions should be the cornerstone of a saver’s planning. Let’s reposition the argument: 1 - Would you be interested in an investment which offers an immediate return of between 25% and 82% (via tax relief and pre-charges)? 2 - Would you be interested in an investment which can grow tax free? 3 - Would you be interested in an investment which could offer some of the lowest investment management charges in the marketplace? 4 - Would you like to accumulate capital which is exempt from inheritance tax? 5 - Would you like to pass on your wealth tax free on your death (if you die pre-age 75. If post age 75 subject to the beneficiaries’ tax rates). I believe most people would answer yes to each of the 5 questions and pensions provide a positive response to each of the questions. In addition, in a company scheme the employer often contributes additional money on your behalf. So, what’s the catch? Complexity and lack of understanding are the biggest barriers, followed by the fact you cannot access capital or income until age 55 (expected to rise to 57 in 2028 in line with the state pension age increases and then remain 5 years below state pension age). In addition, income above a tax-free sum of 25% of the fund, is taxable at the saver’s income tax rate. But I don’t believe these should be seen as reasons not to utilise pensions as a cornerstone in saving for retirement. It could be argued that the fact one cannot access the funds until at least age 55 adds discipline
to saving, if done alongside other accessible savings. In my experience, with Howard Goodship the flexibilities granted in the 2015 Pensions Freedoms, it’s often possible to structure income withdrawals to at least minimise any tax on the income and at best negate it completely. For many clients, pension funds accumulated over the years can be their largest asset other than their home, and yet they don’t understand where the money is invested nor the amount they are being charged each year by the pension provider. This is a wasted opportunity. If you are working and saving for retirement or are already retired and have money invested in money purchase pension funds, I’d encourage you to contact your financial adviser and enquire about a review of your pensions and general saving or withdrawal strategy. If you aren’t in contact with your financial adviser or don’t have one, Stewart and I would be delighted to chat with you and identify how we might help. Ultimately, the less you pay in fees, the more tax you save and the better your investments perform should result in you either needing to save less or saving the same but being left with a bigger pot of money at the end. Going Green... Looking after our planet is essential. It has become more and more apparent that we need to care for our environment. With that in mind I took an honest look at how much plastic I use on a daily basis. What could I replace by an eco-friendly alternative? I have been amazed by what I saw. Toothpaste. Traditional toothpaste is not only stored in environmentally damaging plastic, but it contains chemicals which could be damaging to our own health too. The toothpaste opposite is natural and contained in glass, which can be reused. I chose to try the tea tree version. Known for its powerful healing properties, throughout history, Tea Tree leaves have been used to heal cuts, treat burns, and as a topical application for infections. This toothpaste is a paste-like clay, so it takes a little adjusting, but I have to say I have found it really good and much less harsh on my aging gums. The other alternative is the peppermint toothpaste tablets. With a more traditional flavour these would be ideal for when we are travelling. As they are not liquid, they will not take up any hand luggage space, in those little plastic bags either! Double bonus. Of course, I needed a plastic free
toothbrush to go with it, so the sustainable beechwood version opposite is perfect! There is a children’s one, soft bristles or medium. Suitable for all the family. Stephen, my husband has tried the shave bar recently and proudly showed me his silky-smooth skin after shaving the other day! He really likes this product, so we highly recommend it. Again, it is natural for the skin, no chemicals and it is in a plastic free container. A natural handmade shaving soap, for a traditional wet shave, so wave goodbye to harsh gels and foams, and say hello to a gently soothing and creamy lather. A winner to us. Stephen hasn’t tried the classic shave with the Bambaw’s stylish double edge safety razor yet. I may have to work on that one! On Your Plot Feeling Fruity
Few flavours compare with that of fruit freshly picked from the garden. Much of the fruit available in the shops (particularly the supermarkets) has been grown for it’s ability to travel well rather than it’s flavour and may have been picked well before it’s arrival on the shelf. If you fancy apples from your own tree, or a bowl of raspberries fresh from the garden, now is the time to act.
Jobs for November :-
• Start to harvest parsnips after the first frosts. • Tidy up your greenhouse or polytunnel, wash out pots and seed trays before storing ready for the Spring • Sow hardy peas or broad beans ready for an early crop next year. • Use netting or chicken wire to protect your broccoli and cabbages from hungry pigeons. • If you haven’t already done so, plant garlic and shallots. • If your rhubarb is taking over, lift and divide the crowns before replanting.
If you are anything like me you will spend ages drooling over pictures of bushes dripping with blackcurrants or gooseberries, trees laden with apples, or bowls full of luscious raspberries but struggle to get to grips with the realities of production on your own plot! Patience is a virtue that is definitely required for growing your own, and this is particularly so with fruit trees and bushes. I have to confess to having an inclination to move on with anything that requires more than a few months to give a decent crop, but with most fruit you just have to force yourself to take the long term view and now being the proud owner of a 2 year old gooseberry bush and raspberry canes I can assure you that the waiting is worthwhile! Think carefully about where you will grow your fruit. Trees require lots of space (but are a wonderfully attractive addition to your plot) while bushes may be incorporated in your borders, but will probably need some protection if you aren’t going to loose a lot of fruit to the birds.
Late autumn is an ideal time to add fruit to your plot as trees and bushes will be entering their dormant period. It is important to buy healthy plants and to ensure that they are dormant as they will transplant more successfully. If you are ordering from a reputable mail order nursery they are likely to arrange delivery to coincide with the best time for planting. You should also get instruction on how to plant and care for your new tree or bush. Trees such as apple or plum may be grafted onto a variety of different rootstocks - this sounds complicated but all you really need to know is what effect this will have on the final size of the tree. If you have limited space it is possible to buy dwarf varieties some of which can even be suitable for container growing. Pollination is also an important consideration, some varieties are self-fertile and do not need a pollinator, while others may require another variety planted close by to act as a pollinator. When planting your tree out it may benefit from staking and protection around the base. One ‘fruit’ that is a little different and very easy to grow is Rhubarb. Rhubarb is actually classified as a vegetable, but certainly tastes good used like a fruit in crumbles and pies. November is the perfect time to plant out dormant crowns. Although these can be bought from nurseries Rhubarb tends to spread well when established and needs to be divided every few years so it is often possible to obtain surplus crowns from friends or neighbours. Plant your crown with the buds just above the soil and water well the first year. Once the plants have become established you can look forward to harvesting a good crop of delicious pink stems from Spring onwards very welcome as the first ‘fruit’ of the year.

West Moors Flower Group
In October our demonstrator was Allison Finch and her title was “What a Sweetie”. She did her designs on some of the sweets we remembered from our childhood: Cadbury’s Flake, Love Hearts, Bounty to name a few. Her flowers were beautiful and her interpretation was very clever. In November our demonstrator is Martine Coleman and her title is “STRICTLY FLOWERS” and the competition is “Strictly Foliage”. Our meetings are held on the third Wednesday of every month at West Moors Memorial Hall at 10 am. We always give a warm welcome to new members and visitors. Tastes so good... CHICKEN PIE
This is a delicious recipe which is perfect for those chilly nights in. You can serve this with almost anything from chips or a healthier alternative or vegetables. And any excess pastry can be used as decoration on top.
Ingredients for 4 servings 4 tbsp. butter 1 tbsp. flour 200ml chicken stock 3 tbsp. double cream Sprig of tarragon Squeeze of lemon juice 1 handful button mushrooms (cut into quarters) 1 medium green pepper (sliced) 400g cooked chicken (shredded) 225g ready-made puff pastry 1 medium free-range egg (beaten)
Equipment: Saucepan (2), large oven proof dish Oven: Gas Mark 6, 200C Method: Melt half the butter in a saucepan before adding the flour. Cook on a low heat for 3 minutes. Pour in the chicken stock and turn up the heat and stir continuously until it is simmering. Then add in the cream and gently simmer until thickened. Next add the lemon juice and tarragon and switch off the heat. In a separate pan, fry the chicken with mushrooms and peppers with the rest of the butter. Once this is cooked add the sauce and mix together. Using the dish, pour in the chicken mixture. Then roll out the pastry onto a floured surface. Make sure it is flattened out until 1cm thick. Place the flattened pastry over the dish and cut off the excess around the sides. Cut a few holes into the top with a knife and brush the pastry with the beaten eggs. Bake in the oven for 25-35 minutes until the filling is hot and the top of browned. Serve and enjoy!
