We didn’t go camping last month, but Nellie did take us for a day out at Avon Heath Country Park. We went with a friend and his two boys on a bright crisp day. You can read all Debbie & Stephen Corney about it on pages 38 and with their son, Hayden 39. Fun was had by all! So, this is the month to start thinking about Christmas, planning who is going where, who to buy presents for and generally getting even busier than usual. Technology matters In 2012, the government set out a vision for the future of the NHS, promising a ‘paperless’ health service by 2018 and a greater choice of digital channels that offer patients increased choice in the way they access healthcare and manage their health records. Locally, Poole Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and The Royal Bournemouth and Christchurch Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (RBCH) are already taking significant steps towards embracing these challenges and achieving a paperless future. A new digital x-ray viewing system was successfully launched earlier this year across Poole, Bournemouth and Christchurch hospitals, and a new electronic document management system (EDMS) is set to be introduced in 2014. The new EDMS system will cut out the need for paper records to be transferred between local hospitals, meaning improved security of information and, crucially, fewer delays for patients. Dr Rupert Page is a consultant neurologist at Poole Hospital, and explains the difference that improved IT will make: “Our focus is providing high quality, safe clinical care. The key to this is current and complete information wherever that care is being provided. Effective IT support is crucial to meet the increasingly varied ways in which we need to deliver this care and ensure quality. Clinicians are engaged at the heart of the strategy that we are evolving, which we hope will eventually become a beacon for how clinical IT ought to be delivered.” The three hospitals are also making increased use of digital platforms to support patients and staff. New apps have been launched to benefit orthopaedic patients and people with diabetes, and Poole Hospital recently relaunched its website with a new section that allows patients to provide important feedback on their care. Peter Gill, joint director of informatics across Poole, Bournemouth and Christchurch hospitals, explains more: “By developing our IT systems and adopting new technologies, we can significantly improve our patients’ experience. Technology can give patients greater power over their own healthcare and provide staff with the tools they need to provide a more efficient and seamless service.

“We are already working towards achieving paperless patient journeys through the development and implementation of linked clinical computer systems. We are also committed to increasing our use of digital channels to reduce the effort patients and carers have to make when accessing healthcare and give them more control over their own care options.” In fact, IT already plays an integral part in most patients’ care, and the hospitals’ new informatics strategy includes more than 25 projects set to benefit patients and staff over the next five years. Some will take place behind the scenes, such as improvements to computer rooms, server management and networks. Other changes, such as a new service desk system and the roll out of an electronic system used to record patients’ clinical observations, will bring more noticeable benefits. The new observations monitoring system, known as VitalPAC, is operated using a handheld device, similar to an iPhone, allowing nursing staff to record or “track” observations, such as blood pressure or heart rate. If a patient’s condition deteriorates, an appropriate member of staff will automatically be alerted. Sarah Allaway, a senior nurse leading on the clinical implementation of the VitalPAC system at RBCH, says: “We’ve seen how technology has made a huge difference to our patients and the quality of their care. With VitalPAC, changes in patients’ conditions can be monitored much more closely, helping us to respond quickly to those who need it. Patient safety and the quality of their care is the most important part of what we do and it’s fantastic that we’re able to take advantage of modern technology to keep improving the service we provide.”

On the beat... in West Moors
We would like to introduce your new Beat Officer, PC 1811 Dan Avey-Hebditch. Together with PC 0760 Tim Travers and PCSO 5328 Alan Downing, they form the West Moors, St Leonards and St Ives Safer Neighbourhood Team from Dorset Police. PC Avey-Hebditch grew up in the local area, around Longham and Colehill. Having served three years in the army, he joined the police in Hampshire, initially serving in the Portsmouth area. After four years, he transferred to Dorset and has worked in Poole, Blandford and the traffic section at Ferndown. His role is now to support the response officers and he is there to help stay in touch and follow through on any incidents in the area. These might include neighbourly disputes or school issues. As part of the community liaison, the Beat Officer also looks to contact and work with Homewatch groups and local media to raise awareness of issues or help handle those raised by local residents. In general the purpose is to be a visible police presence in the local community. At this time of year, the main point that PC Avey-Hebditch wants to get across is to remain vigilant. Yes, we live in an area that has one of the lowest crime rates in the country, but that does not mean we should get complacent. Keep sheds locked, lock side accesses and ensure nothing valuable is left on view in the car or under the Christmas tree. The nights are drawing in ever earlier as we get further into winter and road safety for children (and adults) becomes a greater priority. Ensure that any bike

One of the other things that PC AveyHebditch stressed was the use of 999 and the definition of “an emergency”. If life is in danger, property is at risk, a crime is in progress or you think there is a possibility that it may occur then call 999. The call handlers will take all the details and ensure that it is routed to the correct team. Too many times people wait or think that it may not be important and vital opportunities to potentially prevent crimes from occurring or catch offenders in the act are missed. This is a time of year beloved by burglars and opportunistic thieves because most of us will not take even the most elementary precautions to safeguard the presents intended for our friends and relatives. Don’t leave expensive looking parcels around the Christmas tree in full view of a window so that they can be seen from the road. Make sure your house is secure and the windows and doors locked when you go out. You can be sure that villains will target your shed (if you have one) because sheds are often out of sight of the house, are rarely alarmed, usually unlocked and might contain hundreds of pounds worth of expensive items. Talking about Wildlife...
The Red Squirrel The iconic red squirrel, instantly recognisable by its copper colour and impressive ear tufts, is the only native squirrel in the UK. Sadly in decline now for several decades, its very existence may be under threat. The biggest threat to the survival of the red squirrel is deemed to be its introduced American cousin, the once exotic grey squirrel. In addition to competition for habitat and food sources, the greys are sometimes carriers and spreaders of the squirrel pox, fatal to reds but to which they themselves are immune. Red squirrels’ favourite habitat is conifer and broadleaved woodland, where they feast mostly on tree seeds, and the diet also includes fruits, berries and fungi, and even insects. In the autumn, in preparation for the meagre winter months, red squirrels fatten up and store food in the ground. They are mostly arboreal creatures, unlike the greys, and spend most of their time in the tree canopy, especially in inclement weather. The red squirrel is mostly solitary and does not have much of a social life with other reds, but occasionally they do share a nest, known as a drey, built a few meters off the ground. The young ones are born in dreys, usually in the early spring. The reds are not prolific breeders, and only produce one or two litters a year, with around 3-4 kittens, not all of which always survive. Despite their tiny size - the adults only weigh about 250 to 350 grams - the reds are lively creatures, and with patience, can be observed jumping from tree to tree. They are also good swimmers. The coat, which can vary from reddish brown
to almost black, moults twice a year, the winter coat being darker and thicker than the summer one. The famous ear tufts only moult once a year, in late autumn. In the UK, Scotland is a stronghold for red squirrels, with an estimated population of 120,000. Here in the south of England red squirrels are virtually extinct, with only a few small pockets remaining, such as the ones on Brownsea Island and The Isle of Wight. However, all is certainly not bleak for the red squirrels’ future, and a lot is being done in order to aid their survival amidst the threats they face. The red squirrel is protected by law, and organisations such as the Red Squirrel Survival Trust are committed to the protection of this national treasure. The Wildlife Trusts are doing their bit as well, and you can help by joining the Dorset Wildlife Trust’s Red Squirrel Adoption Scheme. ♪ West Moors Singers ♫ Our Christmas Concerts this year are at 7.30pm on Wednesday 18th December 2013 at St Anthony’s Church Hall Pinehurst Road and at 7.30pm at the Barrington Theatre, Ferndown Community Centre, on Friday 20th December 2013. There is no Saturday Concert this year so book early, unreserved tickets £7.00 are available nearer the time from Jim Selby, Quality Butcher, Station Road, West Moors or from the Ticket Manager, Keith Burgess on 01202 870769. This year’s concert includes a Christmas Cantata called “Night of Miracles” which is a truly wonderful telling of the Christmas Story. We have a new approach to rehearsals this year as we do not have an overall Musical Director, but for the Cantata we have been delighted to enlist the assistance of Hilton Jones, a very experienced singer and conductor, who is managing to extract some lovely sounds from us at these early stages. We really feel as if we have been put through our paces at rehearsals, but in a nice way, which is great. On the performances we are delighted to have the services of our former long term MD Sue Oldrey. The rest of the concert will include festive choral songs, ensembles, solos and duets, comedy and usual community singing of Carols. Have you been impressed and inspired by the “Choir” programs by Gareth Malone especially the “Military Wives” and the Royal Mail choir? If so what about having a go? We are always on the lookout for new members. We have great fun every Monday night at
St Martins Church Hall, Station Road, West Moors from 7.30pm to 9.45pm and would welcome anyone wishing to have a good fun sing, whether experienced or not. Just turn up, you would be very welcome, men especially welcome. We have some good people from whom you could easily learn. There is loads of friendly help from existing members and you are not required to be able to read music. Some people learn by ear and some bring mini recorders along so they can learn in their own home. If you can sing and make a good noise in the shower, we would like to hear from you. Stick Man trail brings
to life this winter
Fans of the popular children’s character Stick Man can enjoy their own Stick Man adventures by following a new activity trail at Moors Valley Country Park and Forest until January next year. Created by Julia Donaldson, who also wrote The Gruffalo, Stick Man lives, perhaps not surprisingly, in a tree with his wife and three children. Forestry Commission England has teamed up with the popular children’s character to create a special adventure trail to encourage children and families to get out into the forest. The Moors Valley trail is one of thirteen that Forestry Commission England has created around the country where children can engage in imaginative play and find out more about forests and the importance of wood and trees to their daily lives. Families can have fun and learn about Stick Man’s forest home by following the special Stick Man trail, complete with activities for all ages. The trail winds through the Park and into the Forest with 10 activity boards to help children and adults make their own Stick Man to take home, identify tree patterns and shapes, build a twig tower and explore the sights and sounds around them. Emma Reeks, Education Ranger at Moors Valley, said, “Stick Man is a delightful character and has a huge national following built around Julia Donaldson’s engaging story and the charming illustrations of Axel Scheffler.
“In the story, Stick Man goes for a jog only to find that the world is an eventful place for a stick. Along the way he encounters a dog that wants to play with him, a swan that makes him part of her nest and a boy that uses him as a snowman’s arm. Of course, like all the best stories, this one has a happy ending when Stick Man eventually returns home, with a little help from Santa Claus! “We estimate that around 5000 children followed Moors Valley’s Gruffalo Trail during the year it was open. I’m sure that Stick Man will be just as popular and will inspire children to use the forest as their playground and create their own stories, while learning vital skills to help in their development.” The Stick Man trail is open from Saturday 26 October to Friday 31 January 2014 and trail cards cost £2 each. The Adventures of Nellie The Dorset Publications Camper Van So this month we stayed pretty close to home and visited Avon Heath Country Park. I must admit we didn’t stay overnight in Nellie. Fair weather campers you may well call us! There are in fact quite a few caravan parks along this stretch of the road, off the A31 from Ringwood. There is the Oakdene Forest Park where we have not yet stayed, but I have used their leisure facilities which are very good. There is also St Leonards Farm Caravan and Camping Park. Either of these places would be ideal for Nellie in the warmer weather, so next summer here we come! Instead of a full weekend away, we spent the day at Avon Heath. There are various wooden frames to climb on, a spider’s web, rope climb frame, a snake to crawl through and a zip wire. All good fun… and not just for the children as you can see! Stephen and Martin with his children also challenged themselves to the ropes… and the wall. Glory was achieved, as you see in their smiles.
What I do like about having bought Nellie, is that we now force ourselves out where in the past we may have stayed inside and not made the effort. Walking is good for all of us and finding places to go where children will walk willingly and eagerly without giving you a headache by the time you get back home, is forever a challenge. At Avon Heath they cater for children really well and we chose to do “Who is Hiding at Avon Heath” which is about an hour’s walk. You can see Hayden here holding his clipboard, all smiling and at the ready. The idea is to follow the signs

We saw a number of fabulous fungi
Hayden’s artistic footprint drawings and draw the footprints of the animal described. It was fun, easy to do and kept the children entertained. On route we saw very large mushrooms, a huge spider’s web and an ant hill! I have never really seen an ant hill quite this size. It was enormous! Such a feat of nature. Martin, who was ever adventurous from a very early age, from what he tells us, put his hand on the hill and was immediately covered in crawling

creatures. Do NOT try this at home. It is absolutely not recommended, but Martin did seem to enjoy it. The children, after a rather perplexed and bedazzled look, quite rightfully, ran away! It was a perfect day weather-wise, sunny, bright and crisp. The views were quite stunning – and all within very easy reach of where we live. Of course I had my customary cup of coffee - and a rest - to end the day, having boiled the water in Nellie’s whistling kettle. Award-winning horticulturist receives local recognition The Mayor of Ferndown, Cllr John Lewis has presented a plaque to Neil Lucas, the owner of Knoll Gardens, in recognition of the help he has provided to the Town Council over many years. Cllr Lewis presented the plaque during his Civic Day visit to the show gardens, in the company of nearly 30 dignitaries from across the whole of Dorset. During a tour of the four-acre show gardens the visiting party admired the stunning autumn colour, marvelled at the ‘champion’ eucalyptus tree, and learned a little of Neil’s low impact style of gardening. Neil Lucas is a best-selling author and
member of the RHS Council; he also holds ten consecutive Chelsea Gold Medals. Knoll Gardens and its adjacent nursery are open Tuesday to Saturday, 10am – 4pm.

Plant of the Month For a burst of late flowers, especially in containers, the Argyranthemum frutescens “Crazy Daisy” is a perfect choice. Indeed they work well as a mass of colour in mixed flowerbeds, interspersed with other bushes particularly roses who enjoy the same high water consumption. Flowering best in spring these plants, if looked after, will give you another big flower show in the autumn. In harsher climates you may need to replace them each year. Protect them against the wind in coastal gardens and ensure that during hot weather they are watered well at least every three days. These are also great as you don’t need to do any deadheading!

Wimborne & Ferndown Lions Club raise £2500 for the John Thornton Young Achievers Foundation Wimborne & Ferndown Lions Club President, Frank Fortey, presented a cheque for £2500 to the John Thornton Young Achievers Foundation (JTYAF). The money was raised from The Dorset Charity Horse & Dog Show and a recent Quiz Night at the Barrington Centre in Ferndown. The Lions have supported the JTYAF since 2011 and have raised over £6000 for the Ferndown based charity. The JTYAF supports young people from a wide range of youth organisations providing them with scholarships and bursaries to support their personal development and the pursuit of their ambitions.
Pete Thornton commented “We really appreciate the fantastic support we receive from the Wimborne and Ferndown Lions Club. Together we are making a real difference to the lives of local young people.” Fundraising Chair Lion Neil Godfrey said “We are delighted to continue to support this worthwhile local charity that helps so many local young people to realise their ambitions”. The Lions meet on the 1st and 3rd Tuesday of the month at the Royal British Legion in Church Road, Ferndown from 7.30pm, new members welcome.

West Moors Library News & Events We continue to hold Library Gets Lively sessions on the first and third Thursday mornings of the month from 10.30am to 11.15am. These sessions are aimed at pre-school age group we have rhymes, stories and a craft activity. Our Knit and Natter group now meet on the 1st and 3rd Monday afternoon in the month from 2.30pm to 4.00pm. All are welcome for a chat, knit and a chance to choose your favourite book. Our Reminiscence sessions will continue to run in the new year if supported. At the moment we have sessions on the last Tuesday of the month from 2pm to 3.30pm up until December. Come along for an informal get together to chat about your memories and finish with a cup of tea!! On 28th November we invite anyone who uses audio books on a regular basis to come and join us for afternoon tea where we will update you on new titles and have a chance to talk about various services which you may be able to use. We look forward to seeing you from 2.30pm to 3.30pm. Bring along someone for support if you wish. West Moors library will be having an Open Day on Saturday 7th December. Anyone whose membership has lapsed or anyone who is not yet a member (and there
are thousands of you) are invited to come and join us for coffee and a chat. This will be a great opportunity for you to meet various organisations that use the library and find out more about what the library has to offer. For instance did you know that we now have Wi-Fi access and that our computer systems are being updated very shortly? Children are welcome and there will be an activity for them to do. More information will follow look out for posters. At this time of the year it is sometimes diffi cult for people to get out and about - don’t forget we offer a delivery service of books to those that need it. St Martin’s Church Opens New Doors Sunday October 20th saw the official opening of the new entrance at St Martin’s United Reformed Church in West Moors, presided over by Revd Margaret Tilley. Some 80 members, representatives of other churches and the parish council, local residents and the contractors who had undertaken the work saw Mrs Muriel Cooper, the longest serving member and retired Elder, symbolically cut the ribbon to open the new entrance. The Ensemble from Verwood Concert Brass Band played introductions and the hymns and Mrs Naomi Lomax sang the Albert Hay Malotte version of the

The original entrance was at the side of the church preventing anyone from seeing inside unless they entered the building. A lot of interest has already been shown in the new glass fronted entrance and foyer which enables the community to see into the church with its modern comfortable seating and the illuminated cross at the far end which was recycled out of the timber of the original pews. Commenting on the project, Church Elder, Christopher Legrand said ‘The church hall is already used as a meeting room for local organsiations but with the changes made the church has became a multi-functional meeting area as well.’

Tastes so good... BUTTERNUT SQUASH & FRESH GINGER SOUP
When winter is looming, there is nothing more warming to the heart and soul than a bowl of freshly made soup. This one is no exception. Eat with a hunk of soft bread and butter, put your feet up and savor every mouthful.
Ingredients for 4 big servings:
Equipment: Wand blender
50g butter 2 large diced onions 1 good sized butternut squash, peeled and cubed 50g fresh ginger root, peeled and sliced 300ml Greek yogurt 300ml vegetable stock 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon Salt & pepper Handful of chopped parsley
Method: Melt the butter in a large, heavy bottomed pan.

Add the onions and cook until soft. Add stock, butternut squash, ginger and cinnamon. Cook for 20 minutes or so, until soft. Set aside to cool for a few minutes then blend until smooth with a wand blender. Stir in the Greek yogurt. Season to taste. Gently heat to serving temperature and garnish with parsley.
