Hello West Moors!

We had a great Halloween Party with friends as you can see on page 42. Not only did the children have their faces painted but so did the adults! Personally I think it is an improvement. See what you think…

Then the Fright Night in Ferndown arranged by several local organisations and supported by the Ferndown Town Council was a real success. You can see photos of this on page 26. All a good excuse to let our hair down for an evening! I hope you were able to join in some of the fun too.

Wow it is November 2011. Dare I say it but Christmas is just around the corner… again. It really is time to put attention on the house, clean the carpets ready for the family to arrive, get the roof fixed, tidy the garden, repair the boiler, buy a new fireplace, have all the electrics checked, finally plaster that wall, get a new fitted kitchen or just go all out and plan that new conservatory you have been so longing for. Whatever it is we have local people right here in The West Moors Directory wanting to help you. Your continued calls and support over the last six and a half years have really made all the difference! I still get excited when I see a van in the area that is advertising with us. If you see a van and then a lady waving with a big smile on her face, it could just be me! Really! It must look very funny. The lucky winner of the Country Store Health Food hamper is Julie Wallom.

Well done! This month there is a great prize… a family ticket to see Jack and the Beanstalk at The Pavilion in Bournemouth on 6th December! Have a great month.

HSBC Extends Reduced Loan Rate Scheme For Businesses That Are Recruiting Jobs Following positive feedback from new and existing customers, HSBC is extending its Employer Business Loan offer, which supports growing UK businesses that are creating new jobs. The scheme will now be available until 31 December 2011.

Small business customers that apply for an Employer Business Loan between £1,000 and £25,000 receive a 1 per cent discount on the loan interest rate they pay for each person they have hired in the last six months, up to a maximum of 3 per cent.

The extension of the Employer Business Loan scheme, which was initially launched in March, highlights the bank’s commitment to supporting strong, viable businesses. As part of this commitment, during the next three months, HSBC will be running a number of activities focussed on lending. The programme will see 100 local networking events being held across the UK, providing tips for businesses looking for growth and support on how to benefit from international opportunities.

Fright Night First

Best Boy

Ferndown’s first Fright Night was a real success! Organised by a number of local organisations with support from the Town Council, visitors were treated to spooky stories from the resident witch, a candlelit trail through the woods with theatrical accompaniment and culinary delights such as Hot toads and BBQ bat wings (thanks to the Ferndown Rotary Club). Representatives from Tesco in Ferndown were on hand to present the prizes to the winners of the fancy dress competition.

The event was officially opened by the Town Crier and the Mayor of Ferndown, Cllr John Muggleton.

Thanks go to Gerry Clarke, Chairman of the organising committee, and all of the volunteers who made it such a great event. Here’s to another one next year!

Give blood and help save a life Could you spare an hour of your time to help save a life this autumn?

NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT) are asking people to give blood over the coming weeks to make sure blood stocks stay healthy as winter approaches.

With donors more likely to stay at home during the winter and many people unable to donate due to seasonal coughs and colds, it’s vital that those who can give blood at the moment do so. The whole process takes around an hour – with the actual donation taking less than ten minutes – and could save the life of up to three people.

Jonathan Sewell, Lead Donor Relations Manager for NHS Blood and Transplant, said: “We need to collect thousands of units of blood every day to provide patients in hospitals across the country with lifesaving transfusions. At this time of year blood stocks tend to dip because people are unable to give blood, so it’s important that people come forward to donate if they can do.”

Anyone aged between 17 and 65, weighing more than 50 kg (7 stone 12lbs) and in general good health could potentially start saving lives by becoming a blood donor. There is no upper age limit for those who have donated in the last two years. To book an appointment call 0300 123 23 23 or visit www.blood.co.uk.

Why is the Memorial Hall charging parents to park?

West Moors Memorial Hall Council has for the second year running asked Dorset County Council for financial assistance to defray the expenses incurred in maintaining the hall car park. This request has again been declined, despite the fact that the proposed pedestrian crossing will encourage extra parking for both St. Mary’s School and the Castleman trailway.

Regretfully, because of this lack of council support, it has again been necessary to ask parents to pay an annual charge of £10 for parking in connection with the school run.

Happily the scheme has the full support of St. Mary’s School and with very few exceptions those using the facility have cheerfully paid up. The scheme also reduces congestion in the Avenue around the school opening and closing times.

Villagers should note that the Hall is a registered charity and unlike Ferndown Barrington Theatre or Verwood Hub, it receives no support from either the District or County Council. If the Hall Council is to continue to maintain an aged building on behalf of the community, without imposing a burden on local taxes, it needs to recover its costs.

If you have not yet paid, or you wish to start using the car park to avoid all the hassle of reverse parallel parking in the Avenue, please contact the School Office to obtain your parking permit. £10 for a whole year- it has to be good value!!!

West Moors Library saved!!

A great deal of hard work and support from individuals in the community, the parish council and working party went into achieving this result. A very big THANK YOU to you all. We now need to encourage more people to use the library not only to borrow books but for a wide range of other facilities it provides. We had a very successful Open Day in September where we promoted services we offer to the community e.g. deliveries to housebound residents, reading groups to join, computer classes, regular councillor surgeries, and children's activates.

Hou seboun d d eliveries - any on e interested or knows someone who would benefit form this service call the library on 873272 and we can arrange a visit. Deliveries are made every 3 weeks

by WRVS volunteers - books with large print, books on tape or books on CD are available.

Reading Group - there are 2 very successful reading groups which meet monthly at the library. There was interest shown by 6 people at the open day to start another reading group (day, time and venue yet to be decided) Again any one interested please call into the library or phone on 873272.

First Time on Line computer sessions are run on a Monday morning from 9.30 - 12 noon for those who have very little knowledge of how to 'find their way around' a computer. Sessions are free and are run by a qualified instructor.

Please encourage friends and neighbours to 'have a go'. The library has 6 public computers so there is plenty of chance to practice!

Chris Chope MP holds surgeries at the library throughout the year. Dates available on request - you can make an appointment to speak to him on any matter privately at the library on selected Saturday mornings. The District and county councillors hold a surgery at the library on the first Saturday in the month from 10.00 - 11.00am - no need to make an appointment.

We have started a new group for the 8 10 year olds called Chatterbooks. It meets on the last Tuesday of the month from 55.45pm and is a fun session with activities based around reading, authors and Stories from the Web. This is a new venture and we would encourage all parents to see if their children would like to join - their commitment will be for a year.

Another new venture is Library Gets Lively. This replaces the storytime and rhymetime sessions. It takes place the first and third Thursday afternoon in the month from 3-3.45pm and includes rhymes, stories and craft activity for the under 4's. To make this worthwhile we do need continued support as their is quite a lot of planning involved in these sessions.

Above all COME IN and see what we offer - membership is FREE and you can order new releases FREE (including DVD's) - no need to buy books that you no longer have room to store!

Halloween 2011

Witches, vampires, devils, ghouls and even the Grim Reaper himself were out in force this Halloween.

We got together with some friends and everyone made a real effort to get into the “spirit” of things!

The kids had great fun getting their faces painted — not to mention some of the adults too! With some music specially selected to befit the occasion and also a quiz to get the “brains” in motion as well, everyone had a real “hoot”!

One of the best bits was “Guess who or what you are?”, where each person had a name of a person or object attached to their back and then by way of asking questions that could only be answered by “yes” or “no” work out who or what they were. Great fun!
