Dear Neighbours, We certainly have had mixed weather recently Edition 153 and have even had some sunshine! Do you have a holiday planned this year, or are you going to relax at home with a good book and a cuppa? Whatever you decide, we do hope you are looking forward to Stephen & Debbie Corney it. We have a trip to Wales this month which we are definitely looking forward to. We are then going to stay local in the summer holidays as our little Rockley Park caravan is proving to be very successful.

Hopefully we have a ray of sunshine here in the magazine for you too with lots of good news and articles for you to read. Nellie took us to see our wonderful Jurassic Coast this month. We didn’t see any dinosaurs, but we certainly had a great time. There is so much to enjoy in this part of the world, we are so very lucky.

West Moors Home Watch The future of West Moors Home Watch has been in doubt for some time because many members of the Committee have resigned for various reasons.

The remaining members have valiantly tried to run the Watch, but trying to control an organisation which is four times larger than any other in the village has proved impossible.

An Extraordinary Meeting has resulted in enough volunteers coming forward to enable the Chairman, Roger Long, to form a workable committee, and he hopes to name the new members at the 2018 AGM.

This will take place in the Memorial Hall on June 14th at 7pm. The Police will attend, subject to operational requirements.

Roger was Chairman in 2010 when the West Moors Home Watch was chosen by the Police and ‘Association of Dorset Watches’ as the Best Home Watch in Dorset and he hopes that with the cooperation of the whole village we could reach that status again.

Roger intends to act as Chairman until the AGM of 2019 and will then stand down in favour of the vice chair who is yet to be appointed.

Why make a Lasting Power of Attorney The possibility of losing mental capacity can be a distressing thought and is often seen as something that does not need to be considered until the future. However, it needs to be arranged whilst still having capacity and is best made sooner rather than later.

Capacity could potentially be lost at any time, such as through an accident, a stroke or a degenerative condition such as Alzheimer’s and with growing reports of 18-45year olds suffering from mental health problems it can happen to people of any age.

If capacity is lost and there is no LPA in place, any family or friends will have to apply to the Court of Protection for a Deputyship to make decisions on the donor’s behalf.

This is a lengthier process, costs much more than registering an LPA and will incur ongoing costs which an LPA does not.

It can never be certain that the Court of Protection will approve an application and

they are particularly reluctant to approve a Deputyship for a person’s health and welfare.

By using an LPA the donor can choose who will make decisions for them and how these decisions may be made. This control is lost if a Deputy must be appointed after capacity is lost.

Problems can be created where one member of a couple loses capacity. If the majority of the couple’s assets are held in joint names and one loses capacity, the other will not be able to access the joint accounts or deal with jointly owned property without applying to the Court of Protection. Similarly, if assets are mostly in the name of one partner who loses capacity, it could potentially leave the other unable to access any assets or be unable to maintain the home.

Providing the answers

to your legal questions

My mother has died, leaving a bungalow and some savings. I have been told that I need a Grant of Probate. Please can you explain what this involves and if this is correct?

When someone leaves assets over £5,000 to £10,000 in value it is necessary to obtain a document known as a Grant of Probate from the Probate Registry to enable the estate to be collected and dealt with.

Once the Grant has been issued your Mother’s estate can then be dealt with in accordance with her Will, or in accordance with the statutory order of distribution if there is not a Will. The persons appointed under the Grant being the Executors or Administrators have the authority to deal with all aspects of the administration of an estate.

This involves establishing the value of all your Mother’s financial assets, liabilities and whether the

estate is subject to Inheritance Tax (IHT). If so, this will need to be settled as well as; submitting probate documentation, finalising income tax and other IHT matters. You will also need to collect any assets from financial institutions, sell or transfer your Mother’s property, before distributing the estate in accordance with her Will.

To save money I decided to arrange the divorce via a website. Years later my wife is now requesting a financial settlement through the courts. Is she able to do this?

If it seems too cheap to be true it probably is too good to be true and that applies to a quickie divorce. Therefore beware of advertisements for a cheap quick divorce, as that legal service is unlikely to include also dealing with financial matters or any child arrangements.

Unfortunately this is an issue among many online divorces. Often these only deal with the divorce process itself rather than any financial or child arrangements, unless specifically instructed. This means that any financial matters that are not dealt with and recorded properly at the time of the divorce can leave you vulnerable to future claims.

West Moors Lunch & Friendship Club The West Moors Lunch and Friendship Club meets in St. Anthony‛s church hall every Wednesday from 11.00am until 3.30pm.

After a wonderful pre-Easter celebration of beautiful Easter bonnets and Easter eggs combined with our 2nd open afternoon tea, the club enjoyed Ali‛s Music for health to start our summer programme, then the singing of Paul Spencer who is a great favourite. Looking ahead we have a visit by Sweet Harmony, which also sounds musical, and our Royal Wedding celebration with Chris Legrand on 16th May. Our mornings begin with chatting and a visit to our Bring and Buy table.

Following lunch and a raffle we have board games, a quiz or perhaps a beetle drive, if there is no visiting entertainment. We end the afternoon with tea and cake then Bingo.

West Moors Flower Group meets on the third Wednesday of the month at the memorial hall at 10am, when we have a Area demonstrator showings us her designs.

In April we had Amy Shakeshaft who is a new demonstrator to us, her designs were based on a trip to town the stage looked stunning, the arrangement shown is her take on driving through the forest.

The Adventures of Nellie The Dorset Publications Camper Van Nellie, the Dorset Publications Campervan is back in full swing. She loves taking us places and discovering new locations, as well as visiting some old favourites. This month she took us to our wonderful Jurassic Coast.

How lucky are we to be so close to such a part of history with the ability to find fossils from literally millions of years ago! They are nearly as old as Nellie… Despite Nellie’s aging years and occasional aches and pains she still loves to learn. It keeps her young at heart you know.

She never knew that this part of the Jurassic Coast is actually privately owned by the Weld Family who give us permission to walk on their land! I have to say we are very grateful. This family have owned the land since 1641 after Humphrey Weld, a direct ancestor of James Weld, who now owns the Lulworth Estate, bought Lulworth Castle and its extensive 12,000 acres of grounds from politician Thomas

The family own 5 miles of the whole 95 mile stretch of coast between Exmouth in East Devon and Studland Bay in Dorset. This includes the famous Durdle Door and Lulworth Cove, where Nellie took us. It had cost James £15,000 to rebuild the stairs down to Durdle Door in 2009, after a storm destroyed the old pathway.

We were very glad he had done so, as it is quite a trek to the beach, but a wonderful one. Nellie sat overlooking the incredible cliffs and bluey green sea while we strolled along the cliff tops and wandered slowly down to the rocks and pebbles below.

Durdle Door is quite a sight. It shows the effects of the bashing waves and has a sense of time, of what has gone on long ago, and at the same time how things change, develop and move on.

39 and ponder over this, gazing silently at the wonder of nature. Is Nellie getting a bit too deep and philosophical? She does that you know!

The sun was shining that day, but it wasn’t too warm, so just right for a walk. The climb back is a bit of a test and Nellie was glad she had stayed in the car park.

Lulworth Cove. Small but perfectly formed (just like Nellie..?). This amazing, almost circular cove is great for adults and children alike. With rocks pools at low tide, it is perfect for exploring. The short walk to the beach passes a house, now ‘an olde sweet shop’, which is tiny but once housed a whole family. Again a sign of how times have changed.

As soon as you arrive at the wonderful circular cove itslef you are dazzled by the beautiful white pebble beach with its blue waters and wonderful rock pools teeming with sea creatures. Dogs are permitted on the left-hand side of the slipway. The Heritage Centre near

On the way to the spectacular Durdle Door the carpark is a must for those wanting to learn more about the Jurassic Coast and how it is ever changing. There are even boat trips during the summer.

So yes, we live in an area with stunning sea views, rocks, cliffs, stories of dinosaurs, fossil beaches and glorious countryside. Nellie grinned from wheel to wheel while she drove us back through those narrow country lanes, passing tea rooms, farm shops and garden centres, very content.

JTYAF Ghana Expedition 2018 The JTYAF is funding the Air Cadet Junior Leaders Expedition to Ghana later this year where they will be partnering the local charity Village by Village. 11 Qualified Junior Leaders (pictured above) have been selected for this opportunity to join the exciting expedition which will again focus on improving the access to education for children in the village of Obom. They will be building and improving the junior school buildings, providing a safe and sustainable structure in the vicinity of the village.

The project builds on the work completed by the 2017 group who successfully completed the building of a proper primary school which is now in full use and educating the young children of Obom.

The 2018 expedition aims to build a Junior High School in replacement of the existing condemned clay structure.

This school, once completed, will be adopted by the Ghanaian government with funding and provision of teachers for at least 10 years.

Between the two projects children aged 5 to 18 in Obom will finally have access to reliable and modern education.

These schools will not only provide them with an education and better opportunities for the future but will also help stimulate income for local people and the local economy.

Sainsbury’s Ferndown have kindly donated over £1000 worth of Sports Relief merchandise which includes, t-shirts, socks, water bottles, and mugs which is sure to bring a smile to many faces, young and old.

John’s legacy lives on and is making a huge difference to not only the Junior Leaders taking part in this expedition, but also to families living in the village of Obom. Education transforms lives.

For most of these young children, education represents the only way out of a life of poverty. No other investment has such a lasting effect as the education of children.

GUIDE Pest Control

Even the best kept garden will be teeming with critters all conspiring to sabotage your growing efforts and you could spend a lot on named chemicals to combat various problems but it may be worth having a go with more environmentally friendly remedies first.

For instance, the cabbage-white butterfly, as its name suggests will home in on your cabbages and other brassicas, lay its eggs and, two weeks later, a mass of caterpillars will be eating holes in the leaves. Pick them off by hand, inspecting the plants carefully every day or two and try spraying them with salty water to deter them. To combat greenfly, try crushing a clove of garlic in warm water, leave for about 6 hours, strain into a hand spray and spray over the plants. It’s very effective.

If you find aphids on your rose buds, a disgusting but effective treatment is to rub them out with your fingers. Cats can be deterred with oldfashioned moth balls although the effects don’t

last very long. After a wet night a local cat had buried all of ours! Of all the pests that will drive you up the wall, slugs and snails are at the top of the list, particularly when you have young seedlings or are growing hostas or sunflowers.

For plants in pots, Vaseline or grease smeared round the pot can help, as can copper strips which cause electro-chemical shocks. Otherwise, try sharp mulches around the plants that need protection, such as sharp gravel, crushed eggshells or broken seashells. Some say hair clippings work (see your local hairdresser) and caffeine is supposed to be lethal to molluscs so try coffee grounds. Half fill a dish with beer (I don’t think they are particularly fussy about the brand!) and sink it in the ground to attract the slugs which fall in and drown. Of course, nothing really beats a size 10 boot and a thorough search of the garden with a torch in hand on a damp night might pay dividends.

Rocky Flower Show & Plant Fair A must-see event for anybody interested in the diversity of small plants, this competitive show is full of surprises. It is run by the Alpine Garden Society, showcasing mountain plants, small herbaceous plants, dwarf shrubs and bulbs.

The plant fair will be attended by specialist alpine and non-alpine nurseries bringing plants suitable for most sites: Aberconwy Nursery, Copton Ash, Hartside Nursery, Kevin Hughes Plants, Leesa’s Alpines, Marina Plants, Parham Bungalow Plants, Potterton’s Nursery, Tale Valley Nursery, The Mead Nursery, Thuya Alpine Nursery.

They will be happy to take orders in advance and bring plants for you as well as giving cultivation advice. There is a Plant Forum to give you ideas, photographic display and opportunity for plant photography. Come early for the plant sales and enjoy our home-baked cakes, hot and cold drinks and light lunches.

Cheese and Chilli Festival After a great turnout in 2017, the Cheese and Chilli Festival is back in 2018, celebrating both Cheese and Chilli within a family friendly festival setting.

Between 70 and 100 traders selling cheese and chilli associated products as well as craft and retail stands.

Entertainments include PIG RACING, Falconry displays, Punch & Judy, Magic Shows, free garden games, children fun rides and inflatables, live music, cooking demonstrations/talks, a chilli eating competition, a chilli sauce competition and the Man v Food challenge.

There is plenty to eat and drink with authentic food stalls and dedicated bars from the likes of the New Forest Downton Brewery and Dorset’s only inflatable pub from ‘Appetite for Adventure.’
