Flower Group members enjoyed a wonderful demonstration by Emily Broomhead, a Chelsea medallist, at their last meeting. On 20th May Marilyn Nourse will be appraising members’ arrangements under the title “What the judge looks for” in preparation for our Show, which takes place on 25th July. Community News
Dementia Friendly Communities In March 2012, the Prime Minister, helped raise the profile of dementia by setting a ‘Dementia Challenge. The challenge was to deliver major improvements in dementia care and research by 2015. To meet this challenge was a commitment to developing Dementia Friendly Communities across the UK. A dementia friendly community is one where people with dementia are enable to live as independently as possible and to continue to feel part of their community. Also, that the community meet those with dementia with understanding and compassion, and support their access to and in their communities. Across Dorset (and other counties); including Wimborne and Christchurch, the Alzheimer’s Society will support and help co-ordinate the work of setting up dementia friendly communities. West Moors has begun that, by forming a local Action Group. This group is supported by Angela Sleet - POPP Champion for West Moors (Partnership for Older People Programme) and Cllr Isobel Dale, who represents West Moors Parish Council. There have been two meetings to begin that work, it will take time to set up. The Action Group needs more members to share the load and promote and inform local residents, businesses and other organisations and agencies. Would you be prepared to give one or two hours now and again, to support our community to become dementia friendly? You need only volunteer for as little or as much time as you can spare. Our priorities are to contact as many
people as possible; so even if you can only display a poster - that would help. • The Action Group needs more members and someone to lead the group • The Alzheimer’s Society and the Dementia Action Alliance are supporting us • An Action Plan will need to be produced; via the DAA website there are examples to help guide us • We will produce some information leaflets and hold drop-in sessions and attend other events to keep you updated • The Group are looking for someone to help set up a website - do you know someone who can do this? During Dementia Awareness Week - 17 to 23 May 2015; we are holding events in the West Moors Library and the Local Epicentre to meet you and pass on information. Talking about Wildlife...
What can nature do for you? Spring has sprung in Dorset. Daffodils and primroses are adding colour to our landscape, butterflies are flitting around, and blossom is starting to bud on trees – a most welcome sight after a long winter. But what does being outside this time of year mean to you, and how does it make you feel? That’s a question we’re asking as part of the new Dorset Wildlife Trust campaign, ‘My Wild Life’, which asks: what’s your wild life? You may think you don’t live a wild life, but every time you step out of your front door, particularly this time of year, wildlife and outside space can shape your day ahead and change your mood, for the better. ‘Ecotherapy’ (being active outdoors) has been proven to improve health and wellbeing, and is a recognised method for helping those with mental and physical health issues. Flora, from Bridport in Dorset is a wild swimmer and loves spending time outside with her children. She also uses nature to help with projects for her stained glass art business. Flora said, “I get a lot of inspiration from being outdoors. As well as contemporary work, I do a lot of traditional work where stained glass panels often feature birds and foliage. Whilst I’m out with my family in Dorset, there’s plenty to photograph to help me with my work.” Beth, from West Bay said, “I absolutely love our coastline and we enjoy going out with the children. We build dens, we play in the sand and fly kites. It’s important to us to spend time outside with them, getting fresh air and exploring local places. Spending time outside makes me feel inspired, relaxed and invigorated.”

to your legal questions
Every month the solicitors and lawyers at Harold G Walker will be providing answers to your questions about the law. My ex-wife has stopped me from seeing my children. I have been told that before I can issue an application at court to obtain a Child Arrangement Order I must enter into mediation. Is this correct?
If you attempt to make a family application without attending a Mediation Information and Assessment Meeting and you do not qualify for an exemption your application will be returned by the court.
From 22 April 2014 under the Children's and Families Bill 2014 it became mandatory that before an individual can make a family application to the court they must attend a Mediation Information and Assessment Meeting (MIAMS) unless they are exempt. Exemptions include domestic violence, child protection concerns, urgency, attendance at a previous mediation Information or assessment meeting, existing proceedings, disability, imprisonment or you live abroad and only in specified circumstances in each instance.
A Mediation Information and Assessment Meeting is usually conducted as a one to one meeting with a qualified mediator, your ex-wife will be invited to attend a separate meeting. The mediator will advise you upon the process of mediation and other forms of alternative dispute resolution, they will also assess the suitability of your issue.

Mediation itself is voluntary, there is no legal obligation upon you to attend. However, you may find your legal representative and/or the Court will encourage you to do so. If you are entitled to Legal Aid the meeting and any subsequent sessions of mediation will be free to you.

West Moors Lunch and Friendship Club The West Moors Lunch and Friendship Club meets weekly on a Wednesday for a chat, lunch and afternoon tea with games or entertainment. With Easter now over, we look back to our wonderful Easter Bonnets and, at our Easter Lunch, being entertained by Evie, Beth & Ria Collins and their parents in aid of the John Thornton Young Achievers Foundation. Also a group of helpers sang a song and performed a sketch, both very, very funny. Coming up we have Simon Woodley‛s music, Giant Scrabble and a Ukulele Group. The Adventures of Nellie The Dorset Publications Camper Van Nellie loves Poole! We have so much to do on our doorstep here in Dorset. There are plenty of exciting activities for all ages, as well as miles of glorious beaches, just around the corner, in our beautiful town of Bournemouth! Poole Quay is a vibrant place. There is much history, fantastic old buildings and many good restaurants and cafes for a coffee break, or even a full seafood meal. So yes, Nellie loves to travel to Poole. She knows that many of you will be very familiar with the sights and sounds of our wonderful seaside location but she wanted to tell you of her recent exciting trip out and all that she saw. The Sunseeker boats! Oh boy do they look magnificent. We are lucky enough to have Sunseeker based right here in Poole. It is in fact the flagship dealership for new and pre-owned Sunseeker boats and luxury motor yachts. These yachts make Nellie’s mouth water. They give the whole place a sense of wealth, extravagance… and how the other half live! Oh well, maybe not this lifetime but they are great to see anyway.
Nellie spots another old girl by the quay...
Nellie loves Sunseekers! The Pleasure boats! Now these are more like it. Nellie can afford this. Though she is rather too large to actually step on board. (She really does need to go on a diet… again!). Brownsea Island is where these boats take you, as well as some trips to Wareham, Swanage and Old Harry Rocks, so for anyone wanting to have a pleasurable trip around the harbour, take in our glorious scenery, have a coffee on board and generally ‘while away the day’, this is for you! It is also for children as they usually love the sea and it is pretty exciting to watch the land move further and further away. Brownsea Island, which is magnificently set in Poole Harbour with spectacular views over the Purbecks is owned by the National Trust. Lord Baden Powell’s statue salutes you as you set off for ‘his scout’s island’. Our famous, rare, red squirrels can be spotted here so those with a good camera could get some amazing photos. There is also a café as well as a hotel, but only those lucky enough to work for the John Lewis Partnership can stay here, as it is owned by them. The data I have is that there is a long waiting list!
39 Back on the Quay, there are haunted pubs! The King Charles Pub dates all the way back to the 1300s when it was a wool house! Incredible. The Custom House, now a wonderful place to sit and have a coffee or meal, is famous for the smuggling episode some 250 years ago when 30 ‘savage’ smugglers forced there way in and stole 2 ton of tea. Those were the days… There is even an old prison, called Fish Street Gaol. Can you find it? Continuing past the Georgian House, Hotel du Vin, there are some very old Almshouses (a house founded by charity, offering accommodation for poor people) dating back to Henry V. In fact, if local history is your interest then the Poole Museum also houses the Local History Centre. It is based in the historic Town Cellars, where you can learn more about the history of Poole and it’s people. It is a fascinating place to visit, all free of charge and Nellie highly recommends it. For children on the quay there are amusement arcades, an illuminated pirate, crazy golf course which is indoors, above the amusement arcade, so ideal if the weather is not so good… and plenty of ice cream sellers!

One of Poole’s haunted pubs! We love Banana Wharf for lunch. The views are perfect, whether the weather is good or bad, so do mention Nellie to the manager there and give him a big “Hello” from Dorset Publications! One last thing, the shops. Nellie loves “Pavers”, the shoe shop, and has more shoes than she needs, or even her cupboards can store, but hey that’s girls for you. We are well known for it! There is also the nationally and even internationally famous Poole Pottery. The large, open plan shop is great to look around, buy Birthday presents, gifts with “Poole” on them for those out of town, or just a special something for yourself. There is also a place for children to paint a pot themselves. Ideal for Grandma or Grandad. So, do take a day out to our wonderful town of Poole. It has a lot to offer for all ‘shapes and sizes’, all weathers and any time of the year. Nellie hopes you find something new and exciting. Where will Nellie go next…? By Debbie Corney

1st West Moors Scout Group News 1st West Moors Scout Group celebrated St. Georges Day by holding an afternoon of family fun on Sunday 26th April. St George as well as being the patron saint of England, was chosen by Baden Powell over 100 years ago to be their patron saint. Each year Scouts everywhere celebrate St Georges Day by renewing their laws and promises. Members of the 1st West Moors Scout Group met in the Memorial Hall car park and paraded to St Marys School playing field. Pastor Clive Bartlett of the Pinehurst Community Church led a short open air service of prayers and an address about St Georges Christian beliefs being his treasure. The young people enthusiastically joining in with the Pastors links to pirates treasure. The different sections of the scout group then renewed their promises each led by a young person. Everyone was then invited to join in with the fun activities that had been organised by the various section leaders and assistants. These included Hoopla and Snail racing, a Nerf gun frenzy and making a St George sword which some used to slay a dragon. Beavers, Cubs, Scouts, Explorers and their families thoroughly enjoyed themselves and the refreshments laid on by parent supporters. The afternoon was brought to a close by John Millward, the Assistant Group Scout Leader, thanking everyone for attending, particularly those who had taken part in its organisation and concluded with a short prayer.
