Hayden, our son had his first over night cubs “Expedition” last week. A two hour hike in the dark, then a night in a tent with 3 friends. He arrived back exhausted after 3 hour hours sleep he told me. Funnily enough, where I thought he maybe cold out in the open he told me he was too hot, which is why he couldn’t sleep! I couldn’t believe it, that really surprised me. It turned out they were “camping” indoors!!

West Moors Parish Council & Ferndown Jitsu In 2012 in order to mark the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and the Olympic Games in London, West Moors Parish Council announced that it would be making a Legacy Award to an aspiring sports star aged between 11 and 17 who was a resident of West Moors.

All the applicants attended an interview during December and the q u al ity o f t he a p pl ica nt s w a s extremely high making it very difficult to make a decision.

In December, West Moors Parish Council was pleased to announce that Joe Trussell was to be the recipient of the award which was up to ÂŁ1,000.

Joe is the National Junior Jitsu Champion and is due to take part in the Jitsu International Championships in Edinburgh in 2013. Joe trains at the Ferndown Jitsu Club in the Heatherlands Community Centre, he also helps to train the next generation by teaching mini jitsu to 4 to 7 year olds.

On 30th January 2013 a formal presentation took place at the Ferndown Jitsu Club where members of the council and invited guests were treated to a wonderful demonstration from young people of all ages. Joe received a certificate and trophy.

West Moors Parish Council would like to say a huge thank you to the Jitsu club for such a wonderful evening organised by John Hanrahan, the

by Synergy Housing.

The parish council would also like to thank Phoenix Marble and Granite of West Moors for their kind donation of the marble base for the trophy.

Talking about wildlife...

Dorset’s Chalk Streams Most commonly found in the South of England, chalk streams are characterised by their crystal-clear waters. These wildlife-rich rivers have porous beds which act as aquifers, purifiers and reservoirs. Rainwater filters through the soft, white rock and emerges lower down the slope, cool and clean.

Because rainwater is naturally acidic, it also absorbs the chalk’s rich minerals. These are then transported to the river.

As Kenneth Grahame’s The Wind in the Willows suggests, these rivers enable wildlife to thrive; birds, fish and mammals (such as the otter and vole) live off the rich nutrients.

Salmon and trout frequent the sparkling, ‘gin clear’ waters and tall blades of grass line the banks while water crowfoot flowers in the stream. In the meadows nearby, flag iris and meadowsweet grow in clusters, creating a paradise for animals, fishermen and walkers alike.

Unfortunately, these unique ecosystems are under threat. Due to an increase in demand, water companies extract too much water. The drought in early 2012 left many of these beautiful rivers dry. They are also threatened by invasive alien plants and have suffered from alterations by man over the years, reducing the suitability for spawning fish, burrowing water voles and the many important invertebrates that form the basis of the river’s rich wildlife.

With funding from Wessex Water and Dorset Area of Outstanding Beauty, Dorset Wildlife Trust have organised a restoration project: the Do rse t Wild R iv ers P ro jec t. T he partnership works with members of the local community, fishing groups and The Wild Trout Trust to repair the damage and restore the wildlife. The River Allen, which meanders for thirteen miles through the Dorset countryside, is one of the local chalk streams to benefit. Chalk streams are the richest river habitats for wildlife and the River Allen holds

the strongest population in Dorset of rare wildlife such as the native white-clawed crayfish. We now have a chance to do something to protect this important and vulnerable habitat and its wildlife before it is too late.

It is essential that we protect these rare and fragile habitats. We can all make a difference if we think carefully about the water we use; if we use water carefully, we can protect these rivers and conserve the wildlife which depend on them. A demonstration by a professional artist is enjoyed on the second Monday in each month with members, always happy to help each other, meeting for untutored workshops on all other Mondays.

This month on Monday 11th at 9-30 am Alan Langford will be with us to paint Donkeys in watercolour.

On 8th April our guest Colin Courtice will be painting a "Moonlight Sonata" in pastels.

These are both well known local artists who entertain and teach.

WEST MOORS FLOWER GROUP We are a very friendly flower club who meet on the 3rd Wednesday of the month at 10am in West Moors Memorial Hall.

Visitors and new members are very welcome tea/coffee will be served at interval.

West Moors Lunch Club March 2013 sees the celebration of the 1st anniversary of the extension of the club from 2 hours to 4 hours and it seems to have been a great success for everyone, members and helpers alike. The club takes place at St Anthony of Padua church hall from 11am and lunch is served at midday.

Some members leave after lunch but the majority enjoy table games or entertainment, finishing at 3.30pm after tea, cake and one or two games of bingo.

Last mo nth we all to ok part in ‘c hair exercises’ with Kim. Volunteer car drivers & helpers are now needed so please contact Joan on 01202 891519 for information if you have some hours to spare on a Wednesday.

West Moors library update: Groups and events Knit and Natter is being held on the first Monday of the month at 2.30pm (unless it falls on a bank holiday, then it will be the following Monday). All welcome.

The library is having a photographic display in April of West Moors in days gone by.

Police Surgeries are being held on a Saturday morning, once a month, please posters in library for dates.

County Councillor, Peter Finney is in session at the library on the first Saturday of the month, up to and including May. Just pop in, no appointment needed.

We currently have two reading groups looking for more members. If you enjoy reading and discussing a variety of books, this is for you. For further information phone 01202 873272.
