Proud Members of the Ferndown Chamber of Commerce

Hello West Moors! We have a full magazine for you this month with several interesting articles for you to read. One for the mother of the bride from Fab Frocks. There is news on Community Payback in West Moors on page 8. An opportunity to put someone forward to win £3000 of fitted furniture on page 7. Don’t miss the Easter Panto at the Bournemouth Pavilion! Dorothy wants to find her way home on April 5th and 6th. There are even prize tickets to be won—see page 35. We also of course have our local trades people who are ready to help you. The full index at the back gives you a whole range of services contained in magazine. Do mention The West Moors Directory when making any calls or bookings. This makes all the difference. We have plumbers, electricians, decorators, dentists, gardeners, flooring specialists, blind and awning specialists and even a chimney sweep! If there is a category you would like that is not in the book, please let me know and I will find someone for you. If you have a local club community activity that you would like to get new members for, or just let the local people know what you do and when, then please send me an email or give me a call. I can promote these services for free for you! If you have a local business and would like to be included then please let me know also. Our rates are excellent and we give free help with artwork when needed and a free editorial with three months bookings. We are here to help the local people find the right business to help them. Everyone wins! Wishing you a great month of March. Warmest regards,

Community Payback Comes To West Moors Dorset Probation Service Community Payback give the Skate Park in West Moors a new look. Dorset Police and Dorset Probation Service were at the skate park in West Moors on Monday 16 and Tuesday 17 January 2012 giving it a new lease of life. The skate ramps were covered heavily in graffiti, and the BMX track itself was unusable due to the grass and weeds overgrowing. With this area looking as it did, West Moors had seen an increase in litter around the park, anti social behaviour, criminal damage to scooters and bikes, and bullying with young people not wanting to use the area. Police Community Support Officer Steve Winning liaised with The Parish Council who arranged to have Community Payback attend and clean up the park. Community payback have given the skate ramps a fresh coat of paint, cleared the BMX track of shrubs and weeds and cut the grass to make this facility useable once again. Community Payback is responsible for the delivery of unpaid work across the whole of Dorset, by offenders sentenced to between 40 and 300 hours by the Courts. Offenders must work an average of 7 hours per day, for one day per week. Dorset Probation Trust has an excellent track record of Community Payback working in partnership with organisations and people within the Dorset community, to ensure that the work undertaken by offenders makes significant benefit to the people of Dorset.

TWMD March 2012 page 8

Police Community Support Officer Steve Winning spoke with members of the public using the area after the work was completed and they said: “It was nice to see the graffiti gone and we can use the BMX track. We hope it stays this way.” He also spoke with some of the dog walkers who walk nearby and they said, “It freshens up the area, its lovely” The Parish Council wishes to express sincere thanks to Dorset Probation Service, the West Moors Safer Neighbourhood Team, Police Constable Tony Tester & Police Community Support Officer Steve Winning, and to Judi Weedon, Parish Clerk for initiating, supervising and completing this piece of community partnership work. Also further thanks to Travis Perkins on Ferndown Industrial Estate for providing the paintbrushes and Rollers.

Birds flock to Moors Valley Country Park With early warm weather followed by a really cold snap there’s been some stunning sights for bird watchers at Moors Valley Country Park and Forest near Ringwood, recently. It’s usually possible to see between 35 – 40 species on a typical walk around the Park, and the warm temperatures experienced earlier in the year have meant that many of them are already in their bright spring plumage looking very striking against the stark frosted scenery. Several bullfinches (Pyrrhula pyrrhula) have been spotted at Moors Valley this year. One of the most attractive native finches, it is only recently that their conservation status has been reduced from red to amber. Bullfinch numbers had been in serious decline, thought to have been caused by a reduction in woodland areas, so it is good to know they are on the increase at the Park. Gadwalls (Anas strepera) have also increased in number at Moors Valley. Another bird with an amber conservation status, this grey-coloured dabbling duck is a little smaller than a mallard, and nests in low numbers in the UK. At Moors Valley numbers have increased to 50 or 60 on the lake over the last two winters. Whilst bullfinches and gadwalls are potentially easy to see it can be harder to spot some of Moors Valley’s other residents. Hobby hawks (Falco subbuteo) normally arrive it this country in late April. They are very fast in the air, catching and eating dragonflies in flight. With a choice of 26 types of of dragonfly and damselfly on their menu at the Park it is perhaps not surprising that they have bred in the Forest. Another more unusual sighting is the Nightjar (Caprimulgus europaeus). It

TWMD March 2012 page 30

is common between May and August although you are more likely to hear the churring calls of these noctural birds than spot their well-camouflaged foliage. With nestcams to enable visitors to watch chicks grow and fly, and a selection of bird related events and activities including nest box building and dawn chorus walks, there is real enthusiasm for all things ornithological at Moors Valley and visitors are encouraged to report any sightings. These are then all recorded by the Rangers who send monthly reports to the British Trust for Ornithology which also rings the Park’s cygnets each year, allowing the Rangers to follow their progress long after they have left the lake. For more information on forthcoming events visit the Moors Valley website at or call 01425 470721.

Put the Fab Factor into your Wedding Outfit What can be more special than your daughter or son’s wedding day? Such an important occasion demands a special outfit and Dorset has a really special boutique that can help. Fab Frocks of Westbourne has over 10 years experience in helping women find the right outfit for the big day. This award-winning boutique offers a choice of hundreds of stunning mother of the bride and groom outfits, all under one roof. The shop is like a treasure trove with special occasion collections from all over the world along with hats and fascinators to match. Owner Tracie Beardsley says: “We know how important it is for women to find a wedding outfit that looks amazing. We also know that modern women don’t want to look mumsie so we’ve sourced a stunning range of dresses and jackets that are stylish and contemporary.” She adds: “The other big factor is of course cost and we aim to cater for all wedding budgets. We have beautiful dresses and jackets which start at £165 for the outfit. Our fascinators start from £35. This is comparable to high street prices but you won’t see our collections on the high street and the last thing a mother of the bride or groom wants is to see another wedding guest in the same outfit as her!” Fab Frocks also believes in dressing real women. The shop stocks sizes 8 to 24 and offers a special order service on some collections up to a size 30. “We have really listened to what women want and have dresses which include features such as integral bra support or the option of bra-friendly straps,” explains Tracie Beardsley. “Some designs have cap sleeves, others have tummy-flattering ruching and most dresses are on or over the knee.” The spring/summer collection is now in at Fab Frocks and has something for everyone, wherever the wedding may be. Tracie Beardsley says: “Because weddings no longer take place just in a church, we have introduced some less formal outfits for mums. We have beautiful, floaty dresses in silks and cottons so they are cool

This gorgeous candy pink stripe outfit from Spanish designer Presen is available at Fab Frocks

to wear. These can be teamed up with a bolero and make a perfect outfit for a summer wedding on a beach or in a marquee. Great Value Local Opportunity for Children’s Fitness and Friendship I am writing to you to introduce the West Moors Youth Football Club. We are a local, well established, community based (not for profit) organisation working to provide local children with the opportunity to play football and receive training. All child members of our club receive weekly football coaching sessions and the play regularly in local league matches. At a time of great financial hardship for many families we are delighted to let you know that the average annual cost for a child to enjoy full membership of our club is only £125., which amounts to just over £2 per week. We feel that this offers fantastic value for money and provides a real opportunity for local children to enjoy exercise and friendship in a great family club environment.

TWMD March 2012 page 37

We have opportunities for all school year groups from Year 1 to Year 5 inclusive. (Special Call to Year 2 and Year 5 currently) All of our coaches are CRB checked and we affiliated to the FA through county level organisation. Their training sessions take place either on a Thursday evening between 6pm and 7pm or on a Saturday morning and the matches take place on a Sunday morning. Please make contact with myself for more information. I can be reached anytime on the numbers below and would love to hear from you. Yours sincerely, Rachel Clifford T: 01202 873985 Club Secretary M: 07729 322211 E:

We have volunteers who will bring books of your choice to your home every three weeks. For more details phone the library on 873272. We continue to offer ‘library gets lively’ sessions every 1st and 3rd Thursday of the month from 3pm–3.45pm for preschool children. Sessions include rhymes, stories and craft activities. Do come along and have some fun. A reminder to you that there are several different ‘surgeries’ at the library. On the first Saturday of the month you can come and speak to a district or county councillor. Chris Chope – local MP visits the library at various dates throughout the year – the next time he is available is 21st April and appointments can be made to see him. The

local Police Officers are also available to chat to the public at various times throughout the year – see posters for details. We do try to offer different events to you – this month we are very lucky to have Graham Hurley (best-selling crime novelist) visiting the library on March 15th. You may remember that he spoke at the public meeting last year as an advocate for the library to be retained. His new novel is published this month and he has agreed to give a talk on his way back from a publicity event in Portsmouth. Just before Christmas we were able to invite Carol Rivers a local best-selling author of family stories to the library – this event was well attended – so thanks to all. If you don’t yet belong to the library, membership is free – we don’t just offer books to borrow – come in and take a look.

Robin Redbreast and Jenny Wren In my article last month I made a whopping howler. Oh dear me! Several people have wagged their fingers at me because I spoke of the old farthing coin as having a robin on it! – and of course, it was a wren! So sorry!!! I really did know better. But thinking about Robin Redbreast and Jenny Wren made me ponder on the way we used to give lovely affectionate names to our birds and animals. It’s a pity we don’t use them still. The redbreast was given the name Robin, and this has become the standard name for him – but rather s a d l y, ‘ J e n n y’ h a s b e e n a l m o s t forgotten. The wren’s preposterous scientific name, Troglodytes troglodytes was foisted on it because of its habit of getting into little holes: and this name is derived from the two Greek words trogle, a hole, and dyein, to get into. Jack Daw has had his two names linked together to produce the standard dictionary word for him: ‘jackdaw’. And the same has happened to the magpie, for the ‘mag’ part of this was formerly a girl’s name – a shortened form of ‘Margaret’. Yet another first name which survives is Tom tit – and the word ‘tit’ is of Norse origin, meaning ‘small’, as in ‘titmouse’ and also our word ‘titbit’ Rather amusingly, the Americans prefer to spell this as ‘tidbit’ as a result of their absurdly misplaced prudery (no, don’t ask me to explain!).

TWMD March 2012 page 42

The martin really is Martin – a first name being used as a common noun. No one quite knows why this is, but some have guessed that it’s because these birds fly south around the time of Martinmas (11th November) and reappear in March (the month of Mars). Of course some birds have names which are picturesquely self-evident: the wagtail, the flycatcher, the sparrowhawk, the warbler, the tree-creeper, the waxwing (which has small appendages on its wings, resembling red sealingwax), the chaffinch (which searches for food among chaff), the woodpecker, and the nightjar (which makes a curious ‘jarring’ or whirring noise at night). In fact, the nigh tjar has sei zed countryfolks’ imaginations to such an extent that it has been given a host of other names: ‘night-churr’, ‘eve-churr’, ‘eve-jar’, ‘churnjar’, and ‘jar-owl’. Even its odd scientific name, Caprimulgus europaeus, reminds us of the weird old medieval belief that it actually sucks the udders of goats! (from the Latin words capra, goat, and mulgere, to milk.

Saturday, March 03, 2012 13:01 Black Magenta Yellow Cyan

Find us online at Nightjars, being nocturnal and noisy, have attracted strange folklore tales too – not only that they suck goats, but also that they are witches in disguise and can be shot only by a silver sixpence; and there was a Yorkshire superstition that they are the souls of unbaptised children, doomed to fly perpetually in the air. Nightjars are now so rare that in 2006 twenty thousand new homes which had been planned to be built across 300 square miles of south east of England, were put on hold because the area was the home of the nightjar, the woodlark, and the Dartford warbler. As a result of this ban, developers claimed to have lost millions of pounds and at least forty jobs had to be cut! Birds are important!

But to return to the robin, a charming old legend tells how he gained his red breast when he tried to pull a prickle out of the Crown of Thorns as Jesus hung on the cross. And as for little Jenny Wren, she was always believed to be Robin Redbreast’s wife! An extremely widespread old rhyme put it thus: The robin and the wren Are God Almighty’s cock and hen.
