Flock to Poole Harbour
January is traditionally a dark and dismal month, but for over-wintering birds, this is a busy time of year, and Poole Harbour is one place we can guarantee will be bursting with (bird) life. During late summer and autumn birds start arriving back onto the Brownsea Island lagoon to over-winter. The unique location of the lagoon means it provides shelter and food sources in abundance, but its shallow waters mean it’s also still accessible for birds when the rest of the harbour is under deeper water. It’s also a thoroughfare for birds flying from far flung corners of the globe, who use the lagoon to rest and eat before migrating to other winter habitats. In the past we’ve recorded rare sightings of the semipalmated sandpiper, and in October we were treated to a sighting of the small sanderling visiting from its arctic breeding grounds. A favourite and frequent visitor to the lagoon is the spoonbill. For many years the spoonbill flock sizes have been building, and in 2014 it peaked to the largest flock of spoonbills ever seen in Britain, with 49 birds recorded in one flock. and easily identifiable guests are large flocks of waders, particularly avocets, which are distinguishable by their long blue legs and curved bill, perfect for si�ing through the mud for fish. They breed in east Anglia, France and Germany but the number seen on the Brownsea Lagoon is of international importance, where 1,200 or more can be seen in the winter. The black-tailed godwit breed in Iceland but can be seen through the year on Brownsea Island, with up to 2,500 visiting in the winter to feed on worms found in the lagoon. A unique partnership between Dorset Wildlife Trust, RSPB, National Trust and Birds of Poole Harbour has been set up to run boat trips around Poole Harbour during the winter months, so visitors can get a first-hand experience of the thousands of birds feeding and roosting on the Brownsea Island Lagoon, when the rest of the island is closed for winter. Russell & Charlie’s Alternative 3 Sleeps Raises over £1300! Russell and Charlie from Go Ape Moors Valley summited and slept on three of the UK’s highest mountains to raise over £1,300 for the John Thornton Young Achiever’s Foundation (JTYAF). The JTYAF is the nominated charity at Go Ape and Russell and Charlie are great supporters of the Foundation. They set out on the 557-mile journey from Dorset to Fort William in November and had selected Helvellyn, the 3rd highest peak in England, Aonach Beag which is second only to Ben Nevis and Glyder Fawr, the 5th highest mountain in Wales. The routes they had planned to the top of the peaks included ridges and scrambling, a great deal of which was at night. In addition to the climbs, three extreme sleeps provided the ultimate challenge. They began with their ascent of Aonach Beag, at 4,049ft. The weather conditions were horrendous with such strong winds that they nearly lost their tent! The next morning, they travelled to the Lake District to tackle Helvellyn (3,117ft), in rain and relentless gusting winds and finally to North Wales where Glyder Fawr presented them with more rain and 80mph winds. The weather conditions confronted Russell and Charlie with an even more demanding challenge than expected but they showed real courage and total commitment and determination to get the job done.

Care South renews partnership with AFC Bournemouth for fifth year Care South is delighted to renew its partnership with AFC Bournemouth Community Sports Trust.
Cherries winger, Marc Pugh and Head of Community Sport Trust, Steve Cuss visited residents at Care South’s Fairlawn care home in Ferndown, where they also met with the charity’s Chief Executive, Simon Bird, to officially announce the continued partnership, which is now in its fifth year. The partnership with AFCB encourages staff and residents of Care South’s care homes and Home Care service clients to participate in activities where they can meet players, enjoy coffee mornings and become involved in walking football and stadium visits. Marc Pugh, an integral member of the AFCB squad and ambassador for the partnership, spoke to the residents about the incredible start to the 2018/19 season AFC Bournemouth has had. Head of the Community Sports Trust, Steve Cuss said: “Care South residents always give Marc a fantastic welcome. He is a huge supporter of this partnership, and that’s what makes him such a great ambassador. He and the Community Sports Trust team are looking forward to visiting as many residents as their schedule allows, and showing his football skills to the residents and seeing a few of theirs.”

West Moors Lunch & Friendship Lunch The West Moors Lunch and Friendship club meets in St. Anthony‛s church hall every Wednesday from 11.00am until 3.30pm. We welcome anyone over the age of 60 living in West Moors to join us. Our day consists of arrival and chat, lunch at midday and a cup of tea, games or entertainment, tea and cake and last but not least a game or two of bingo. Our Christmas celebrations were very enjoyable and we give our thanks to the many local traders who kindly donated prizes for our Christmas raffle. We also thank some of the children from St. Marys first School for their beautiful concert which everyone enjoyed very much. Talbot Village Trust enables extension for MS Society Bournemouth Talbot Village Trust has donated a grant of £11,000 to the Multiple Sclerosis Society Bournemouth to fund the extension of its day centre.
The grant giving charity provided the Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Society with the funds required to construct a muchneeded extension onto the original Osborne Day Centre. The centre is used regularly as a meeting place for people with MS, their carers and volunteers. Members of the society also have access to physiotherapy, yoga and hairdressing facilities at the centre. The new extension has created the space for a private consulting room which is available to provide confidential one-to-one support. A disabled toilet has also been constructed within the extension, due to the growing number of people that use the centre on a weekly basis. Rod Slip, chairman of the MS Society Bournemouth, said: “We are so thankful to the Trust for choosing to donate to the centre and allow us to construct our extension. Before this project began we were restricted on the activities which we could host, but now we
have the extra space to strengthen our support services and activities offering.”
Russell Lucas-Rowe, Trustee of Talbot Village Trust, added: “As a Trust we are always looking to support charities, big and small, that play an integral role in the community. It has been so interesting to learn about MS Society Bournemouth and the essential work they carry out for people with MS in Dorset.” Talbot Village Trust meets biannually, and will be accepting applications for funding from both previous and new applicants in the area before the end of January 2019. Lighthouse School Partnership with Ferndown Middle School This year Ferndown Middle School has become a partner school with Poole Lighthouse. We are only one of nine schools to receive this honour. This gives the school a unique opportunity to work on a variety of exciting projects with Lighthouse and their partners over the school year. In November a group of year 8 pupils attended Othello. After the show they were interviewed by the Lighthouse and representatives of the theatre company to create a blog and critique of the play for social media and to provide feedback for the Theatre Company. The Merchandise stand, designed and made by pupils from Ferndown Middle School last year, was refurbished and adapted and will be used from the middle of November to promote and advertise this year’s pantomime at Lighthouse. It will then go back to its ‘day job’ as the Merchandise Stand over the Christmas Pantomime season. It is Lighthouse’s 40th Anniversary this year and 17 pupils from year 7 and 8 have been involved in a project commissioned by Lighthouse to commemorate this event. We also approached Arts University Bournemouth (AUB) to help us with this commission and have secured the services of five final year illustration students. The brief is to create an exhibition illustrating some of the key events from its 40 year history. Lighthouse provided us with scrapbooks of memorabilia, artefacts, news stories and events the students chose an event and have illustrated this. A project like this would certainly benefit from the services of a professional illustrator
and we had the amazing opportunity to work with Martin Brown. Martin has been the illustrator for the ‘Horrible Histories’ books for the past 25 years, he is also a writer and cartoonist, and joined us at school for the day. He gave our students and the students from AUB a drawing masterclass and then spent the day inspiring, helping, advising and sharing his talent of bring history alive through his illustrations and cartoons with the pupils. This day was followed up with a visit to the Arts University where the pupils completed their artwork and illustrations. Martin also joined us at the University where the pupils worked alongside the undergraduate students to create some excellent work. The results can be seen at Poole Lighthouse from early December until February 2019. The pupils were a credit to the school and Martin wrote a complement slip describing them as “Talented, motivated and fun students who made me feel totally welcome” and “I had a BRILLIANT day”.

West Moors Flower Group In December we had a delightful morning with Jo Richards showing us some amazing designs for Christmas her title was “All that Sparkles”, with lots of stunning flowers and lots of baubles, and of course sparkles. During the morning we had mince pies with our coffee. On 16th January we will be having a coffee morning when we will be have a wonderful Tombola. And a quiz to get the brains working overtime. On Your Plot Planning veg for the year ahead If you’re new to veggie growing then this is the ideal time to start planning for the year ahead. Think about what space you have available for your crops and plan what you would like to grow and where.
Jobs for January:-
• Plan your crops • Protect crops against the cold and from pests such as pigeons • Sew le�uces indoors • Start rhubarb crowns Gardening may be the last thing on your mind in the cold weather but this is the perfect time to plan what to grow and where this season. It’s easy to get carried away when looking at catalogues or impressive displays of seed packets - but remember that it only makes sense to grow what you are likely to eat! If that still leaves you with a list that exceeds the space available then it may be wise to trim back on crops that take up a lot of space or are easily and cheaply available from local sources (potatoes perhaps?). Think about concentrating on plants that will crop quickly allowing the space to be used again. Remember also that you can use patio containers and grow bags to add extra growing space. Once you have your list split your available space into 3 (or 4) areas and then group your crops together by family so that they can be rotated around the areas in a 3 or 4 year cycle. Group the cabbage family together, then the onion family along with the pea and bean family, and finally potatoes, tomatoes and the carrot family. This is a great time of year to seriously consider making some raised beds, if you don’t already have them. Make sure that they are not too wide for you to easily reach the middle from either side and that there is sufficient room
for easy access all the way around. The deeper you can make them the be�er and higher beds will mean less bending when you are planting out seedlings, harvesting or weeding. If you have large areas of bare soil, awaiting planting, then you may like to think about covering them with black plastic, or cardboard, to protect the soil against the harsh January weather. Crops still growing, such as purple sprouting broccoli, will benefit from protection against hungry pigeons - try covering with wire mesh, fleece, or some homemade bird scarers (try stringing up some old CD’s). For those who are keen to get sowing, you can try a few le�uces. Start off on a bright, sunny windowsill, thinning down when they are large enough to handle. Grow on in frost free conditions such as a shed, or polytonal before finishing off under cloches. If you haven’t already planted shallots then it’s not too late to think about it, but don’t put them in when the ground is too wet or they may rot. Start saving empty egg boxes ready to chit your seed potatoes before planting. Just pop them into the egg boxes, sprout end up in a cool but frost free place and wait for the shoots to appear. You’ll also find the boxes useful for starting tiny seedlings off in months to come as they grow they can be planted straight out with no disruption as the box will simply rot down. And finally, if you have space, you may like to think about starting off some new rhubarb crowns towards the end of January.

Return of longest running Docu-soap, Monkey Life, to our screens on Pick Monkey Life series 11 returned to our screens on channel Pick last month, with the much anticipated catch up of all the rescues and daily dramas at the world’s biggest primate rescue centre. Based at Monkey World, Dorset, the documentary follows Dr Alison Cronin and the team, as she rescues primates in need from around the world, and rehabilitates them into groups of their own kind. At the centre, they have a safe, stable home for life.
Capturing the day-to-day life of residents
The programme is one of the longest running docu-soaps on TV, as its former incarnation, Monkey Business first appeared on screens in 1998. Nicknamed by staff “Beast-enders”, the series won a place in the public’s hearts with its fascinating, and often tragic insight into monkey and ape rescues. Series 11 follows Alison to Lebanon and Turkey to rescue two guenons, a baby loris and a chimpanzee, while back in Dorset it captures the day-today lives of the 260 primate residents of Monkey World.

Filmed over a year, the series takes the viewer on an emotional rollercoaster, from the woolly monkey group celebrating new arrivals, to tense rescue operations, and the teams’ sad goodbyes to old friends too. Monkey Life series 11 will be shown on Freeview channel Pick at 6pm, every Sunday from 11th November 2018.

ROASTED ACORN SQUASH Ingredients for 4 servings: 1 large acorn squash ½ tsp smoked paprika 2 cloves garlic (minced) Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper ½ tsp mustard powder ¼ tsp onion powder 2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil 2 tbsp unsalted butter ½ red onion 1 tbsp olive oil 2 oz (60 g) soft goats cheese Small handful fresh mint Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper
Method: 1. Preheat the oven to 400F/200c 2. Cut the squash into 6 wedges leaving the skin on. Remove the seeds and place onto a baking sheet skin side down with the flesh facing up. Drizzle the wedges with olive oil and add the butter then sprinkle over the paprika, garlic, mustard and onion powder and season well. 3. Cover the tray with foil and make sure that it is pressed down well so that the wedges are sealed in. Place the tray into the oven to bake for 45 minutes; they will actually be steaming in their own juices at this point. 4. Meanwhile slice the onion and place into a frying pan with the olive oil, gently sauté the onion slices on a medium low heat until they are caramelized, set to one side. 5. After 45 minutes of cooking remove the squash from the oven and remove the foil cover, place back into the oven for 10 minutes to roast, after ten minutes top each wedge with caramelized onions and some crumbled goats cheese and place back into the oven for a further 5 to 10 minutes until golden brown. 6. Remove from the oven and transfer to a serving plate, sprinkle with freshly chopped mint and serve.

Nuffield Health Bournemouth Welcomes Dorset’s Only Female Orthopaedic Surgeon Nuffield Health is ‘thrilled’ to welcome Dorset’s first female orthopaedic surgeon to its evergrowing team of leading consultants. Nikki Kelsall is an orthopaedic and trauma surgeon who specialises in foot and ankle problems, including diabetic foot conditions. Nikki offers a regular clinic at Nuffield Health Bournemouth Hospital tending to patients with any problems affecting their feet or ankles. Nikki often sees patients that suffer with bunions, curly toes, flat feet, foot or ankle pain, ulcers, ankle arthritis and Achilles disorders. As well as this, Nikki also commonly sees patients with soft tissue and bony foot or ankle injuries. As a once committed dancer and performer, Nikki knows first-hand how important it is to look after your feet. Nikki Kelsall, orthopaedic surgeon, said: “I was a dancer for 13 years before studying medicine, this helps me understand why amateur and professional performers and athletes, have a drive to get back on their feet quickly, no matter their age. “Recently I treated a man in his 70s who is a professional table tennis champion and required treatment for foot pain, but was desperate to be in tip-top shape before an upcoming match. Seeing him at the Nuffield we were able to schedule his surgery perfectly to get him match ready in time. I was delighted to be able to help him with this.” Nikki undertook her medical training in Bristol and Liverpool before moving to Bournemouth in 2003. Nikki added: “I’m very excited to be starting a regular clinic at Nuffield Health Bournemouth. I love building relationships with my patients and working at Nuffield gives me the opportunity and time to be able to do that in a relaxed and efficient environment. People underestimate the importance of their
feet until something goes wrong. Foot pain can affect every aspect of your life including simply driving to work or doing the shopping as well as high level functioning on a stage or the pitch.” In addition to her passion for treating patients with foot problems Nikki has also focused on medical education and attained her Masters in this subject in 2014. Nikki commented: “For me all the work I put in to educating more junior doctors allows me to focus not only on staying up to date myself, but also on finding ways to communicate complex subjects in an understandable way. This has changed the way that I interact with my patients, helping me to ensure they fully understand the nature of their problems and finding the best ways, with them, to improve their mobility.” David McNair, Hospital Director at Nuffield Health Bournemouth Hospital, said: “We are thrilled to welcome Nikki to the team and have the only female orthopaedic surgeon in Dorset on our staff.
