Dear Neighbours, Happy Valentines Day to all our wonderful Edition 150 readers! This is the time of year we sit and think about the sunshine, warmer times and the ability to get out more again. Stephen, myself and Hayden, (with Stephen & Debbie Corney Nellie the campervan of course) have started to do more walking, even on cold days, so long as it is dry. It is a great way to lift the spirits, get away from the TV and blow the cobwebs away. We had a wonderful walk to Moors Valley last week and even met friends on the way. What a success. So, if you are able to get out I do think it helps. Nellie also took us on a “Murder Mystery Walk” around Wimborne… in the dark! What fun that was. I do hope you have time for a read and better still try a “Treasure Trail” for yourselves. You can even win £100 if you enter their competition! West Moors Parish Council Jean Ware Legacy Award 2017 The Legacy Award was introduced in 2012 to mark the Olympic Games in London and has been very successful. In recognition of the commitment and hard work of the late Councillor Jean Ware, the Parish Council renamed the Legacy Award in her memory. The current purpose of the award is to recognise an exemplary young person living in West Moors and support them in Sport, Design, Drama, Music, or The Arts. The winning applicant is assessed not just on performance, but on their application and the mental strength that is required to go on and be the best that they can be in their chosen field. On Thursday 21st December 2017 prior to the parish council meeting, it was announced that this year’s recipient for the award is Charlotte Ayton aged 17. The Chairman of the Council, Cllr Penny Yeo, presented Charlotte with an engraved glass trophy which she will keep as a reminder of her of her achievement. Charlotte will also be able to claim up to £1,000 to help her progression in her chosen sport. Over the last 8 years Charlotte has been a member of Wimborne Athletics Club and amongst other disciplines, has completed in many long jump competitions. As well as the club, she has represented her school (previously QE Wimborne); the Dorset County; the South West Region and then in 2017 “the Midlands and South West” in the English School Games finals where she came third. For this an article was published in the December issue of the Stour and Avon Magazine. Charlotte trains four times a week all year round in Blandford Camp and Wimborne. This shows her dedication and commitment. National competitions take her further to Gateshead, Loughborough or Birmingham. As a result of her success Charlotte has been selected to attend monthly the AASE (Advanced Level Apprenticeship in Sporting Excellence) Programme in Bath. As she progresses she hopes to be invited to compete in more national events. The Parish Council anticipate this being just the beginning for Charlotte and wish her every success in the future. Applications are now open for the Jean Ware Legacy Award 2018. Ferndown Upper School thanks Jon Egging Trust Ferndown Upper school parents, students and staff wanted to say thank you to The John Egging Trust by raising £500 to support them in their marvellous work. Flt Lt Jon Egging lost his life whilst completing a display at the Bournemouth Air Festival in 2011 and his trust has been set up to enable staff and volunteers to work with young people on accredited programmes which will help to increase their self-confidence and enable them to reach their full potential.
Ferndown Upper School students have benefited from some of these programmes and have made comments such as “the teamwork day was amazing – I feel like I know what I can achieve now” and “I felt hopeless at times before but now I feel much happier and have made new friends”. Talking about Wildlife...
Birds of a feather... At about 4pm on a cold winter’s day, the sky may come alive with the shape of birds flocking together, with the sudden deafening sound of chitter chatter filling the air. One of wildlife’s most spectacular sights is approaching – a swooping and swirling murmuration of starlings. It may surprise you to know that starlings are actually becoming a less common sight in the UK, so seeing a flock of them is a wonderful thing. Other winter visitors flocking include birds from Eastern Europe and even species from the far northern regions, such as redwings and fieldfares from Scandinavia. So, why do birds flock? Well, why not! Birds can move easily and quickly, so they make the most of an annual trip to the UK, with an abundance of food, and a warmer climate to enjoy. Flocks of birds are also essential for their survival this time of year, as

their main advantage is literally their safety in numbers and they can distract predators with the sheer size of the group, making it hard for them to focus on just one bird when there’s so many, so close together. Large groups of birds can also stay warm, and hunt together, increasing their chances of survival. Dorset Wildlife Trust nature reserves are an excellent place to witness these special wildlife sights this winter, but you are also likely to see some activity in your own garden, by leaving out water and food for birds. Winter is a hard time of year to find food, so they need all the help they can get! A decade or so ago it seemed like all the celebrities were arriving to events in a Range Rover Sport, and since then the SUV market has exploded. Now nearly everybody wants one. Furthermore, almost every manufacturer is now making them. The Sport is not really a full-blown Range Rover. It’s cheaper for a start, and comes with five seats, but it does offer the option of seven. That said, the additional chairs are tiny and aren’t appropriate for fitting kids’ car seats. This is a lower, smaller ‘Rangie’, designed to appeal to a slightly less affluent, but still successful, crowd. And the focus has moved from out-and-out luxury to one that is more about power and pure on-road use. Of course, it’s a Range Rover, so it is well equipped, and the interior is of a high quality. The Windsor leather seats are impeccable - but the Sport is quite different to the full ‘Range Rover’. There are three diesels, two petrols, and even a new hybrid powertrain to choose from - and all are tuned primarily for clout. Only the entry level TDV6 feels a little
lacking, but equally I couldn’t recommend the powerful eight-cylinder petrol engine on offer - unless you own a small oil producing nation. This will really eat away at your cash reserves. Being designed for on-road action, rather than the full-blown Range Rover’s off-road capability, the Sport comes with optional air suspension. This keeps it comfortable and composed, even when cornering hard. The issue with driving it fast is more the size than the capability of the car. Britain’s most enjoyable roads are just a bit too small to be throwing a two-tonne SUV around, however good it might be. The Range Rover Sport is a status symbol, a luxury cruiser, and an enjoyable car to drive hard. But it’s expensive to buy and run - especially with its more commanding engines. And it’s not certain that the new hybrid unit can deliver on the claimed figures. Nevertheless, those who want one won’t be put off by such trivial matters.

Expanded programme of garden-based events adds to Knoll Gardens’ naturalistic appeal An expanded programme of more than 50 events is planned by Dorest-based Knoll Gardens in 2018. Well known for its popular grass masterclasses, this year sees the addition of guided walks, wildlife events and art, craft and photography workshops, as well as Knoll’s first musical afternoon. All events are very much garden-based and run right through to December 2018. Knoll’s event programme starts on Saturday March 17 with a mini-masterclass on preparing grasses for stunning summer effect, followed by a willow weaving workshop on March 24. In April, events include a guided walk looking at the differences and many similarities between Knoll’s garden environment and the adjoining heathland on Tuesday 24; a bat walk on April 26 and a rather special ‘concert’ on April 28, with the sound created by amplifying the noises of plant materials including rattling seed pods and cacti needles plucked by toothpicks. Part of the Bournemouth Emerging Arts Fringe festival, musical ensemble Gerauschheller will provide headphones for this unusual sound performance, to create a new meditative experience in the garden. Knoll Gardens’ owner Neil Lucas said, “Alongside our horticultural programme this year will see Knoll running arts and craft sessions, outdoor yoga, and our popular monthly toddler group ‘Bugs and Buds’. We are also hosting some rather special wildlife days later in the year bringing together national experts, our own volunteers and members of the public. We hope to encourage more people to visit us, spend some time in our relaxed environment and find out about the many benefits of our naturalistic gardening style.”

The Adventures of Nellie The Dorset Publications Camper Van It was a chilling dark winter’s night. We arrived at Walford Mill Craft Centre all wrapped up with scarves, gloves and torches, ready for our “Murder Mystery” walk. Who did it? What with? These were the allimportant questions and we had just 2 hours to follow the clues and discover the culprit. Would we solve the Mystery in the Vestry? Ivana Cramp had been a keen member of the Minster Choir for years. She had recently come into a large inheritance when her body was found. Was this a deed of greed… or because Ivana had an overpowering,

flat voice? We were about to find out. This is all fiction of course but we really got into the ‘spirit’ of things. Nellie had inadvertently come across “Treasure Trails” while surfing the internet one evening. She is getting very clever as you can see! These trails are described as ‘the fun way to explore’ and can be purchased online at www.treasuretrails.co.uk or often in tourist information offices. There are a series of clues which take you all around a particular area, giving you facts and some history about local sites, whilst you find the answers to each piece of evidence and finally eliminate all but one name and the weapon used. At that point you have the guilty party! There are many places to explore and it is a great way to get to know somewhere. Not all are murder mystery trails, so have a look and

see if there is one where you live or are visiting. It really is a fun way to get around! There were twelve of us taking the challenge that night, wanting to solve the mystery. We tried to guess from the list of people we were given, who ‘did it’ before we started. Julie got it right! How did she know I wonder… Was she really an accomplice? Now Nellie’s imagination was running riot and she was just taking this too far. I have had words with her. It was so much fun. Some of the clues do need some deciphering, others are more straight forward, but each step takes you further and further around the town. Wimborne is a fabulous place to shop and visit. The Minster looming up to the sky right in the town centre, the Jubilee Gardens, the old grandiose school house now housing flats for local residents, the River meandering through, the Quarterjack on the West Tower, with his brightly uniformed grenadier, who still strikes the quarters every

hour, day and night, the more modern statue of a skateboarder. What a wealth of interest to see. Even in the dark! You do not have to do this walk in the dark of course, but Nellie likes to be different and it all added to the ambience of our quest. The bright torches were useful to say the least. We solved the mystery! After all that investigating we were quite exhausted. Like Nellie we are getting on a bit now… Time for something to eat and drink. We had actually booked a carvery at the Bridge House Hotel in Longham. Delicious and great value, Nellie highly recommends it in fact. Probably because you can pile up your plate and go back for seconds. You don’t get thighs like that on lettuce leaves… Well we can safely say that Ivana from the Choir can rest in peace. Nellie isn’t giving you the answer as you could find out for yourself who did it… Where will Nellie take us next? By Debbie Corney

It's never too soon to get children interested in gardening and where their food comes from. Even the fussiest child should be prepared to try a warm, sweet strawberry or raspberry straight from the plant or a handful of peas out of the pod (my Dad often wondered why half of his pea crop had suddenly disappeared although I'm sure he had his suspicions!) At any time of the year, children can start to understand the concept of things growing from seed if you give them a packet of cress seeds and, although they can be grown in a shallow tray, make it even more fun by saving the shells from
their breakfast boiled eggs that have had their tops cut off. Draw a face on the eggshell and fill with peat free compost or even moist kitchen roll and sprinkle with seeds. When it grows the little egg man will have a mop of green hair that they can snip and eat. In the spring, let them have a competition growing the tallest sunflower by learning how to feed and water them. They can keep some dried out seeds for next year and feed the rest to the birds in winter. Although they might shy away from anything green on their plates, they might find plenty of chopped chives, basil, marjoram/oregano and/or thyme only improves their favourite pizza or Bolognese sauce.

Local Music Scene There’s nothing quite like live music. Whether you see an artist you’ve never even heard of or a band you know inside out, a concert is a brilliant experience and seeing a local band makes for a great lowcost night out. Supporting the emerging music scene is hugely important, and with music edging towards mass production, it’s refreshing to hear something new and authentic. Dorset has it’s own array of independent music venues, hosting great emerging artists new to the music scene.

Guide Dogs is appealing for dog-loving volunteers
If you work and can’t have a dog of your own then this is a perfect solution, or maybe you are retired and would like a part-time dog? We are recruiting boarders living in the West Moors area. Boarders look after our dogs in training for a period of between 10 to 26 weeks, in their own home during the evenings and weekends. During the day they need to be with the trainer, so would need to be dropped off to a local point and picked up again, Monday to Friday. Tastes so good... Steak and Sweet Potato Chips
February is the month of love. And a beautifully cooked steak is a wonderful way to have a romantic meal a deux, simply and easily. It’s not that hard to dish up a fabulous supper that is sure to please if you follow the simple instructions.
Ingredients 2 x 200g sirloin steaks 350g sweet potatoes 1 tbsp rapeseed oil 50g bag mixed spinach, watercress and rocket Handful of cherry tomatoes 1/3 cucumber, sliced 2 spring onions Coarse ground black pepper. For the dressing 1 tsp balsamic vinegar 2 tbsp rapeseed oil ½ small garlic clove, crushed

Preheat oven to 200c. Half fill a medium saucepan with water and bring to the boil. Add in the potatoes once chopped and cook for 4 minutes. Drain and return to the saucepan. Pour the oil over and season with a little black pepper. Toss until the potatoes are all lightly coated with the oil and seasoning. Tip the potatoes onto a baking tray and cook for 15 minutes. Turn them all then cook for a further 10 minutes or until crisp and golden. Whilst the chips are cooking, prepare your steak. Trim off any hard fat and then rub all over with the remaining oil. Season with 1 tsp coarsely ground black pepper. Using a griddle or non-stick frying pan, put over a high heat and then add the steaks. Cook for about 2 minutes each side or done until your liking. Set aside and mix the salad leaves, cucumber, chopped spring onions into a bowl. Whisk the vinegar, oil and garlic together. Lovingly lay out the chips and steak onto your plates and add the salad to one side. Drizzle with the dressing just before serving.
