Dear Neighbours, It is that very festive time of year again. Yes already! We have the whole family coming Edition 160 for to stay for a few days and I am really looking forward to it. What are your plans? A luxury holiday away (oh that sounds amazing), a big family gathering or just some time on your own? Whatever you Stephen, Debbie & decide to do, Stephen and I Hayden Corney hope that you can relax, have some Christmas cheer and ponder over the last year, whilst looking forward to a bright new start in 2019. Setting goals for a New Year can be quite refreshing. Do well with that one!

Thinking Green!

Sustainable living seems to have moved higher up on the news agenda’s in 2018. This year there won’t have been many of us who haven’t seen an image of a beach, home or away, li�ered with plastic, or a beloved marine creature wrapped up in plastic, inside and out. This raises the allimportant question: what can we do about it?

Being ‘green’ and caring for the environment isn’t easy – if it were, we wouldn’t be in this situation. The plastic that pollutes our seas exists because it’s made our lives easier in some way.

For some of us, changing our habits to move to an alterative may seem more inconvenient or expensive a�er years of taking the ‘easy option’ which has been given to us. But there are things we can do in our daily lives which take li�le or no effort and could actually save you money in the process.

1. Reduce single-use plastic: Say no to drinking straws, say no to single use plastic bags and say no to plastic bo�les. Did you know some of these items can hang around for over 500 years before they start to break down? Buy a reusable water bo�le, go without the straw or buy a material shopping bag you can use time and time again.

2. Composting: Not only is composting your food scraps great for reducing waste, but it’s also beneficial for your garden and its

wildlife. Many councils offer a food waste collection bin – if you have one, make sure you use it!

3. Seafood sourcing: Do you know where your seafood is coming from? 90% of global fish stocks are either fully or over-exploited. Use the Good Fish Guide to find out which fish are the most and least sustainable before you make your purchase. www.mcsuk.org/goodfishguide/ search 4. Replace your coffee cup: Not all takeaway coffee cups are recyclable, so why don’t you help cut down on the waste and get your own reusable coffee cup? Some cafes will give you a discount for doing so – in DWT’s Fine Foundation Chesil Beach Centre and Lorton Meadows Conservation Centre, receive a 10% discount on your coffee or tea!

This will be the first Christmas since my partner and I separated and we are struggling to agree on contact arrangements for our children.

For most parents, arranging contact with the children over the Christmas period can be a very simple process with both parents being able to agree to the times and dates. However, unfortunately in some cases this is not so simple and agreeing contact with your ex -partner can be very difficult.

There are no definite rules as to how, or when, Christmas contact should take place, each case is different. However, the key consideration is ‘what is best for the children’ and perhaps in some cases it is appropriate to ask what the children would like.

It is always best for parents to be proactive to plan contact over the Christmas period sooner, rather than later by either discussing the plans directly, or in writing. Think about alternating Christmas so the children will be with mum on Christmas one year, and with Dad the next. Alternatively consider dividing Christmas Day between both

parents to allow the children to see both.

Communication is key to making arrangements, try to put your differences aside and work together. If you cannot communicate directly with your partner, then seek help from a family lawyer who can assist you with this.

If in the unfortunate event contact arrangements cannot be agreed, then both parents may wish to consider family mediation, where a trained mediator will be present to help guide you towards a mutual agreement. If mediation cannot assist and all other avenues have been exhausted then you need to seek the help of a Court, however, please be aware this will be timely and costly.

Parley First School gets new play equipment thanks to Tesco Ferndown and John Thornton Young Achievers Foundation The pupils at Parley First School are enjoying their fabulous new Woodland Play Equipment thanks to the Bags of Help scheme at Tesco Ferndown and the John Thornton Young Achievers Foundation (JTYAF).

The JTYAF applied for funding from the scheme where the money raised by the sale of carrier bags is being used to fund thousands of local projects. Customers ‘vote’ for their chosen charity and the charity with the most votes wins £4000, second place £2000 and third place £1000.

The JTYAF is delighted to announce that thanks to their supporters they were lucky enough to receive the top prize of £4000, which has made a huge impact on the lives

of hundreds of children at Parley First School. This fantastic new equipment has provided an inspiring and challenging area where the children can develop a range of physical skills. Part of the drive at the school, to keep the children fit and active and it is certainly having the desired effect.

The new play trail is hugely popular with all the pupils.

The JTYAF and all the children at Parley First School would like to pass on their thanks to everyone who popped a blue token in the box for this exciting project.

West Moors Lunch & Friendship Lunch The West Moors Lunch and Friendship club meets in St. Anthony‛s church hall every Wednesday from 11.00am until 3.30pm.

We are thinking of Christmas now; our Christmas Lunch will be on 19th December and we will be decorating a tree which will be on show in St. Martin‛s URC at the Christmas Tree Festival on 5th – 8th December.

Last year there was a lovely show of trees and well worth a visit to see them this year.

Before that we have visits from a concertina group, Tony and Giant Scrabble and Roy Charles on 19th December, our last day before the Christmas break. We will return on 9th January 2019. We wish everyone a very Happy Christmas and best wishes for the New Year.

Keeping it in the (Lions) family Last month saw the enrolment of two new members to the Wimborne and Ferndown Lions Club which brought the total of new members enrolled this summer to four and the club membership to 22.

It has indeed been a bumper summer in more ways than one.

The picture shows new members Lena Garrett and her partner Daniel Whittle, with other Lions watching as Daniel is “badged up� by Lion Ken Taylor. The other new members are Jane Beck and Roger Male.

It is worth noting that all four have helped to bring the club average age down significantly.

This enrolment was a very special occasion as Daniel is the son of Lions legend Albert, who was a founder of the club in 1969 and served as a Lion for 48 years until his death in October 2016.

Apart from being a champion speed skater in his youth, Albert held all the major offices of the club, being elected president three times and district governor at one time.

West Moors Flower Group In November we welcomed back Carole Norman who gave us a fun morning and made us all laugh. Her designs were lovely using beautiful owers, her title was IT TAKES TWO. Our Demonstration for December is always special as it is a Christmas demonstration full of glitz and glitter. Jo Richards will be visiting us on the 12th of December, it is always a week early because of Christmas, her title is A LOT OF SPARKLE. Mince pies will be served with coffee during the morning.

GUIDE Composting

No garden can have too much compost and rich, fertile soil is the key to great vegetables and plants. In these days of fortnightly bin collections (and the threat of slop buckets for our kitchens) why leave kitchen waste to fester in your wheelie bin when it can be put to good use?

Find a corner somewhere in the garden to start a compost heap or, if space is limited, many councils offer bins for the purpose at reasonable prices. If building your own bin, it's best to put it on a soil base which will attract worms to start work on the heap. You could use old planks of wood or chicken wire supported by posts in each corner. This works well as it is important that air can get in to help the process.

You need a good mixture of material to make good compost. If you just put in grass cuttings you'll end up with a foul, soggy mess so they should be mixed with shredded newspaper, pruning clippings (not the really woody stems)

and even cardboard. Annual weeds can go in as long as they haven't gone to seed but avoid perennial weeds like dandelions as even the smallest piece of root will produce another plant. Almost all vegetable waste from the kitchen can be used, but avoid meat, fish and cooked food as these may attract rats etc. Use crushed eggshells, used teabags, used kitchen towels and fruit and vegetable peelings. Keep the mixture damp.

The aim is to end up with something that is dark, crumbly and sweet smelling and alive with worms. If you wanted to hurry up the process, you can buy accelerants from hardware shops and garden centres but a cheaper and just as efficient method involves collecting urine, diluting it with water and wetting the heap with it. Well, what do you imagine our ancestors used?

Naturally good...

CURRIED CELERIAC SOUP WITH PARSNIP CHIPS Ingredients for 6 servings: 2 medium sized celeriac (celery root) ½ a white or yellow onion (diced) 2 sticks of celery (diced) 1 clove garlic (minced) 50 g unsalted butter 1 litre vegetable stock 250 ml double cream 1 tsp medium curry powder Pinch of smoked paprika Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste 1 small parsnip 6 tbsp. crème fraiche

Method: 1. Use a sharp knife to remove the rough outer skin of the celeriac and then wash to remove any dirt.

2. Cut the celeriac into 1 inch cubes and place into a large heavy bottomed saucepan along with the diced onion and celery and cook on a medium heat with the butter for approximately 5 minutes without allowing it to color. This helps to release the flavors of the vegetables.

3. Next add the vegetable stock and bring to the boil, then reduce the heat and continue to simmer for approximately 20 minutes until all of the vegetables are tender.

4. While the soup is cooking add the curry powder and paprika.

5. Once the vegetables are fully cooked remove the pan from the heat and use a stick blender to puree the soup until thick and creamy. At this point stir in the cream and taste the soup for seasoning, make sure you add the right amount of salt and pepper to help bring out the flavors of the soup.

6. If you like your soup a little spicier, then add some more curry powder.

7. To make the parsnip chips peel the parsnip and then use a vegetable peeler to slice the parsnip into thin long strips, deep fry in hot vegetable oil for 2 minutes until crispy and then drain onto paper towels and season with a little sea salt.

8. Place the soup back on the stove for a couple of minutes to make sure it’s piping hot.

9. To serve spoon the soup into bowls and then drizzle with a generous spoonful of crème fraiche and top with a sprinkling of parsnips crisps and freshly chopped parsley or micro shoots.
