Dear Neighbours, It is that busy, exciting time of year again. Can you believe it? I am really Edition 116 not at all ready, but it will all happen whether I get a move on or not, so I guess I had better get cracking! I also have a one of those ‘big’ Birthdays coming up...sushhh...it is the big 50 and we are having a Stephen & Debbie Corney party to celebrate. It is a good excuse to let our and our son Hayden hair down for the evening. Having been ‘accused’ all my life of being way older than I am, (it all started at the age of 15 when a policeman said I was endangering my daughter’s life by not having lights on our bikes. This was in fact my nearly 8 year old sister at the time...) it was really refreshing to have two people look surprised when they heard my age recently. But maybe they thought it should be my 60th Birthday?! We have to laugh don’t we. Well now is the time to finalise the house, finish the decorating, get the new cooker, set up the spare room for guests, and yes... cook the turkey! Family and friends is what this time of year is all about, whatever your beliefs, so I do hope all goes well for you and you get some time to relax and make the most of your time off. If you know of a club or society that needs help or support in any way, then please let us know as we promote local community activities for free. Remembrance Day Parade
As we all know this is the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of hostilities which came to be known as the First World War. Remembrance Day is part of modern British life, culture and heritage. For West Moors it was Sunday 9th November. The Parish Council and the Royal British Legion, invited all public to join together to commemorate the original Armistice of 1918 which signaled the 'stilling of arms' and led to the formal end to the First World War (eventually signed in 1919) at the War Memorial. “For those who gave their precious all when asked to answer their Countries’ call we gathered together in West Moors town to pay respects with Wreaths laid down. Prayers were read and songs were sung our fallen men, mentioned one by one they fought for our freedom, with honour so great, to give our thanks, it is never too late. So we wore a poppy on Remembrance Day and at eleven we stood and prayed. The Legions, who paid with their lives back then, we’ll never forget you, each one now our friend” Anon
After we observed “The Last Post” along with the rest of the Nation, the Parade marched beautifully out of the village but their spirit and inspiration remained. The level of attendance was profound and the strength of our Community was warming. Many thanks go out to those persons involved with the organisation of, what was a very successful and poignant occasion.

Nicky Campbell Ann Montini meets Radio & TV star Nicky Campbell who reveals all about his new album “We’re Just Passing Through“, which is out now. Nicky – “The album is called ‘We’re Just Passing Through’ and this is because it’s what we both felt when writing the album... it’s been fun, but also personal too.” Ann - The great Kate Robbins, how did you two get together? Nicky – “I sent her my first album, she loved it, and we started talking ideas and songs and, then bingo, we were writing which is wonderful.“ Ann – How have your peers been with you since this new career? Nicky - To them it’s new, but to me it’s something I have been doing all my life really, but yes, a great many are pleased for me, and the rest, well I will let the music do the speaking.“ Ann – What is your favourite track on the album so far? Nicky – “We both love ‘Tell My Heart’. It was a fun song to record, and the lyrics well they do tell a great story, and many people have fallen in love with this track already.“ Ann – You recently appeared on “Who Do You Think You Are“ enjoy the experience? Nicky – “It was a great experience and makes you very humble really... learning about your past is a great thing, I would highly recommended it, and it kind of places you as a person.” Ann – Now your hit show “Long Lost Family“ very emotional too. Nicky – We are just very privileged to be present at this very private time for some of these families, and yes you do get caught up in the moment, but I try to hold back, as its they and not I the focus should be on.“
Ann – Your favourite kind of music is…? Nicky – “I like so many styles from big band to jazz and even punk, but for me I think that whole era of Rat Pack, style and great songs, for sure is the area you would want to return too...” Ann – If you could go back in time and duet with someone, who would that be? Nicky – “Frank, Dean, Johnny Rotten, I would love to mix it all up... we are so lucky we have such a history here to dip into, so for me it would have to be a mega mix of voices.“ Ann – You appeared in the singings show “Just The Two of Us“ with soul legend Beverley Knight ... daunting? Nicky – “She is superb and well it was a worry, knowing I would have to sing with her, but she is a great teacher, and really imparted so much love and knowledge with the show... I was very lucky to have her with me.“ Ann – So what is next for you then? Nicky – “We hope to do some live shows with the new album, and then more of the same, radio TV and music, but yes always music, it’s such a part of my life. “

CQC assessment highlights safe and caring services “At follow up inspection we found that all services we visited were caring.” “We found a clear commitment to quality improvement at all levels of the organisation and more robust quality assurance processes.” “We found some exceptional examples of care and attention provided by staff at all levels and disciplines across the organisation.” “The trust has taken steps to ensure that patients received timely care and that they and their relatives were treated with dignity and respect.” Care Quality Commission These are just some of the many positive comments made by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) in its report about our services, after a follow-up inspection of the Royal Bournemouth Hospital in August 2014. All four compliance actions that were in place, following our initial inspection in October 2013, have now been lifted. Basil Fozard, Medical Director, said: “I would like to start by thanking colleagues for all of their hard work which has been recognised in such a positive way by inspectors. It reassures us that the improvements made over the past year are making a difference. “While it’s important that we do recognise the huge progress made in the past year, the follow-up inspection is part of a longer improvement journey to ensuring we provide consistently high quality care across all areas of our hospitals.” Leadership within the organisation has been a crucial focus for the Board of Directors in ensuring we provide quality care for all patients. Our nursing leadership is more focused with the appointment of 14 matrons. We have also appointed over 30 consultants since October 2013. We have been engaging with staff and patients to develop, and begin to embed, a new set of values. Our staff say they
feel better engaged, more supported and part of a learning culture. Together we are creating the right culture that promotes excellent care for every patient, every day, everywhere. Director of Nursing, Paula Shobbrook, added: “We would also like to thank our patients and the public for continuing to tell us when we get it right - this is appreciated by our staff – and when we could do better. This has informed our improvement and will continue to do so in the future as we make the changes that we need to. Over the last 12 months we have: • launched our pressure ulcer prevention and management strategy (PACT - Pressure Area Care Together). • focused on dementia training for our staff • more robust security arrangements are in place (in A&E) • improved management and flow of patients through the hospital • new clinics for emergency care • launched a new privacy and dignity policy which includes a set of pledges to our patients which are communicated on our wards • worked with Healthwatch Dorset to hear the experiences of patients and the public • improved Friends and Family Test scores from patients who are asked if they would recommend our hospital to their friends and family • used complaints and patients stories for learning and improving services • displayed positive and negative feedback on each ward together with what we have done in response to the feedback • Ward 22 became a short stay elderly care ward and has reduced the length of stay for patients by five days. Oakhurst Community First School pupils learn valuable lessons in infection prevention Year Two pupils at Oakhurst Community First School learnt all about germs and how to stop them spreading in a special workshop held by the Nuffield Health Bournemouth Hospital and AFC Bournemouth ‘Bug Busting’ team. Nuffield Health Bournemouth Hospital and AFC Bournemouth are visiting as many schools as possible in Dorset to deliver the unique ‘Bug Busters’ workshop in the hope local schoolchildren will learn how to stop common infections such as coughs and colds spreading, causing sickness and absence from school. Nuffield Health Bournemouth Hospital infection prevention lead Chris Tickner used UV powder and foam balls to demonstrate how easily bacteria can be transferred between people. After playing catch with the powdered balls, the students were challenged to wash their hands and put them under a UV light box to highlight any un-scrubbed areas.

After learning what makes bacteria potent, pupils were also treated to an interactive session with coaches from AFC Bournemouth’s Community Sports Trust team, playing games to show how easily bacteria can spread if hands are not washed properly. Sarah Terry, class teacher at Oakhurst Community First School, said: “The children had a fantastic afternoon and the practical way the session was delivered really helped get the message across. They are still talking about how to wash their hands properly to get rid of all the germs.” Chris Tickner of Nuffield Health Bournemouth Hospital commented: “At Nuffield Health Bournemouth Hospital we believe prevention of infection is better than cure. West Moors Lunch and Friendship Club
The West Moors Lunch and Friendship Club meet on a Wednesday in St Anthony of Padua church hall, Pinehurst Road. Members arrive in time for a chat and a look at the table sale of Christmas cards, paper, calendars, greeting cards, books and donated items before lunch. Following lunch and the raffle members have an hour of table games or entertainment followed by tea & cakes. We end the afternoon with one or two games of bingo. Recently we enjoyed exercises with Kim and the singing of Paul Spencer and now we are looking forward to Christmas with the West Moors Middle School singing us carols one week and the singing by the Wimborne and Ferndown singers on 17th December, our final Wednesday before Christmas. We reopen on 7th January 2015.

West Moors Painting for Pleasure The West Moors Painting for Pleasure Arts and Crafts Exhibition held in the Memorial Hall on 25th October was very successful. The hall was filled with paintings in all mediums, as well as pottery, knitwear hand made greetings cards and Christmas cards. Although the number of visitors was lower than at the 2013 exhibition, those that attended were very generous with their comments on the high quality of the work on display. Two new members have subsequently joined the club after visiting the exhibition so the club is up to full strength again. Moors Valley helps make memories As more and more families become reliant on technology for their entertainment Rangers at Moors Valley Country Park in East Dorset are using the same resources to encourage them to put aside their tablets and mobiles and go outside to make memories. ‘Safety’ is just one of the reasons often quoted for staying inside for family fun, along with the ‘stress’ of organising an outing and the ‘high cost’ of a day out. In fact, according to a recent poll for Britax, whilst nearly two thirds of the 2,000 parents polled recognise that outdoor fun is important in terms of building family memories, around one third don’t believe that taking their children outside is fun any more. Matt Reeks, Community and Open Spaces Manager at Christchurch and East Dorset District Council said, “The last two decades have seen childhood move indoors with many children unable to explore the unknown, have real instead of virtual adventures, and connect with their environment. “Concerns over child safety are understandable but a big part of outdoor play is all about learning to take calculated risks. If we take away that element of learning, as well as the opportunity to interact with the natural world, we risk raising a generation unable to meet challenges, care for our environment – or simply enjoy the wonders of the woods.” Rangers at Moors Valley Country Park and Forest, based in East Dorset, see at first hand the enjoyment experienced by the Park’s many visitors. They wanted to find a way to extend that enjoyment beyond the borders of the Park and encourage everyone to spend more time with their family outside. Their answer was to bring back the fun to outdoor play with a series of safe, stress-free activities many of which cost nothing to do and can be enjoyed in any back garden.
Every Friday a new, family-friendly activity is being posted on Twitter, Facebook and the Moors Valley website. The idea is that families can check it out in advance in time for some fun family time outside that coming weekend. Activities include simple games, activities and crafts and while some are seasonal, most can be enjoyed all year round, and the vast majority do not involved any complicated equipment of preparation. “Countryside Interpretation Ranger, Katie Davies said, “Our Family Fun Fridays are our way of helping families to get together outside, have fun and improve their wellbeing at the same time. We will be posting a new activity sheet every week for 12 months and ideas so far include snail racing, meeting a tree, making a leaf boat, den building and even creating smelly cocktails. It’s all about interacting with the environment and having fun at the same time. WEST MOORS FLOWER GROUP
Our very friendly group meets at the Memorial Hall at 10am. Visitors and new members are always welcome. Flower Group members enjoyed a demonstration by Jean Allcroft at their November meeting entitled "Swirls and Curls" and were intrigued by one arrangement featuring bath scrunchies which had been reshaped to make very exotic looking flowers! The demonstrator for the next meeting on 10 December will be Elizabeth Witcombe, with the club competition being titled "White Christmas". Coffee and mince pies will be served at the interval. New members are always welcome at our meetings on the 2nd Wednesday of each month at West Moors Memorial Hall 10am and we would be particularly pleased to see any men who would like to come along . West Moors Library News We invite all our readers and friends to join us for our Christmas Coffee Morning/quiz on Thursday 18th December from 10am – 11.30am. Mince pies and coffee and friendly chat – the library is more than ‘just books’ come in and discover more! Our monthly coffee mornings are ion the last Thursday of the month 10-11.30am. So far we have had a handful of people attend – don’t forget at each session we have a representative from a local group or society. Many thanks to Roger (Homewatch)Judy (Writers Group) and Catherine (Flower Group) who have all been present at one of the morning sessions. In January we welcome Daphne who represents Wayfinders, an information service for the over 50’s. Do come along and bring a friend. We have recently had a couple of learning workshops provided by the Skills and Learning Team. The first session we had was ‘drawing for pleasure and relaxation’and the second ‘card making’. These were free 2 hour sessions. This could become more
regular so keep an eye out for more information/ posters etc. NEW – Rhyme Time Every Thursday morning from 10.30-11.00. This is a lively session for babies and toddlers to enjoy and learn. Come along and meet other mums. ANCESTRY – Anyone interested in tracing their family history please see a member of staff. We have free access to the Ancestry site at the library and we can show you how to navigate it. KNIT AND NATTER – A friendly group of knitters always ready to welcome new people – enjoy easy banter over a cup of coffee every MONDAY 2 – 3.30 READING GROUPS – We currently have a list of people wishing to start up a reading group but we need a couple more to make it viable – anyone interested?? Community Speed watch (CSW)

Use of the public Computer The Parish Office welcomes you to come in and use the Public Computer to help with any problems or concerns you may have in regards to any highway complaints, street lighting, rubbish collections, overgrown trees or hedges and anything else that local councils deal with. Instructions to use this computer are available on request. Dorset Police wish to move the youth shelter from West Moors Youth Club to the Skate Park to reduce numbers of young people congregating in unsuitable locations so as to reduce the negative impact perceived by the local community.

It happens all the time. The way round it is to get a standalone policy before you go (you can even get an annual policy to cover the whole year's hire). If your passports nearly at renewal, do it now while you've plenty of time before you next go (you’ll get the extra months added on). It's one less thing to sort, and once it's done, you're good for the next ten years. While you're at it, check the 'valid by' date on your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) - if it goes before your next holiday renew it now. The big rule for renewing though is DONT GOOGLE - for both these, imposter sites unnecessarily charge you more than you should pay. Instead the official sites to use are www.gov.uk/ renew-adult-passport and www.nhs.uk/NHSEngland/ Healthcareabroad/EHIC.
Check the PAO number on your suncream before throwing it away. The period after opening (PAO) number will be on the bottle - many are safe to use up to 18 months later, provided they're stored right - so don’t chuck it unnecessarily. Got Euros, dollars or even colón left over from the summer? Changing currency back is very expensive, especially for small amounts. CURRIED CELERIAC SOUP WITH PARSNIP CHIPS Ingredients for 6 servings: 2 medium sized celeriac (celery root) ½ a white or yellow onion (diced) 2 sticks of celery (diced) 1 clove garlic (minced) 50 g unsalted butter 1 litre vegetable stock 250 ml double cream 1 tsp medium curry powder Pinch of smoked paprika Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste 1 small parsnip 6 tbsp. crème fraiche

Method: 1. Use a sharp knife to remove the rough outer skin of the celeriac and then wash to remove any dirt. 2. Cut the celeriac into 1 inch cubes and place into a large heavy bottomed saucepan along with the diced onion and celery and cook on a medium heat with the butter for approximately 5 minutes without allowing it to color. This helps to release the flavors of the vegetables. 3. Next add the vegetable stock and bring to the boil, then reduce the heat and continue to simmer for approximately 20 minutes until all of the vegetables are tender. 4. While the soup is cooking add the curry powder and paprika. 5. Once the vegetables are fully cooked remove the pan from the heat and use a stick blender to puree the soup until thick and creamy. At this point stir in the cream and taste the soup for seasoning, make sure you add the right amount of salt and pepper to help bring out the flavors of the soup. 6. If you like your soup a little spicier, then add some more curry powder. 7. To make the parsnip chips peel the parsnip and then use a vegetable peeler to slice the parsnip into thin long strips, deep fry in hot vegetable oil for 2 minutes until crispy and then drain onto paper towels and season with a little sea salt. 8. Place the soup back on the stove for a couple of minutes to make sure it’s piping hot. 9. To serve spoon the soup into bowls and then drizzle with a generous spoonful of crème fraiche and top with a sprinkling of parsnips crisps and freshly chopped parsley or micro shoots.
