Dear Neighbours, What an amazing summer we have had! I had a call from a very caring resident Edition 155 asking me to remind us all to leave water out for the birds as they desperately need it. Good idea, let’s help them. Congratulations to all those hard-working volunteers who helped put the West Moors Multi Activity Day together. There was a lot of Stephen & Debbie Corney competition that weekend with the finals of Wimbledon and the footie. The day was a great success, we certainly thoroughly enjoyed it. I hope you like our Parish Crier on the front cover with his ice-cream! The children are now off school for a few weeks so hopefully they are getting out and about and enjoying time with family and friends. Nellie would say that! Get out there and live life, she would exclaim. On that note the story this month is a tribute to her. We have had five fabulous years and unfortunate events have led to what you will read about. We do hope you have enjoyed her exploits each month. We look forward to welcoming Daichi, the Dashing Dude! It is also the 70th Anniversary of the NHS. Currently I have a friend in Poole hospital and I have to say from the ambulance service men and women to the nurses and the doctors they are all incredible. Very special people work to help others and I, on behalf of Dorset Publications, thank them for their true dedication and care. Scouting around West Moors The Hideaway (Scout Hall) has a new roof. No more strategically placed buckets to catch the drips...
A huge thank you to everyone in the village who has helped in some way to raise the £17,000 it cost whether that was buying a Duck Dash ticket, sponsoring one of our young people, attending a quiz night or social event or giving a donation. Now we are on to our next fundraising challenge: £11,000 to clad the building so we are completely damp proof. The summer term also means it’s time for our family camp. On a lovely hot and dry weekend in June we all set off for Woodcutts Scout HQ. Two days of tasks and challenges for all the family certainly brought out the
competitive streak in some! During the Saturday evening BBQ and campfire we held our AGM and we’re really grateful to 3 more parents who agreed to join our committee. The first job to do was helping at West Moors MAD so although we do have some official responsibilities there’s also lots of fun too. Marine Wildlife needs a wave of support
At Dorset Wildlife Trust we know summer is Marine Conservation Zones are established under the Marine and Coastal Access Act (2009) and are crucial to the protection of some of our most rare and threatened marine wildlife. Currently, there are 50 MCZs in the country, with more urgently needed to complete the network of Marine Protected Areas in England. As part of the current MCZ proposals, six out of the 41 proposed sites in the third and final tranche are in Dorset: Albert Field; Purbeck Coast; South of Portland; Southbourne Rough; Studland Bay and West of Wight-Barfleur. These cover a wide range of underwater landscapes and habitats, from deep, tideswept rocky cliffs to sheltered seagrass meadows. Wildlife found in or near these sites include: black bream, spiny seahorses and peacock’s tail seaweed. In 2013, three sites were designated as MCZ’s in Dorset: Chesil Beach & Stennis Ledges MCZ, South Dorset MCZ and Poole Rocks MCZ. Together, these areas represent an impressive and stunning range of submarine landscapes and habitats which are often less appreciated and more overlooked than their terrestrial counterparts.

However, the importance of not only the Dorset sites but all of those proposed to be included in the current tranche of MCZ, is huge. Due to the extent of the damage caused to our marine environments, time is now running out to reverse the significant losses already suffered, and increased protection is urgently needed. You can find out more about all 41 sites across England by visiting www. wildlifetrusts.org/mcz, and for more information about the proposal’s Dorset sites, please visit www.dorsetwildlifetrust. org.uk/mczs where you can also become a friend of the MCZ’s and get regular updates and information on the outcome of the public consultation for the third tranche. We’re also pleased to have recently re-opened the Fine Foundation Wild Seas Centre at Kimmeridge, next to one of the best rockpooling sites in Dorset. The centre has a new artificial rockpool, new information panels, and interactive virtual seabed, a new shop, and lots of events throughout the summer. Why is a Lasting Power of Attorney so important? Surely my spouse and children can look after me if I lose capacity? When discussing Lasting Powers of Attorney with clients I am often asked why these are necessary. Many people believe that should they lose capacity later on in life their next of kin can automatically take over the management of their affairs without any documentation in place.
A simple way to avoid this is to put a Lasting Power of Attorney in place. This allows you to choose people that you trust to manage your affairs if you are no longer able to do so yourself. You can make sure that both your finances and your health are looked after by deciding to put both Lasting Powers of Attorney in place.
Unfortunately, this is not the case. Although your spouse has some legal rights over property you own jointly together they can be restricted with what they can do with that property. For example, if you have a home together which is held in joint names, it would require both signatures in order that the property could be sold. If one party has lost capacity and is unable to consent to this then considerable delays could be caused with the transaction. They will not have the ability to deal with any bank accounts etc in your sole name.

The Trust Deed would set out the amount each purchaser contributed to the purchase price; the respective share owned; the contributions to outgoings, costs, insurance, decoration etc.; contributions to mortgage payments and what would happen if one party refuses to pay; agreement on how to value the property on sale; rights of refusal on a resale i.e. one party does not wish to sell or moves out remaining on the title and finally how the property or sale proceeds are to be distributed between the parties.
For varied reasons, (often economic), many people are now purchasing or investing in property, with relatives or friends and not just partners. It is vitally important to discuss at the outset what you all want to get out of the purchase; how this is going to be funded between you; how long you plan to live together or invest and what happens if one of you wants to sell your share of the property in the future or if one party dies. In order to best protect each parties’ legal and beneficial interest in the property it is advisable to hold your interests as ‘Tenants in Common’ either in equal or unequal shares (depending upon the sums contributed by each party). It is also advisable to draw up a ‘Trust Deed’, which would specifically set out how your respective interests in the property are to be held; how said interests would subsequently be dealt with upon any relationship breakdown, re-sale or death of any party.

Other considerations are additional Stamp Duty Land Tax payable upon a purchase where one or more parties already owns a legal or equitable interest in another property either in the UK or abroad and potential Capital Gains Tax or Inheritance Tax implications where property is transferred between parents and children.

What happens if you don’t have a Power of Attorney? Arranging a Power of Attorney before it’s too late is critical to avoiding heartache for friends and family later. None of us likes to think about a time in life when we’re no longer able to make our own decisions. But should that moment come, it’ll affect every part of your life – from your home to your finances to your medical care. It’s shocking to realise that as many as 1 in 3 over the age of 65 will suffer dementia, but of course, an unexpected accident can strike anytime. West Moors Lunch & Friendship Club The West Moors Lunch and Friendship Club meets in St. Anthony‛s church hall every Wednesday from 11.00am until 3.30pm. We have enjoyed a quiz, a beetle drive and music during July and when you read this we will be having our annual August break. Perhaps some of you will have visited our stall and had a go on the Tombola at the Fun Day on Fryer Field on 14th July. The Lunch Club will reopen on 5th Sept. and we will be looking forward to getting our brains working hard with Steve and Giant Scrabble the following week. We have visiting entertainment approximately every two weeks and play board games on the intervening weeks and, after tea and cake, we ďŹ nish every week with one or more games of Bingo.

Trudie’s Big Day Out As part of the NHS 70th anniversary celebrations, Trudie Spicer, a branch member of the East Dorset and Ringwood NHS Retirement Fellowship (NHSRF), won the Wessex Area NHSRF ballot to attend The Buckingham Palace Garden Party. On the big day Trudie travelled to London by train, accompanied by her grandson Andrew. Upon arrival in London Trudie was told that she would be taken by taxi to a surprise venue for lunch beforehand. Unbeknown to her, however, Trudie’s son in law, who worked for the owners of the Hotel, had arranged a wonderful reception at the Ritz for her! Trudie was met and treated just like a VIP, given a special goodie bag and after a lovely lunch she was taken by chauffeur driven Daimler to Buckingham Palace. Alas the Queen was not present but Trudie saw Prince Charles and Prince Edward. A fine finish to a wonderful day that Trudie will remember forever.

The Adventures of Nellie The Dorset Publications Camper Van Many of us have come to enjoy Nellie’s exploits over the years, 5 good years in fact. Playful in her mature fun-loving way, always ready to go somewhere new and have a go. She would laugh at herself with her long black skirts to cover up her rather large thighs and a silver grin that would bring a smile to everyone’s face. Family fun, excursions, exploring and seeing the bright side of life have been her passion. I did say the journey was interesting at the end of last month, so are you ready? Driving back from Wales… Well, we had literally just passed the “Welcome to England” sign, travelling at a mere 20 miles an hour when there was a sudden bang. We lurched forward. I yelled. We were hit again. The young girl in the car behind Nellie failed to stop, she just kept going. I yelled for a second time. Nellie was badly hit and I knew instantly she would not be repaired. The girl’s car was totally ruined, the engine would not start at all. After the police came to help, Nellie limped to the nearest service station and unfortunately on the back of a truck Nellie was taken to the “old van’s home”. It was very sad. If I say anymore we will all cry, and that is not ‘our Nellie’. No, Nellie is not one to give up easily and she has a Grandson in Japan who is coming over to replace her fun and frolics here on the South Coast. Nellie will be keeping a close eye on him of course because from what I hear ‘Daichi, The Dashing Dude’ as he is known (and for good reason), is a bit of a handful. Despite his Japanese upbringing, he has somewhat of an ‘Italian’ persona and likes the lady cars. Being the personality he is, he is having a ‘makeover’ (can you believe
Nellie with the Cerne Abbas Giant it?) before he arrives here in Dorset. Goodness knows how we will cope, but I am sure we will manage somehow. It was Nellie’s idea and you know what these stubborn older ladies can be like! When we tried to argue we just saw ‘the look’ from those headlights and we decided it was best to let her be right. We are all for an easy life. Daichi, which means ‘first grandson’ in Japanese, is taking his time (there is a lot of makeover going on) and will be with us in a couple of months. In the meantime we will take a look back at Nellie’s Golden Years… It all started in 2013. Stephen’s old car had finally given up and I had this idea to get a campervan to help Stephen not only carry all of out thousands of magazines each month, but also give us some family fun with a good excuse to get out and about. Having a young, very active boy of nine at the time, and being a somewhat ‘older Mum’, having the van meant we could all enjoy a day out. After all, Nellie’s whistling kettle satisfied my more relaxed way of life and the outdoor life let Hayden run around to his heart’s content. Stephen had the

39 best of both worlds. It got both of them off the computer too! As soon as we bought Nellie, she attracted attention. Five years ago there were less van’s like her on our English roads and the dark glass, with her roof up, her long black skirts and her silver smile seemed to draw people in. They were curious. That’s what gave me the idea to characterise her and write about where she took us. It was all a bit of fun and would hopefully make others smile. Her very first trip in June ’13 was to Cerne Abbas to see the naked Giant on the hill. Knowing Nellie now, some may see why that might be, she was always a bit cheeky! One of our favourite trips was to the Isle of Wight. Mum, Dad my sister, her husband and the three of us all went in convoy. Nellie was so excited she got on the earlier ferry and left my sister and brother-in law in ‘Lady J’ standing, waving, on the quay! We all met up again and had a fabulous week exploring the whole island. Fishing for the boys and Liz Earle’s Beauty Salon for us girls. We came out smelling better than the boys did, Nellie will tell you! Another great stay was had at Norden Farm near Corfe Castle. Fields, the wonderful sounds of our English birds, fishing again, fish and chips in Swanage, a picnic by the River at Wareham, what more can you want? Nellie took us to Cornwall last summer where Hayden competed in

Nellie ‘unpacked’ ready for the beach the Surf Life Saving Championships (I did say he was active didn’ t I?) where we got thoroughly rained on and had to buy a new awning. Camping at it’s best…? Following that was a wedding in Hull, so Nellie was packed with wellies, wetsuits and surf boards, next to wedding outfits, dainty shoes and a fascinator! All good fun and just shows how versatile Nellie really was. Ever ready, with a big silvery grin, for any occasion. If you had a favourite story please let us know. Phone, write or email. News from The Inner Wheel Club of Ferndown The Annual General Meeting held in June marked the end of a successful year for retiring President Maureen Billingham. The meeting began with a presentation of £600 to a representative of the Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance Charity. The money was raised through several fund raising activities including a Paupers Lunch, holding a collection outside a local supermarket, and more recently holding a “Treasure Hunt” stall at the recent “Fete in the Field” held at the King George V playing field in Ferndown. Other charities supported this year were Safewise, Southern Domestic Abuse Service and two overseas

charities, the Butterfly Appeal and the Andean Medical Mission. After the reports of club officers were given, Maureen thanked all her committee for their help this year and said she had thoroughly enjoyed her second time as President. New main ring attraction at this year’s Dorset County Show With just a few months to go until this year’s Dorset County Show, the organisers have revealed the new main ring attraction for 2018. Organised by Dorchester Agricultural Society, the show will take place from Saturday September 1 to Sunday September 2, at the Dorchester Showground. The two-day annual show attracts more than 60,000 people each year since it began in 1840, and boasts a variety of attractions, livestock, and fun for all the family. This year’s main ring attraction will be camel racing provided by Joseph’s Amazing Camels, which have been featured on Countryfile and also have been the stars of many advertising campaigns including the British airline easyJet. This is the first time camel racing has taken place at the show and is definitely not to be missed. Also new for 2018 is The Fabulous Food & Farming Education Area which will provide visitors with everything they need to know about the important role farming plays in our everyday lives. Information will also be shared on where our food comes from before it is sold in the supermarkets. Throughout the weekend competitive classes will be taking place for more than 20 different types of cattle, over 30 different types of sheep, goats and pigs, as well as in homecraft, horticulture and sheep shearing. Poultry, rabbits and alpacas will also be on show, with falconry displays, scurry racing and the Grand Parade of award-winning livestock will take place in the main ring. Food lovers will have an extensive range of hand-picked catering concessions to choose from, each specialising in a different type of cuisine, showcasing local food producers from all across Dorset. There will be more than 450 trade stands at the show during the weekend for those looking to support local suppliers. High-end
country items will also be found in the specialist ‘Shopping@theAvenue’ marquee. Will Hyde, show secretary, said: “Each year we work hard to ensure Dorset County Show continues to offer new attractions for our visitors, while still promoting excellence within agriculture. We have produced a jam-packed programme of activities which we are proud of for 2018 and will capture all interests and bring people together to celebrate the best of Dorset’s rural life. “Come rain or shine it is a priority of ours to host a variety of attractions and activities which will create the perfect day out for all the family. If the dying flowers are left until they form seed pods, the plant thinks its job is done for the year and it won’t bother to produce any more flowers.
When the seed capsules turn brown and start to split, cut them off and spread on paper lined trays until they’re fully dry. Take out the seeds and store in small labelled envelopes until ready for sowing.
However, with many of your plants, which have probably cost a packet from the local garden centre, you may want to leave some of the flowers until seed heads are produced so that you can collect the

Great Dorset Steam Fair

Big Ride cyclists brave the heat for Julia’s House A hundred and twenty riders braved sweltering heat to take part in The Big Ride, a new cycling event organised by Julia’s House, the Dorset and Wiltshire Children’s Hospice.

Previously run as the Hospice-toHospice ride, with a route between the Dorset hospice in Corfe Mullen and the Wiltshire hospice in Devizes, this year it changed venue and name in favour of a new circular route starting from Larmer Tree Gardens. Cyclists chose between a 50 and 100 mile ride through beautiful open countryside, villages – and up a couple of killer hills! There were several welcome refreshment stops along the way and at the end of their journey the cyclists were presented with medals and treated to a celebratory hog roast and glass of Prosecco. Last year’s ride raised £63,000 and early signs are that this is likely to be matched. Among those joining the ride was Julia’s House Director of Care Ali Acaster and
Parent Ambassador Charles Andrews along with 10 of his colleagues from engineering firm Meggitt. Charles, whose 14-year-old daughter Katherine receives care from Julia’s House, has had a very active week – he is currently taking part in the charity’s Trek the Alps challenge event. Big thank you to all the Julia’s House volunteers for manning checkpoints, refreshments and road crossings and to sponsors Addo Food Group, Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Muc Off, Emily Crisps and Pedals Cycle Centre.

MINI PIZZAS
With these Mini Pizzas you really have the chance to make them your own. Cover them with tomato and cheese and then pick from any number of topping choices: Pineapple and ham, pepperoni or even chicken and sweetcorn. Alternatively create your own unique toppings.
Ingredients 450g strong white bread flour 2 tbsp. extra-virgin olive oil 7g sachet fast-action yeast 350ml warm water 2 tsp. salt
Equipment: Large bowl Oven: 240C, Gas Mark 9, 220C Method: In a large bowl, mix together the yeast, flour and 2 teaspoons of salt. Once this is all mixed together, create a well in the middle. In a separate jug, mix together the oil and the water and then pour into the bowl. Then, work the liquid into the flour mix to create the dough. Leave the bowl to one side for 15 minutes. Create a well-floured surface and put flour on your hands then begin to knead the dough. Do this for about 2 minutes until it is soft and even. Put the dough back in the bowl and cover it with oiled cling film. Leave it once again to one side (preferably in a warm place). When the dough has risen to double its size, heat the oven and place a baking sheet on a high shelf. Then dust another sheet with flour before splitting the dough into 8. Roll 3 balls thinly into circles and put them on the floured sheet. Use a thin layer of sauce on top with some seasoning and cheese of your choice. Bake for 12 minutes until golden then add fresh toppings of your choice and use the rest of the dough to create more!
