Hello West Moors!

Well we have had a real treat with all the Olympics recently. The Opening Ceremony was a real triumph of our British history. Quite a spectacular performance. Well done to all those fantastic volunteers! In the Games themselves I have loved watching the gymnastics which I have to say is my favourite. I remember seeing these as a teenager and being in complete awe. I have to say, I still feel the same! The swimming, diving and watersports too, they are all great to watch.

At the time of this writing we still have a week to go so fingers crossed we get some Gold medals!!

Great Dorset Seafood The health of oceans worldwide has deteriorated significantly and become a major concern for conservationists, and the leading trends causing this decline are overfishing and unsustainable fishing methods. Luckily, it is not too late to recover the health of our seas and The Great Dorset Seafood Campaign has been launched by Dorset Wildlife Trust to promote a return to a healthy and productive marine environment.

There are many ways in which consumers can help us to achieve our goal. Making informed choices by selecting the right type of seafood in shops and restaurants, as well as encouraging your local retailers to provide sustainable seafood, go a long way in setting the trend towards healthy fishing and seafood consumption. When choosing your seafood meal, go for the local and seasonal choice whenever possible. This is not only the most sustainable option, but also the freshest and tastiest as well; and Dorset alone provides 40 different local species of seafood and fish to choose from! Several outlets in the county already support our campaign by providing high quality, low im pact seafood and you can locate them by the “Great Dorset Seafood available here” badge displayed at their premises.

Marine Week in Dorset runs from 28th July to 12th August 2012 and celebrates our seas with several exciting events

for the whole family, such as rockpool rambles and eco-crabbing at Kimmeridge Bay. On Saturday the 11th, Wareham Quay is host to the Great Dorset Seafood Event and The Fine Foundation’s Chesil Beach Centre will showcase its first exhibition, ‘A Celebration of Dorset’s Living Seas’, until 9th of September. All ears for over 7 years Founded in 2005 Kellear Hearing is part of a family run business that has had offices in Bargates since 1970.

After a career in the Royal Army Medical Corps spanning nearly 30 years Paul Kelly the practice director was used to the effects of loud noises and was looking for a new challenge.

In January 2000 Paul undertook his Registered Hearing Aid Dispenser training and in 2001 gained his license to practice.

Paul gained his Fellowship of the British Society Of Hearing Aid Audiologists in 2006 and is a designated conciliator for their national Customer Care Scheme which deals with disputes and complaints from patients.

In 2009 Paul decided to take on two new challenges that would add to his expertise and knowledge and after 2 years of distance learning he was awarded his Foundation Degree in Audiology from Anglia Ruskin University Cambridge whilst the second in 2011 saw him gaining his Diploma in Clinical Ear Care for Hearing Aid Audiologists (CECHAA) which enables him to deal with and remove wax in ears.

WEST MOORS ART SOCIETY A Have you an interest in painting and drawing?

Why not join the friendly group who meet in the West Moors Memorial Hall on Monday mornings. You will be very welcome.

A demonstration by a professional artist is enjoyed on the second Monday in each month with members, always happy to help each other, meeting for untutored workshops on all other Mondays.

We have a break in August and then meet again on September 10th when Fiona Peart will be with us to demonstrate how to paint flowers using watercolours.

WEST MOORS FLOWER GROUP 40th Anniversary Lunch On Wednesday the 18th July the Ladies of West Moors Flower group and guests dressed as though they were going to a wedding, with lovely outfits and stunning hats. Everyone wore a corsage or button hole which was the competition. The event was to celebrate that the group had reached the milestone of 40 years, its Ruby Anniversary.

The group was started by the late Brenda Dear who Members at the 40th Anniversary Lunch invited her friends to her house to enjoy the art of flower arranging, when she could no longer fit everyone in they moved to the memorial hall where we are today, and still going strong with over 65 members.

We all sat down to a lovely lunch, followed by our guest speaker for the day, Susie Edwards and her title was “5 weddings and a breakdown� telling us how she managed to do 5 weddings over one weekend and all the problems along the way. She was very entertaining and brought along some lovely arrangements to enhance her talk which we raffled.

We ended the afternoon with the beautiful cake which was made by one of our members. It was cut by our president Mrs Chris West who is a founder member. The Chairman Mrs Elsie Harvey thanked everyone for coming and this ended a perfect day enjoyed by everyone.

West Moors Horticultural Society The West Moors Horticultural Society, which is the largest organisation in the village is holding its Summer Show on:

Saturday 25th August 1.30pm — 4pm Sponsored by Stewarts Garden Centre Do come along and see the wonderful displays of dahlias, vegetables, floral art, homecrafts and photography.

West Moors Lunch Club West Moors Lunch Club welcomes over 60’s to a cooked lunch every Wednesday in St Anthony of Padua’s Church Hall, Pinehurst Road. An afternoon of table games, carpet bowls and bingo follows the lunch and tea and cakes complete the day.

Transport can be arranged locally if needed and volunteer car drivers will be most welcome. Our new season resumes on 5th September and for information about the club please phone Joan on 01202 891519.

West Moors Library News As part of the Jubilee celebrations West Moors library held a ‘Jubilee Tea’ and royal quiz afternoon which was very well supported. At the same time a presentation to some West Moors children was made as they had entered a competition to design a crown fit for the Queen. The winner, Ophelia Naidu received a Jubilee Bear, coin and medal and all those who took part also received a Jubilee medal. As winner Ophelia was asked to present a bouquet of flowers to the Lord Lieutenant of Dorset who visited West Moors to dedicate a tree on the Petwyn to Her Majesty. None of this would have been possible without the generosity of Judith Church who very kindly donated all prizes, tree and plaque.

Summer at West Moors library:This year’s Reading Challenge is entitled Story Lab. As before all children are encouraged to participate by reading 6 books throughout the summer holidays. All children taking part will receive a ‘pop-up’ story lab to assemble with a pull off tab to record the books read.

There are 3 challenge stages; bronze, silver and gold with stickers being issued after 2, 4 and 6 books have been read. On completion medals will be handed out in the library and certificates sent to schools.

Storyteller David Heathfield will be at the library to tell the story of the Golden Goose. All children are very welcome to come – the more the merrier!

August 28th 3.30 – 4.30pm Another story and craft activity. This time make your own Olympic torch.

Adults are encouraged to take part in their own challenge. Come into the library to get your passport and learn more about the world!!

Father and son go green Dave New has been running his own window company for the last 18 years, but has recently found himself replacing broken down double glazing units more and more. After one evening of browsing the internet, he found a new method which enables the repair of these foggy windows instead of doing the initial replacing. The bonus of this new method is that it is easier, cheaper and a lot more environmentally friendly.

What to do in your Garden in August Well, so far it’s been a bit of a disappointing Summer, with really sunny days being few and far between. I think it’s safe to say that living in the U.K. one has to learn to grab good garden days when they come along.

Some things you can do in your garden this month include: • Keep an eye open for any Enjoy the beauty of sunflowers in summer areas of bare soil in your garden and mulch them to aid in water retention and the suppression of weeds. Care must be taken though not to cover up seedlings or to allow a build up of mulch against the stems of plants, specially if you are using grass cuttings.

• If you have herbs in your garden then now is a good time to start picking some to dry for the winter months ahead.

• You can start looking at and buying Spring bulbs now and make plans for where you want to put them.

• Go around your garden and harvest any seed heads that are ready. It is best to collect them in brown paper bags or envelopes and label them straight away so you don’t forget what they are.

• Check roses for any leaves that have Blackspot or Rust, pick these off and dispose of them in the bin not the compost heap.

• If Narcissi bulbs are on your bulb shopping list you might want to consider planting at least some as soon as they arrive. If you do this you will have flowers by Christmas to brighten your garden.

• Check for and remove any suckers (a secondary shoot growing from the root or base) from roses, shrubs or trees.

• It goes with out saying that any hanging baskets that are not in a

position to benefit from rainfall need to be checked and watered regularly.

An idea I’ve had is to take photos of your garden – and this would be a project for throughout the year – to plot and plan, not only what flowers and plants work well in different areas but also what could use being moved or replaced. If there is a spot that lacks colour or structure it would be more obvious when the photographs are put together with a plan of your garden.

If you have drafting or drawing skills perhaps a large piece of paper (butcher’s paper is good as it comes in a roll and can be torn to size) can be used to draw a basic plan of your garden and the photos attached.

Do you have a water butt in your garden? It used to be a fairly standard fixture in gardens when I was a child, but I’m not sure they are making the come back that they should.

If you don’t have one yet why not look around for one of the right size and price range for your needs. Chances are good that as soon as you’ve got it rigged up it will stop raining.

In the beginning‌ Coping with CHAOS (Children's Helpers And Other Support) was started in 1997 by two local East Dorset parents, Liz Morris and Anne Boyce, both of whom had children with very different disabilities. Although lots of organisations talked about inclusion and support, they found that in reality very little was available, which left them feeling frustrated and isolated. Based on their personal experiences, they identified the need for an organisation that provided support, not only for the disabled child, but for the siblings as well and ultimately the parents - the whole family. Recognising that the long summer holiday period was a particularly stressful time, they organised the first holiday 'Play Opportunity' sessions that year supporting 12 families. Today over 300 families are registered and Coping with CHAOS is recognised as a major provider of short breaks for families with disabled children in the area. All the permanent staff are parents of children with disabilities or have experience of working with disabilities.

Coping with CHAOS became part of Diverse Abilities Plus on 1st April 2011. Diverse Abilities Plus was established by a group of parents of children with cerebral palsy in the 1950s. It is now a significant charity offering lifetime partnerships to individuals with the whole range of disabilities and their families, empowering them and offering the best level of assistance, support and education across Dorset. The values and services which Coping with CHAOS and Diverse Abilities Plus provide are complementary. The support and infrastructure of a larger organisation will help assure the continuation and development of the services we offer at CHAOS. WRVS - Making Britain a great place to grow old WRVS is an age positive, national charity founded over 70 years ago. We believe that every older person should have the opportunity and choice to get more out of life. At a local community level we deliver personal and practical support through the power of local volunteers to support older people. At a national level we raise awareness of the issues older people face through our media campaigns and research and lobby the government for age-related policy improvements.

Rather than offering a range of local services, the new way of working will start with the individual older person – understanding what their needs are and helping them to remain independent at home and active in their local community.

West Moors Befriending service makes it possible for older people to carry on doing the things they enjoy - whether that's a lift to the football or organising a visit to the pub for lunch.
